Title: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 02, 2018, 05:26:15 PM
You are escorted through wealth.

Halls of ivory, untouched by the heat within. Enough for surely thousands and thousands of elephants, used extravagantly.

A great fountain that spews cold, liquid gold along with tiny rubies, as if it was mere water in the middle of the ocean.

A hall decorated with works of art older than most Prime worlds, by ancient masters so long forgotten that the names are meaningless, as if artistic monoliths left to be marveled over.

A great viewing room where deep below sits the skeletons of a hundred wyrms, hoards with them and sparkling like a sea of coins.

A hunting room decorated with the heads of beasts fantastical and rare, mounted and preserved perfectly.

All of this and more, luxury unthinkable. At last you are taken to a wing - three dozen elegant rooms of the finest furniture and design, luxuriously large. A small army of efreet await, "They will fulfill your every desire, you merely need to ask," Akil says, "Dinner is in three hours. You are at leisure to rest and spend your time in these humble guests rooms as you see fit."

Moore merely waits for the time being in order to follow the discretion of the deities, as likely they will all head together to discuss how they intend to handle this sort of diplomatic endeavor -- and what spells will or won't end up being used for it.

"Come on, let's get settled in," Seira tells Honeydip and Elle, letting Barachiel take the first step towards any would-be gathering.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 02, 2018, 05:37:05 PM
"They are not needed," Barachiel says firmly. Politely enough, but firm enough to rival steel.

To this Akil merely snaps his fingers, the efreet filing out without another word. "It is your right as guests," Akil agrees, then bows. "In that case I will leave you to your recovery. I look forward to this evening. Dress to impress." Stepping back Akil turns to go, but pauses. "Oh yes, Duke Moore, was it? There are guests of the Sultan here that wish to meet you. I believe you crossed them in the field of battle previously."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 02, 2018, 05:40:17 PM
Moore merely nods at that, not giving in to comment.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 02, 2018, 05:43:37 PM
Cresiel minutely tenses, gaze turning sharper on Akil. He smiles - far from a kind smile. The smile of a warrior sizing up a new opponent, the thrill of battle in them. "Pass on my regards to them and my intent that we conclude our previous encounter at the soonest opportunity."

Lady Honeydip stays by Seira and adds, "History with them?" she asks, voice whisper soft.

Akil smiles even more, "Commander Madani will be pleased to hear your words, I'm sure." With that he turns and goes, leaving all of you alone.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"Obviously," Seira responds. "Quite a few skirmishes preceded this meeting."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 02, 2018, 05:48:11 PM
"I'll tell you all about them." Moore says. "I wonder who they got to replace the pit field."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 02, 2018, 05:51:45 PM
"I would know more," Vel Custos declares, reaching up and taking off his mask. His face is weathered and severe, gaze stern. "What existing enmities lie in waiting here?"

Cerulean Joy gently rests a hand on her husband's arm, murmuring something to him.

"We all should. Moore, begin with yours," Barachiel says, "Seira, I would hear more of your history with Akil bin Faheem, if there is more to add, afterwards."

Adalan stands back but speaks up, "I have past encounters with the efreet as well."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 02, 2018, 05:57:58 PM
"Of course. I encountered him and his cohorts while on an excursion to free slaves as well as take weapons from a guarded efreet location some weeks ago. His full name is Nasir Farhad Madani, and he is the Commander of the Order of the Burning Heart. He had with him a pit fiend, a disfigured woman who was a servant of Belial, and a human who seemed to be in service to Asmodeus." He explains.

"The pit fiend used a wand that seemed to be from the very bowels of Nessus itself. We destroyed it in the light of Chronias by placing it at the Bridge of Al-Sihal. I know not the names of the other cohorts that he had with them, but they all carried rings that allowed themselves to avoid the effects of spells like Time Stop, which is how they all ended up getting away in our last encounter." He adds. "Ah, one other thing. Madani wears the Armor of Saint Daldelus -- it protects him from magic and allows him to use it to attack others. I intend to get that back the next time we see him."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 02, 2018, 06:21:39 PM
"Oh that is bullshit!" Seira exclaims at the part of the time stop-defeating rings. "First they ignore antimagic, then they mock those who trained to resist such tactics. That's feats that Mystra herself finds difficult to teach others!"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 02, 2018, 10:19:39 PM
"I don't believe it was antimagic," Cresiel speaks up, "More of a sink that chosen magic flowed down, like a drain. I will enjoy wearing it one day."

"Still," Jetina adds softly, "They are disturbingly well equipped."

Barachiel is silent for all of that for a short time, until he speaks firmly, "I agree, and we will ensure that those disagreeable tools are taken from them and put to better uses."

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 02, 2018, 10:33:45 PM
Moore nods. "There are limits to it, I believe. If any of you face him, he cannot seem to absorb the magic if he himself is unaware it is being cast. As for Jetina's point... yes, it's clear either The Grand Sultan or Asmodeus... or others, but even if it isn't them exactly, they seem to be funded by very strong individuals, likely deities."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 03, 2018, 05:52:40 AM
"So unseen needles all the way, or the old-fashioned physical violence?" Seira muses, deciding to just ignore the unfairness of the rest of it.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 03, 2018, 08:15:08 PM
"Yes, I think all of that would work. To give you an example, he wasn't able to do anything about some delayed blast fireballs that we set up before he came back into view." Moore explains. "Old-fashioned violence works just fine too, I imagine he couldn't stop a spell that was channeled into a weapon, either."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 12:21:34 PM
"Then we will deal with him should chances permit," Barachiel agrees, "Seira, what of your history with Akil bin Faheem?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 12:23:53 PM
"I believe that I am Razalim's rightful owner, and have been making waves about that," Seira responds. "I also happen to think he's the worst, and needs to die. He probably realized that all on his own."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 01:01:02 PM
"Well spoken," Vel Custos says, "Or locked up far away."

Meanwhile Barachiel says, "Then we are spoken. For now, rest and prepare how you will."

A chance to do anything or rest until the dinner. Do either of you wish to do anything in that time?
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 01:08:29 PM
Nothing here. For notes on Charisma, Moore will be using his Marshal Aura to give everyone here a +15 bonus (unless someone feels like flinging some sort of extra divine bonus to charisma his way, of course!) but I'm sure we can lay out all the prep spells when we get there.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 01:11:30 PM
We can skip ahead. Does Honeydip mind motivating intelligence, btw?
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 01:13:19 PM
Not in the slightest, Cor.

If you want to lay out precast spells I'd rather do it now, Moore, unless you mean casting them once there.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 01:16:53 PM
I already stated my precast spells, they are my 'combat loadout' from here (http://www.soulriders.net/forum/index.php/topic,104109.msg1115887.html#msg1115887) sans per round spells and sans Glorious Rally and Celestial Valor.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 01:22:55 PM
Moore's loadout is as follows:

Greater Improvisation: 90 luck points to use on skill checks/saves (5h)
Righteous Halo: +4 Sacred to Charisma (1/day)
Surge of Hope (CL30): +4 morale bonus to attack, saves, skills - 30m
Fortunate Fate (CL19): Heal (150) cast if reduced to 0 or less hit points.
Biblotecha Arcana (CL30): +15 insight to all Knowledge Checks, Scholar's Touch and permanent recollection of information collected with that. (24h)
Superior Resistance (CL30): +6 resistance bonus (24h)
Mind Blank (CL15): Immunity to mind effecting ... effects??

If he could manage it during the talks he'd try and get some bardic music to help out with the skill checks, but if he's not able to actually do that without it being totally obvious then he won't bother.

And if someone has something they can give him to boost Charisma that isn't sacred or enhancement, he'll take it.

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 01:49:39 PM
The dinner hall is big enough for hundreds,  yet it is your party admitted along with the guests here. A massive series of tables all surround a single, elevated high table. Food and drink are laden out for everyone, the smell of it overwhelmingly appealing.

Akil bin Faheem stands nearby and smiles, "My friends," he greets, a gesture towards all of you while his other hand strokes the hilt of Razalim, "Welcome."

At the high table are others. An efreet sits there, tall and well build, wearing a military uniform. He's broad and bulky, the sort that suggests muscle built up over the years through hard work. He sips from a goblet, relaxed.

The next is a fallen, a fallen solar in particular. His six wings are blackened and burnt, sitting upright and in beautiful armor of a pale red. Full armor save for a helmet, showing his pale white hair and burning eyes of magma. His gaze is already on the group as they enter.

Another efreet is here, a familiar one - Commander Nasir Farhad Madani, dressed in finery of red and white, laughing as he says something to a server passing by.

"This way," Akil says, "Others will be seated after all of you."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 01:53:18 PM
"Thank you," Seira tells him politely, making her way to the seat arranged for her.

Who are they? K:P 10 for 97 with the +14 from Honeydip.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 01:54:00 PM
Take 10 on K:P for 94 to identify the folks! Assuming He can benefit from Honeydip, that is 108.

Moore will follow the decorum set by Seira and Barachiel! He does, at least, look at the others in attendance, and give a particularly icy smile across the table to Nasir.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 02:08:09 PM
The tall and well built efreet is Zahir Hamawi, the powerful leader of the Hamawi family. A noble family that has served the Grand Sultan for ages, they are rich and powerful. This one made his bones in the Blood War and then in trading, and finally did well in court intrigues. He's old, respected and canny. Also a fell hand with any weapon and especially wit magic. Not to be crossed lightly, unless you want to leave this life.

The solar is Dustfire, a fallen who serves Eblis. A sadist, he enjoys burning mortals and reducing them to ash. A natural fire mage of great power and skill. While not one of the Sundered Suns, he is nonetheless a servant of Eblis.

Nasir returns that smile with a raise of a goblet towards Moore, as if greeting him.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 02:10:08 PM
Moore gives Nasir a polite, if not particularly enthusiastic nod as he waits for the others to be seated.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 02:11:00 PM
The servant of Eblis looks out of place on reputation alone, so perhaps he is exceptionally powerful. Then again, he could have talents that lie in a different direction. Seira looks between Zahir and Akil, trying to estimate who is actually running this show on the Sultan's side.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

You get a feeling Akil's ranking here. Based on his rank as emir, that also makes sense.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 02:21:16 PM
Seira nods slightly to herself, settling to wait for Akil to start things off.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 02:24:23 PM
Moore waits as well!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 02:28:22 PM
Seira is seated opposite Akil, while Moore is seated opposite Nasir.

Barachiel is seated opposite the grand chair of course, while the other sfan out on your sides. Elle is next to Seira and Honeydip on her other, while Jetina and Xandra flank Moore.

"Duke Moore," Nasir greets you, "I'm surprised to see you in good health."

Akil adds to Seira in the meantime, "The Sultan and his entourage will be along shortly. In the meantime, I believe we have a conversation about Razalim, Seira?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 02:32:14 PM
Moore just settles in for a smile across the table at Nasir. "Commander Nasir. Alas, not even an assassination attempt can keep me from such a meeting as this."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 02:34:38 PM
"It is a blade with a heavy duty, to keep on traveling until it is allowed to rest in the hands of its destined owner," Seira starts off said conversation.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 02:38:13 PM
"So it can't," Xandra says, "Destiny will not be overthrown so easily." She sits primly, not touching the food or drink.

"Too bad, we both gave it our best," he remarks, taking a soft orange slice in hand, "Few prey have ever escaped me, Moore. Those few who have are benefits of temporary reprieves, not full pardons." He pauses to take a bite on it, sharp teeth severing the orange in one swift bite.

Meanwhile, Akil says, "Fortunately for Razalim, its long journey is over." Patting the hilt of the blade, "Though I find your own claims amusing, as you're a day late and short."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 02:41:47 PM
"Is that so?" Moore asks. "I think, at the very least, we can both respect the talents and abilities that each of our groups bring, if not the methods or goals that we hope to attain. In that, and perhaps only that, I think we can see eye-to-eye." A sincere smile follows. "I was surprised not to see you at the War College, I admit."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 02:42:55 PM
"In the realms of immortals, us youngsters need to force our way to the top, since a spot won't just become available if we wait long enough. Fortunately, whether we get a seat at the table or not depends on our skill," Seira says, glancing over at Elle with another polite smile. "I'm glad to have amused you, even though that was not my intention. After all, haven't Razalim's previous owners been equally certain? That my casual words would have such an impact that you would bring this matter first thing, Akil, suggests that you are not as secure in your ownership as you profess."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 02:52:17 PM
"Ah, nonsense," Akil chuckles now, pausing to pick up a goblet and sip from it. "I have seen Fire and the efreet rise, no mere magical sword will be the better of me."

At this Elle smiles back at you, "Sword? Who said anything about a sword? I think a dragon is much more dangerous to worry about."

Meanwhile Nasir leans forward slightly, "I was surprised to hear you took the entire library as spoils."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 02:56:52 PM
"A steady growth from the beginning of Fire, and twenty fire years, give or take, to match it," Seira says sweetly. "I wonder where we'll be in another year, going by this pace."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"Did you expect I'd steal the giant spider they have in the basement?" Moore asks.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 03:04:00 PM
Conversation is cut off by the blowing of a horn. A deep noise, stopping the conversation where it is. "Ah," Akil rises, "The Grand Sultan is preparing to enter."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 03:06:06 PM
Seira rises herself, intending to be courteous as a visiting dignitary to her host.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Moore will follow along with Barachiel's steps with regards to this!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 03:20:11 PM
Barachiel stays sitting, though he doesn't stop Seira from rising.

Before all of you, the seat opposite Barachiel is slowly filled with flame.s A column of flame descends from above, the heat like a physical force slamming into each of you. It burns and burns, the figure there tall, powerful. A superior specimen, clad in lush red silks and turban, sitting here with a self satisfied smile. "My guests, welcome," The Grand Sultan greets all of you, "Welcome!"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Moore gives a polite nod.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 03:33:28 PM
"On behalf of Celestia, we accept your invitation to discuss current events," Barachiel agrees, meeting the Sultan's gaze.

The Grand Sultan has a black beard, a hand going up to stroke it as he smiles, a sharp and devilish thing. "On behalf of the Empire of the Efreet, I accept," he says indulgently, a few moments of stairdown with Barachiel. "A toast. To this meeting," he picks up a goblet and raises it high, breaking the staring contest.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Seira has every reason of playing along for now!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 03:36:42 PM
Moore at least has no qualms of following along with this, so takes his glass and raises it along with Seira.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 03:42:50 PM
"Now," With a growing smile as he sips his drink before putting it down, "We've never had a chance to meet like this before, any of you."

"Not quite," Adalan speaks up, placing his goblet down. "We met a long time ago, Sultan. Before you rose to the throne. Do you remember Al-Bakrit?"

A pause at that, "You've grown up," The Sultan says at last, "That WAS a long time ago."

The healer merely inclines his head towards the Sultan. "You chase what the Crimson Firebrand built."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 03:45:29 PM
Moore glances over -- he'll have to do some research on that later. Now isn't the time to be distracted!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 03:47:03 PM
"We've met two decades ago, give or take a year," Seira comments, sipping at her own glass. "Although at the time, it was at your court, Grand Sultan."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 03:53:49 PM
"And you survived Al-Bakrit," The Sultan concludes. "For that, live." Then he turns his attentions to Seira, "So we did. You've grown up as well, dragonling." He chuckles, eyes dark.

Meanwhile Vel Custos is staring down Akil, the two of them doing that to the side.

"You'll find we all have, Sultan," Lady Honeydip speaks up.

Barachiel seems content to sit back for the moment, though at that he says, "Our new generation is hopeful, Sultan. What of yours?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 03:56:58 PM
For his part, Moore tries to avoid any impolite staring but does look to the other side of the table for their answers!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 03:57:13 PM
"It's true," Seira agrees, making herself comfortable. "I'm not the same person I was back then. My goals have expanded, too, Most Puissant of Hunters."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 04:17:02 PM
"So they have, Dragon Princess," The Grand Sultan sits back with a bigger smile, "Our new generation is here, some old and some new, with others to be seen later. So," He gestures, as servants come. The first course is laid out - a thick soup, spiced beef of some kind, smelling strong and surely like fire in your mouths.

"Why do you wage this war you cannot win in, not when Shar runs rampant?" The Grand Sultan asks. "Your timing is abysmal and foolhardy."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 04:20:05 PM
Moore lets Seira and Barachiel handle that!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 04:27:48 PM
"I have waged no war, Your Smoldering Dictatorship," Seira responds easily. "It is certainly true that I had a disagreement with a few devils who happened to be on Fire, yet I took great measures to keep this limited conflict contained to just those involved." Her gaze crosses the gathered dignitaries, lingering just a bit longer over Eblis's representative as she adds, "It is a shame that certain parties tried to challenge me during my business and foolishly insisted on a needless escalation."

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 04:45:50 PM
"All of the efreet are under my protection," The Grand Sultan declares.

"As are all of the archons under mine," Barachiel declares right back, a hand gently against the table, a resonating thump that sounds like a bell ringing.

With another stroke of his beard as servants scurry away, the soup course before you, "We understand limited conflicts in times where there are overriding threats. Right now none of our realms need this. We need to focus on the Sharrans. That damnable prophecy looms over us all."

At this Nasir speaks up, "Better us live to fight another day than to all perish and never fight again."

Zahir grunts, "Smarter to face one foe at a time, rather than facing all comters at once."

"So, you want us to put this aside in favor of opposing Shar?" Cerulean Joy's voice is soft, "You believe her to be as serious a threat as Primus proclaims?"

"Worse than you, worse than the hungering slaad, worse than the demons and Demogorgon." The Grand Sultan declares.

Cerulean Joy's gaze turns icy, yet she listens nonetheless.

"I will propose we establish a treaty, to forestall any...needless escalations and disagreements, to prevent limited conflicts." The Grand Sultan says, "We can return to our eternal quarrels once the crisis is past."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 05, 2018, 04:50:01 PM
"Shar is the worst," Seira is quite ready to agree.

"Am I to understand that you already have a draft for this treaty, Grand Sultan?" she asks, trying to soup as she waits for his answer.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Moore is happy enough to hear that answer first!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 05, 2018, 05:13:21 PM
The soup is remarkably spicy but well seasoned in spite of it, flavors coming through well. It's a rich, beefy taste.

"I have one prepared," The Grand Sultan says, holding up a hand. "You need not reply now, official negotiations begin tomorrow. Consider it, talk amid yourselves."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 05, 2018, 05:14:51 PM
Moore has to wonder if any of them are going to breach the subject of slavery or not, but for now does enjoy the stew at the very least.

Post by: Corwin on November 06, 2018, 02:36:13 AM
How nice that he is giving them his starting negotiating position! This way Seira doesn't need to go out on a limb by making a counter-proposal blindly.

"Certainly," she agrees. "We can take a look after this delightful meal, in preparation for tomorrow."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 06, 2018, 01:20:28 PM
As you all sit there and eat, conversation starts. Amid it, Zahir speaks up. "I've had the most success with force magic against Sharran shadows and spectres." His voice is a grunt.

"Holy magic works best, of course," Barachiel agrees, "Force will suffice, but it is not the power that will truly defeat Shar and her minions."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 06, 2018, 01:23:30 PM
"I must respectfully disagree with the two of you," Seira interjects. "Magic is not the answer with Shar, not long-term. I believe Alicia has shown that recently, with her defense of Sylica. Shar's forces must be driven away, yes, with holy power, positive energy, light-based magic, force and ethereal spell being the most suitable for her favored minions. But at the core, Shar is an idea, and it is that aspect of her that must truly be countered."

"Hope is definitely something that Shar can't handle." Moore adds in. "Hope and possibility for a better and brighter tomorrow, those sorts of things she's tried to strip away from any of her followers who just fall into a well of despair."

Cerulean Joy smiles widely at that, "Exactly so," she says, "Shar is an idea, one we have to discredit and stop entirely." She slowly claps her hands together, as if applauding.

Zahir grunts again, "I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about crushing her annoying minions, not what the diplomats do."

At this Akil laughs a little bit, "Ah, you called," he asks as the Grand Sultan looks on, "The idea that fire will burn away oblivion and burn forever is a powerful one. One you would have no quarrel with, Seira. The Crimson Firebrand built the City of Brass around that idea. Fire will burn forever and the City of Brass will be there forever."

It would be in poor taste to point out that the Crimson Firebrand is no longer the Grand Sultan, so Seira abstains from it.

"I happen to share your belief," Seira tells Akil. "That is the reason behind my research into the fires of creation. It would be interesting to join forces and drive Shar off while restoring life and vigor into all those she touched." Seira sighs, a bit on the theatrical side. "Unfortunately, not all competing ideas are compatible. While the Hells might well succeed with their own, the cost to Creation is simply too terrible to allow them free reign. Enslaving and sacking entire worlds, one after the other? The heavenly realms will never stand for that!"

"That is entirely the point," The Grand Sultan speaks up here, smiling. A sharp thing, a devilish and imposing thing. He looks on over his goblet and adds, "All of our disagreements become meaningless if Shar wins. We can continue arguing them once the board is safe from being destroyed. After all, the Queen can take no pieces when the board is gone."

"On that any but madmen will agree," Elle comments now, pausing from trying the soup. Putting down her spoon and fixing Akil a look, "Your fires and our fires do not burn equally."

"No," Nasir speaks up now, a slight smirk on his lips, "They do not." His gaze turns to Moore at that, long and piercing.

At this Barachiel speaks up, drowning out any response, "Regardless, the underlying point is not wrong. We all have common cause against Shar, no matter how distasteful we may find each other and cooperating."

The rest of the meal passes - opulent to say the least, but ultimately nothing. Over dessert - a dish of sugared and fiery cinnamon rolls, heat felt throughout your body and yet not overwhelming - the Grand Sultan rises. "Lord Barachiel," The Grand Sultan declares, "I would show you the view from the highest tower."

Barachiel rises at that, "Very well." He rises as you hear, 'Seira, as a deity, you are in command while I am gone.'

In that instant the two are gone, as if they were never there. A moment later Akil rises, "A nightcap would serve us all well over a game of Sizaz." His gaze turns on all of you, "Would any of you like to join me?"

"A truly tempting invitation, Akil," Seira tells him, voice tinged with sorrow, "yet I must regretfully decline. Going over the Grand Sultan's draft proposal will likely require all of my mental faculties, not to mention all evening to comprehend properly."

BTW, it was suggested that we will receive said draft, but if it's not being given to us please let me know so I could raise it IC.

"Very well," Akil says, "In that case, let us all retire for the evening. Copies will be available in your rooms." He doesn't press it beyond that, accepting with a calm expression.

From there everyone is escorted back to your palatial quarters, Barachiel still presumably with the Grand Sultan. Jetina takes a long breath out and says, "Are these sort of meetings always so stressful?"

"By Tyr's maimed eyes, yes," Vel Custos says, staying standing with his armored arms crossed. "We are polite out of diplomacy and hospitality, but it does not mean our issues are quelled. Justice still hangs heavy over them."

Elle rests in a chair while Lady Honeydip perches on her shoulder. "A pain I know well. On occasion we would treat with vile things in Androlynne, if only because the alternative was complete destruction and the enslavement of our souls. Things that make a mockery of civilized discussion and wear it like a savage wears bearskins." Lady Honeydip replies, resting her head against the side of Elle's ear. "Is Shar worth this unholy alliance?"

"That is not for me to say," Cresiel speaks up here, staying by Jetina, resting one large hand on her shoulder. "But the deepest logic of it is sound. We of Hope's Landing have seen firsthand what Shar brings. No. It is only a question of how we will oppose her and how we will stop her."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"Shar is not worth the continuation of the status quo," Seira states. "The idea of this devil-aligned court of efreet is not much of an improvement on Nessian ideals, and we weren't ready to hand them Benfal or Lifasa. Whether we could arrive at an agreement, however, depends on how well we work to convince the other side there is no better alternative for them."

"I'm not sure that I'd trust any of them to keep their word ultimately anyway." Moore says. "I suppose for the time being we should see what the Sultan is actually proposing. I imagine it's going to be something like a non-interference pact where we stay off of Fire and "let them handle" Sharran agents."

"The devil is in the details," Xandra speaks up here, "Is that not always the truth of it?"

"Absolutely." Moore agrees.

Presuming it actually is Profession (Judge), Moore will take 10 for 70, including all of the other bonuses from the team and himself. For everyone else, he'll make some magic to give everyone everyone a +8 morale bonus to skill checks and a +5 untyped bonus to the same thing, so everyone basically gets +13 to whatever they're trying to do here.

Divine Insight for +15 insight to any one skill check
Improvisation for +16 luck to any one skill check
Guidance of the Avatar for +20 competence to any one skill check
Marshal auras like Lady Honeydip's are a circumstances bonus.

<Penuche> Kotono invokes Penuche's magic: < 96 > [d20=19]

147 after Seira boosting.

It is a rather long document, written densely and with some jargon, though Moore and Seira's are pretty sure it's not meant to be truly obfuscating as much as simply involving a lot of precise terminology.

In short, the proposal offers the following.

1. Celestia, The Cauldron and the Efreet Empire will cease direct conflicts until the time Shar is deemed adequately checked, defeated or slain. There will be a grace period of 3 years thereafter for all sides to recover and adjust before this agreement dissolves. This includes influencing allies against each other. Minor conflicts amid mortal followers and worshipers are deemed inevitable and understandable, but no side will escalate a situation that occurs naturally nor will they openly charge their follows to continue it.
2. Celestia and the Cauldron will ignore the slave trade. In return, no escalations or further reprisals will be instigated by the Efreet Empire or any allies of the Efreet Empire over slavery.
3. All sides of this agreement will make a good faith effort to uphold all aspects of this agreement. Previous matters of contentions are agreed by all parties to be tabled until this agreement is dissolved.
4. The Efreet Empire, the Cauldron and Celestia shall share intelligence related to Shar and Sharran activities. A good faith effort by all parties will be made to share information. Information that directly exposes or compromises other interests may be held back, so long as a good faith effort is made to not abuse this. To establish this cooperation, a bureau will be created to facilitate this transform of information, with the details to be resolved at a later date.
5. A joint commission will be established to mediate any conflicts that arise from this bureau or related matters of this agreement. It will be manned by three parties - one to represent the interests of the Cauldron and Celestia, one to represent the interests of the Efreet and one neutral party chosen in agreement by all sides of this agreement. In cases of dispute or disagreement, the rulings of this commission will be final. All sides agree that no effort to suborn or magically enchant the members of this commission will be attempted.

"Interesting," Seira notes, honestly surprised at the lack of any visible issues. Of course, it's possible this is due to the efreet placing a colossal one right there in the text. "Vel Custos, what do you think of the main article of this would-be treaty? Specifically, I am referring to the 'openly charge' part. Does it all but spell out that conflict will continue, but that perpetrators caught will be disavowed?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 07, 2018, 01:56:46 PM
"That," Vel Custos frowns, "Is the greatest weaseling in it. It's vague when it doesn't need to be, implying a lot and too blanketing. That should be a target in any negotiation." Jabbing a finger at his copy, "I don't like that part in particular."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 07, 2018, 01:58:38 PM
"I'm not terribly fond of the portion about slavery, either." Moore says. "I realize that in any negotiation you start from an assumed position of power to haggle down from, but..." He huffs once. "While I can certainly agree Shar is awful, I think the very fact that slavery exists plays directly into her powers of... awfulness."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 07, 2018, 01:59:24 PM
"Let's focus on it, but Moore is right. They don't really want to follow this agreement rigidly, and if we're fair we'll admit that neither will we. I certainly am not going to announce to my paladins to stay away from efreet slavers!" She scoffs. "I had quite the history with them while I was mortal, and I wouldn't presume this generation is any different."

She taps the part in the contract that is actually offensive, next. "Now, I had an idea for this, but it involves Celestia going out on a limb. Should we wait for Barachiel's return to discuss a counter-proposal?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Vel Custos considers, "No, tell me now," he says, "I do not speak for him, but I can speak of his likely reaction."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"It's a simple, two-pronged approach. We make it a crime for the efreet to enslave, purchase and otherwise acquire new slaves after the date of signing. And then we'll have Celestia purchase all of the existing ones from their owners."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Moore blinks, then grins. "I'm sure they'd balk at it, but that's quite clever."

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 07, 2018, 02:14:58 PM
"As a matter of principal, we liberate slaves by diplomacy or force of arms, rather than paying for them," Vel Custos says, "Unless it is the only option." He exhales slowly, the three of you with some space from the others as you work. "It won't be accepted by the efreet regardless."

Taking a moment to consider, "My assumptions rest on the thought that the main goal they have is to stop our assault on their slaves before it leads to a general war. The Grand Sultan does not seem to want one - others have been more bloodthirsty and war hungry. This one does not seem to share that trait." Vel Custos concludes.

Then he gives Moore a long look, "If you could convince them of that without giving up something untenable, you would have a tongue not of silver or gold, but of pure platinum."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 07, 2018, 02:20:10 PM
"Do you think he ultimately doesn't want a war because he knows he can't win it?" Moore asks. "This all seems like more blustering than anything, if I'm being honest... unless I'm severely underestimating the forces they have."

He rubs his chin afterwards. "I'm almost of the opinion that we try Lady Seira's plan anyway, to force them to go on record with it."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 07, 2018, 02:21:17 PM
"Why is that? For each clause specifically? All my gathered intelligence suggests that for the vast majority of efreet, it is a way to enhance their profits via unethical plunder rather than some ideological cause as you would expect of the Hells. Does Celestia have other information?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 07, 2018, 02:29:09 PM
"Cultural inertia and money," Vel Custos says, shortly. Slowly rubbing his bearded chin, "For souls lost in the darkness, the false gleam of money draws them in. They grew up in a world of slaves and slavery. They see it is natural. They are an ordered race, one that understands structure, culture, law and authority. It is not a crusade for them, but it is money and it is the way of the world."

Here the celestial pauses, "My wife would disagree," he finally says. "And I am no expert in the efreet in particular, my talents lie with dealing with Banites and the devils."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 07, 2018, 02:42:39 PM
"My suggestion comes from several places," Seira says carefully. "First, we will offer the Grand Sultan and his top advisers far more money than they have via their slaves. Yes, tradition and beliefs will come into that, but so will simple greed and opportunism. It will divide them, no matter whom the Sultan caters to, unless he is willing to take the reigns and offer us amendments of his own. That might land us a worse deal, but one that is a step in the right direction."

She pauses for a breath, continuing afterwards. "Second, the first stages of war had not been in his favor, and there is no reason to consider an open conflict would be different. Yes, we will be hurt, but they more so. Both of our sides ran the risk assessments a year ago, when Aurora's conflict with the efreet slavers threatened to spill over. The efreet have solid allies in the face of the devils, but those in charge realize the dangers of becoming Nessus's client state. We, on the other hand, have yet to tap into all our allies, be they in the heavens or the inner planes. I cannot oppose oblivion represented by Shar and tyranny represented by the Hells while glancing at the oppression and slavery of the efreet and giving it a nod of approval. I suspect neither can Celestia, and others may yet join us."

Seira shakes her head, then. "Come to think of it, we may yet draw from the mortal realms as well. There is no shortage of champions who would crusade against efreet, and most of their forces do not require someone like me to take to the battlefield. On the other hand, while the Prime Materials hold more than their share of tyrants and slavers, few of these mortal despots would threaten their fiefdoms to support the efreet on Fire. And mercenaries can be hired for both sides, after all. Then, there is the certainty that Fire will become the new Avernus, and the City of Brass would not wish to become the new Citadel of Bronze, especially not given its history. Finally, if their intelligence is decent, they know that I've started efforts to isolate them financially. The trade in slaves is about to become very difficult indeed on Fire, and both slaver traders and slave owners stand to lose in both money and comfort via the trade of luxuries. That may well serve as further impetus to take a deal and get in front of this."

Looking at Vel Custos, she asks, "Wouldn't you say this combination of factors gives us a better hand in negotiations? Said better hand should be reflected in concessions to our key values, even as we strive to make the deal palatable to their side."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 07, 2018, 02:52:22 PM
"It would, if they do not have any other tricks to surprise us with," Vel Custos considers, "And if all of what you say is correct."

As he ponders he looks to Moore, "Duke Moore, do you share this opinion?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 07, 2018, 02:59:15 PM
"I agree with Lady Seira's opinion about the reason they keep slaves as well as their actual position when it comes to this war." Moore says. "I'm not trying to suggest I want to go to war with the efreet -- But I definitely am of the opinion we should try and put much more... aggressive terms into this agreement." He adds.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"Nothing untowards," Seira assures Barachiel, before nodding at Moore. "As the Duke has stated, the draft is beyond the current status quo and offensive, but at least it is straightforward. I believe we should push for amendments that meet our goal while offering both incentives the Grand Sultan and the efreet would see as valuable while subtly making a show of force."

She then goes into her arguments to Vel Custos, in order to hear Barachiel's opinion.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 07, 2018, 03:37:45 PM
"I must add my own observations as well," Barachiel says, everyone silent as he raises his hand one moment.

The Lord of Lunia looks about, expression solemn before he smiles slightly. "I believe we have the advantage for a miracle is being worked. The will of Chronias is evident even here and with it we shall accomplish great things."

"My Lord?" Cerulean Joy murmurs softly, a question asked without being asked.

"First, the Grand Sultan is sincere. He wants this agreement, needs it. That is my opinion after several hours of talking to him. This is no empty ploy or negotiating gambit, he will give a great deal to avoid a war." Barachiel's gaze slowly travels to all of you, "Yet in my efforts to understand why, I was rebuffed each time I approached his reasonings beyond Shar. I do believe he is concerned of her efforts, but it is not his primary reason - even after mentioning that Sharrans attempted to assassinate him for reasons unclear."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 07, 2018, 03:44:54 PM
"I could point at a few possibilities, but they all fall within the realm of rumor," Seira offers. "The first is that our analysis is spot on, and he understands the implications quite well. The devils sent forces from Avernus to hold Lifasa... and failed in that, while Avernus is rules by a new Lord of the First. He wouldn't want that for Fire. Another possibility is that the Crimson Firebrand is not only alive, but has shown recent signs of returning, and the Grand Sultan cannot afford a weakened position. That same logic applies if we consider that he is afraid of unrest from his court. There is constant intrigue, and he was incensed about a plot against Akil. A plot, I might add, that only failed because the Grand Sultan himself had to supply his alibi. Finally, he might know something we don't, perhaps about Eblis's future plans. There's something going on there, and given how active Eblis has been in this conflict, it's possible the Sultan is involved in that."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 07, 2018, 03:49:01 PM
A nod to Seira's words. "I can't claim I know much about Eblis or his involvement, but it is interesting that he has a representative here. It's also interesting that Nasir was working so closely with agents from various sections of Hell when they were fighting against me. I wonder if the Sultan is seeing signs of them trying to overplay their long games." Moore says.

"Speaking of... I wonder if he's seen the signs that things are moving in ways like they have never before." Moore says, quietly. "Things like Benfal and Lifasa must also be having their impact when it comes to how to proceed with the future."

A pause. "Still, if slavery is something we have to push on... Even if he were to agree to it, I wonder if all of those under him would be so easy to understand his motivations." He shakes his head. "I suppose if it drives a wedge into Fire we can ultimately take advantage of that, if there are those who are sincere in wanting to stop Shar and perhaps seeing a better future. ...ah, excuse me unbridled optimism."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 07, 2018, 03:51:59 PM
"What matters here is official sanction," Seira responds. "Those who would break the Grand Sultan's word will be outlaws, and we could act against them. Thus, our goal of freeing the enslaved would be met. And now that I think about it, should any efreet in positions of power refuse to follow, it exposes their treachery to him. Better in such a setting, and having someone available to dispose of the treasonous, than discover when their knives are in his back during a pitched battle."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 07, 2018, 03:55:14 PM
"I believe it to be Eblis as well," Barachiel agrees, "For the moment I considered that possibility, a clarity of vision came to me and I knew it was true."

"Divine revelation from Chronias?" Vel Custos says, rather intently, "Is that what you mean, my Lord?"

"Yes. There are many things in play, but I believe that the true root of this is not the Grand Sultan. It is Eblis." Barachiel concludes, "We are in a time of great changes and great miracles."

"Dustfire is here, Lord Barachiel," Lady Honeydip speaks up, "But he did not take of conversation and was distant as well as quiet."

"...a split between Eblis and the Grand Sultan would weaken the efreet," It is Xandra who speaks, "Both in support and in reputation if word of that spread."

As your words are said a lull comes as all consider.

General headshakes, along with, "What do you mean?" Cresiel asks, "Falling is hardly unique to him."

"No kidding. I fell getting out of bed this morning," Jetina remarks wryly.

"Go on," Barachiel says, "Sealtiel rarely speaks of his brother with me."

"Wait, brother?" Elle turns rather sharply at that, "They're related?"

"Making terrible choices in life or turning down the wrong path doesn't mean you're an orphan," Seira points out to Elle. "To put us back on track, it's nothing short of Apotheosis. Eblis has a reliable method of ascension, one that trades the threat of being rejected by Lord Ao for other, equally terrible dangers. Recently, he had extended the option to Gathgorian, one of the devils who opposed Aurora's efforts." She nods at Moore there. "According to my information, he seems to intend to elevate one more."

And Asmodeus apparently knows and approves, but that's too much speculation to put it out here.

Moore raises a hand to his mouth. "So that's how he did it... We had heard that he had ascended somehow, but..." He takes in a breath. "I wonder if that's what that ridiculous 'duel of destiny' was all about..." He murmurs.

"Still, I can see where you're going with this." Moore says with a nod. "Or I can see how it could affect all of this."

Uproar.

"Impossible!" Vel Custos thunders, "No one has that! Why are we not awash in it, then?"

Cerulean Joy's gaze turns intently on Seira, a physical pressure against her. Overwhelming, overpowering. "How do you know this?" she asks, speaking softly, yet not crushed by her husband's declaration.

Cresiel's expression closes off in an instant, stormy and withdrawn. "Antenora Reynes," he says, "I had heard, and...you stole it. You stole the method from Eblis. What is that is so dangerous?"

Barachiel merely holds a hand up amid a dozen other exclamations. Silence falls, "Peace," he declares in a voice that will brook no opposition.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 07, 2018, 04:19:16 PM
"There are great dangers to the method," Seira repeats, nodding at Cresiel. "Indeed. Antenora's ascension followed it successfully, but if you know her you would realize how exceptional you need to be to even apply. You're wrong about one thing, however. It wasn't stolen from Eblis. He gave it to Alicia directly, with the confidence Antenora could not succeed without his aid. In the end, it was he who had his worldview shaken by her."

She purses her lips. "I have every reason to expect that Zaphkiel is fully aware of this matter, so if the details weren't shared with you until now, please trust in his judgement and keep this in confidence for the time being."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"And in my judgement. Do not talk of this, keep it in your confidences," Barachiel agrees, lowering his hand. "We walk in the path of Chronias. Continue if you have more to add, Seira."

Silence follows that, attention on Seira firmly.

Moore takes in a breath. "I think, in that regard then, it makes sense that Eblis' eyes would be here. He's probably begrudgingly curious what other conventions can be shaken up in this new world."

A pause as he looks to Barachiel and then nods to Seira!
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"There are changes taking place across Creation. We've all felt it, or were even a small part of them. The relationship between Eblis and Asmodeus has never been truly clear, and yet, he does harbor regrets. There is a chance to return him to the fold. That he elevated one of the worst devils, yet felt he could work together with Antenora... something new is taking place, here, and I wonder whether the location of Fire is not significant. I wonder just how closely the Grand Sultan factors in Eblis's plans. There are always threes, so is he trying to present a sort of alternative to Nessus and Chronias, as he is now?"

Seira stops herself before she starts to ramble in earnest. "I think we need to push for our ideals. We need to be an active part in the transformation of Creation towards one we can live with, without compromising too much what we believe in. I think we can and should reach out towards those we might rescue, be they Shar's most trusted circle or one of the greatest traitors Celestia had ever known. That's how we'll win, not just against Shar but in the ways that truly matter. And the first step towards that is ending slavery on Fire."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Nephrite on November 07, 2018, 04:36:49 PM
Moore nods. "Yes, I agree. I'd like to make a proposal, then, that I think falls in lean with the hope of idealism." He says, before he clears his throat.

"I'd like to offer to them, as part of whatever agreement we come up with, that the Sultan can send one of his trusted members to Celestia to join my forces. Call it an olive branch, a foolhardy attempt to make someone better, but... If he's serious about this -- if he's serious about wanting to face against Shar and serious about..."

He gestures broadly towards Barachiel. "What he could perhaps not put into words in your presence, My Lord, perhaps this would be a way to have a positive influence on someone which could ripple further than just words. They'd be able to witness the actions my team takes which... as you know, has been a bit unorthodox." A lopsided smile follows after that.

Aloud, softly as if thinking to herself, "And if the Crimson Firebrand is alive and returning..." Elle murmurs, gaze downward and lost.

"Momentous times," Barachiel says, turning to Moore as he speaks. "There is more to speak of, yet all of us need time to consider what has been said. Let us rest and meet again in the morrow, before negotiations begin anew. Everyone, consider ideas such as this, consider this well, and be prepared for tomorrow.""

The night passes without incident. In the morning all gather again, Barachiel beginning. His presence is like a soothing balm, like the scent of the ocean as you lie back in bed, resting after a long day's work.

"Peace," Barachiel begins, standing before you amid the opulence the efreet demand. "I have spoken of the Sultan's need for this and of the revelation about Eblis. There is one more thing that must be said and spoken of more: According to the Grand Sultan, Shar tried to assassinate him."

"It does," Adalan speaks up here, "I have seen more strikes from Shar. More troubling, cults that seem to form against reason and with efficacy."

"She has her twelve shadows, who are apparently these top lieutenants who are all archmages," Seira volunteers. "Unless we can figure out of one is actually on plane," Jetina speaks up, "...can we?"

"It's customary to prepare a counter-proposal," Seira tells Moore. "Of course, it will list far more than our acceptable goals, and serve as the opening for talk same as theirs has done for their positions. Then, we'll engage in talks to find a compromise that achieves our primary goals, while ensuring that the Grand Sultan doesn't lose face and can present tangible successes to his people."

"It is customary," Barachiel says, "My friends, I would hear your council. What counter terms should we propose?"

It's here that Vel Custos speaks up, "I like sharing knowledge about Sharran activities."

"It's practical," Cerulean Joy agrees, still at his side. "On that it seems we can all agree."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 08, 2018, 01:29:47 PM
"I propose we respond to their straightforward proposal with one of our own," Seira voices. She runs the language down in her head for a few moments, before breathing fire into the air where it forms into orange letters for all to see.

1. Celestia, The Cauldron and the Efreet Empire will cease direct conflicts until the time Shar is deemed adequately checked, defeated or slain. There will be a grace period of 3 years thereafter for all sides to recover and adjust before this agreement dissolves. This includes influencing allies against to cease any such direct conflicts between them and one of the signatories. Minor conflicts amid mortal followers and worshipers are deemed inevitable and understandable, but every effort must be made by those further up the literal or spiritual chain of command to deescalate the situation.
2. The slave trade will be stopped at once, and any subject of the Grand Sultan found in violation of this clause will be put to final death, his belongings seized for the Grand Sultan's treasury. Any resident of Fire engaging in the slave trade and existing outside the purview of the Grand Sultan will not enjoy the throne's protection and may be attacked by the signatories of the treaty with impunity.
3. All slaves held by the subjects of the Grand Sultan must be freed at once, and delivered to a planar location of their choice. The location in question may not be one of the lower planes or a hostile environment unable to sustain life. Failure to adhere to this on the part of the slave owner will mark them as in violation of the treaty, subject to the seizure of all their assets by the Grand Sultan.
4. All sides of this agreement will make a good faith effort to uphold all aspects of this agreement. Previous matters of contentions are agreed by all parties to be tabled until this agreement is dissolved.
6. A joint commission will be established to mediate any conflicts that arise from this bureau or related matters of this agreement. It will be manned by four parties - one to represent the interests of the Cauldron, one for Celestia, one to represent the interests of the Efreet and one neutral party chosen in agreement by all sides of this agreement. In cases of dispute or disagreement, the rulings of this commission will be final. All sides agree that no effort to suborn or magically enchant the members of this commission will be attempted.

"This should be good for a counter-proposal that they will reject," Seira elaborates. "We would need to play it by ear, obviously, but one possible course is conceding on clause three while trying to advance my proposal of having Celestia purchase the slaves en masse, or even a clause allowing the slave owners to only sell their slaves to Celestia's agents. The fifth clause can also be played on; as we have some potentially-valuable intelligence on Shar's movements, we could well allude to that without committing to anything certain. Furthermore, we could volunteer the Cauldron's investigative services for this matter, and I am willing to make tackling Shar's schemes on Fire a priority over her other plots. The first clause as it was had some ambiguous language, so rather than tackling it I decided to see if we could put a different spin on things. At the same time, it allows us to retreat from it to their original version without losing much of what we actually hope to achieve. Incidentally, the edits to clause six are my answer to that original ambiguity, to see how they like it. Naturally, two is what we absolutely must gain. We can weaken our demand for execution, so a compromise there is possible, but the core of emancipation going forward is crucial to the deal. Thoughts?"

A pause as everyone reads, but it is Cresiel who speaks first, "The crux of this is if we can get the efreet to agree to that under any pressure. My Lord?"

Barachiel reads, "It may be possible, for Chronias is with us. Also, six may fail, because I believe they chose three to prevent the two of us from banding together and the council becoming deadlocked with ties."'

"A numbers game," Elle murmurs, tapping a finger against her lips, pausing. "Do we have a fallback position if 2 is untenable or is that our bottom line?"

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 08, 2018, 01:41:58 PM
"The idea is that we give them victories. This will put two proposals side by side, intentionally similar in format and substance. They can win over every clause but the second, and we still come out ahead but they can take pride in driving us back everywhere else. Also, when we withdraw from these unrealistic positions, we move towards a compromise rather than all the way back. The aforementioned offer to pay for the slaves, or to open the subject to the individual efreet, while not ideal, would still amend the status quo to a better one, and one we could work with. On the Shar intelligence, the offer to do the job for them and take the front lines in that battle on Fire without risking the Sultan's own agents, and so on."

"I agree," Vel Custos speaks up, "Let the slavers be punished and stopped."

Amid all of this Jetina's quiet, but finally adds in, "It also means nothing if they aren't willing to budge on it."

"Nonetheless, it is a good proposal," Barachiel gestures and the flames copy themselves, becoming a sheet of paper in his hand. "The Grand Sultan wishes to meet with myself and Seira, and we can bring a person or two more if we desire. Meanwhile, the rest of you are free to enjoy the grounds, in the words of the Sultan. Use this time productively - talk to our enemies and see what you can learn of them. A stray word may lead to victories."

That's fine.

You are escorted along - up a stairway and into deeper wealth. Ahead of you is the gaping maw of a red dragon, stuffed and wide enough for several Hannas to walk through. Through it is a room decorated all in gold and rubies - everything is made of those two things, down to furniture of them. The reddish sparkle is overwhelming, a window letting in fire-light from off the sea of flame you can see through it. At that window the Grand Sultan stands, back to to you and hands behind his back.

"Barachiel, Seira," he greets, watching the dancing flames in the sea, of lava beneath it, of burning and liquid rock splashing. "I find that when my mind is disordered, the sight of Fire's natural majesty focuses it through its sheer beauty."

Lady Honeydip respectfully stays quiet while Barachiel says, "It is much for me, except with the light Chronias."

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 08, 2018, 03:14:56 PM
The view is fast - a lava sea with flame bursting from it. It is far below yet the flames leap up to window level and higher. Flames of a bright red with tinges of orange, as well as the occasional streak of yellow. They dance endlessly, crackling in a sea that will never grow cold and still. From here you can see that the sea goes on farther than even your divinely enhanced eyes can perceive.

"Crimson. A beautiful word, one you know well has power." The Grand Sultan declares, "Your exploits during that time are legendary, Seira." His gaze stays out over the ocean, taking it all in. "I call this the Crimson Sea, though it is known by another name on the maps. Pah. Let them call it what they will. They cannot understand those like us, those who are more and see so clearly."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

She can't help but briefly wonder whether the others present can indeed see all the way to the edge of the lava sea.

"Thank you," she responds politely, before giving him a mischievous smile. "You know, one of those exploits was naming a mountain range after my girlfriend. I had them change the maps, too."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 08, 2018, 03:25:51 PM
Barachiel seems content to let the two of you talk, two more sets of eyes on the two of you.

To this the Grand Sultan laughs, "It is good and it is right. Had you not had your eyes on a bigger prize, I would wonder why you do not rule Pallanth, the Baronies or any of those realms. You are an empress, few can compare to you. Your will is imposed onto the world and the world obeys."

The Sultan has a goblet in hand from nowhere, as if it was always there. He has a sip before declaring, "Before my rise, ants scurried about and tried to compete against me. After my rise, I see truly how small they are. You understand that?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 08, 2018, 03:32:31 PM
"I think I do, although I prefer to overestimate my would-be enemies rather than belittle them," Seira muses. "Taking things seriously is a lesson I've paid a hefty fee in blood, tears and sweat to learn. Although now that I think about it, I did have a goblin archnemesis, the bandit king Yezrut. He and his entire family carried a powerful enmity towards me, but try as I might to act otherwise, I just found it hilarious!"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

The Grand Sultan chuckles at this, "Goblins! I hear your legends of facing down an empire, defeating a horror of Beyond or freeing the children of Androlynne. And yet your archnemesis is a goblin!"

"Do not underestimate small creatures," Lady Honeydip's tone is cool, just polite enough. "We can hold the line as well as any other, no matter what the average is."

"You, Moore and Afina of Aurora have all made a strong reminder of the power of Titania's children," The Grand Sultan agrees. "More, of the three of you, only Afina is a broken soul."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 08, 2018, 03:46:31 PM
"Life can go in strange directions, sometimes," Seira muses. "I had a chance to seize power early on, after taking down that empire and eliminating its leadership. And even afterwards, I had considerable influence in four of the five major mortal realms on that Prime. But in the end, I wanted something uniquely my own. Something I could form from the ground up and have those like-minded join me, rather than reshaping an existing empire."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 08, 2018, 03:55:45 PM
"I have thought the same," The Grand Sultan admits openly, "Every Sultan considers it, I believe, for when dealing with the tiresome messes of the past become too much." Turning his burning gaze to Seira, "You are something like Eblis as well, just as I thought. You will not bow, you will make your own world and own kingdom."

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

Turning back now, "You vexed him decades ago. Eblis hates losing." A sip of his goblet, turning back out to watch the flames. "What was that mortal Lathanderite that the two of you fought over?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 08, 2018, 04:10:58 PM
"It was a close thing, but I was the tiny bit luckier that day," Seira responds, gazing out at the flames alongside him. "Eblis's pastime is to torture mortals, often to get them to break the way he likes. Many of his sons learned that from him. I found that anathema, as one who wants to uplift the mortals as much as possible. Looking back, it was the first time I participated in the Competition."

She grins, then. "As for Valar, he had recently finished a successful deployment where I had him in charge of a subjugated empire previously lead by a Sharran cult as powerful as it was debased. Within a generation, he had managed to undo much of the harm to the people, and I've recalled him home so that he is available as one of my generals once more."

Ready to take his place alongside Lady Honeydip on the front lines, should this war proceed and expand, and just as ready to uproot Sharran cells that threaten Fire and the Grand Sultan himself, depending on how negotiations turn. Seira doesn't need to even imply it, as the Sultan's knowledge of Valar should make those implications beyond obvious.

As everyone sits, the seats impossibly comfortable despite being solid gold and ruby, "You still remember what it's like to be a mere mortal and appreciate how far you've come, how gratifying it is to be more than another minion." The Grand Sultan says, "So do I. Barachiel here is ancient. How ancient I know not, but the ages roll off of him like sparks."

"Age brings wisdom," Barachiel says with an almost smile.

"My wisdom earned through the ages tells me one thing: That we can understand each other and work together, Seira." The Grand Sultan of the Efreet says. "We understand so much - as well as business."

I agreed not to interfere in this conversation, unless you choose to draw me into it. He wishes to understand you better.

"So we can," Seira agrees. "As we understand one another better, we might even find further points of mutual interest. There may well be other possible ventures to cooperate on. I'm hopeful about a lot of things!"

"You have much," The Grand Sultan says, "You understand what it is to impose your will on the world and others. You are willing to stand on your own and be triumphant." A sip now, a long gaze at you. "Yet you constrain yourself by following the path of Good. Why? How much grander would you be without those limitations? You have shed so many, why do you remain tethered to those?"

"'Correlation does not imply causation'," Seira quotes, after a few moments of silence. "Do you know that saying? I've wondered about your perception of me ever since I saw the draft of your proposal group the Cauldron and Celestia together, and this suggests my assumption was right. You have been thinking that Celestia and myself are walking in lockstep, correct? That there is a central authority providing us both with instructions?"

"No, I do not," The Grand Sultan says, meeting your gaze as you speak. His is a burning gaze, a dreadful thing in a moment as you feel all the flames of the efreet, like an overwhelming and choking agony. "Yet the Heavens cooperate. Or do archons march on the Court of Stars to raze it to the ground?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 09, 2018, 01:46:59 PM
"Allow me to explain this, then," Seira says. Her own gaze is earnest without slipping into gullibility, and yet inspiring! Her flames are the flames of hope, of never giving up and trying again, and she had earned a place at this table fair and square, so she doesn't look away. "I do not follow the directives of some nebulous Good. Perhaps some of my friends from Celestia do fall in line with Chronias's will over their own. Perhaps some of my other friends from the Court of the Stars are devoted followers of Queen Morwel's ideals that forsake their own in the process. But overall, we seek to act as we believe we should, and that happens to align with Good. When it doesn't, you have the Fallen. You have jaded warriors. You have retired priests." She glances over to Barachiel, and then to Lady Honeydip, before returning her own burning gaze upon the Grand Sultan. "I am following my path, which for the purpose of this conflict happens to be the same path that my friends here are following. It it not a tether, but rather a set of beliefs that bring us closer despite our many differences, in thought and in deed. Our bonds form the core of our strength, which is greater combined than the sum of the individual parts. How could following my heart and pursuing my goals to the best of my ability possibly be called a limitation? How could our great strength in unity possibly be seen as a constraint?"

Barachiel merely remains quiet as he promised he would.

Lady Honeydip adds in after, "The Fallen, those who lose hope, those who stop caring. Those are evil. There is no freedom in evil save to do evil and to surrender what is better."

The Grand Sultan listens, "Where will your path lead you then, Seira?" He finally asks, "Where do you travel to?"

"I have spoken to Antenora. I have spoken to Zariel. A little-known fact about me is that for a brief period during my mortal years, due to a balor's trap I experienced the influence of evil in person. You might find me in a unique position of understanding first-hand just what it means to have a... freedom of moral constraint, shall we say? And its fruits are regret. None of the many who have followed that path have a single happy memory of that time. None have any satisfaction. What comes up the most is a sense of emptiness, of regret, and it is one that I can corroborate myself from my first hand experiences."

Looking at the Grand Sultan, Seira repeats, "Where will my path lead me? There are the selfish reasons, of course, the vanity and many other things that are a part of my nature. But more than anything, I want to help. I want to work together with those who were until now, going by conventional wisdom, my would-be enemies. I want to raise mortals ever-higher, and help them build better societies. I want those efforts to lead towards creating a better Creation, and it is one goal which I think all but a very select few would welcome."

"In the end, it returns to mortals," The Grand Sultan says, "Another way you are like Eblis, even if you benefit them rather than burn them." He smiles slightly, "Does she remind you of him, Barachiel?"

To this Barachiel merely says, "At times," he admits, "Eblis has a firmness to him that Seira does not, but they share so many of the same traits. They both have the same determination, though Eblis's is stronger and stubborner because of his pride."

"A good player protects his pieces," The Grand Sultan remarks, "A great player sacrifices pieces to accomplish greater goals."

Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 09, 2018, 02:59:11 PM
This is the original proposal by the Grand Sultan:

This is our counter-proposal:

"We wanted to put our wishes out there, but as with any negotiations, I expect that both of us shot far enough to be able to meet somewhere in the middle," Seira responds. "Since the proposals were both to the point, I would be happy to follow suit in the actual negotiations with the understanding that this directness does not in any way imply disrespect."

She points at their counter proposal. "Clauses two and three form the core of our ideals. To put it simply, all of us do not wish to see people enslaved, each for our own reasons. However, as with any true negotiations, we are willing to go a great deal to try and find a solution that is acceptable to you. After all, Waukeen teaches us that the best deals, the ones that endure the test of time, are those where both sides profit."

Since I saw a certain person lurking super late...

"The honorable slave trade has been a part of efreet culture since times of the tribes." The Grand Sultan smiles knowingly, "Formalized by the Crimson Firebrand in his reorganization of the efreet into the empire you see today, it is an integral part of the world. Slaves are used properly for the greater glory of all efreet."

As he speaks, Seira can notice a feeling. A feeling of heat, a feeling of being sized up.
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 10, 2018, 06:39:05 AM
"The Crimson Firebrand shaped efreet culture as we know it," Seira agrees. It just so happens that she has a difference perspective on this matter. "His actions brought your people together, and he is justly revered for his actions. Yet they existed in a far different society, a far different Creation than the one that exists these days. Had the Crimson Firebrand reorganized the efreet today, would he have taken the exact steps he had in the distant past? I humbly submit that he would have sought to find the solution that would take the efreet as high as they can go, and wouldn't have let any and all ancient values stand in his way. After all, had he been so bothered by every aspect of tradition, the efreet would still be living in tribes, rather than organized in the magnificent City of Brass."

Seira pauses, visibly considering her words before giving up with a little sigh. "There is no palatable way of saying this, but since the Crimson Firebrand, successive rulers have been seen as caretakers, haven't they? There is a clear divide. The first Grand Sultan established the rules of efreet society, and those who came after him have enforced them. He is the first among equals, as the saying goes." She looks back into the Grand Sultan's fiery gaze. "I say these things not to insult you, but to make this observation. The Crimson Firebrand stands apart not merely for being the first, but for having the shaping effect on efreet society that he had. For daring to go outside what was seen as obvious and acceptable at his time, and leaving that as his legacy. It is my belief that you have the same chance here to reshape society, and advance the efreet cause across the planes. The status quo will endure no longer, not as these winds of change blow through Creation, from Nessus to Chronias. But there are more options available than capitulation to foreign demands or turning Fire into a second Avernus, the battleground of a new Blood War. I am asking you to reorganize the efreet empire into one that matches the times -- that thrives in this new climate, being the first to capitalize on the changes in Creation!"

She points at the third clause, saying, "In our private negotiations last night, Celestia agreed to purchase the existing slaves if you were willing to change efreet society in this way. That would mean an explosion of capital alongside a clear sign of support from your traditional enemies. And it would be your chance for establishing a legacy of growth and success in expanding your sphere of influence. Imagine, if you will, a planar power that has the ear of both the Hells and Heavens. An alternative to Mechanus, where it comes to negotiations and deal-making. An explosion in trade, as Fire dominates the commerce on the Inner Planes, aided by the powers of Good rather than impeded, for I seek not to humiliate or put down Fire, but to help it find true greatness. We've spoken earlier of our propensity for providing new names when they are needed. With that thought in mind, would we have a partner in the Crimson Sultan, one who picks up the cause of efreet advancement where the Crimson Firebrand has left off?"

DM note: Several posts were deleted. Long story.

Your words are listened to, silence as you speak. When you at last stop, the Grand Sultan merely asks, "How will removing so much of the efreet's labor pool be compensated for in the long run by treasure? All of your words aside, what do they provide that can replace what they give up? You ask of us to give you an arm and a leg, and thank you for the privilege!"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 12, 2018, 05:26:21 PM
"We've already discussed compensation," Seira notes, sad that she failed to sweep the Sultan with ideals. That's what separates the Crimson Firebrand types from those who follow them, perhaps? "Investing wisely would continue to bring revenue, while hiring actually competent professionals would allow for more profits through lowering security needs alone."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 12, 2018, 05:33:47 PM
"How about something else?" The Grand Sultan smiles, steepling his hands together, "Other things that could satisfy you rather than this notion about the slave trade. A hoard worthy of a dragon of your caliber, Seira?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 12, 2018, 05:45:23 PM
"I'm afraid that I am unwilling to let the practice of slavery continue," Seira tells the Grand Sultan quietly. An earnest plea got ignored, while a generous counter-offer was expertly dodged, so it is time to resort to the truth. "I was prepared to try and work through diplomatic channels, and I must admit to being quite cross when I heard that Celestia began striking at efreet targets. Open warfare seemed like a prelude to events none of us wanted or could even predict their course."

With a flash of fire, the Sultan's original draft proposal appears in her hand. "But this? To sign a binding accord perpetuating this wrong? Approving it openly, when even the present status quo was already a burden? I'm afraid that is unacceptable. Once you've brought things to this point, you've turned this into an issue of values. As a simple matter of honor, none of us can back down from our ideals. In recognition of how badly a widened conflict would be for everyone involved, we have debated this matter and agreed to make a great many concessions that benefit the efreet empire and yourself, at great cost to us. But the one thing we cannot compromise on is our principles, and now you understand why."

The draft disappears again, and Seira says, "We come here before you as representatives of different realms, with different wishes and goals, but on this we stand united and our allies will do likewise."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

At this Barachiel speaks up, "I have left Seira speak so that you understand us. We are not weak children afraid to go to war. We can fight you and we will see the City of Brass broken before us, never to be rebuild. We can triumph and will triumph if needed. Fear of Shar will not save you." He does not turn away from the Grand Sultan's gaze the entire time, "We stand for what is right." He offers a hand out, "Come with us or stand against us, but no longer will slavery be tolerated."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan

"There is much to gain by realigning closer to us," Seira echoes Barachiel, "just as there is much to lose otherwise. The choice is yours, Grand Sultan, of whether the efreet are on the way to ascendancy, in peace and enjoying a shared front against Shar and others who would seek to harm them... or fighting a war on every front, one that by its nature will be a total war."
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 13, 2018, 01:09:17 PM
"You will risk the destruction of everything over this?" The Grand Sultan challenges you two right back, "Even as you find yourselves smashed against the swords of efreet strength of arms? For what gain do you wage war in a time that makes your objective irrelevant?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Corwin on November 13, 2018, 01:25:06 PM
"Because it's the right thing to do," Seira instantly responds. "Because the battle against Shar is a battle of ideas, and if we compromise our own we can never hope to defeat her. Because there are compromises we can live with, and those we cannot. Because I'm trying to form a better Creation for my children."

She tries reaching him again; appealing to his greed had failed before, but repeated appeals to the Grand Sultan's ego may yet bear fruit, especially as she pairs them with the unlikely companion of cold logic. "Sultan, I implore you to work with us, for all that I've told you is the truth. Your legend could surpass the Crimson Firebrand's, as the one who took efreet society out of its tight social circle and into the greater planes, as the one who stood shoulder to shoulder with those who defeated Shar and thus had a say in the fate of Creation going forward. Look at your terms again. It defers this conflict, nothing more. What say will you have in the future? Our proposal, on the other hand, seeks to end the conflict for good. It offers you a seat at the table, and it is the most important table in existence. Look at the recent conflict upon the Prime of Lifasa. Would you rather be Tiamat, defiant and powerful, needing several deities banding together to drive her away? Yet drive her away without accomplishment they did, while Auril came out in support of the liberation movement, and has a stake in that world as we speak. Who made the better choice? Which one is to be yours?"
Title: Re: The Grand Sultan
Post by: Anastasia on November 13, 2018, 01:39:41 PM
Sitting back after that, the Grand Sultan is about to speak when Barachiel adds in, "You can choose to step forward or step back. With all the hounds that nip at your heels, stepping back is stepping into them. When a Sultan proves ineffective, a coup follows with a new Sultan."

"You ask what I cannot give," The Grand Sultan shakes his head, "You know this."

"You can abolish slavery," Seira insists. "You can present achievements to many of your people who don't truly care about slavery, and if it becomes possible to speak of this publicly, I think you'll find that more than you would expect would actually approve of this move. At the same time, you have a chance to receive our aid to deal with threats, both foreign and domestic. We are already prepared to deal with Shar -- to prioritize the threat her agents pose here above her other ventures. And your domestic challenges would be those who would refuse to align with us. Celestia had shown that it can deal with such individuals, who are too far gone to be negotiated with. I assure you that the Cauldron is no less competent in such matters. Growth, trade, power; the efreet will have all, and you will be the one to deliver it to them. As for honor, tradition and pride? It all depends on the presentation. The concessions you manage to gain from us, your vision for the efreet nation out across the planes and domestically, on Fire. If that vision is sufficiently bold and far-reaching, you will sweep your people along with you and be venerated for it! At the core, do you not believe in your ability to transform the empire in your image?"

"Do you understand what it means to turn Fire into a second front for a planar conflict?" Seira asks the Sultan. "What the cost in lives will be for the efreet? There may not be enough to be called a species afterwards. And as for your natural allies? Avernus had sent troops to support the devil regime on Lifasa, and Lifasa was liberated, while the Bronze Citadel had a change of owners. Even if the devils were eager to split their forces for another adventure so soon on the heels of that defeat, it will end exactly the same way. And it will all happen because you've escalated, Sir. You've done it with your retaliation strikes against Celestia, and again on the diplomatic front with your offer. If we leave here without an accord, even suing for peace later on may no longer be possible, whether because those you bring over to your side will co-opt the war or because after so much bloodshed, stopping short of our goal may well be unthinkable to some. And what of your own plans with Eblis? They will not proceed, not with this war, even if Shar sits things out and doesn't bother you. A personal cost to pay, along with the one made by your people."

Seira shakes her head slowly. "And all that for what? For us, freedom is one of the most exalted values, yet for the efreet owning a sentient is merely convenience. A business decision. A nod to tradition, true, but plenty traditions have changed with the times. New comforts are adapted in a flash. We live in palaces rather than travel across the land as nomads, staying in humble tents. We employ useful magic equally, whether modern or ancient. Your own views, expressed earlier, stated your lack of moral strings and a freedom to act as you will. What ties you to this course of action, then? This course, which will be terrible for us, and apocalyptic for you? One, which could be avoided if you took the right step in this moment in history, and abolished a tradition that no longer fits in today's Creation?"

"Enough!"

The Grand Sultan's voice booms across the room, silencing your words.

"I extend a hand in friendship and diplomacy to you, Seira! Yet you come here and dictate terms, speak of my destruction and refuse to engage in my negotiations in earnest. You tell me to become a puppet to your interests and expect me to thank you for it!" Rising, the Grand Sultan says, "You know why others have not succeeded at the very goal you champion? They fail, Seira. They challenge us and fail."

"You knew our goals from the very beginning," Seira responds, her own words resonating across the room without being needlessly loud. "You insulted us with your proposal, and refused our own offer of friendship. You further insulted me with a bribe, which I chose to ignore out of respect for the negotiations." She rises herself. "So be it. I make you this promise, Marrake. I will fight with everything I have, bring every ally to the table, and will not rest until the evil of slavery has been eradicated from Fire."

Turning towards Barachiel, she says, "We have nothing further to seek here."
