User level. They rise with more posts. Alternately, if you're a moderator or admin, you automatically get 5 on the boards you moderate. I forget the exact number of posts needed for each level, but I want to say the fifth and final box is unlocked at 1000 posts.

You're a mod on the Numenera board there, so you have 5 there. The color also changes to signify mods, global mods and admins. Admins are red, global mods are blue and regular mods are green. Incidentally, being a board's chosen moderator (green) overrides being a global mod for color (blue). I'm a global mod, but I'm green on this board since I'm one of the mods of it. (Rather redundant since I'm a global mod, but it's one of those little things that's never been changed. No big deal.)

Incidentally again, most skins show them as stars, not boxes. The current default skin just happens to use boxes, I believe. They're stars for me on the skin I use.

So fanfiction and wuxia/light novels often have a theme of reincarnation/SI where the main character ends up in some story they know very well and using their knowledge to become the hero when the role they were inserted into is either a villain or a side character.

Now there's an OFFICIAL spin-off manga about a guy inserting into the role of Yamcha of Dragon Ball.

The artist/writer is Dragon Garow Lee, the guy who did a DBZ/OPM x-over doujinshi and Vegeta: Prince of Dance doujinshi.

I'm not sure how I feel about that. ALL of that, really.
