(Sunday Official Guide)

Zusetsutaizen Ougikaiden
(Encylopedia of Charts and Diagrams as well as the Mysteries in Inuyasha)[1]

By: Rumiko Takahashi

Published: Shounen Sunday Comics

The following are the charts in the book that measure up the characters. Each character has two charts, save for minor characters, who only have one. The first chart measures six different attributes about them and the second chart is their "Shikonzu" or "Four Souls Chart." You might remember that earlier in the series, Takahashi explains about the four aspects of the soul and thus, these are itemized and ranked for the main characters.

Not all of the characters physical attribute charts are the same, for example, Inuyasha's chart has "Youryoku" or "Youkai Power" but Kagome's chart has, in its place, "Reiryouku" or "Spiritual power."

Inuyasha as well as Sesshomaru also have on their charts, "Kyuukaku" or "Sense of Smell" where as some characters have "Ganriki" or "Perception" in its place.

All ratings are from 0 (being non-existant) to 5 (being vastly superior). Two characters with a five in the same stat may or may not be at the same level, but they are at the top of the charts and have probably exceeded the alloted space for the chart.

Here are the various physical and mental attributes that are featured in the six-pointed charts (Clockwise from the top):

  1) Wanryoku (Physical Strength)
  2) Seimeiryoku (Vitality)
  3) Kyuukaku (Sense of Smell) / Ganriki (Insight, power of observation)
  4) Youryoku (Youkai Power/Ability) [2] / Reiryoku (Spiritual Power/Ability) [3] / Houriki (Buddhist Spiritual Power) [4]
  5) Chiryoku (Intelligence)
  6) Shunpatsuryoku (Speed/Explosive Power)

Here are the four attributes that appear in the 4-pointed, diamond-shaped Shikonzu (Clockwise from the top):

  1) Kou [Laid waste, rough, rude, wild] - (Yuu) [Courage] (Opposite of 3)
  2) Kushi [Strange, strangeness, curiosity] - (Chi) [know, wisdom] (Opposite of 4)
  3) Wa [Harmony, Peace] - (Shin) [Familiarity] (Opposite of 1)
  4) Shiawase [Happiness, blessing, fortune] - (Ai) [Love] (Opposite of 2)

Notes:

[1] Yes, I had to take some liberties with the name . . . as the kanji compounds were rather scarce and the rest I had to divine meaning by context.

[2] "You," from YOUkai, literally means "attractive, bewitching, or calamity" and in this case, I would more accurately translate Youryoku as "The ability to use one's innate evil magic," or something similar. As you might guess, only Youkai are given this as an attribute in their respective charts.

[3] Reiryoku, as you might guess, is only given to non-youkai.

[4] Houriki is for Mikroku only.

I will have more out when I feel like going through the rest.
