NPC Roster

This post will become a list of NPCs well-known throughout the city as well as those encountered by the players during IRC sessions. It will be updated on a regular basis as these individuals become better known by the PC cast. Keep in mind, of course, that each individual PC may not know everything listed here, but it should serve as a useful reference for players.

Adamsen, Thomas: A professor at Margranth's. He has not become actively involved in the story, but the PCs have heard several things about him. He is a member of the board of directors at the University, he works in both the magic and science departments, and he is known to dress in an archaic fashion much like his protege Simon Garderov.

Aedes, Marnie Borestal: A fabulously wealthy socialite who lives in East Riding. Her estate is often the site of elaborate parties. Marnie is tall for a woman, nearing six feet, and is rendered even more distinctive by her penchant for wearing flamboyant wigs (which she apparently does all the time).

Bigod, Joran: Present chancellor of the University. Also a former Chief Administrator of the Registry, and he is known to maintain close ties with this agency. Joran is a tall, well-built, and imposing man despite his age (he looks to be pushing sixty). His hair is stark white, but has not receded an inch. He keeps it cut off straight just above his shoulders. He has piercing blue eyes, and a tendency towards wearing circular steel-rimmed spectacles only enhances this effect.

Blasingame, Graeme: A University student participating in the now-defunct duelling group. Tall, with brown hair. He supposedly constructed the group's underground meeting place, suggesting an affinity for basic earth materials.

Brightreef, Imelda: A student at the University participating in an illegal student duelling group which was recently shut down by the party. She is known to be the daughter of middle-class merchants native to Westborough, and it was while accompanying them to Dockside to get a look at the family business (overseeing shipping concerns, in this case) that she encountered Hugh Cronin. Seventeen years of age. She has light green hair and demonstrates an affinity for water.

Cronin, Hugh: The leader of a band of students who gather covertly for magical duelling--and, according to Cronin, to prepare for some upcoming civil conflict. He is tall, blond, and apparently hails from Dockside. UPDATE, 9/24: The party has since deposed Cronin and turned him over to the Registry (after a healthy brainwashing session, of course). It is now known that Cronin forced his way into Imelda's group on the orders of a Dockside boss named Dane Culathein.

Crossbill, Evan: Another member of the student duelling group, apparently one of the founding members. Evan seems to hail from somewhere within Dockside. He has stated that the duelling group was much more carefree and benign before Cronin's entrance, and that he is glad to see the circle disbanded. Evan is of middling height (he's supposedly sixteen) and has black hair. His magical abilities are as yet difficult to define, but he has been seen to be capable of generating red force bolts.

Cuesniet, Meredith: A linguistics teacher at the University. She looks to be in her twenties somewhere. She has short black hair and clear green eyes; she is attractive in a slightly tomboyish fashion (despite favoring long dresses in her wardrobe). Seems to be on friendly terms with professor Rivers. UPDATE, 11/10/07: Meredith is now suspected to be working with Simon Garderov and Alethia Rivers on something but refuses to give details and actually threatened the PCs with violence when they persisted in questioning her about it.

Culathein, Dane: A dockside boss and known criminal. Among other enterprises, he runs a brothel called the Tree of Pearls. Though he has not yet been directly encountered by the party, perusing the thoughts of Hugh Cronin let out that Dane is fairly young, has black hair, and is usually accompanied by two female bodyguards.

Darby, Louisa Fitzroy: A sculptor renowned for the staggering level of detail present in her work. She's stated that she's married, suggesting that she was the Louisa Fitzroy who created Margranth University's statue of its founder. She has long auburn hair and is fairly attractive, if a bit snub-nosed. Reportedly, she does all of her work with nothing but her hands. Whether this is true or not, it's hard not to be struck by the sight of her hands on first encountering her--they're constructions made out of gleaming metal.

Ferryman, Justine: An instructor at the University. Middle-aged, with graying black hair, cut short but sticking up a bit in the front. Demonstrates a talent for illusion.

Garderov, Simon: The assistant to one Professor Adamsen, who is known to work in both the Science and Magic halls at the University. Simon was encountered first as an interloper into the duelling circle's activities, and then as an intruder in the very office of University Chancellor Joran Bigod (later, Pilfer found Garderov's name on a note in the Chancellor's desk, alongside that of Professor's Cuesniet and Rivers). Simon is young, perhaps somewhere in his early twenties. He has long blond hair and dresses in an extravagantly outdated fashion. UPDATE, 11/10/07: Simon is apparently suspected of engaging in some unorthodox business with professors Cuesniet and Rivers, but remains closemouthed on the details. He seems confident that his mentor, professor Adamsen, will come to his defense should any accusations be levelled.

Gaukler, Arthur: Publisher of the Reveille, the newspaper favored by the reformists and critics of the establishment. He is an elderly man, perhaps somewhere in his fities. Quite tall and solidly built (if not fat), though he leans somewhat on a cane. He is mostly bald (there's a just a fringe of hair around his head) but maintains a well-trimmed beard (which is thoroughly gray). UPDATE, 11/10/07: Violet has related hearing old rumors about Gaukler being involved with Dane Culathein, but expresses skepticism about the accuracy of currency of such rumors. The truth is not yet known.

Gold, Jennie: Information broker and bar owner, and a well-known resident of Dockside. Urban mythology claims that she won her bar (The Headsman) in a brawl with the former owner. Whether this is true or not, she's clearly seen her share of violent encounters: she's a bit stocky, with a fighter's build, and her nose has obviously been broken a couple times (though she's not ugly, she is decidedly homely). She is also notably well-endowed in the more obvious feminine physical characteristics. Also, while it's known that "Jennie Gold" is a nickname, her real name is not known to the party.

Ipsidra: One of crimelord Dane Culathein's lieutenants. Yet to make an appearance, though Violet has stated that Ipsidra oversees distribution of Dane's smuggled goods. Like Violet, Ipsidra is also a former prostitute and now acts as Dane's bodyguard in addition to her other duties. Ipsidra is also known to be from Kalbemarle.

Locrise, Audra Susannah: Referred to alternately as "The Lady of Masks," The Lich, or "that old bag of bones," according to the disposition of the speaker. Scion of an old aristocratic family and heir to a fortune in land and businesses, she chose the path of a scholar rather than that of indolence. Twelve years ago, through means still unknown to any save herself, Audra underwent a transition to a being out of legend. Soon after, amidst much scandal, she retreated to her country estate, returning to the city only often enough to retain certain privileges with the University. How she spends her time, and what exactly she looks like now, are still matters of considerable debate as well as the subjects of urban legends. She would be a powerful asset if one could figure out what she wants--and bear the stigma of allying with the undead. (C+P from the intro post).

Madda: A young blond woman who waits tables at The Lock of the Maid, a pub frequented by the duelling circle prior to their meetings. She wishes to leave the establishment and the rather run-down district in which she resides, and to this end is seeking employment at the University with Nemesio's help.

Maddox, Elden: A wealthy banker who lives in Calia district and is considered by many to be the focal point of the reform movement. Much despised amongst the residents of East Riding.

Maddox, Susanne: Elden's only child, a striking redhead with a short temper (at least, as long as her father isn't around).

Melish, Judit: An instructor at the University. Judit is a round-faced woman in her forties with curly black hair down to her shoulders. She teaches medicine and anatomy, and seems amiable enough in the presence of students. Is apparently on speaking terms with the lich, Audra Locrise.

Myrson, Wenton: The former duelling circle's gatekeeper, a quiet, brown-haired young man who seems able to open portals through solid matter.

Parrescu, Corran: An inmate at Honre Nathaline's. Apparently a respected member of the University staff some years past, he now appears to be a mental vegetable. It is believed that this condition is the result of a run-in with the lich. UPDATE: It has been confirmed by professor Melish that Corran's condition is a direct result of a duel with Audra Locrise, in which Corran was apparently standing in for someone else.

Rivers, Alethia: A researcher working at the University. Known to specialize in biology, chemistry, and physiology, and be more knowledgeable about such subjects than most in the city. She reputedly spends almost all of her time engrossed in experimentation, even going so far as to sleep on the grounds of the school some nights. She is a short woman, with dirty blond hair cut short in a somewhat haphazard fashion. The most distinctive feature about her is the array of metal nodules seemingly fused to her skin, running along her fingers, visible limbs, and up to her jaw and cheeks. From the way she moves, it's apparent that she's in some way reliant upon this framework for basic locomotion. UPDATE, 11/10/07: It has been suggested that Alethia is involved in some manner with Meredith Cuesniet and Simon Garderov--the latter two have been most evasive regarding the specifics, so the legality of this supposed enterprise is questionable.

Rulea, Cyril: Present Chief Administrator of the Registry and a notorious hardliner. Also a former chancellor of the University. Infamous for his monochromatic wardrobe.

Sandstrom, Bennett: A high official in the BLM. Bennett has long brown hair, and a beard and mustache (all of which is somewhat out of fashion) and looks to be in his thirties or early forties.

Sandstrom, Dala: Bennett Sandstrom's younger daughter. Appears to be about five years of age, has black hair and poor table manners.

Sandstrom, Greta: Bennett Sandstrom's peculiar older daughter, who speaks strangely and mentions living with an artificial friend named "Porciela." She has very light blond hair and looks like she has not quite entered her teens.

Sandstrom, Lily: Bennett Sandstrom's wife. Plain-looking, with black hair just down to her shoulders. It is known that she is Bennett's second wife, and there are mutterings among the more class-conscious citizens of her base origins.

Seljut, Nifsan: After the initial contact with Kalbemarle, the governor at the time, elderly and ill of health, responded to social changes in a manner that could only be described as violently reactionary. After his natural death, the Registry stalwarts decided it best to appoint someone much younger, more personable, and with notably moderate views, in order to dispel bad feeling left over from Governor Mardek's downward spiral. They chose Nifsan Seljut, an up-and-coming BLM administrator of temperate views who they perceived to be easily malleable. This proved to be a miscalculation. Seljut immediately set about implementing his own agenda without paying heed to established power structures--a fact which quickly earned him enemies on both sides. Not loyal enough for Registry officials, not radical enough for the upstarts, Seljut is increasingly isolated in the midst of Avontyne's social schism, with only a few old friends and an eroding band of moderates to reliably carry out his orders. Sesyie, Kryla Virana: Current high priestess of the Fyrdaellan Faith. She is young for one in such a position and, contrary to tradition amongst the upper-ranking clergy, is not a mother (she claims to be a virgin). Honre Kryla has kept the organization aloof from Avontyne's social struggle, to the displeasure of those on both sides who would wish to a score a propaganda victory by having the city's dominant religious body side with them (as well as some among her subordinates). Honre Kryla is a slim, short woman, and younger than one would expect for one in such a position. She has a pleasant, heart-shaped face, soft brown hair, and eyes the color of an overcast sky. Her hair is usually kept back in a braid, often in the style of a maiden about to be married.

Velan, Katherine: Known to be the chief accountant (effectively, the treasurer) at Margranth University, though she has yet to become involved in the story.

Violet: One of crimelord Dane Culathein's lieutenants, and a former prostitute at his establishment, The Tree of Pearls. She now helps keep the books, oversees incoming shipments for Dane's smuggling ring, and "keeps people in line when necessary," as well as acting as a bodyguard for the boss himself. Violet is a fairly short woman, attractive but with cold, uncaring features and shimmering, forest green hair. She also has a noted fondness for fighting with knives.
