Background:
Wilhelmina used to belong to the combat engineering branch of the Earth military until an incident with Adolpha, her favorite flamethrower, in which its fuselage was hit. As a result, Wilhelmina's right arm was a write-off, and only extensive plastic surgery managed to repair the damage to her torso. Her head survived mostly unscathed, save for her messy hair that has since grown back and a nasty burn mark going through her eye on the right side of her face. Wilhelmina decided to keep it to remind herself of the dangers of her beloved fire, and because it keeps people away; she hates people, so that suits her just fine.

With a drop in her combat abilities due to her standard-issue replacement arm, and a refusal to use specialized combat cybernetics on her, Wilhelmina and the military mutually decided to part ways. Sadly, Wilhelmina could not take another flamethrower with her, and was forced to rely on Roberta, her trusted carbine, for protection. After a while on her own as a freelancer of certain infamy, she was approached by a shady pair wishing to form a company together, the offer came along with a shiny, brand-new flamethrower, which ended up selling her on the deal.

Wilhelmina doesn't really care about psychics, geriatrics or politics. All that really interests her is that she gets paid to set things on fire. Or make them explode. Befriending strange new computer systems is also a definite plus, since she doesn't actively hate machinery the way she does people. All in all, she enjoys her job quite a bit.

Looks good, Cor. I spy a typo in the first line of damage figures (there's a 2d6 in there instead of 3d6) but that's about it. Your INT bonus entitles you to know two other languages, you know. You don't have to take 'em if you don't want 'em, I guess, but it's not like it would hurt.

Carthrat

Cor!

I'm taking Connections, I can totally buy you a flamethrower and get you to pay me back. All my skills are team-oriented that way. >_>

Some eras of the last few centuries were characterized by the freedom for anyone, born into any segment of society, to claw their way up to wealth, riches, and fame with only their skill and grit seperating from the rest.

Showing that humanity is always willing to throw away what is best about society in favour of what's more fun (for a few), the most recent generations have seen a return of the time-honored practices of nepotism and inheritance. And nothing made Targo happier than thinking about how much worse things could've been if he'd been born to some bunch of nobodies; instead, he was part of the rather well-to-do Silver family, heavy investors in all things military and industrial. He held many aspirations as a child and was able to fulfill most of them.

He eventually found himself working as a 'strategic assessor' for the private 'security company' of Preying Mantis, known for both it's exceptionally intimdating holovision commercials and it's equally intimidating pricetag.

A sort of cross between a diplomat and an officer, Targo's job was to liase with clients and coordinate plans of action for whatever their corporate security needs involved. No stranger to the reality of these businesses, Targo dealt with both drawing up defence plans for certain installations as well as coordinating very hostile takeovers.

Life was good, but there was a ceiling Targo could never penetrate. He never got to see the big picture, as it were, and despite their smiles and reassurances, he knew that the old boys at the top of Preying Mantis had no desire to relinquish their positions.

Not unlike your typical rock star, Targo found himself in free-fall after a particularly devastating failure. Charged with protecting a research laboratory of Tylon Staryards, his defences were easily penetrated and large amounts of top-secret technical data was stolen. The day before this tragic incident, he'd been followed- he knew he had been- by a strange bald man, one whose face he can't remember and whose tracks he couldn't escape. The entire day he'd spent with a thick headache, and he couldn't think straight. The entire evening still blanks out in his mind. The day after, half the laboratory guards were dead, and the computers had all been crashed and erased.

He'd been the only one who knew the entirey of the labs defences (he keeps secrets even from teams on the ground as a matter of policy, precisely to avoid this sort of thing.) His own company practically disowned him, bumping him down in rank to a mere office drone; he'd had to pay out of his own pocket siginifcant legal fees (the guarantee that preying mantis provided usually drove profits higher, but in this case turned out to be his downfall.) He spent most of his time in his new position trying to trace what had happened to the stolen ship designs, and eventually confirmed that similar craft were emerging from the Aztechnology corporation; a set of industrial concerns that were heavily suspected to have psionic backing.

It wasn't fair! Skullduggery, lying, trick contracts, knives in the back- they were all part of business, as far as Targo was concerned, but you never had to give up your mind. He resigned his position in the company, took his money, and decided to start anew on a different world. He'd never have gotten anywhere; there were only so many young stars allowed even a chance to rise in these businesses, and he blew his.

It'd be the same kind of business, just built up from scratch. He still had some satisfied clients and contacts who could supply him with what he needed- the only difficulty was people. But there was one guy he knew who was dissatisfied with his position, and some of the shadier people he knew told him about this crazy freelancer...

It'd be a start.

At one time Mars had been the focus of a massive long-term terraforming project, before the discover of Stellar Gate technology put dozens of near perfect Earth-like worlds within reach and made the monumentally expensive and centuries long effort of remodelling a planetary ecosystem financially unviable. An isolated backwater of human civilisation nestled paradoxically close to its heart, barely habitable Mars remained home to a few thousand scientists, surveyors, and ecologists, all stubbornly working to bring life to Sol's rugged and barely habitable fourth planet with a budget literally less than a thousandth of what it had been before the first Gate pair was built.

Forrest Powell was the son of two such scientists, having little say in where he would be born and raised, though if he had been consulted he certainly would not have wanted to live on a barren world where the highest form of native life is a persistent genetically engineered oxygen-factory lichen and one can't leave their sealed dome habitat without a respirator and insulated bodysuit - to say nothing of needing anti-radiation medication if you spent too long under Mars' thin skies. Constantly frustrated by the wide open spaces on his doorstep that just couldn't be enjoyed fully, he was only too happy to leave upon reaching adulthood.

First going to nearby Earth, he found himself ill at ease with the massive overcrowding compared to what he grew up with, and his attempts at gaining work on the planet's few remaining natural parks were unsuccessful thanks to a job market saturated with more 'experienced' applicants. Starting to run into debt, he was approached by a military recruiter who painted a picture of learning valuable skills while travelling a galaxy of pristine planets filled with wide open spaces - it sounded like a good second choice at the time.

While he did indeed learn new skills, and found the sterile routine of living aboard a starship or on a base to be not dissimilar to his youth, and indeed there were many planets filled with glorious wilderness and few crowds which he was able to appreciate on his travels, he never could fit in just right to military life.

A competent, if unremarkable soldier, he never really suffered from the regimented and sometimes harsh discipline, but nonetheless chafed at it. Hearing from former colleagues about the benefits of freelance security contracting, he mustered out at the end of his five year tour and signed on with Preying Mantis. Life there was pretty good to Forrest, his talents at frontier tracking and infiltration being put to use on frequent missions to remote colonies - in fact he finally started to stand out, something he'd never done in the military. But opportunities to advance past the first few ranks in Preying Mantis were few and far between, leading to increasing frustration towards his superiors and their significantly higher renumeration packages.

Hearing about Targo's proposed new organisation from a mutual friend, Forrest overcame his reservations based on the spectacular failure that precipitated the man's downfall, thanks mostly to his previously good track record, and came to an arrangement as partners in founding the Lagoon Company.

Corwin

All in favor of naming us the Lagoon company? (y/n)
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Carthrat

I was going to protest, but the only other name I could think of was TargoCorp, which I assume will meet with rejection. Lagoon is fine with me.

Heh. I was wondering how long it would take people to slip into the groove of "Black Lagoon...in SPACE."

Anyway. Eb: Will save should be 17 (10, plus 5 for fifth level, plus 1 for Improved Defenses, plus 1 for Wis mod). Rat: add the +2 for your grenade damage. Otherwise everything looks fine.
