Background: Kenji was offered a military funded scholarship through NERV, due in large part to the efforts of his big sister Ritsuko. Upon graduating High School, he was quickly given the offer by NERV, who having already reaped the benefits of having his mother, and currently the efforts of his sister, saw the potential in having another Akagi on leash. As part of the requirements for the scholarship, he was tested for compatability with the EVA, due to him being in the age range for piloting. The tests were positive, which motovated NERV to recruit him all the more.

Upon entering college, Kenji also entered into military education with the on-campus ROTC unit. The unit began giving him minor physical conditioning, due to his young age. As his education progressed and he grew, he quickly became a target for others on the campus. Seeing this, the commanding officer of his unit began giving him basic hand to hand training, focusing on what his commander learned from his time in the Isreali military.

Upon his graduation, he was commisioned by NERV in the primary function as part of the Bio-Mechanical research team, under Project E. Though part of Project E, the area of research his team focused on was the improvement of the EVA series, which lead to great strides towards completing Unit 02 and Unit 03 and the Mass Production series. Despite this, he has done a great deal of pilot training while still in classes and understands that once the Angles come calling, he will be regulated to piloting as his primary position.
