[22:16] <Kotono> The rest of the travel day passes. The mountains loom above you, as Silver points ahead!" Look" she calls, the remnants of what looks to be a ruined, empty town ahead, "I think we're close now!"
[22:17] <Aaeru> "In there?" Aaeru asks, peering ahead. That town seems awfully empty, and recent experience has taught her it is likely to contain an ambush or an attempt to take their things.
[22:17] <Kotono> "Yes," Silver says, "Follow me, but be careful."
[22:17] <Andria> "I don't have much more gold to offer if we need to bribe anything," Andrea warns.
[22:18] <Aaeru> "It feels nice, doesn't it?" Aaeru asks her. "So freeing!"
[22:19] <Kotono> Josa takes a moment to rub his temple, saying nothing at all. Instead the party follows Silver into the town! It's empty and broken, like a forgotten corpse...say for one building Silver takes you towards. A well kept inn, with THE PIG AND THE POKE written in red on the door. "They're in there, I think," Silver points.
[22:19] <Andria> "...not really," Andrea replies.
[22:20] * Aaeru knocks on the door.
[22:22] <Kotono> On knocking the door opens up! Inside is an immaculate tap room, as if you stepped into a bar in Balmuria. At the bar is a horned man with light yellow skin, flashing you a million gold smile. Sitting at one of the tables is your target - Janson, Wayland and Rubri'Granit. They look to be eating dinner on a glance. The yellowed skinned creature smiles even more, "Ah, more guests! Welcome, would
[22:22] <Kotono> you care for something to drink! Our rates are quite reasonable for the location."
[22:23] <Aaeru> "Huh."
[22:23] <Kotono> Josa stops and stares. He just stares.
[22:23] <Kotono> Simmer looks about, "Oh hey, you're not dead or tormented or anything like that," she says, sighing in relief.
[22:24] <Andria> Andrea does as well, her eye twitching horribly. "You guys...look...okay..."
[22:24] <Kotono> Sylvie's eyebrow twitches a few dozen times, "You look...more than okay..."
[22:24] * Wayland looks up. "..." then turns to the barkeeper. "Is this a joke? Your humor is not appreciated, if so."
[22:24] * Janson looks up in surprise at the first sign of visitors since they got here, then does a double-take and bounds to his feet. "Simmer? Sylvie... you guys, what are you doing in Hell?! I told you not to come!"
[22:24] <Aaeru> "So, uh, nice dinner you're having," Aaeru comments, stepping inside. "We're, umm, here to rescue you. Where's Noel?"
[22:24] <Wayland> "Wait, you KNEW?" Wayland looks at Janson.
[22:24] <Kotono> "It isn't anything I did," Jacoban says genially, stepping back.
[22:25] <Janson> "Remember those voices I mentioned when Noel and Branna died?" Janson says, "That was you the first time, right Josa? I wasn't sure if it was real or some sort of trick, especially since no one replied!"
[22:25] <Aaeru> "He died?!"
[22:25] <Kotono> "It...wasn't...a trick." Josa grinds out, face firmly in his hands. "It was a sending spell! Sending! Magic! We were preparing to mount a rescue mission!"
[22:26] <Andria> "Noel died as well?" Andrea asks, calming down a bit by the reminder that they weren't the only ones facing harsh times in hell.
[22:26] <Kotono> Sylvie slinks down into a chair, shaking her head. She starts to laugh, "I don't...just..." She shakes her head back and forth, "Let's just go home."
[22:27] <Wayland> "We lost them both. One to a chain devil, and one to some sort of acid-spewing dog."
[22:27] <Andria> Andrea takes a deep calming breath as she steps towards Janson and engulfs in a hug. "It's...good to see you guys again though."
[22:27] <Janson> "Right after I got the second message!" Janson nods quickly. "And I wasn't sure since it was in my head the same way Spiny talked to me," he taps his temple. "I replied honestly, though, just in case. Jannath, what if one of you had died like those two did?" he approaches them, dazedly returning Andrea's hug. "We were just lucky Maracha showed us this place."
[22:28] <Kotono> "Someone did," Josa says quietly, as Simmer goes to check Wayland over.
[22:28] * Aaeru comes up to Rubri'Granit, saying, "Hello. Are you alright now?"
[22:28] <Kotono> "I'm free of the puzzle's influence," he says, offering his hand out, "If you can take us home, I'll be damned grateful."
[22:28] <Andria> Andrea's hug tightens, probably making it hard for Janson to breathe, reminded of Brent's death.
[22:28] <Janson> "Oh, Jannath..." he deflates miserably. "This place is horrible. Do you have a way out? We'd payed to use a portal to the astral plane when it opens, but the fee's extortionate."
[22:28] * Janson then gasps in Andrea's metal embrace of pain!
[22:29] <Kotono> "I do, a scroll of Plane Shift," Josa says, tiredly shaking his head, "Form a circle, we're leaving before something else happens."
[22:29] <Aaeru> "Josa can do it," Aaeru affirms, shaking his hand. "It was a horrible, evil puzzle. I sometimes think all puzzles are horrible and evil. Or maybe just the ones I see. They hurt people."
[22:29] <Janson> "Enjoy the chains, Jacoban, I'd say it was fun, but... y'know," Janson waves at their diabolic host, trying to worm his way out and take Andrea's hand, offering his other to Wayland.
[22:30] <Kotono> Jacoban just chuckles, "A pleasure doing business with you. Come back soon!"
[22:30] <Andria> Andrea lets go of Janson, settling for his hand and with a sniff goes do as Josa requests.
[22:30] <Janson> "Like hell," Janson mutters under his breath.
[22:30] <Kotono> Simmer takes Andrea and Wayland's hands, joining the circle, "We all need a long vacation after this."
[22:31] <Kotono> "No, we need to make back the expenses from this trip," Josa says, joining the circle! Once all are united, "We may not arrive near Balmuria," he announces, "But travel on the Prime is infinitely more enjoyable than this. Are we all ready?"
[22:31] <Janson> "Goddess yes!"
[22:31] * Wayland takes the offered hand!
[22:31] <Aaeru> "This isn't a very nice place."
[22:31] <Wayland> "Ready when you are. I miss the grass, frankly."
[22:32] <Aaeru> "It's nice when the sky doesn't hate you," Aaeru adds with a touch of longing.
[22:32] <Kotono> roll 5d100
[22:32] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 5d100 and gets 279." [5d100=66, 32, 40, 55, 86]
[22:32] <Kotono> roll 1d9
[22:32] * Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d9 and gets 9." [1d9=9]
[22:34] <Kotono> Woosh! For a moment there is nothing then you appear! You appear...on a ship's deck? The rolling ocean can be seen off deck, as you notice several bare chested sailors are staring at you with open shock! It looks to be a fine ship, sail catching the wind to drag it along. Most of the men are well tanned and in decent shape, creatures of hard work.
[22:34] <Kotono> Simmer's eyes are lockedon the horizon, body twitching all over!
[22:35] <Kotono> Sylvie looks about and up to the clear blue sky, before sighing deeply, "It's over..." she exhales, "No more fire sky."
[22:35] <Aaeru> "This isn't hell!" Aaeru cheers after a glance up. "Yay! We got back!"
[22:36] <Wayland> "...a boat?" Wayland looks around. "You lads aren't pirates then, I hope?"
[22:36] <Kotono> "Ah," Josa steps forward, clearing his throat, "Brave sailors, if I may? We are travelers blown off course by the capicious zephyrs, cast onto this ship by the whims of fate. If we may enter into conference with your captain, we will be glad to settle things to the benefit of all!"
[22:37] * Aaeru gives Simmer a hug in the meantime, since she really, really looks like she needs one.
[22:38] <Kotono> After this, a barrel chested man steps forward. He wears a blue greatcoat, a pipe jammed in his mouth. He comes forward, arms crossed, "This is the Lord Roth, under the banner of Kelara. I'm captain Mackham."
[22:38] <Janson> "Dry land was too much to hope for," Janson sighs himself and goes over towards Sylvie. "I wish you hadn't come after us there, but I'm glad to see you anyway," he offers delicately, guessing she's none too happy with how untroubled they seemed.
[22:38] <Kotono> Simmer twitches, "Hell...this is really Hell...!"
[22:39] <Kotono> "Ah," Josa steps forward, "If we may retire to cabins, I will disucss this with you at length, as well as payment for this improptu situation."
[22:39] * Aaeru rubs Simmer's back comfortingly. "There, there. Just close your eyes and think warm thoughts."
[22:41] <Andria> Andrea just tries to enjoy the pleasant ocean winds, and try not to think of all that happened in hell for a while, quietly watching the rolling waves and off into the distance.
[22:43] <Kotono> The party is escorted belowdecks, to a room full of bunks. A half hour of waitingpasses, until Josa returns. "Good news - the Captain and I have come to agreeable terms. We're about a week out of Balmuria, depending on how the winds carry us. The captain has requested that we remain down here and not bother the crew, as they are most distressed about us."
[22:43] <Wayland> "We could probably help out, if he likes."
[22:43] <Janson> "Hah, they're distressed? They're not the ones who've seen hell," Janson snorts.
[22:43] <Aaeru> "I can swim!" Aaeru volunteers.
[22:44] <Kotono> "I would rather not be overthrown overboard as a demon or wtich," Josa retorts, "It would be a pity to drown afer all of this, so for the Elf-Father's sake, just cool your ardor and wait."
[22:46] <Aaeru> "Okay," Aaeru agrees, turning towards Janson and Wayland. "Josa says that a lot now. Don't do this, don't say that. You should know too!"
[22:46] <Wayland> "Well, I suppose that's why he's a sweets maker and not an adventurer like us." Wayland nods.
[22:47] * Janson shrugs. "Guy went to hell for us, can't really begrudge him after that," he admits.
[22:47] <Kotono> Josa goes to sit and then lie down on a bunk, "I also near bankrupted myself to finance the trip," he adds, "It will take a lot of work to make up those losses."
[22:48] <Aaeru> "You have really loyal workers to help you with that!"
[22:48] <Janson> "Yeah, about that... I kinda waived our fee with Rubri'grant," Janson blushes and looks down. "Didn't seem right after we sent him to hell, I mean."
[22:48] <Kotono> That does get Josa to sit up, before he just sinks back down. He takes an old, dirty pillow and puts it over his face, "Mercy and heavens, I'm just going to sleep."
[22:51] * Wayland chuckles in spite of everything else.

[20:33] <Kotono> ----
[20:34] <Kotono> Rubri'Granit is found in his bunk. He lies on his bed, staring off into space. He seems at rest, though not asleep and with his eyes open. He looks Aaeru's way, "I have meant to ask...My memory of it is hazy, but were you the one that destroyed the puzzle box?"
[20:37] <Aaeru> "Yes," Aaeru responds. "It made you act weird, and it stole Branna. Then it stole Janson, and tried to pull me! It was a very bad puzzle."
[20:40] <Kotono> "Aaeru, isn't it?" He asks again, sitting up, "I'm not sure if to thank you for your destruction of the puzzle, or condemn you for your rash actions that cast us into that Pit." After long moments he shakes his head, "I'll not condemn a savior, for I know how hard it is to be one. It's far too hard to help and to protect people, and the price of failure can be vast as the earth below us."
[20:44] <Aaeru> "Umm." Aaeru shrugs slightly. "I kinda expected you to thank us for freeing you. But that's not why I did it!" she hurriedly adds. "Umm. It's an evil puzzle. When it possessed you, it said we could solve it. But maybe it was lying? I think it was tricking us, like it tricked you." She sighs. "Maybe you could solve it anyway, but I just... I'm not good with puzzles. Andrea's not good with puzzles or tricking, too. Maybe Janson-- but he was taken right away! If someone smart who makes gargoyles couldn't solve it, I knew I didn't have a chance that way."
[20:45] <Kotono> "What's done is done," Rubri'Granit replies, "I'll not blame you for it." Now looking to her fully, "What is it you came here for?"
[20:45] <Aaeru> "I'm curious."
[20:46] <Kotono> "Curious about what?" He replies.
[20:47] <Aaeru> "Oh, a lot of things--" Aaeru suddenly stops, refocusing. "About where it came from. How it tricked you. How to look out for that if something tries to trick me like that. If I can do something for you. If we can help you after what happened. About what a gargoyle is and how you make one...."
[20:50] <Kotono> Rubri'Granit raises a hand, "One at a time. No need for haste, breath and be like stone. I stumbled on it in a shop, the owner had no idea what it was. Nor did I, until it was too late. A cursed bit of bad luck."
[20:52] * Aaeru nods, listening attentively.
[20:57] <Kotono> "It overwhelmed my mind," The dwarf now frowns, "Insidious and manipulative, using the bonds of magic. Oftentimes you may not know until it attacks...I've learned to bolster my will, but the puzzlebox was strong. Magical wards are best, but impractical to have on you except when you expect them."
[20:59] <Aaeru> "What can I do if I see someone possessed like that again?" Aaeru wonders. "Maybe Protection from Evil would help? I think I can learn that spell if I really try!"
[21:00] <Kotono> "It can often help. It will stop most controls, though I've come across a few that can overwhelm it," He nods, "It also may help to simply render them unconcious and seek help. From thew ay you punched, I'm sure you could do that."
[21:02] <Aaeru> "I probably would've, if it didn't start abducting people," Aaeru agrees, nodding once more. "But I don't like to hurt people. A spell is better."
[21:06] <Kotono> "Yes. As for doing something for me?" He considers before he shakes his head, "Remember these words, and remember them well: There is no darker misery than those who follow the Lady of Loss, Shar. If not for the brave heroes of the Crimson Guard, they would have plunged Kesse and it's surroundings into a generation of pointless bloodshed. There is only one fate for them: Extermination. Shatter
[21:06] <Kotono> their bones, salt the ground with their marrow.""
[21:09] <Aaeru> "When one of those followers tried to kill me, I just hit him until I knocked him out and then we took him to the Guard," Aaeru volunteers, happy to have found a common topic between them. "He was a very terrible person."
[21:12] <Kotono> "Good," Rubri'Granit's voice is fourty degrees colder now, "Of all the evil in the world, Sharrans deserve the worst." After amoment, "To make you understand, the week in Hell was barely a speck compared to the torment Sharrans inflicted on me. They are so vile that Baator can only stare in envy." His fist balls up, "Remember that always. They exist to take from you, to ruin lives, to bring
[21:12] <Kotono> despair. Tell all you meet who can stand against them to do so."
[21:15] <Aaeru> "I think we'll always know that here," Aaeru tells him. "They killed a lot of people back home. It's like before I was born, but everyone remembers it every year. Only a real idiot would just serve someone like Shar, everyone knows that in Erenholm."
[21:18] <Kotono> At that Rubri'Granit stops. He turns his gaze to Aaeru, "You're from Erenholm? I've heard the story of what the Sharrans did there. You know all too well then."
[21:19] <Aaeru> "We're really grateful to Alicia for everything!"
[21:20] <Kotono> "Seira as well, and the rest of the Guard," The dwarf rumbles, "They're the ones who dragged me out of the dungeons when I had no hope left."
[21:22] <Aaeru> Rubri'Granit seems to have the worst luck ever, Aaeru muses at that. "Of course," she agrees. "Was that really the only thing I could do for you? We kind of messed up your fortress... ah, but maybe you didn't want to build it anyway...."
[21:23] <Kotono> "I'll sort it out once we're back on good land," Rubri'Granit replies, "For now...My thoughts and my rest are my concern. 'twas not my finest hour here, and I owe all of you a debt."
[21:25] <Aaeru> "Oh. Okay." Since it seems to be a hint to switch to lighter topics, and she really, really wants to know, Aaeru asks, "Sooo... about the gargoyles?" She smiles expectantly.
[21:26] <Kotono> "A gargoyle is a type of magical beast, like a statue and possessed of Earth. They have wings and can fly. I can make constructs that function like them," he explains shortly enough, "They're fine defenders."
[21:27] <Aaeru> "Is it hard?"
[21:27] <Kotono> "It's a long task to learn," Rubri'Granit says. "I trained nearly a century to master it."
[21:27] <Aaeru> "That's a lot!"
[21:29] <Kotono> "It is," Rubri'Granit chuckles, "I can show you the very basics if you want, but it's a lifetime's labor."

[20:04] <Kotono> ----
[20:08] <Kotono> Ship food isn't the best, but it beats Hell food by a thousand fold. Janson and Sylvie sit together on the rocking, rolling ship floor. Not much has been said yet, until, "...I can hardly believe it," Sylvie breaks the silence with that. "Can you?"
[20:11] <Janson> Considering how expensive Hell food was it should have been fit for a king! "Not many folks can say they've been to hell and back," he chuckles, planting his palm on the deck to steady himself as he sits. "It wasn't really what I expected, to be honest."
[20:14] <Kotono> "I've read stories of the grand city of Dis, or the cold libraries of Mephistopheles," Sylvie picks at her food, going for a long drink of water instead. "I suppose Hell has it's untamed territories.  I just...I can't believe I went and did that!" Sylvie exclaims this, "I left Calley and Mom alone and chased after you at the drop of a hat."
[20:18] * Janson leans against the blonde and puts his other arm around her waist, leaving his mostly cleared plate on his lap, "Yeah, they're gonna be really worried. That first day there, when Branna and Noel died, I was sure I'd be soon after, that Hell would get my soul like it tried to take theirs. I wished we'd had more time, but at least I knew you were safe... thought I knew, anyway," he
[20:18] * Janson shakes his head with a faint smile.
[20:22] <Kotono> "Tried to take their souls?" Sylvie asks, eyebrows raising. "What happened?"
[20:25] <Janson> "Well, they died... you don't really need to know how," Janson grimaces as he recalls the particularly grisly sights they presented, "But afterwards we could hear them screaming, and their ghostly hands poking out of the ground. Rubri'grant said it meant Hell was trying to steal their souls, so Wayland and me had to grab them - felt like solid steam or something weird like that - and pull
[20:25] <Janson> for all we were worth. Their spirits appeared, just for a second, actually thanked him before vanishing off to wherever they're meant to go."
[20:26] <Janson> "After Noel died it felt like they were picking us off one by one. We all knew whoever died last wouldn't have anyone to pull them up," he shivers at the memory of feeling so inevitably doomed.
[20:27] <Kotono> Sylvie's pallor grows, going to cling to Janson. She shudders after, "Ugh, I've read stories about something like that." With a pensive sigh, "Mmm, I'll have to brush up on my planar lore after this, just in case."
[20:31] <Janson> "Yeah, you know when it happens once it's gonna happen again," the ginger-haired warlock brightens nonetheless, returning Sylvie's embrace. "The weirdest thing about it was after that first day, once Maracha guided us to the Pig and the Poke, Hell was just *boring*. I guess I can't complain since we were safe for it, although it cost a fortune. It sounds like you guys had just as hard a time
[20:31] <Janson> of it finding us..." he trails off in invitation for her to share any stories of their travails.
[20:36] <Kotono> "Worse. Six days of torment, fighting for our lives, dodging fireballs from the sky..." She shakes her head, "Ugh. If I didn't know better, we were being mocked. All that effort and you're staying in comfort! I know Josa's plan was hurried and underfunded, but it's infuriating! Absolutely fucking infuriating!" She slams a hand down onto the deck, palm first. "What galls me is that everything
[20:36] <Kotono> we did could've been prevented, and we could've stayed safe while you took a portal home!"
[20:41] <Janson> "Well it was to the astral plane, not home, but we would've worked our way there eventually I figure," Janson gives the blonde a squeeze as she concludes her venting. "But yeah, if I'd gotten those Sending spells a few hours later I could've said we were safe... assuming I replied properly. Having them speak in my head the way that little shit Spiny did didn't really put me on the best
[20:41] <Janson> footing either."
[20:43] <Kotono> "Mmm." Sylvie's rage boils toa mere simmer, "If, if, if, if. What ifs are horrible." With a long exhale of air, turning her attention back to Janson, "I feel more nervous than Josa at a bake sale. I'm still wanting to tense every time I hear footsteps."
[20:46] <Janson> "I'd say we need a holiday but I dunno if we can afford it after this disaster," Janson moans, resting his head against her shoulder. "Maybe some easy jobs again, like finding lost cats?"
[20:51] <Kotono> "Well, some of that plunder is worth good gold and marks," Sylvie exhales again, "It should hopefully keep ups afloat however we end up dividing it. I'll second an easy job. Maybe just reading for a week. Or perhaps fixing a dimensional anchor magic on you."
[20:53] <Janson> "Hah, you'll have me on a leash at this rate," Janson laughs. "Still, before anything else - well, after you go see Calley and your mom, that is - we really need to go out and get hammered."
[20:59] <Kotono> "Well, from the sounds of Aralla, a leash isn't that far fetched?" Sylvie starts to laugh a little as well, "It's high summer, which means mint drinks if we have the money for them. If not, perhaps something like applejack. I've had enough vileness, if I'm going to get drunk, it's going to be on something pleasant."
[21:01] * Janson blushes, "Well yeah, but I escaped, didn't I?" he mutters, before bravely and quickly forging on! "Anyway, if you figure the loot can get us a bundle, I've at least got enough gold for one really awesome bender before we can cash it all in. And I bet stories of this adventure'd be worth a few drinks, too."
[21:03] <Kotono> "Yeah," Sylvie grins, "The night we get back, or the night after if we can't go out immediately. It's a date," She offers her hand out to Janson.
[21:06] * Janson clasps that hand, and then gives her a kiss for good measure! "For a while I was worried I wouldn't ever get to do that again," he smiles widely. "Just a pity we're stuck on this boat for a few more days..."
[21:08] <Kotono> "Yeah." Despite it Sylvie looks up, leaning int o give Janson a quick kiss back, "We'll just have to wait. Until then..."

[20:04] <Kotono> ---
[20:07] <Kotono> Solitude is difficult to find on a ship. There's just not much space, but eventually Andrea finds a seldom used storage room. It's not comfortable, but she can rest against an old, stained barrel and close her eyes. To remember, to dream, to mourn. Left in solitude at first, a day passing...Knock, knock, knock. The sound of knuckles rapping on the wooden door, "Andrea?" You can hear
[20:07] <Kotono> Simmer's voice.
[20:08] <Andria> "Yes?" Andrea replies, not moving from her spot as she keeps her eyes closed. "What's up, Simmer?"
[20:09] <Kotono> "Mind if I come in," she calls, "I have some lunch with me if you're hungry."
[20:10] <Andria> Andrea's stomach chooses that time to gurgle loudly, forcing her to sigh as she stands and moves to open the door. "Come on in."
[20:12] <Kotono> Simmer comes in, a tray carries along. There's some hardtack and what looks to be grilled fish and limes. Simmer steps in, looking about before just presenting the tray to Andrea. "Here." She hesitates a moment, "How're you feeling?"
[20:15] <Andria> "As well as as can be, all things considered. I'm glad we're finally out of hell, but...I don't know," she says with a helpless shrug. "Things don't feel right. How can I celebrate knowing my oldest friend is dead?"
[20:21] <Kotono> "The fey believe that everything is a cycle. Death leads to rebirth, life to death, and eternally repeating." she looks about, before going to sit on an old barrel. "When a flower dies, it's seeds sprout next spring.  The leaves of a tree fall away in autumn, only to return for spring. Death isn't the end, but just another phase."
[20:24] <Andria> Andrea smiles sadly. "I doubt that sentiment will give much comfort to Olan once I bring him the news that he's lost his son..."
[20:26] <Kotono> "Yeah." Simmer also smiles a bit, "Didn't really do me any good when I found my tree burnt down." There's a little pause in the conversation there, "Can he be brought back? I've heard that miracle workers of the Gods can do that."
[20:31] <Andria> "It's possible, but unless one of the gods directly intervenes, it takes a lot of money and power to bring someone back, and I think it needs to be done within a certain time frame too, although I wouldn't have the first clue as to that...anyway, I doubt we'd be as lucky to have Ilmater act a second time and revive him like he did with Wayland," Andrea replies, sighing
[20:31] <Andria> as she picks through the food, not really feeling much of an appetite, but not wishing to ignore her stomach's earlier cry for food.
[20:33] <Kotono> "Well..." Simmer looks up at the ceiling for a bit, "Perhaps..." She considers, "Maybe if we can, and we can pay for some and his father can..." She shrugs again, "But then again, maybe it was his autumn there. Perhaps it was time for his leaves to fall. Do you believe in fate like that?"
[20:36] <Andria> "Fate? No. I can't believe some of the cruel things that happen in this world were 'meant' to happen," Andrea disagrees. "If anything, I suppose it really comes down to Olan's wishes, and then Brent's own if we do try to summon him back to this plane. If it happens, it's because we as humans worked towards it, maybe with a helping hand from those above, but very likely not."
[20:38] <Kotono> "Mmm-hmm." Simmer nods along, "I like that. Fate sounds like a crock of water." She looks over to Andrea's holy symbol, "What about the goddess you follow? How does all that work..." A trailing pause, "There's so many religions in Balmuria, I can hardly keep them straight."
[20:46] <Andria> Andrea smiles a bit at that. "Just because the gods won't control our lives for us doesn't mean they don't touch upon them," she says as she grasps her necklace. "I still stand by my belief that Alicia saved me as a child. Other people will stand by their belief that another god has guided theirs. But it's frustrating to know that they cannot protect you all the time though...
[20:46] <Andria>  it's kind of horrible, but a part of me resents Alicia for not saving Brent too."
[20:46] <Andria> Andrea sighs as she puts the dish to the side, most of the food in it gone.
[20:47] <Andria> "And yet, I keep praying to her to guide me..." she admits.
[20:53] <Kotono> "I suppose there's something to this faith, since I see magic being wrought from it," Simmer admits, "Maybe they give you the power through magic to help you, and it's up to everyone to use that well?" After a pause she admits, "Well, that's about what Sylvie said when I asked her about it one time. She's pretty good at that religious stuff."
[20:59] <Andria> Andrea laughs a bit. "Well, that's certainly true, even if that's not all of it. But all of my magic comes from Alicia, definitely. As long as I use my powers to follow her dogma and do not stray from her path, she will continue to grant me at least that much."
[21:02] <Kotono> "Good. We wouldn't have made it without your healing." Simmer smiles back, "Even if Brent didn't make it, you saved the rest of them."
[21:03] <Andria> "Yes, well, I don't think the skies of hell appreciated my efforts," Andrea snorts.
[21:03] <Kotono> Grinning now, "It wasn't that bad! It was like a bath every time Hell got pissy!"
[21:05] <Andria> Andrea frowns in return. "...For you, sure. Those things really hurt for me and Josa, just so you know. I certainly don't plan on taking you up on your offer of lava baths any time soon after that experience."
[21:09] <Kotono> "Heh, sorry," Simmer's smile dies down, "You know, everything's still so new and so fiery, just when I start to get Balmuria a little we're off to Hell. But I'm having the time of my life doing it."
[21:13] <Andria> "Well, I remember what it was like for you when we first met, so it's good that you took me up on that offer back then if you're enjoying yourself," Andrea replies.
[21:15] <Kotono> Yeah," Simmer smiles now, then with a look to Andrea, "Are you going to stay back here the entire trip?"
[21:16] <Andria> Andrea shrugs. "Maybe? I don't know, really. I like the peace and quiet here, but I might go up from time to time too. I've never really been in a boat before, so it's kind of neat once you get used to the constant movement."
[21:18] <Kotono> "I'll see you up there later then," Simmer says brightly, "Maybe we can barbeque some fish for dinner?"
[21:21] <Andria> "I have no idea. You'd have to ask the ship captain or Josa for permission on that, I guess," Andrea replies.
[21:21] <Kotono> "Heh, I'll talk it out of them!" She grins, trotting up and out, "Ill see you up there for it later!"

[20:25] <Kotono> Ah, air! The starry sky above you is alight, the constellations able to be picked out if Wayland cares to. Warm, summery sea air flows around him, cleaning his nostrils of the stench of Hell. It feels so good, so refreshing! HE basks in it for a goodly time, his reverie only disturbed by another. Josa steps besides Wayland, "Ah. I fair confess that I had missed the starry sky and smell of
[20:25] <Kotono> fresh moving air."
[20:27] <Wayland> "Yes, red rocks everywhere is just too confining."  Wayland says, leaning against a railing, letting the wind hit him.
[20:28] <Kotono> The wind smells of the sea, the fishes, the boat. Josa goes to the railing and looks out, raising his face to be hit by the breeze. "Branna and Noel are no longer with us," he says at last, "We'll have to have a funeral when we return. Did either man follow any particular faith?"
[20:29] * Wayland shakes his head. "Not that I'm aware. They swore a lot, but not to any particular diety."
[20:31] <Kotono> Josa chuckles at that, though his smile doesn't reach his eyes. "I'll hire a priest of Waukeen to say rites." He looks out, "It's far past the vagaries of strange chance that this venture has turned increasingly dangerous and violent. Adventurer's whimsy and chance, perhaps? Perhaps fair Tymora has taken exception to our venture, letting foul Beshaba have her way with us?"
[20:49] <Kotono> Josa chuckles at that, though his smile doesn't reach his eyes.
[20:51] <Wayland> "Maybe. I'll admit that the gods are rather new to my life. I'm not familiar with most of them, to be honest."
[20:56] <Kotono> "Until recent times they were withdrawn," Josa comments, looking out to the sea, "Truly so must you be familiar with Ilmater and his poutice on your mortal coil? I have learned a little of Alicia and Jannath from the others, but I myself know the Elf-Father. 'tis an enterprise that could occupy a sage for a lifetime and not fulfill half of it. Matters of the soul are beyond candy and a
[20:56] <Kotono> mage's grace to influence. All we have is what is written and what the faithful know...yet it is said that those with great magic can go to those realms of Heaven and Hellish visions. We just had, the place where tyrants are tormented for their magnitude of sin."
[21:07] <Wayland> "Well, yes. Of course I know of the Elf-Father, I was raised in Chillander. It's just that...the human lands. There are so many gods...and quite frankly, I have no idea what to do with the debt I owe to Ilmater."
[21:10] <Kotono> "Nor do I," Josa confesses, "Perhaps there is a greater strand at work, part of a grand tapestry the Gods weave...or perhaps it was whimsy. To that I have no answer."
[21:12] <Wayland> "Mmm." Wayland mumbles, gazing out across the starlit sea. "Then there are my own personal goals and debts. I think life would be perhaps a bit easier if I had the foresight to see what I should to to make everything work out well."
[21:13] <Kotono> "Ah. Then perhaps when we return, you can invest in a visit to a diviner? I know a few temples and wizards sell those services if you have enough gold."
[21:20] <Wayland> "Perhaps. I'll decide when we get back, I think. I'm not sure how much good knowing will do."
[21:22] <Kotono> "Think about it," Josa says solemnly, "For if we can gaze on the cast die of fate, we can learn much. A good night to you, Wayland." He turns, going belowdecks and away.

[19:47] <Kotono> It's been a long week at sea. The blue waters of the ocean give way to the green foam of the Bay of Sparkling Stars as you sail in. On deck you can feel the warm, summery breeze rustling your hair. Farther on the horizon you can see the city of Balmuria, your destination. It sparkles in the sun, the light of mythal dancing above it like a crown.  Sailors run about here and there, preparing and
[19:47] <Kotono> steering th eship! Several of them are at the railings, peering down at something as they go.
[19:48] <Kotono> "Finally," Josa exhales to the tips of his feet, "This long ordeal of misery and hellish challenges is concluding. Without any doubt, such was an oddessy I ill desire to ever repeat."
[19:49] * Janson is curious what's got the sailors so excited and goes to look over the edge as well!
[19:49] <Kotono> "Uh huh," Sylvie murmurs and nods in the right places, following Janson without hesitation.
[19:49] <Andria> Andrea sighs. "It's good to see home again, though I still have to face instructor Olan and tell him about Brent..."
[19:50] <Aaeru> It wasn't that long, was it? Thought it seemed that way, Aaeru will gives Josa that. She opts to stay with him all the same.
[19:50] <Kotono> Simmer stays in the very middle of the ship, pointedly not looking to the sides or towards the foamy green waters. She turns towards Andrea, "Want company for it?"
[19:50] * Wayland claps Andrea on the shoulder. "I'm sure he will understand. Hell was no simple walk in the park."
[19:51] <Kotono> Going to the sid eof the ship, Janson can se the sailors are grinning at a beautiful woman below. A sea elf, cute and wearing a few strategic seashells instead of anything covering. She winks up to them, "Keep going this way, you're clear. Tell your navigator it should be smooth sailing into the docks."
[19:53] <Janson> Well that's nice but he has Sylvie right here and isn't dumb enough to ogle! Letting the sailors have their fun he goes back to nearer the middle where everyone else is. "I hope we haven't lost too much business to that other guy while we've been gone."
[19:54] <Aaeru> "Maybe he's still chasing after us?"
[19:54] <Kotono> "Truly so, I hope not," Josa says, "Nature does abhor a vacuum." He closes his eyes a moment, "But that is a trifling concern for when we have solid ground beneath our feet and the fundaments of the sky above us. Let us go home!"
[20:03] <Kotono> Thus the ship arrives at the docks! It is guided in by sea elves, a contigent of soldiers awaiting the ship. Amid them is a tall, muscular man who wears a breastplate. He is bald, perhaps in his mid thirties. He wears a cloak of crimson and carries a longsword. His breastplate has a gauntlet engraved on it, as he looks about at the ship. As the gangplank is lowered, "Hail and welcome," he calls,
[20:03] <Kotono> soldiers marching on board. He follows last, taking a long look over the party.
[20:04] * Janson blinks at the armed reception, glancing at Sylvie. "Any idea what this is about?" he whispers.
[20:05] * Wayland eyes the man in return, a mite bit distrustfully.
[20:05] <Kotono> Captain Mackham comes forward, "Is this a customs inspection?" he asks, voice quite wary. "I assure you nothing forbidden is in our cargo."
[20:06] <Kotono> Sylvie shakes her head, "That's the Crimson Guard," she murmurs back, "Captain Xavier, I believe."
[20:07] <Aaeru> It is only polite and Aaeru waves at the captain as he looks over at them. "Can we help you with something?" she asks, because it's only proper.
[20:08] <Kotono> The bald man shakes his head, "No, good sir. Perhaps you do have a forbidden cargo, but doubtless not what you would ever imagine." Turning his attention again to the group, "You match the description." He peers at them a long moment, "Our seers have seen images matching you tied to the infernal realms."
[20:09] <Aaeru> "Yes!" Aaeru readily agrees. "Our friends were sent there by accident, and we went to get them back! With, uh, Plane Shift!"
[20:10] <Wayland> "I've not spent a great deal of time in Balmuria, is it customary to shake down people who have just recently escaped hell?" Wayland asks, the picture of innocence.
[20:11] <Kotono> "Ah yes," Josa comes forward, "Such is not a lie; we mounted a valiant rescue mission to Avernus, to save our friends. We return in triumph. We are Whimisical Sweets, Captain Wedge will vouch for our identities."
[20:12] <Aaeru> "But why would you need seers?" Aaeru wonders, confused all of a sudden. "We left from Balmuria, umm, a week ago? Josa, didn't you get the scrolls of Plane Shift from somewhere in the city, too?"
[20:12] <Janson> "Not all of us made it back," Janson points out before anyone gets too triumphant.
[20:13] * Wayland nods at Janson.
[20:13] <Andria> Andrea just stays silent, letting Josa and the captain talk things out.
[20:15] <Kotono> "When the infernal realms are concerned," Captain Xavier nods gravely, "No inconvienence is too great." Seeming to ignore Aaeru's question, he focuses a moment. LIght from the Mythal above gleams brighter, before he refocuses moments later. "Thet aint of evil is not on you, and you do not seem to be lying," he agrees, "You're free to go."
[20:16] <Aaeru> "If I ask another question, will you answer that one?" Aaeru asks the captain.
[20:17] <Janson> "That was painless," Janson shrugs, finding it a bit odd but thankfully not an inconvenience, he thus moves to disembark!
[20:18] <Kotono> Josa and Sylvie follow, while Captain Xavier nods, "What is your question?"
[20:18] <Kotono> As Simmer murmurs to Andrea, "Seers? What's all that about, anyway?"
[20:19] <Aaeru> "So when we killed this devil corporal over there, he had a sword. We kinda ended up bringing it back," Aaeru explains her dilemma to the rightful authority of the city. "What should we do with it?"
[20:19] <Andria> roll d20+0
[20:20] <Kotono> "Let me see it," Captain Xavier says decisively.
[20:21] <Aaeru> "It's this demon-hating sword, I think," Aaeru responds, looking around. "Simmer, you got it?"
[20:21] <Andria> roll d20 K:local
[20:21] * Hatbot --> "Andria rolls d20 K:local and gets 18." [d20=18]
[20:21] <Kotono> "Hold on," Simmer goes over to her pack, dragging out the cloth wrapped blade. At this Josa stops halfway down the gangplank, turning his attention to this, "Hold a moment," he murmurs to the others.
[20:24] * Aaeru waits expectantly for Captain Xavier to pass his judgement.
[20:24] <Andria> Andrea takes this time to whisper to Simmer what she knows about seers and the former encounters between the Crimson Guard and the forces of hell.
[20:25] <Kotono> Captain Xavier kneels next to the blade, his eyes on it. He doesn't touch it, his fingers tracing the air above it. "A Brand of Bel," he says, as green hellfire dances in the grooves of the blade for a second. "Hellforged steel and the will of a conquering tyrant. It brings no good to us. It must be destroyed."
[20:26] <Kotono> "Now wait a moment, sir!" Josa takes a few wobbling, waddling steps back up the gangplank, "Our journey was a most taxing and draining one, on mind and spirit as well as our coffers! Asking us to destroy our hard won bounty from it is a dolorous and devastating blow!"
[20:26] <Andria> "What about the bow? You guys couldn't figure it out, right? It was his so it might also fairly evil...?" Andrea pipes up and asks.
[20:26] <Aaeru> "It really wasn't! I checked!"
[20:26] <Kotono> Josa visibly winces at Andrea's words, burying his face in his hands.
[20:27] <Janson> "C'mon, it's just a sword. It kills people, but that's what swords do - they're not supposed to be nice," Janson argues in his boss's support, lingering at the base of the gangplank as he calls up.
[20:27] <Aaeru> "If the Guard pays for Sharrans, does the Guard pay for real devil swords?" Aaeru voices. "I don't really care but Josa is really sad about losing money."
[20:28] <Wayland> "Andrea, Aaeru, can I talk to you over here for a moment?" Wayland says, a disarming grin on his face.
[20:28] <Kotono> Simmer shrugs, "It didn't feel evil when I used it, but what I know?"
[20:28] * Aaeru is far too focused on Xavier to go somewhere to talk to Wayland just yet!
[20:28] <Kotono> Sylvie almost snickers, almost. In a whisper to Josa and Janson, "Gods above and fiends below, we're going to bankrupt ourselves, and it's not even in a vast bender party! What is the world coming to?"
[20:30] <Janson> "If they actually steal our sword we should relocate to a more business-friendly city, I say," Janson mutters back to Sylvie, not liking this turn of events.
[20:30] <Kotono> Smoothly going on, "Yes, the donation of a diabolical artifact for destruction is worthy of a reward," he agrees, as Simmer gets puts the bow out. It gets the same examination, before the captain shakes his head, "There is no evil on it."
[20:30] <Aaeru> "Told you!"
[20:30] <Andria> "It wasn't that I didn't trust you! I just... wanted to make sure. I don't want anything bad to happen to Simmer after we finally go out!" Andrea mutters.
[20:31] * Aaeru blinks. "You and Simmer? When did that happen?"
[20:31] <Kotono> "Ah good sir," Josa recovers himself, while sending pleading looks to Wayland, jerking his head at Andrea and Aaeru after, "I do believe that a proper reward would be appreciated! But you must understand our corundrum, that our pockets are empty, save for the moths of poverty! Is this reward sufficient to assauge our disfortune?"
[20:32] <Andria> Andrea sighs and just waits for this situation to resolve itself.
[20:33] <Kotono> "What about me and Andrea?" Simmer blink-blinks.
[20:33] * Wayland goes up to Aaeru, sliding his hand gently but firmly around her waist. "I really need to talk to you. It's very important. It's about charity and orphans." He says, steering her away from the guard, and toward Andrea.
[20:33] <Aaeru> Well, if Andrea doesn't want to talk about it, that's fine. "Josa had to buy two Plane Shift scrolls and two Sending scrolls and a bunch of other stuff that got left behind," Aaeru adds to her employer's case. "He's really worried about going broke and not making any more candy."
[20:34] <Kotono> Giving a momentarily vexed, almost confused look to Aaeru and company, Xavier turns to Josa. "I would estimate a reward of about a thousand marks for such a fell weapon."
[20:35] <Kotono> "Janson," Sylvie murmurs, "Next time, you carry the bag of holding and all the loot inside, and we tell the others to shut up. Sound good, dear?"
[20:36] * Janson nods quickly. "If I'd known this would happen I definitely would of. Besides," he leans close to her ear, "If these sorts of weapons are forbidden, that must drive the price up even higher."
[20:37] <Kotono> "A thousand! You must understand, good sir! We could sell it for double such if not more! In our perilious financial straights, a thousand is simply unacceptable! Truly so, at least two thousand marks is a proper reward! We bled our red vitae onto the cracked grounds of Avernus for this blade! Good men gave their lives so that it can come to this epoch in time! "
[20:37] <Kotono> Josa goes on and on, "Perhaps then, we can discuss this in a more civilized place? Perhaps we can discuss our differences in peace away from other ears, as I am the owner of this company?"
[20:40] <Kotono> "Yes," Sylvie whispers back, voice barely audible even ot Janson. "Imagine the books it could buy!"
[20:40] <Aaeru> Josa seems to really want to talk about this on his own, even if Aaeru doubts it would do any good, so she has no reason to inject herself into that conversation.
[20:40] <Janson> "At least Josa's putting up a good fight," Janson sighs. "Wish he was more like that when negotiating fees with customers."
[20:41] <Kotono> "Being poor gives him a kick in his big ass." Sylvie's lips twitch with a smile.
[20:41] <Andria> "We lost three good men in that trip, Captain Xander, it would be nice to give them a good funeral," Andrea pipes in, throwing their boss a bone, and she really would like to see that things go well. "So I hope you can understand our boss's predicament when we've lost so much in this trip already and still have costs to pay in the future."
[20:44] <Kotono> Captain Xavier nods at last, "Alright, I'll go up to 1300 marks and I'll talk to a friend to take care of the funeral arraingements."
[20:46] <Andria> Andrea looks satisfied with that, but looks towards Josa. It's his business, if he wants to try for more...well, that's on him to keep trying.
[20:48] <Aaeru> "So. Charity and orphans? What about it?"
[20:48] <Kotono> Josa seems to consider for a time, "Very well, I can accept that." At last he says that, offering his hand out to the captain. The two shake, Josa turning to the party. "Now then, let us depart!" He says, "We'll talk once we've at last returned."
[20:49] <Janson> "Hope the old shop hasn't burnt down or anything," Janson chuckles weakly as he sets off, just wanting to put all this behind him.
[20:51] <Andria> Andrea groans. "Don't jinx it, Janson."
[20:51] <Kotono> The party hurries along back to Whimiscal Sweets! It looks intact on the outside, Josa taking out a key and unlocking it! He steps in, sighing as all looks as it should be. "Ah." He inhales and exhales, "I daresay it is good to be home! WE will need to discuss things, but at this juncture I desire nothing but rest." A look to the others, "But in the future, let us NOT discuss treasure with
[20:51] <Kotono> others, lest we lose our hard won bounties?"
[20:52] <Aaeru> "If it's not legal to sell them, then we shouldn't."
[20:52] <Wayland> "Are they actually illegal?"
[20:52] * Aaeru just stares at Wayland.
[20:52] <Andria> Andrea nods her agreement with Aaeru. "If they're something that should be destroyed, there's surely a good reason for it."
[20:52] <Wayland> "What?"
[20:53] <Janson> "Agreed," Janson nods with Josa. "We can just sell them somewhere where it is legal if it comes to that."
[20:53] <Aaeru> "We asked the Guard. That Captain said it wasn't legal."
[20:53] * Aaeru rubs her forehead. "I'm sorry. It's not agreed. I can't do that!"
[20:54] <Andria> "Besides, we want to keep good relations with the Crimson Guard, don't we? Why risk making things get worse just for a few extra gold?" Andrea complains.
[20:54] <Wayland> "Well, he didn't. He said it was evil, not illegal, didn't he?"
[20:55] <Aaeru> "If you think I didn't get it right you can always go ask again. I can come with you?"
[20:55] <Wayland> "That's quite alright. If I have quibbles with the locals, I can handle that myself I think.
[20:55] <Wayland> "
[20:55] <Janson> "It's a sword, not a person. It can't make moral judgements or actions - how can you say that," he points at the infernal blade, "Is more evil than that?" he points at Andrea's phoenix feather.
[20:56] <Kotono> "To be fair," Sylvie clears her throat, "It's quite possible for an object to be evil. Evil can be a tangible force - we WERE just to Hell, too."
[20:56] <Aaeru> "I'm not saying that," Aaeru says, shaking her head. "I only said that something the city doesn't allow shouldn't be sold or hidden."
[20:56] <Andria> "If it radiates evil? Yes, yes it is. Evil artifacts can and do influence people," Andrea replies.
[20:57] <Kotono> Simmer shrugs to all of this, heading upstairs and stretching.
[20:57] <Kotono> "The sword also hurts demons more tha nanything else," Sylvie goes on, "Aren't demons evil too?"
[20:57] <Aaeru> "It's-- think about it!" Aaeru exclaims suddenly, unable to quite keep calm anymore. "If you caught a person and made them a slave, and it's not legal to own slaves here, would you just say you can sell that person some place where it is and that makes it all okay?"
[20:59] <Kotono> "A sword is also not sentient." Josa rubs his forehead more, "We are talking of a fungible good, not a person."
[20:59] <Janson> "Well maybe if the law here said slaves have to be killed rather than sold? You can hardly compare the situations," Janson retorts. "It's a sword, a dumb piece of metal that kills people when you stick it into them! There are millions just like it, so why can we sell those but not this? Just because someone says so isn't a reason."
[20:59] * Wayland nods along with Janson.
[21:00] <Aaeru> "Because this city has good and just laws. If you break one, you need to have a really good reason! Wanting money is not a good reason!"
[21:01] <Janson> "Firstly - yes it is," Janson nods quickly, "Secondly, you can't just say 'the laws are good and just' without backing it up. The law against murder? Fine, that's good, that's just. This law? Stupid and arbitrary."
[21:01] <Kotono> "Hey Aaeru," Sylvie speaks up, "What got us to Hell to save them? Money. What paid for thos healing nectars we needed? Money. I completely respect you don't need money, but the rest of us do. There are important things out there, like books, potions and scrolls."
[21:01] <Aaeru> "And we didn't need to sell illegal swords to make that money," Aaeru counters. "If you want to start, I can't be part of it."
[21:02] <Wayland> "Food, shelter..." Wayland ticks off on his fingers.
[21:03] <Andria> "I agree that money is important, but not enough to justify selling an evil artifact! Just because you don't think it can influence someone or have a sentience or whatever doesn't change the fact that it radiates something foul and at least Aaeru and I can and do sense such things. It's not -right- to let such things remain," Andrea argues.
[21:04] * Aaeru pauses suddenly, staring at Janson. "You're right," she finally says. "I can't just say that. Let's go to the Crimson Guard and ask why that law exists."
[21:05] * Janson takes a deep breath. "Okay. How about this then? If we ever find evil swords like that, we get them fairly appraised, and count them as part of our profits from the action that got us them. Then we get them destroyed - lawfully - and take the appraised value out of the share of the people that think following this law is more important than money?" He narrows his eyes a moment. "And
[21:05] * Janson fine, if the guard gives a good enough explanation, I'll count myself in that category as well."
[21:06] <Aaeru> "After hearing their reason, I'll answer you," Aaeru promises Janson. "Let's go now? Who else wants to come?"
[21:07] <Kotono> "Indeed, all of those are important," Josa says, before raising his hands, "At this point I may as well."
[21:07] <Wayland> "I'm game." Wayland nods. "Let's see this settled so that we can move on."
[21:08] <Kotono> Throughout all this Silver has been silent, fluttering over to acase and lying down. She peeks her head up, "Isn't this entire thing silly? It's just money, have Josa do something besides being fat to get more if something doesn't work out. Really."
[21:08] * Wayland very carefully restrains a bark of laughter.
[21:08] <Janson> "It's money that's being stolen from us!" Janson shoots back.
[21:09] <Aaeru> "It's important!" Aaeru protests. "We know some laws, and if they're just, we think all the laws in the city are just. If some law isn't, it's like that but in reverse! So I have to know."
[21:09] <Andria> "I'll pass. I don't wish to delay longer on passing the news to Olan. If you want to take money out of my salary/share to deal with things, go ahead," Andrea says with a frown.
[21:09] <Janson> "Nah, it doesn't matter this time - the guard jumped us before we knew what was going on," Janson tells Andrea, not wanting to apply any rule retroactively.
[21:09] <Kotono> "Alright then, let us go," Josa says, "Good luck with your grim news, Andrea."
