<El-Cideon> A nod from the other priest. "We will move on, and continue our search elsewhere. One of our appointed tasks was to determine the fate of Father Randolf and, if he persisted under the Duke's curse, to dispose of him." He gestures to a scorched patch of the stone floor. "It would seem this has been accomplished for us. Your work, perhaps? I commend and thank you, if so."
<El-Cideon> Hendrick and his bodyguard circle around the group, moving for the chapel door, Corona's roving eyes on guard for anything untoward. "Watch your 'ally' closely, Brother Crane," Hendrick warns, adding with a smile, "but not so closely that you became entranced by her. Walk in the light, my friend."
<Eliaphas> "You as well. Mistvalken's denizens are on the back foot for the moment, but can still prove dangerous," Eliaphas warns. Although without the ghosts or the captain of the guard or numerous monsters then it really is a lot safer than it was when he had to start out here.
<El-Cideon> Another nod, and the duo exits the chapel. The heavy door swings shut behind them with a muted boom. "I wonder if he smiles like that while interrogating heretics," Kisantha sniffs. "I suspect he does."
<Madeline> "It's good to enjoy your work!"
* Corben can't fault that!
<El-Cideon> "Well, I can't fault that idea in principle," the succubus agrees.
<Eliaphas> "Making the kingdom safer is a worthy goal, but the tasks involved are not always pleasant," is all Eliaphas will say more on the subject. "Now, let us find these catacombs and take what we came for."
<El-Cideon> Kisantha saunters over to the far corner of the chapel, where a trapdoor is set in the floor. "Down here," she says, bending over to lift it open. Below is the start of a stone staircase, wending down into darkness. "It was supposed to be the eternal resting place for the Duke's mortal progeny. It was never that, exactly, but there are occupants."
<Eliaphas> "What kind of occupants?" Eliaphas asks as he follows her, debating switching back to the ghost-slaying bolts.
<El-Cideon> "Since before I've been here, they've been in the habit of picking one comely creature from each raid and sending her to the tower to be Duchess. Whatever the Duke's looking for, no one quite seems to meet his exacting standards." Muttered addition: "Or more like he doesn't even notice they're there." Continuing in a normal tone: "Usually they go mad, some throw themselves off the tower...Randolf brought a few back to some shambling semblance of life from some deluded notion of building some religion of the undead. They didn't thank him for it. That's who we'll find down there."
<Madeline> "How many raids have happened since Mistvalken appeared?" murmurs Madeline. "We could expect nothing less than a horde."
<Eliaphas> "Close to once a decade for three hundred years... Thirty or so?" Eliaphas suggests, hefting his crossbow. "We should put them to rest if we can, but remember our time limit down there."
<El-Cideon> "Ten years is the average," Kisantha says. "So quite a succession of disappointing wives! But not all of them came back. Like everything else he did, Randolf's attempt was a miserable failure. They've just enough spark within their dusty skulls to carry revulsion for themselves, the living, and their master in equal measure."
<Madeline> "Will they be a serious threat?"
<El-Cideon> "Difficult to say. They don't associate with us upstairs. I know they've been up to something, scurrying around down in the tunnels, but they don't share their plans with me.
<El-Cideon> "I've only been down to visit them once," Kisantha says, "and that a very long time ago. I'd thought perhaps I might be able to bargain with them for some mutual advantage against the caretakers upstairs, but instead I was ordered most rudely to return to the surface. Well enough, there's little fun to be had with the undead at the best of times, and they've no love for the living down there." Kisantha sighs, runs a hand through her hair. "I must have been a bitter reminder of the mortal beauty they've all lost."
<Corben> "No doubt. Let's put them to rest."
* Eliaphas isn't sure whether she's being perceptive or arrogant with that statement, and decides not to comment. Instead he takes the lead down the staircase, ready to see for himself.
<El-Cideon> "Of course," she says brightly. "Lead the way!" Kisantha herself taps a ring on one hand and with a brief incantation causes it to shine with light. "There's no natural light or torches down there. You'll have only what illumination you bring with you."
* Eliaphas does something similar to make his bayonet shine like a torch leading the way.
<El-Cideon> The steps are of finely worked stone, and the descent is a spacious one. This was obviously once meant to be someone's noble exit into the afterlife, but now a layer of dust coats everything. Before long, the stairs bottom out in a long hall of white marble. On either side, niches are set into the walls, long enough for a human body to lie straight. No human remains are apparent, however. Set in the walls near the ceiling are trumpeted brass apertures similar to those set along the floor in the chapel. The hall proceeds south and the far end is lost in shadow.
<El-Cideon> "There were definitely bones on the shelves last time I was here..." Kisantha says uncertainly.
<Eliaphas> "They had to listen to Randolf the entire time?" Eliaphas looks at the trumpets with distaste. That's just adding insult to injury, he thinks as he advances down the hall.
<Madeline> "Lesser forms of undead aren't much..." notes Madeline, though she's nonetheless uncertain.
<El-Cideon> "Yes, well, I expect they retreated to some bolthole down below. Could you blame them? *I* wouldn't want to listen to that old fool prattle on all day long. I know they patrol the sewers these days, and they obviously haven't been using the stairs to get around..."
<El-Cideon> Shortly, the end of the hall comes into sight--just as Corben's helmet starts to glow a faint blue to signify the presence of undead, you see two human skeletons standing at attention against a wall, dressed in old chain and bearing swords. Despite smoking faintly from the warrior's undead-smiting helm, they take no immediate hostile action.
* Corben is the first to take that hostile action, charging down at the skeletons!
<El-Cideon> OOC: okay, then! Init.

<El-Cideon> And soon the skeleton is naught but a dry rattle bouncing across the floor in pieces! The empty crypt is silent and still again as soon as the echoes fade.
<El-Cideon> "Oh, my poor Eliaphas," Kisantha croons. "But so brave of him to take the lead!"
* Corben advances once the skeletons have been dealt with, wishing to see what they had been guarding.
* Eliaphas just shakes his head and heals himself somewhat before following Corben. "They must have done well out of raiding the armoury, or else there's a spellcaster down there who can make those weapons."

<El-Cideon> "Perhaps both," Kisantha says. "They've had much time to learn. Now...they wouldn't have been guarding the room if there weren't something here to guard." Kicking a skull out of her way, she prods around the end wall of the tomb.
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+25
* Hatbot --> "El-Cideon rolls 1d20+25 and gets 41."12 [1d20=16]
<El-Cideon> Ultimately kneeling down next to a heavy stone casket, Kisantha looks up at the others. "I feel air from below. Corben, put those muscles to use and shove this aside for us?"
* Corben would prefer to just break the casket, but he can certainly push it out of the way, first!
<El-Cideon> With a grinding of stone on stone, the coffin is soon shove out of the way to reveal a hole burrowed through the floor. Unlike the worked stone of the crypt, this tunnel looks hand dug through raw rock.
* Corben leans in for a closer look, relying on his helm for illumination.
* Eliaphas takes a moment to reload while Corben pushes the casket.
<Madeline> "Renovations, you'd call this?" asks Madeline, leaning over to peer down as well.
<El-Cideon> It goes down! At a slope manageable enough for a person to walk unaided. It'd be cramped, but you could walk it.
<El-Cideon> "Yeees," Kisantha says. "What dreary work this must have been. And all to dodge daily sermons!"
<Corben> "After hearing his sermons, I can understand this," Corben says, starting to head down the slope.
* Eliaphas nods as he follows Corben down.
<El-Cideon> Kisantha dutifully takes up the rear, obviously pleased to not be on meatshield duties for this little jaunt.
<El-Cideon> The tunnel slopes downward in a spiral. The walls are narrow, the roof low, such that elbows brush against stone on either side and Corben has to stoop to avoid knocking his head against the stone. After claustrophobic minutes of walking, the tunnel levels out and opens into a circular chamber sixty feet in diameter. The central twenty feet of this domed room is a great pit, the depth unknowable due to the mass proliferation of bones that occupy it. Whole graveyards could have been emptied out here. And immediately to either side of you are two more armed skeletons.
<El-Cideon> Across the pit, on a platform raised a step above the room, sit three ornate stone coffins. A figure stands by the central casket: once human, now bent, twisted, wrapped in funeral bandages, gray with age and rot. Similar figures stand by either side of the pit. The central cadaver, in makeshift bone armor, an ancient bandage wrapped 'round her head and shielding eyes from view, speaks. Withered lips pull back from blackened teeth, and in a dry whisper: "Brave to meet us here. I give you a moment. Speak if you wish."
<Corben> Brevity is best! "We're here to kill the Duke. We want the amulet that opens the way to him. Do you have it?"
<El-Cideon> "As well as," the dead figure says. "It is in a safe place."
<El-Cideon> Kisantha idly scans the room, giving the various figures an appraising glance.
<Madeline> "It is required for our mission. If you want to hand it over, we can leave without any trouble," replies Madeline, attempting (poorly) to conceal her unease.
<Corben> "Where is it?"
<Eliaphas> While he's not really keen on letting them... live? - he nonetheless continues to see the Duke's demise as paramount and is willing to allow some concession in that name.
<El-Cideon> "Where mortals fear to tread, but dead walk safely," she says. With a touch of amusement: "Worms want only warm bodies for their young. If you can retrieve what you desire, perhaps we concede you can do what you came for, let you leave the tunnels alive."
<El-Cideon> Kisantha beams to each of you in turn: "I don't believe she's being honest about everything...but she's layered in magical wards and they're ready for a fight."
<Eliaphas> "We've killed Father Randolf already," Eliaphas speaks up. "We'll take what we came for, but if you consider standing in our way you'll die again." He looks over the assembled figures for a moment, "If any of you desire that, I would send you before Norusk gladly."
<Corben> The only worms he recalls are the ones the crazed survivor outside the castle proper was talking about. "Where do we go?" he asks, not particularly eager to climb outside once more.
<El-Cideon> A dry, grave rattle of a laugh. "Name you invoke has no meaning here. No sun in Mistvalken, no light underground." She turns and points behind her, where a break in the rock wall leads out into darkness. "There. Sewer tunnels. Walk, take right at junction. Nest is not far past."
<Corben> Having heard all he needed to, Corben follows the directions. And if the undead are tricking them, that only means he would be fully in range to show his anger at the betrayal.
<Eliaphas> Disappointed, Eliaphas follows Corben.
<El-Cideon> The lead figure gestures to her comrades in unlife, and they shift over to the wall to allow passage.
<El-Cideon> The aperture in the far wall, you can see, leads out into a broad tunnel, though you'd need to walk through to get a better glimpse around.
<Madeline> Worms. Why do they have to go through the worms? Madeline represses another shudder and trails after the men.
<El-Cideon> Kisantha skirts around the pit, casting a speculative glance down, before following the rest of the group. None of the undead interfere in your passage.
<El-Cideon> After a short passage through bare rock, you emerge into a wide tunnel. Unlike the undead's cavern, this is professional engineering work, or was once--it's obviously not seen maintenance for an age and a half, stones covered with grit. A river of sludge twenty feet wide lazily drifts down the center of the tunnel; you find yourself on a walkway alongside this, wide enough for two to walk side by side.
* Corben uses the helm to cast Daylight upon his falcion, already burning merrily with magical fire. No worms would sneak up on him without being seen! Thus prepared, he continues leading the way.
* Eliaphas would hold his nose, but keeping his crossbow ready is more important than preserving his senses. Keeping close to the wall away from the sludge, he follows Corben down the tunnel.
<Madeline> Madeline's nose twitches as they emerge into the river of sludge. "This is disgusting," she mutters, unable to restrain giving voice to her innermost thoughts.
<El-Cideon> "It IS a sewer," Kisantha says. "You know, I feel certain we'll all be in need of a hot, relaxing, and above all thorough bath after this. Who's with me?" To your left the tunnel quickly deadends in plain sight--there is an opening in the ceiling there through which water trickles, feeding the slow flow of refuse. Travelling to the right--
<Eliaphas> "A bath would be pleasant, but I am not 'with you'," Eliaphas retorts.
<El-Cideon> "But *someone* must scrub my back!" Kisantha insists.
<El-Cideon> A short walk brings you to a four-way intersection. Rusted metal walkways allow passage to all sides here. A miasma that makes your skin tingle and twitch on contact suffuses the air here.

<Eliaphas> But earlier on the junction had a dead end to the left so wasn't a real junction! So he turns right here after all!
<El-Cideon> Everyone can hear a savage cry from the tunnel to the right. It's a thoroughly inhuman cry--it brings to mind planes of rusted metal scraping together. It's probably a hundred feet or so down the tunnel, you'd guess. As you walk, Corben and Madeline's sense of balance suddenly swims awry, but they quickly find their bearings again.
* Eliaphas picks up his pace after hearing that cry!
<Madeline> Madeline's eyes naturally turn towards the yell, and her bow is at the ready!
<Corben> "Witchcraft!" Corben snarls, holding onto his falcion tightly. He hardly gives up his spot at the lead, however!
<El-Cideon> It comes into view soon enough--a humanoid figure, composed of metal given to rot and corrosion. It screams a shriek of incoherent rage at the ceiling, beats on the wall with great metal fists, and soon turns to close in on the party once their light comes to its attention!

From behind the group, Kisantha merely scowls and whines. "Ohhh, I hate creatures like this, I can't do *anything* to them. I can only provide moral support, I'm afraid. Go, heroes! A chaste and inoffensive kiss to whoever brings it down!"
