A little spamfic (that is, short, hopefully amusing) little fic as I try and recover my stride.  Got really imbalanced recently, but feel a bit more on the upswing.

I hope this entertains. >_>;

Afterthoughts:

It's amazing how good Haruhi's parents are at giving the exact opposite impression to the one they intended xD (Haruhi approving such "hypothetical" course of action in the end is just the icing on the cake). One can guess how their approach would work out if it were any teenager other than Kyon ^_^;

If the goal is to amuse, then this little fic was a complete success IMHO.

Also, is there any hinting of how that dinner could go?

On the technical side:

"Well, her you mentioned," → "Well, you mentioned her,"

Hooray! :D

Unexpectedly well, I think, with Kyon and Haruhi both being a little weirded out by her parents.  I think Haruhi would be uncomfortable and think her parents would embarrass her, but Kyon would be his typical unflinching self.  He's seen worse from them, after all. >.>

Yeah, I could see
Spoiler: ShowHide
 Haruhi's parents unsubtly trying to point out all of Haruhi's strong points to Kyon, and likewise to Haruhi, making the entire thing hilariously awkward.

Kyon: "...so, dinner with my parents next time."
Haruhi: "And every time ever after. >_<"

It was technically correct, though I could put more emphasis on 'her' -- if anyone else trips over it, it's an easy adjustment to make.

Thanks for the feedback; I'm glad someone enjoyed it. :D

Heh. I rather like. Refreshingly slice-of-lifey, which can be a nice break from belligerently epic all the time.

As usual, my ability to C&C is low. Just thought I'd register my enjoyment.

ROFL.  This was in fact quite amusing.  I can all too easily picture Haruhi's parents to be as you've presented them.  Just as I can easily picture Kyon and Haruhi ending up an "official" couple as a matter of course, without either ever proclaiming such an intent, or acknowledging the "state of being" thereof.
While Haruhi's stance on "romance" has been clearly stated, she wouldn't come out and declare she was changing her mind, either.  It would simply become part of daily life, without being remarked upon by Haruhi as a change in prior policy.  What the rest of the Brigade might discuss with Kyon, or what he might say to her, in passing, is another matter. =)

There was a fanfiction series, called "Meet the Suzumiyas" (IIRC)  that also introduced her parents, along with Kyon's family moving away for work/career related reasons.  Which Haruhi is determined to find a solution to, can't have a Brigade member simply move away.  Even one as "lackluster" as Kyon. =P  The dynamic between Mr. Suzumiya and Kyon... heh.

Yeah, my hatred of "Meet the Suzumiyas" and utter loathing for JonBob008's trolling antics are pretty well documented:

My review's the one on the bottom.  For what it's worth, nothing brings my day down like being compared to that hack.  Personally, I really couldn't get past the fact that the author expected us to laugh about Haruhi's supposed father beating Kyon.  Schadenfreude isn't my thing, but I guess some people are totally cool with making Kyon suffer for comedy....

Edit: Well, I can be happy that being reminded about it showed that some fan had disconnected the reviews from the fic's page, so I fixed that while I was there.  Someone else took my YMMV entry out, too ... easily resolved.

Eh, don't let it ruin your day. Mostly, I'd just say it's bound to be brought up because Meet the Suzumiyas is the first (I think) and one of the most popular fics where her parents are front and center and of the weird variety.

Brian

Yeah, I guess it's just not possible to reference Haruhi's parents without that being brought up. :\

Although it's sort of an echo of alethiophile's comment I have to say that this was refreshing because it was a down to earth story. It's nice to have those to contrast the universe's more dramatic tales.

Spoiler: ShowHide
I really enjoyed Kyon's attempts to disregard the fact that him and Haruhi are both dressed up with nowhere to go, so to speak. It's also assuming to see just how much Kyon really is desensitized to strange situations. I guess if it had been a real kidnapping though that there's a 50/50 chance that they'd end up leaving him on the side of the road somewhere after getting tired of his snark.

The way Haruhi's parents are handling this also makes me wonder just what she's actually been telling them. Could it be possible that she's actually dropped the D word with them, or have they simply inferred it from how much she talks about the boy with the strange nickname.

In the broader strokes I admire how even for what you deem as a spamfic that you've managed to distill one of your key outlooks regarding Haruhi fiction. You once told me something that amounted to the thought that too many fics get caught up in the idea of Haruhi only as her power, while ignoring that she's also a human being. They use her as something to move along or catalyze the plot, or as a deus ex machina. This may sound overly dramatic, but I think that your writing probably best captures the idea that Haruhi is a normal -- if eccentric -- girl that just happens to have extraordinary powers. It's something that is woefully underrepresented, but you've done it justice here.

Brian

Wah, that's high praise!  I'm flattered.  :p

But thanks, Grahf, that is generally my viewpoint of how Haruhi really is, so it's kind of ... actually entirely by habit that I managed to portray her as such.  So, yay for getting that across~!  ^_^;;
