79: A maid's power is mighty

[12:33] <@Ebiris> The trip around the lake to Than's shack is a difficult one, having to skirt well clear of the lake to avoid being seen by any nefarious alchemists or other surprises left in the South, but between Liamae and Alred a path is made, that eventually after three nights finds them walking through the windswept pass around early afternoon, the vacant dwelling appearing in its little nook much as it was left, the door still hanging open...
[12:36] <@Henrietta> "What about returning to town," Henrietta suggests, "and saying that we came across the dragon and were forced to retreat and recover? Sir Alred could wait here, in the meantime."
[12:37] <@Ebiris> Said elderly werewolf listens attentively to the planning but volunteers nothing.
[12:40] <Rudy> "I suppose we'll leave the body here?" suggests Rudy, after a moment. "Will we break the news when we arrive, or just see what's going on for now?"
[12:41] <Lucie> "I guess we can check things out first, make sure 'Miss Lehugh' hasn't stirred up trouble while we were away, try to pry Lady Esmerelle away from her to talk things over if all's well?" Lucie says.
[12:42] <@Henrietta> "We should see what happened with the prisoners we left behind," Henrietta responds, "as well as find out whether there have been any changes. Then, we could try to seize an opportunity and follow Lucie's suggestion, yes."
[12:42] <@Ebiris> "Prying her away might be hard," Liamae comments, "She's been invested in this bloodline for centuries and Lady VanGaunt is the sole last member."
[12:42] <@Henrietta> "In that case, how about trying to bring both of them over here?"
[12:42] <Lucie> "How do you plan to do that?" Lucie asks. "I don't get the impression they leave town much."
[12:46] <@Henrietta> "Bring up a sighting of a demon wolf, perhaps?" Henrietta proposes. "With my magic, I could take Lady VanGaunt into the skies and keep her perfectly safe, and she might be willing to pursue such a lead along with us."
[12:46] <Rudy> "We could try just telling the truth?" suggests Rudy, idly.
[12:47] <@Henrietta> "Would you believe a truth like that without any proof?"
[12:47] <@Ebiris> "Safe for how long?" Liamae asks Henrietta, "You remember when we tried getting over the forest that way?"
[12:48] <Lucie> "Well, our proof is Sir Alred here, right? Seems to me the trick is getting her away to listen to him."
[12:48] <@Henrietta> "W-Well, it's a different matter when you use it to run away!"
[12:49] <Rudy> "It is just a matter of entertaining the notion long enough to hear us out," replies Rudy. "Unless we want to try and goad the maid into outing herself, somehow?"
[12:50] <Lucie> "Don't see how we can do that," Lucie says. "She's been at this for decades, right? She's not just going to slip up all of a sudden."
[12:50] <@Henrietta> "I was thinking that she might, when confronted with Sir Alred, here," Henrietta admits to Rudy. "And then it only becomes a matter of getting Lady VanGaunt away to prevent any harm coming to her. I am confident of being able to do that here, but it is a different matter back in town, when there is a shapeshifter around."
[12:51] <Lucie> "I dunno," Lucie says. "What if we bring Lady Esmerelle out here, but the Mistress guesses what's what and bolts? It's not like we ever asked either of them to tag along with us before. She might be suspicious."
[12:52] <@Henrietta> "Her running away is not the worst option, if we can keep everyone safe," Henrietta points out. "Rather, her going on a rampage back at the manor is the worst possible outcome."
[12:54] <Lucie> "Rather not have her start all this somewhere else," Lucie says. "And as long as all of us are there, I think we can keep her pinned down."
[12:54] <Rudy> "Well, at least it'd be over quick like that," points out Rudy, before he turns to the werewolf. "Suppose she did run away. Could you follow her?" he wonders. "Take her down yourself, maybe?"
[12:55] <Lucie> "That's not a bad idea," Lucie agrees. "Wait in the woods outside the house in case she makes a break for it, close by to talk to Ladey Esmerelle when we need it?"
[12:55] <@Ebiris> Alred barks a laugh, the first thing he's said since stopping here. "Boy, I'm a decrepit werewolf, my claws blunt and my teeth loose. The Mistress, though? Where do you think the stories of the Demon Wolf came from?"
[13:00] <Rudy> "Alright, forget that. Let's just try and get her to the shack," states Rudy, after a moment. "We'll just have to improvise." He glances at Alred. "Let's shut the door. It'll be better if you speak to her without her seeing you straight off, too," he adds. "She sees a werewolf, she might just bolt without a chance to talk, no matter what we say beforehand."
[13:01] <@Ebiris> "Very well, I will wait," the silver wolf nods, going to sit on Than's bed.
[13:02] <@Henrietta> "I can ask Lady VanGaunt to accompany me once more," Henrietta suggests. "To look something else at the library, perhaps. As long as you manage to keep the Mistress occupied by dealing with the prisoners, it might be enough?"
[13:04] <Lucie> "First thing we need to make sure of is that they're still locked up and haven't caused any trouble, then," Lucie says.
[13:04] <Rudy> "Yes, I think we might just go ask her for lunch," replies Rudy, rubbing his nose. "I don't really want them to all be in a room together and then twig on. And Lucie's right." He shakes his head, and leaves over to toss a cloak over Myra. "Let's get going?"
[13:04] <Lucie> "Let's."
[13:04] * @Henrietta nods her own assent.
[13:07] <@Ebiris> Thus the group sets off, and a bit over an hour later they reach Lessmus, the village about the same as it was left, people looking relieved and happy to see the foursome return, a few stopping to ask after people's health and thank them for their hard work in protecting the village. But up ahead on the hill lies their true goal, VanGaunt manor...
[13:07] * @Henrietta is all too happy to return the greetings, even though she still feels a bit under the weather.
[13:08] * Lucie returns perfunctory greetings (probably the woman with the antler hat isn't the one they're real happy to see anyway) and proceeds straight to the manor.
[13:09] <Rudy> "And would you know if the lady has fared well, lately?" asks Rudy, of one of the commoners as he passes by.
[13:11] <@Ebiris> "Oh, yes," the familiar figure of Teo nods to Rudy, "She was down two days ago for a walk around town, thanked me for the fish I'd given up to her," he smiles happily at the memory.
[13:13] <Rudy> "Good on you!" replies Rudy, before continuing.
[13:18] <@Ebiris> Thus the group heads on up into the manor, finding the redoubtable Thess LeHugh right there in the entrance hall waiting for them! Or mopping the floor and humming to herself. But either way, that stops as soon as she sees who's come back for dinner! "Well," she draws herself up, looking down on the group as only an older lady who's seen it all before can, "Come back from gallivanting around the countryside to regale us with more tales of your heroics? And I suppose you'll be wanting fed, too," she looks critically at Rudy, "You're all skin and bones, boy, I suppose I'd better make something hearty. What do you eat out there, anyway?"
[13:20] <Rudy> "Haha, we did more running away this time," replies Rudy, rubbing his head. "Ah, jerky, bread, and lemons," he adds. "Nuts, too. Nuts are the greatest. I can live for one week off fifty grams of nuts."
[13:20] <@Henrietta> "I always bring rations with me!" Henrietta asserts.
[13:23] <@Ebiris> "Eat some of her rations, next time," the maid tells Rudy, "They're obviously more filling. I'll have dinner brought up to your suite presently."
[13:25] <@Henrietta> "Ah, speaking of not having enough food, did that happen to, well, loosen up that woman's lips?" Henrietta asks.
[13:26] <Lucie> "Yeah, that lot didn't cause any trouble, did they?" Lucie echoes, watching the woman's reaction very closely.
[13:27] <@Ebiris> That makes Thess stop, folding her arms over her apron. "It loosened something. She somehow got free and enspelled Darnel. Killed the other two prisoners and skipped out into the night."

[13:31] <@Ebiris> "Darnel. She put him to sleep with a spell, he says. I found them in the morning, they'd been bitten to death," Thess elaborates.
[13:32] <Rudy> "Bitten?" asks Rudy, in surprise.
[13:32] <Lucie> "*Bitten* to death?" Lucie presses. "By what?"
[13:33] <@Ebiris> "Lots of small animals with sharp teeth. Probably poisonous considering how they looked," the maid continues matter of factly.
[13:38] * @Henrietta sighs. "Leaving those people here was a mistake. I will do my best to learn from it. But is it not time that you stopped lying, Miss LeHugh? We talked to Joel and Grigor. We know about you. Do you not feel any shame about executing your own people, whose only crime was losing a fight against us?"
[13:40] <@Ebiris> "My people?" she plants her mop firmly on the spotless floor and raises an eyebrow. "What in the world are you talking about, girl?"

[13:45] <Rudy> Have we? Have they? Rudy doesn't know! "We have heard evidence from others, as we've said," he replies, contritely. "I will escort you to the cell. Of course, nothing else will happen to you until m'lady has heard what we have to say."
[13:45] <@Henrietta> "Yes! We are not vigilantes, after all!"
[13:46] <@Ebiris> The middle-aged maid doesn't look at all inclined to submit herself, not moving from where she is!
[13:48] <@Henrietta> "We were tasked by your employer and liege to get to the bottom of the disappearances plaguing Lessmus," Henrietta points out. "Will you defy her now, or follow Rudy into a cell to await the Lady's judgement?"
[13:49] <Lucie> "Walk or be dragged, it's up to you," Lucie says. "Wouldn't recommend giving us any trouble though 'Mistress.' I trust a woman of your years can count well enough to tell five's more than one."
[13:50] <@Ebiris> "Keep back, you lunatics!" she insists, brandishing her mop at Henrietta and Lucie as she backs towards the stairs. "I've no idea what you're talking about, but I want no part of it!"

[14:24] <@Ebiris> Racing ahead, the pair bypass a startled Liamae and charge into the open study ahead of them, finding the outer wall crumbling and the windows shattered, a fifteen feet drop below into the garden and past that an enormous black wolf races away clutching lady VanGaunt in its massive jaws! Liamae quickly gets over her shock and runs after the pair, gaping out the window before she forces her way between Rudy and Myra to hurl a set of magic missiles at the wolf's behind!

Dame VanGaunt stares herself in awe and revulsion. "I-it was her? All this time, it was her?" she mutters in a small voice, looking at the carnage.

[16:29] <@Henrietta> "Yes," Henrietta says grimly. "Sealing off the town, abducting people for her experiments, even the abduction of your brother, Dame VanGaunt. She was behind it all."
[16:30] <@Ebiris> "S-she was almost like a big sister... and such a good maid, too..." Esmerelle goes on, sounding utterly out of her depth. "How could she do such horrible things? How could she *be* something so horrible? The same monster that took my brother..." she trails off and her eyes harden, clambering up on shaky legs, she staggers over and spits on the corpse.
