<El-Cideon> Ione lands on the outer surface of one of the asylum's numerous globular extrusions. The main door is fashioned as a circle, and the medusa pushes it open against the protests of rusty hinges to allow view of the immediate interior:
<El-Cideon> The entryway of the asylum is dim in a way that contravenes the nature of the plane--under normal circumstances Air itself seems to generate light from nothingness, with no distinct source, but within the structure some oppressive force rejects the world's attempts at illumination. From outside, you can see only vaguely what lies before you: an open, domelike foyer with a reception desk for handling guests, some old chairs--all the furniture by now thoroughly decrepit and broken--and an open door immediately across from you leading into a black corridor.
<El-Cideon> The asylum was evidently built with the architectural possibilities of Air in mind; at a glance one could guess that flight was the principal and intended method of locomotion for the establishment's minders when it still functioned as a sanitarium. A quick peek inside shows two additional doors, perfectly circular, set into the middle of the walls to the left and the right.
<El-Cideon> The light from outside is not so dim that it cannot illuminate a small, rounded white shape resting on the wall by the door opposite the main entrance.
<El-Cideon> "Well I didn't promise it would be a very picturesque trip," Ione says preemptively.
<Steph> "It's okay, we were just in Arcadia recently and I'm sick to death of picturesque hills and meadows," replies Stephanie, with a snort. "Do any nasties hang out around here?"
<El-Cideon> "I can only repeat wild rumors of ghosts and such," Ione says. "I can say that there weren't any such things last time I was here--in fact it was my business then to remove every thing living from the premises--but that was many years ago."
<Steph> "Hmm. So, uh... let's just say we run into anything. How selective are you with the stone thing?"
* Julia goes to look at the white thing while she still has use of her eyes. She'll be closing them at the first sign of trouble!
<El-Cideon> "Unless by supreme coincidence none of you happen to be looking in my general direction at the time, I'm afraid you're quite at risk," she admits.
* Franceska simply takes out her wand of magic missiles, deciding to be prepared.
<Steph> Stephanie frowns, and then walks to go and peek through the open door into the black corridor.
<El-Cideon> Julia finds that it is a human head--or a remarkably good recreation of one. It has the consistency and faintly greasy sheen of wax. The face is locked in a scream.
<El-Cideon> Beyond, Stephanie can see rows of circular doors lining a corridor that arcs out of sight along the bend of the structure. For a moment, a split second, she could swear she glimpses someone--or someones, a group of men and women, somewhat translucent--rounding the bend to proceed further into the asylum, but before she can say anything the image is gone.
<El-Cideon> Rosemund sets down next to Julia. "What is that?" she asks, mildly aghast.
<Steph> "I swear there are ghosts this way," she mutters.
<Julia> "Have you ever been to one of those shows where they have copies of famous people made out of wax?" Julia asks with a fond smile of remembrance at her trips. They're not creepy at all! "I think it's like that. Just missing the rest of its body."
<El-Cideon> "That is, alas, our destination," Ione answers Stephanie. "We want the workshop beneath the late caretaker's quarters. Beyond the garden, we'll descend deep into the structure. These other doors here were just guard quarters."
<Franceska> "How delightful."
<El-Cideon> "What happened to the rest of it?" Rosemund wonders.
<Julia> "Maybe it's hidden somewhere else in the asylum?" Julia suggests, drifting off to follow Stephanie.
<Steph> Stephanie starts to head down the corridor. "Julia, teach me a spell to make ghosts go away," she suggests, drawing her weapons.
<Julia> "Just remember, what a ghost wants most of all is attention," Julia says calmly. "There's nothing you can do to a ghost that's worse than ignoring it."
<El-Cideon> The corridor leading deeper into the asylum is tubelike, and twenty feet in diameter. There's plenty of space for two to drift side by side if desired. The doors you pass lead into open cells, spherical oubliettes that might once have held Azure's most unfortunate but now just loom with quiet emptiness. Some bear writing on the walls--letters to forgotten loved ones in one case, one evidently total random association, another covered with an endless string of numbers. As you proceed inside the asylum, light becomes scarcer and Rosemund is obliged to light up her mace to show the way.
<El-Cideon> "This was the passive wing of the asylum," Ione points out. "She kept the more docile patients here. It looked more reputable that way in case anyone visited."

<El-Cideon> Stephanie hears it first--there are voices here, within the walls themselves. They cry and they moan, they weep and they pray. Stephanie can only pick up stray syllables and outbursts of raw emotion, but what is plain is that something is here, and it's all around you.
<Steph> "Oh, fuck this shit," mutters Stephanie, deciding to make earplugs out of cloth and stick them in her ears rather than listen to this sort of whining.
* Julia looks somewhat concerned by this behaviour. "Are you practicing for Pandemonium, dear?"
<Franceska> "The mind is the first thing to go," Franceska mutters derisively.
<El-Cideon> Yet as Stephanie dithers and delays, a presence manifests itself: shapes emerge from the floor and walls, seemingly born from the structure of the asylum itself. Man-shaped, but indistinct, the color and texture of tallow with blue striations that might be suggestive of arteries or just structural impurities. Some appear clothed, others simply displaying incomplete anatomy. They seem to flicker in and out of phase as you watch, one moment physical and the next an apparition. There are six of them altogether, and they have boxed the party in on all sides:
<El-Cideon> Further down the corridor are a winsome, feminine creature whose form mimics a dress billowing in a private breeze; and a man with grieving expression and the appearance of slowly melting before a fire.
<El-Cideon> Appearing in open cells to the left and to the right are a girlish form, painfully thin and ragged; and a graceful woman with an expression of contemplative serenity.
<El-Cideon> And finally, behind you, are a potbellied, slope-shouldered manlike form with doleful countenance and hempen rope for arms; and a robed figure with hands over its eyes, bent double, sobbing.
<El-Cideon> Gibbering softly to themselves and all unfortunate enough to hear in tones of wistfulness and pain, bitter remembrance and agonized reflection--but overall, in every case, of madness--the figures lurch forward and reach out for their guests.

"And these definitely were not here last time I visited!" Ione says defensively as the girl traveling through her own private wind tunnel lunges forward to punch at Stephanie with a playful giggle.

As he enters her proximity, she's assaulted with a low cacophony of babbling--things you should've done, things you should've said, if only you'd had the chance!--that eats at her senses. Meanwhile, rope arms focuses his gaze on Rosemund: "Don't struggle. It will be over soon."

<El-Cideon> "Oh...I think I have felt better than I feel right now," Rosemund pants, blinking in surprise at her own lack of strength as she suddenly has trouble holding up the weight of her armor.
<Steph> Stephanie goes to retrieve her nasty dagger, and makes a digusted noise before taking out her earplugs. "Are we good to go?"
<Franceska> "They're in the walls! Even now! Waiting!"
<Julia> "Hey, get back here!" Julia yells in outrage. "I was going to make you into minions!"
<El-Cideon> Rosemund digs in her pack for her wand of restoration--though, as she quickly finds, it's not sufficient to cure the strength drained from her. For that, she has to rely on her own, more powerful magics!
<Steph> "Well, maybe they'll come back and you'll get your chance?" says Stephanie, frowning. "Anyway, why worry? There's always more death where we're going."
<El-Cideon> "Ah, Julia, it got you too, did it not?" Rosemund notes, approaching to resolve Julia's drained condition with a touch of her hand as well.
<El-Cideon> "Is anyone else hurt?" she asks. "There could be monsters around every corner in this place!"
<Julia> "You only need one shadow and then you can have as many as you want..." Julia mutters morosely, tensing up in readiness for Rosemund's healing. It doesn't hurt her like a cure spell does, but any positive energy is unpleasant and often leads to an unsightly rash.
<Steph> "What, are they infectious?"
<Franceska> "In the worst way." Franceska shudders.
<El-Cideon> "There may be more," Ione guesses, helpfully perhaps, given Julia's mood.

<Julia> "Thank you Rosemund," she says, starting to top herself off with healthy negative energy. "I suppose we'll have to continue on... this was the passive ward, you said?"
<Steph> Stephanie frowns. "So they're ghost vampires, huh." Stephanie starts to head along down the corridor again.
<El-Cideon> "Yes," Ione confirms. "The violent patients--or those in whom she cultivated violence--were kept deeper within the asylum."
<Steph> "I'm never going to plead insanity," decides Stephanie.
<El-Cideon> As Stephanie proceeds along the corridor, more images flicker into existence before--yet this new contingent does not attack, and now stays in sight for all to see. Indeed, they do not appear cognizant of your presence, but merely go about their own business: sheathing weapons, mending hurts, and evidently recovering in the aftermath of some unwitnessed battle. They demonstrate the somewhat transparent character of ghosts, yet retain more of the vibrant color of life than the creatures you just fought--and they cannot be specters as several you know from personal experience yet live:
<El-Cideon> -Perhaps most personally familiar to the asylum's visitors, Marcus may draw the eye first. He's much younger here, not graying, not maimed, well armored and carrying a warhammer. Though much more imposing physically in this image than in recent life, his expression betrays a certain youthful uncertainty.
<El-Cideon> -Brijid is also here, albeit more lively in aspect here than she was when met in person. Her eyes in this encounter dance with a vigor and humor nowhere evident at your last meeting. She wears the lightest possible armor and is not obviously armed. A harp is slung over her back.
<El-Cideon> -Standing next to Brijid is a human in plate armor, a heavy mace in his hand. A solid jar of a man with blond hair shaved short, recruit style, the deep blue of his eyes hints at relation to Brijid but in no way does he carry himself with the same grace.
<El-Cideon> -A grizzled human man in well-worn leathers, a touch of gray taking hold in a mane of chestnut curls and a bow in hand, stands with a gray wolf of imposing dimension loitering by his side.
<El-Cideon> -An elven man with long, silvery hair, whose arcane robes cannot entirely obscure a build slender even for his race, almost to the point of gauntness. He indeed wears a hungry expression but not, one should think, for food.
<El-Cideon> -A tall woman in heavy armor, white-gold hair braided to her lower back, pale northern complexion, rather long in the face but with an open, guileless look to her. She bears an amulet instantly recognizable to the party, as Stephanie herself presently wears it.
<El-Cideon> -And of course, Galina herself--much younger, less weathered, but just as resolute in her purpose. Her arms and armor are identical to those seen on Arcadia, yet in this rendition the sunburst devices are fresher and retain their color.
<El-Cideon> Ione inhales a sharp breath and then, quite boldly, floats forward to wave a hand through the elven apparition's head. It does not react in any way.
<Steph> "Hey! These guys aren't dead!" protests Stephanie. "This is bullshit!"
<Franceska> "How about this? Was this here before?"
<Julia> "Well these definitely aren't ghosts. And you say none of these apparitions have appeared before, Ione?" Julia asks.
<El-Cideon> She shakes her head. "The asylum was quite, ah, subdued when I was here so many years ago," she confirms. "The violence was fresh, then. I suppose something has festered here in the interim."
<El-Cideon> They talk as well, quite without acknowledgement of the party's standing before them having their own conversation:
<El-Cideon> "They--they attacked us," Marcus is saying with eyes still wide from the shock of battle. "We came here to help them and they attacked us. Is this what you had to deal with all the time during the war?"
<El-Cideon> "War's not over yet, chum," Phibous chirps.
<El-Cideon> "Not this specifically," Galina answers with a sigh, observing, "but when dealing with demons or their thralls, one should not set expectations extending beyond prodigious awfulness."
<El-Cideon> "So you must all be used to scenes like this," Marcus concludes. "I'm sorry to slow you all down, then."
<El-Cideon> "I should worry the day we ever become accustomed to this," Jill says with an encouraging if somewhat worried smile for the group's younger companion. "We should steel ourselves against this wickedness, but not such that we become immured to it."
<El-Cideon> "That proper sense of horror you might be feeling only means you've still got your conscience," William adds in gruffly.
<El-Cideon> "I expected guards," Galina admits. "Men mortgaging their virtue for a handful of gold, or perhaps demons. I did not expect this, although I suppose I should have. Victoria did have a talent for convincing better men to waste themselves dying in her defense."
<El-Cideon> "So what do we do?" Marcus asks, uneasily.
<El-Cideon> "We press on," Galina states in a tone that should dispel all consideration of alternatives.
<El-Cideon> "I'm in no way happy about killing these people myself," Jill announces with an eye towards assuaging Marcus's discomfort.
<El-Cideon> "Might be a mercy for some of them," Phibous mutters, casting a dim eye over the floor, studying some human ruin long since gone to dust.
<El-Cideon> "Nor should you be," Galina agrees with Jill, quite ignoring the elf.
<El-Cideon> "So what plan do we have to avoid this raid descending into rote butchery?" Jill asks.
<El-Cideon> "The enemy knows the ground, we do not, and we are outnumbered. Few plans survive contact with madness," Galina sighs. "I understand misgivings. I have little regard for a man who kills merely because he is ordered to do so, but these forsaken souls lack even the faculties to know what we are about."
<El-Cideon> "I would spare the inmates if it's within our power," Jill insists.
<El-Cideon> "So would I," Galina says. "Spare who you can--but not at such risk that you endanger yourselves in the effort. If their madness seems a mild enough sort to talk through, do so. By all means incapacitate or wound whenever possible. I would wish to save whomever may be saved, and see those yet with some tether on reality returned to someone capable of tending to afflictions of the mind. But our victory is paramount. Victoria's death spares far more souls in the future than our fall brought about by hesitancy would today."
<El-Cideon> "Just so long as we're clear," Jill answers, "it's our mercy that distinguishes us."
<El-Cideon> "I'd hardly forget," Galina concludes. "I only ask you to remember our mission, that cause which brought us all so far from home. I wouldn't suggest we ever be so driven that we overlook opportunity for individual salvation, but consider what course of action serves the broadest possible good. A warrior should always be prepared to sacrifice--yet not be eager. One day's pain, though overwhelming in the moment, may serve as foundation for the wisdom and prosperity of tomorrow--so long as we persevere to see it."
<El-Cideon> They turn as if to move on down the corridor, and flicker out of sight.
<Steph> "I think they talk about their issues too much for people on the job," says Stephanie, after a moment of silence.
<Julia> "Yes, we're much more professional," Julia agrees sagely.
<El-Cideon> "We do not talk things over at all," Rosemund confirms, perhaps without irony?
<Franceska> "Yes, it is in no way similar to us," Franceska likewise agrees, before asking Ione, "So who did they kill here, again?"
<Julia> "Victoria Crane. You remember that statue you were so fond of?" Julia tells Franceska. "Speaking of professional," she goes on to the group at large, "Do you think we should have a name? Something to encompass our shared power and purpose, that people can know instead of just 'those four women from Solata'?"
<El-Cideon> "Victoria Crane," Ione says. "I'm led to believe she was some noble from their nation back on the Prime, though I'd suggest the Prime has perhaps questionable standards for such if that was true. That was who they came here to kill, at least. It's no secret they had to fight their way through the patients Victoria turned against them as well, however."
<Franceska> "Oh, I remember about Victoria," Franceska says. "It's just that I was made to understand that the patients were all taken away. So some of them were killed, then?"
<El-Cideon> "Ah, I am not good with that sort of thing," Rosemund admits. "I will leave it all up to you, Julia!"
<Steph> "We don't need a name! If we have a name we're easier to target!"
<Julia> "But wouldn't it be nice to hear bards sing of our exploits? That'd be easier if they had a name to attach to us," Julia says wistfully.
<El-Cideon> Ione nods. "Difficult thing to stop an insane mage. I confess it made things somewhat easier for me that the most violent patients died assaulting this group of heroes."
<Steph> "The bards don't sing about heroic necromancers, dagger-wielding gutter-trash, or lawyers!"
<El-Cideon> "It is fine," Rosemund reassures Stephanie. "I know very well what you all have done!"
<Julia> "But they do sing about brave slave-freers and hero-rescuers!" Julia retorts.
<El-Cideon> Rosemund nods. "Yes, you see, focus on the deeds, not the misdeeds!"
<Franceska> "If at all possible, I would rather there were no songs which serve as records of myself killing people I don't like."
<El-Cideon> "What would you rather your song be about?" Ione queries.
<Steph> "Hero-rescuers are meant to enhance the heroes, not be remembered themselves. Besides, if everyone knows about us then everyone will know what we can do, right?" replies Stephanie, stuffily. "So bad guys will know how to handle us! Besides, we'd end up with some dumb name like 'The Liberating Lasses' or something..."
<Franceska> "The lamentation of my enemies."
<Julia> "Not if we made our own name up!" Julia insists. "Like... the Gutter Queens? How's that?"
<El-Cideon> "Perhaps you could provide me with a list latter?" she suggests with a smile.
<Franceska> "No."
<El-Cideon> Rosemund wrinkles her nose at this suggestion. "But, ah, we did not all come from a gutter...ah, not that there is anything wrong with that if someone did!"
<Steph> "Our reputations will go there if we take that name, though."
<Franceska> "I do, in fact, keep a list of those I crushed quite thoroughly," Franceska says, perking up and ignoring all thise talk about the gutter.
<Julia> "I think it sounds quite catchy and easy to remember," the necromancer says, trying to think of something else that might work.
<El-Cideon> "Something that suggests our collective virtue, but not too boastfully," Rosemund suggests, adding for Stephanie's appeals: "And without being TOO specific about what we have done?"
<Steph> Stephanie frowns. "Come to think of it, though, if we had a powerful reputation and some awesome name, I could make people pay just for the honor of doing business with me!" She sinks her fist into her palm. "Freedom Guard?"
<Julia> "Sounds too militaristic..." Julia says, shaking her head. "Keep Freedom but drop Guard."
<El-Cideon> Rosemund thumps her palm excitedly. "The Avenging Angels! Or the Freedom Angels! Or the Angels of Liberation!"
<Julia> "The Avengers!"
<Steph> "Femme Fatale a'la Freedom?"
<Franceska> "I never fail to regret leaving my home," Franceska confides to Ione sourly.
<El-Cideon> "Ah, there are so many good options," Rosemund enthuses. "We should put it to a vote when we are all relaxing back in town later."
<Julia> "Yes, give the ideas some time to percolate while we explore this awful asylum," Julia nods, getting back to business.
<El-Cideon> "Ah, well, I do apologize for the nature of this little diversion," Ione says, evidently not getting Franceska's meaning. "I thought they were only rumors, you understand."
<Steph> Stephanie nods to herself, and starts heading onwards. "We'll get them to make little figurines of us, then sell them as collectors items..."
<El-Cideon> The corridor bends along the curve of this wing of the asylum, and finally opens up at ground level in a grand atrium, some two hundred feet across. Here there is somewhat more light, a dusty skylight far above admitting illumination of a gray pallor into the room. This looks like it might once have been a pleasant garden, but the flower beds are long since barren and the only lingering trace of the room's once verdant nature is a single tree--though to call it simply a tree is approximately as accurate as calling an erinyes an angel. Fifteen feet tall, bark a greasy black, leafless and with branches a collection of unholy squiggles, it's as unsightly a plant as one could ever hope to not see. It rises from a pool of what looks remarkably like blood. Red torii gates flank the square pool on all sides.
<El-Cideon> Corridors branch off from the atrium across from you as well as to the left and the right. And, up near the roof, tiny orbs of light dance about seemingly with a will of their own.
<El-Cideon> "We want the left passage," Ione advises. "That will descend deeper into the asylum."

<Franceska> "Wonderful."
<Steph> "Oh, boy, I think somethin's coming," says Stephanie, readying herself.
<El-Cideon> "And I must confess," Ione adds, with suggestion of raised eyebrow despite that anatomy not being visible, "I don't think that tree looked half so unwholesome last time I was here."
<Julia> "I think we should smash a big rock into this place when we're done," Julia says, casting false life for a bit of extra protection.

<Franceska> "I think we paid admission," Franceska says dryly, following Rosemund closely.

<El-Cideon> The moment you set foot in the atrium, the asylum's inhabitants rise to assault you again. This time three of them emerge, one before your doorway and the others to either side: one's form seems to bubble and boil continuously as if experiencing difficulty maintaining its humanoid form; one is serious, stern, adorned with the ceremonial wig of a judge; and the last is a man seemingly rent all over with gashes and gaping wounds.
<El-Cideon> Something emerges from the crimson pool, a misty, wraithlike form with burning eyes, and then the tree itself begins to lift its roots ponderously, a vile warbling breathing out through perforations in its branches!
