I figured it was some sort of Slaad. If I could confirm that, that's what I'm looking for.

It probably is, but it could be something froggy and unrelated. A ribbit just isn't a lot to go off of.

As you slowly study the crystal, you glance up and see it. At the same time Jarem's moving, "Down!" he calls, shield out and rushing to your position. A stream of ghostly, gnawing piranhas are darting right towards you, dozens and dozens all coming at you.

Can I identify if this is actually dangerous or just some weird apparition thing?

Alyssa uses her Dimension Door ability to teleport herself and Jarem away and out of danger, to the other side of the crystal.

Teleporting next to this sort of distortion? Probably not wise. The magic immediately collapses, only a quick control by Alyssa stopping it from scrambling her and Jarem like eggs. Jarem meanwhile shoves you aside, taking the assault head on and...

OW. You dodge to the side by ghostly fish still gnaw against your shoulder and ribs, drawing blood. You can't see the frog-man, slaad or not, well from here. With the mists, you'd need to get closer, they're hiding him quite well.

You fly 10ft forward, 30ft away now. The mists do not clear, clinging to it instead. It doesn't seem to be going away. You could continue to get closer if you want or cast now.
