I'd allow it as just on the cusp for that sort of divination, but you'd have to deal with any defenses against divinations he has as well as being entitled to a Will save.

Hm. The issue with that is the spell failure. Is there a way to try and punch through those protections before the spell failure kicks in?

I honestly don't even know what spells would be relevant. I suppose I could coordinate spell the wish and just boost the CL? I'm not sure what would work here.

Alyssa checks over the columns and walls where the smoke made contact, looking for any residue, and tries to find where the smoke originated from, hoping in the center of the cloud, there might be something to scrape up and study.
