"There may even be other reasons to criticise," Alicia agrees. "Though if it was purely negative energy then the death of one shadow would bolster the others."

Down the dip and back up. Yet you hear them again - this time from the southern wall. Eight shadows this time, emerging from beneath you and to the south, grasping for you from multiple directions.

Ahead you can see the walls are iced over, hiding flames within, and a few passages to choose from. But you hardly have a chance to appreciate it as...

A single, overwhelming slash and it's over, the shadows obliterated to the last. The explosions wash over you as Syala whistles. "I still marvel at how fast you are when you strike like that. I've seen others with that and it still amazes me. I'm barely reaching for my weapon by the time you've finished it."

"I was humbled a bit by Glasya," Alicia admits as her sword drops back down into a loose 'at ease' position as she considers the available routes and what they smell of/what tremorsense hints at. "Speed determines victory. When I was a neophyte I'd often be content on the defensive, banking on my defences to ensure I could finish even if I didn't start. But magic and sword grow ever more deadly, beyond what most defences can keep up with."

There is a path to the further west that smells of plants and roses, of trees and grass.

There is a path to the south, the ice growing thicker there, magma bubbling beneath it. It smells of brimstone.

There is a path to the north. It smells of nothing in particular.

"Or lets you dispatch those meaningless and weak," Latha says, light illuminating all around you.
