The tunnel narrows as you come within long range sight of it. Space and reality twist three miles away down the burrow tunnel. Here a sunken pool of rich, dark blood boils as Ysgard itself contracts around it.

Rolling these ahead of time even if they can't see it yet, so they can react smoothly when/if they get info.

As near as you can tell, and this is speculation, Ysgard itself seems to be birthing and breathing life into that blood, as if a mother giving birth to a child.

"Something's spawning up ahead, blood gaining life from the plane itself," Alicia says as they move closer towards it, compressing space to speed their journey. "I'm not sure what the end result will be."

Anastasia

"Another child of Jormugandr?" Antenora asks. "I can think of nothing else."

"It could always be something special," Syala points out, "Or it could be the Guardian's work defying the rules."

"I always assumed Jormungandr laid eggs..." Alicia admits, now wondering if that was a foolish assumption.

Anastasia

"....I always thought the Jormugandr was a male," Antenora admits thoughtfully.

"Why not both? Hermaphroditic creatures exist," Syala waves a hand, "But I don't think Jormugandr lays eggs. I suspect you're right from the lore I've read - we're about to see a Child of Jormungandr be born."

A slight nod from Antenora as you approach, "It might be so. It would take a special sort of fool to ask the Jormungandr such an invasive question, so let's find out ourselves."

In instants you are before the pool of blood - large enough to be a small lake in truth, deep as well. The blood boils as everything around it twists away.

"I tend to use it rather than he or she," Alicia admits. "Actually that raises a point I've been meaning to ask about," she allows herself to be sidetracked even as they reach the lake (do any further tunnels stretch on from here?) "We're told 'there must always be three'. The rule of three is carved deep into Creation, which was made by the work of three incarnations. Those incarnations themselves came from One. So why are there only men and women? Where did the Incarnations get the inspiration for that kind of duality?"

Anastasia

"I've studied a few species who have three genders," Syala points out, "Tryll's race has three genders. It's mostly an unneeded complication. I've even studied some races that have only one gender." Here your wife waves it off as you see the tunnel continues past the lake.  As you watch it, "Two seems like the magic number. Most hermaphroditic races run into problems doing too much, while three has too many spreading out reproduction. I'd say practicality wins the day here."

A beat before, "Whyever did you study that?" Antenora asks, plainly, a sidelong glance at her.

"I don't just get to know about the sparkly and cute parts of nature." Syala's retort lacks any sting to it, more amused. "Some fish and seahorses do things like that, and I furthered my studies to see how it went when intelligent creatures had a similar structure.

"And it's mostly a bad idea?" Antenora seconds.

A gentle ripple of divine will around you, Syala surrounding all of you in privacy.

"It can work," Syala turns her attention to the blood, kneeling close to the distortion but not touching it. "Theoretically, you could make the humanoid races single gendered - woman based for ease, since it's easier to add the male parts to them than the female parts to a man." A soft hum, "If you go in the other direction, you can get fancier, but it's more ways for it to go wrong, too. Women miscarry. The bloodlines of men and women both carry defects and disease. A third hand in it is a third chance for the worst of blood to come true, as well as the best. Too many chances for things to go wrong. I suppose the Incarnations could fix that, make it work, but there's a certain cold practicality to what they do. They don't make things to be fancy or interesting, they make them for results."

"But that's the thing, everything is the way it is because the Incarnations set it up," Alicia says. "The closest to the rule of three would be plants where an insect acts as the pollinator between two flowers, but that was a choice by the Incarnations just as much as men and women procreating together for humans and elves and dragons. If they ran into trouble using setups like Syala's talking about, couldn't they just fix the problems and make it work? For that matter, all of the incarnations are described as male." And left unsaid, the three fragments of the Incarnation of Law are male. "So where did they get the idea for women?"

Anastasia

"Why don't you ask?" Syala asks, "Because I don't know. He might."

"I will, later. Isn't this kind of thing interesting though?" Alicia asks, though she can tell when she's got the wrong audience. "In the meantime..." she studies the blood and the planar energies to see if she can get an idea for how close it is to fruition of whatever's happening.
