Yeah, he and his wife are fine.  Was a nurse at their facility who'd gotten sick, but being an elderly care place and having a nurse that went by everyone sick, they went on high alert.

Had a new employee get sniped with a much higher offer 2 days before their start date.  Negotiating but so-so on counteroffering/matching.  The offer they got originally was basically just exactly what they had asked for because it'd been easily in range.

Saying for the general thing: Yeah that's kind of an ass thing to do.  It happens.  At least dignify the offer you've already signed by discussing if they'll match.  I honestly get burning the bridge for a big payday.  It's not like it's stupid.  But you also already have some group that decided they'd be glad to have you.  They may not counteroffer and yes they might reasonably be pissed, but it's still at the end of the day, part of the negotiation.

Yeah, that just sucks. I don't blame the guy either, but I do think it's bad form if they've already accepted your offer. It's not about the money or the job, it's about keeping your word.

Still don't blame them in this economy, though. I get going for the cash.

My head is killing me this morning and I have meetings the whole day.

I have like 1.5 hours free in three 30 min chunks across the day, otherwise it's back to back meetings today.

And then tomorrow I have to drive across town again for an all-day meeting.

At the very least I'm primarily work from home, so they're just Teams meetings mostly, but I've been hit with a slew of drive down to office between last week (week-long safety hazard meeting) and this week (new project kick-off).

And the office is across town, so about 2.5-3 hours between drive there and back.
