We obviously don't want to use big companies copyrighted stuff, but surely we can find some fantasy art or adventure art that looks cool.

Here's a thought: Elfwood. If you see a cool picture there (they have a nice "Random Picture" function) email the artist and ask if they mind it going on a page banner? I've done that once or twice before, and people can be quite nice about it.

Though on a larger site, they might have more objection...
