Midnight Sun

At the rear of SRW: Divine Wars and Code Geass, we have Soukou no Strain, the third mecha series to pop up this season.

SnS ramps up the drama and angst right in the first episode. As Liddo-kun so eloquently put it:

[03:54:16] <Liddo-kun> <Soukou-Creator> "We're going to introduce four characters."  <Editor> "Oh?  What then?"  <Soukou-Creator> "I kill three of them."  <Editor> ....  <Soukou-Creator> *cackles*

Soukou no Strain involves the main character, Sara Werec, on a quest to rejoin her brother, a legendary Strain pilot, in space. For this reason she joins a military academy who have high expectations of her, as the Werec family is known for producing exceptional pilots. We see a little slice of life for the first half of the episode. We are introduced to Sara and her three close friends, and are given a glimpse of their relationship to one another.

Of course, that all crashes and burns with the second half, which I'd rather not spoil the fun of.

In any case, while the hand drawn animation is rather low budget, its doesn't strain the eyes that much. On the other hand, the CG mecha is excellent, far superior than what is being shown in SRW: Divine Wars. The plot is gripping and you truly feel for the main character Sara. And, like a certain other famous realtype mecha franchise, you never know who's going to die next, which ramps up the suspense.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest nabbing Shinsen-Sub's version and giving it a try.

Liddo-kun

I'm straddling the line of whether to watch this series, personally.  The main character's overt brotherly infatuation that seems to indicate some repressed desire on her part to do the pelvic fusion dance and spawn his loin brood is rather... disturbing.

I'll admit the mecha design is rather spiffy, though it's not of a ZOMG level.

I may give episode 2 a look-see before deciding whether or not to ninja-pirate kick Midi in the head or not.
Liddo-kun: Bjorn is the rain gutter in which all the dirty thoughts of humanity flow into?
Bjorn: I prefer, instead, to think of myself as the crap that blocks the rain gutters, causing the dirty thoughts of humanity to back up, fill the streets, and flood your basements.

An interesting little write up on the main protagonist of Soukou no Strain. Be sure that you've at least seen up to episode 5 since it does contain spoilers.

After seeing episode 10 raw I can safely say that humanity, in this series, sucks. They suck big time. In fact if I was in Ralph Werec's shoes I'd be hard pressed not to want to follow in his footsteps. I wouldn't do it but it would be damned tempting.

Anyways great episode with lots of revelations.
