I was dreaming.

My city- my world lay broken before me. In the sky,  the evils of the world spilled forth, wave after wave of all consuming darkness.

From that far off vantage I could see everything. 

Giants made of shadows. The fall of man.

I saw the end of the world.

But-

In that twilight gloom, there shown a light.

Bearing a sword of unparalleled craftsmanship, she faced the surging tides of darkness without hesitation, without fear. Each swing of her mighty  blade split the heavens, pushed back the darkness-

-and she was losing.

"It's impossible. It's too much for her." The voice of a child said quietly, drawing my attention to the two being watching the battle with me. The first, a small, white animal was answered by the second, a tall man in priest's clothes.

"But she's made up her mind." No sooner were the words spoken than a giant slammed through her defenses, tossing the blue-clad woman through a skyscraper. She regained her feet, but not without damage.

No! It shouldn't end this way! But what could I do?

"This is the destiny of Man." The priest's deep voice echoed in my head. "Pain and destruction, only ending with the death of the world."

"But you can change destiny," the child-creature added. Its tiny form filled my vision.

"Unavoidable destruction, grief. . . you can reject them all. You hold that power." In the distance, the woman was overwhelmed. My heart lurched.

How? Could I really do something? Could I save her?

"Of course!" the child-creature enthused. "So contract with me and become a hero!"
