Title: Games People Want to Play
Post by: Carthrat on September 14, 2005, 10:10:16 PM
Drac's recent post made me think a little, so here we go.

What sort of games *do* you want to play in? Even if you don't have time right now, it's worth flinging up a few genres/types you enjoy here. If you *do* have time, say so!

I've stickied this thread so we can all continue to see. People new to the forums, especially- if you don't see an open game you'd be interested in, don't be shy, DEMAND things from us! We don't bite.

Anything cool that doesn't involve dice or rules or too heavy on traditional fantasy (like having dragons and paladins and orcs and stuff everywhere you turn or something) ^_^

omgz can u liek make a hihg school rp?

Kidding! I'm kidding. I would like to see a real life RP or something, and I second Kwok about the non-dice thing. I find it a little *cough*alot*cough* complicated and I don't want to refer to a rulebook in order to play properly.

Fantasy and sci-fi are just as well :D And how a murder mystery? That would be fun.

Run something?  I suspect you could get folks for an anime game pretty easy.  I'd do it, but I'm maxed with Wasteland and Summer of Gears.  =)

Yes!  Run something!  Someone!  Anyone!  @_@

My first attempt at GM has convinced me that it should be my last, so I'll just stick to playing.  Hopefully something diceless for all the reasons Stormy stated  ^_^

I'd be interested in trying a game again, now that term is over and suchlike.

Me running a game would be hilarious.

Hilariously bad.

I spend most of my GMing energy crafting witty and cunning storyline for my Call of Cthulhu campaign that I run locally. The rest of it is provided to other local GMs in assistance with their bits of mental blockage.

I do get bored with playing WoW, playing Oblivion, and studying all the time. IT'd be nice to interact with living humans a bit more than my immediate family and local best friends.

I could try running a spam/low obligation game if no one else can and there's interest. I'm just nearly at my peak as is, so it would have to be a forum game and I dunno how it would go.

Many years have passed since people posted here. No reason not to reuse this thread though. =p

Anyhow, Iddy has been poking for new game stuff and I guess I'm bored enough to give a second game a shot, since I'm mostly happy with current schedule for IH game, and don't want to have that meet more often than it currently does. (I like using extra time in between to ponder ideas and stuff)

I don't have any specific ideas of what I could run though, so poking for ideas/interest from people that want to play -something-.

Some random thoughts from my end:

- Diceless or system? I don't really care, but I admit I prefer playing with a system as I like having some structure to fall back on. The people that commented in the past have expressed interest in diceless though, although who knows if they still are interested. =p

- Playing with a system means I'd probably want to go for a schedule much like my IH game, aka once every other week with occassional extra session meeting in IRC. As mentioned, I like having extra time between sessions to see what needs adjustment and come up with ideas. Or just take a break, really.

- With a 'diceless' game, that to me would be more of a round robin story type deal, with me controlling setting, so I'd probably shoot for a forum game with that.

- I'd love to do something with an anime/manga setting, and have always poked for interest in regards to this before, although we've not had much luck outside of Dune's Sailor Moon games, and those are ooooold now. I'd really prefer to have a structure of a system to fall back on, although I admit I don't know what'd be good for these, outside of a prior experience with Tristat and Sailor Moon.

- I've recently started reading a book called Mekton Zeta, which is supposed to be good for anime/mecha games. It looks kinda interesting so far, though again, pretty new to it.

- I still have some of my notes of what I was considering with Spirit of the Century (see "Timely Tales" under Old Games 6) before game imploded due to player loss of interest, if people want to try something pulp action hero'ish.

- I'd prefer not to do fantasy game due to potential overlap with IH game. I'm somewhat open to messing around with this, if only because I'm so familiar with D&D 3.5 or wouldn't mind experimenting with Fantasy Craft, but still not my first pick.

- "Way too freaking rules heavy": I refuse to run with the HERO system. That system just gives me a headache, and I -like- math. Just...ew, no.

- Similarly, other systems I'd like to avoid: I don't have any real interest in Paranoia (don't have anything against it, just not what I want to run). I also didn't really like Unknown Armies that much.

- Systems I have a decent feel for and like, due to actually having played with before: D&D 3.5 (duh, it's not like 80% of games I've played are this or anything, right?), Tristat/BESM (pretty rules light and has a slant towards anime/manga gaming), Spirit of the Century (pulp action hero), All Flesh Must be Eaten (BRAINS!!!), 7th Sea (pirates!).

I'm interested in Merc's game. Anime/Mecha sounds awesome, and the Mekton Zeta system seems pretty good for it. As for universes, I'm not sure. We could go with something established, and take over the existing characters, or run something inside the universe of an existing series/campaign.

I've seen a couple Zeta mods for Macross/Robotech floating around already, though I haven't actually gone through them.. If we don't take over characters, I'd like to play something like a Spec Ops unit (small group and dirty ninja work), or a Mercenary group.

huh.  Mmm...  Wacky huh?

Scott Pilgrim-seque\Rock And Roll Save The Space traveling rock battle group?  Looked over systems though and didn't see anything as a system though that could really do that.

Bunnies and Burrows for something really odd? :P

Truthfully, most like keeping in 2nd or 3rd ed (I never get to manage the timing for one of those gestalt games :P) would be fun, but hey, wacky or heroic stuff is also fun.

One thing I should note, and that I should have noted in the first post: This probably won't be D&D.

In addition to my craze-filled post above I'm also open to:

Space Opera (I just want to blow a Death Star up.)
Mecha (Dude, I would kill to Pierce the Heavens)
Zombies (All Flesh Must Be Eaten, anyone?)
Military (So I saw Saving Private Ryan too many times. Sue me.)
Paranoia (I had a blast playing this)

Random thoughts:
~Something involving time travel could be fun. Maybe a la Quantam Leap?
~I could definitely do something pulp fictionish. Something along the lines of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
~I also wouldn't say no to a superhero/villain game!
~Something with political intrigue could be interesting

If you somehow take leave of your senses and run TriStat, feel free to poke me for advice. I've got that fucking system at least partially figured out, enough to make it at least vaguely work.

Well, I know I'm not going to be able to play since you run through 1-2 am for me, but some possible suggestions, avoiding similar stuff to d&d (so no fantasycraft/pathfinder/etc):
7th Sea - pirates/swashbuckling system. I enjoyed it when Drac ran it. Mostly uses d10s. Penuche is coded for rolling the exploding dice and such. So is Serith.
Spirit of the Century - Pulp era heroes system. I liked mucking around when Zeph tried to get me to run this, even if he and other players vanished on me. Uses fudge dice.
Mekton Zeta - Giant mecha combat system. I used this briefly for that Eva game I ran with Iddy/Zeph before our schedules went kablooie. Was interesting/different.
All Flesh Must Be Eaten - zombies are fun, just make sure people aren't breaking fourth wall trying to be survivors.
Tristat/BESM3 - I still have a strong soft spot for your sailor moon games. BESM is nice for anime-esque games in general.
Heavy Gear - It'd make Iddy happy? Or maybe incredibly sad if he can't make the time. I just remember he kept going on and on about this. It was a mecha/military scifi type system from what I recall.

I know, bad Iddy for posting in a probably dead threat, but still.

I'd like to see a F/SN-Tsukihime type game. Dunno how feasible that is, though.. For more 'normal' style stuff.. Another pirate game would be welcome, and I'm always in for military style games. Though, a good Warhammer game would be good, too. Fantasy or 40k.

I'm interested in playing some sort of DnD turn based shtick. I've had some experience with 4.0 rules etc. and some experience with maptools if needed. I miss playing it though, and require additional pylons.

I don't think there's any 4e games going on right now, though there are a few 3.5 games and a Pathfinder game right now.

I have no problem learning 3.5 rules. I was just saying i'm more experienced in 4.0. Anything's fair game for me.

What do you actually look to get out of RPing? Is it an all combat all the time thing, or are you into intrigue/horror/any particular genre? Character studies?
Title: Re: Games People Want to Play
Post by: Esuna on January 31, 2011, 03:14:19 AM
Honestly, I'm not really against any ideas right now. I've never done a character study before though I don't think (never heard the term before.) I've done combat and seperately been in some groups where we just explored stuff. Kinda like a mystery uhh... not like scooby doo, but a mystery hunting group. And I enjoyed both. Don't really get scared by much though, can't say I'm sure about horror genre though.

Mystery, combat (both complete fantasy genre) etc. I guess would be my favourite. Thought provoking things. Would also like to possibly do a WW2 kind of RP based story. Not sure if anyone else has the same idea, or if people still think it's too soon w/e. Wouldn't mind trying it out though. 1 am brain can't function. if I confused anything I'm sorreh. Best I can put together on half a mind.\

Read an earlier post, and I kinda got interested by the RL mystery thing too. Didn't consider not having some sort of fantastical essence to it. Revising post.

Well, can you play in a late Saturday night game? It's not Dungeons and Dragons, but it's a simple system focused on the roleplaying. I wouldn't mind a fourth if it's a new person, in the spirit of gaming, y'know?

I've been looking all over the internet for someone who could GM a Numenera game.

The game is brand new. Only been out a couple of months. I don't think there's a whole lot of distribution for the book yet. It's interesting, and it's a d20 system, so it'll be easy enough to learn and most of the games around here are d20 anyway.

In short, you could rustle up interest, but I'm not sure about rustling up a GM. GMs tend to like having history with a system before launching games, and like I said, it's pretty brand new.

As for what it is, it's a future setting, hunting for relics of the past and plane-walking type of deal, I believe. It's an interesting setting, and I pledged for the PC game, but as I don't have the books I can't go into much detail.

Sounds interesting. The trick is finding someone who's willing to DM it rather than play.

You can try rustling around here, see if anyone feels like taking the plunge into DMing. If that doesn't pan out, you could always DM it yourself. Getting players is far easier than DMs, but it's also DMing which is ton of work. (I'm running 3 games right now, I completely understand that.)

Sure thing.

Fair enough on the GM part. It's always tricky getting DMs to run things, let alone good ones. Hang in there and keep on trying.

It's just that I've been to multiple sites, and nothing's ever really given me what I wanted. Sure I got to see new stuff, but it's like you're eating all these fries when all you want is a nice, juicy, cheeseburger.
And now I'm hungry.

Nah, I get it. I felt the same way once upon a time, so I ended up DMing rather than hoping someone ran what I wanted. To run with the metaphor a little further, I ended up learning to cook myself.  It's a lot of work, but now I can have a cheeseburger whenever I want.

It's hard enough to get people running stuff when it's something they want to run, let alone an entirely new game!

You should totes run something to get people into it.

Title: Re: Games People Want to Play

Yeah, Vastwoods and Balmuria.

Both games aren't in a position to attract more players right now. Vastwoods is in its last arc and will conclude after that, and Balmuria's full at the current time. When Vastwood ends (1-3 months) and after a bit of downtime, I'll be starting a new game in its place. That would be the time to ask.

In the meanwhile, I'd recommend looking at Origin of Stars or FFd6: Tower of the Goddess. I don't know if either game is looking for a new player, but you could ask.

One website that does a lot of role playing and tabletop games is www.rpol.net .They tend to do exclusively forum threads but I was a member there for a while until I got too busy with other stuff to play.

The games are fast or slow depending on the players and gms. But they have a good system as far as it goes. It might be worthwhile to taka look there if you have the inclination

I'd probably pass on it this time around. While I still have interest, don't really have time to pick up a new game, and when I do, I'll probably rejoin the Balmuria game first.
