Well, we have a Game of the Day thread, and a Post of the Day thread, might as well have an Image of the Day thread too, right? So a thread for people to post the random neat drawings they find when they don't think it's worth making one full thread for just that one pic. I shall start us off with...

I was dreaming.
My city- my world lay broken before me. In the sky, the evils of the world spilled forth, wave after wave of all consuming darkness.
From that far off vantage I could see everything.
Giants made of shadows. The fall of man.
I saw the end of the world.
But-
In that twilight gloom, there shown a light.
Bearing a sword of unparalleled craftsmanship, she faced the surging tides of darkness without hesitation, without fear. Each swing of her mighty blade split the heavens, pushed back the darkness-
-and she was losing.
"It's impossible. It's too much for her." The voice of a child said quietly, drawing my attention to the two being watching the battle with me. The first, a small, white animal was answered by the second, a tall man in priest's clothes.
"But she's made up her mind." No sooner were the words spoken than a giant slammed through her defenses, tossing the blue-clad woman through a skyscraper. She regained her feet, but not without damage.
No! It shouldn't end this way! But what could I do?
"This is the destiny of Man." The priest's deep voice echoed in my head. "Pain and destruction, only ending with the death of the world."
"But you can change destiny," the child-creature added. Its tiny form filled my vision.
"Unavoidable destruction, grief. . . you can reject them all. You hold that power." In the distance, the woman was overwhelmed. My heart lurched.
How? Could I really do something? Could I save her?
"Of course!" the child-creature enthused. "So contract with me and become a hero!"
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFfffffffffffffuuuu--

Don't they proximity explode anyway?
That'd take both of 'em out!
Unless I'm remembering wrong, I thought blue spiny shells didn't explode until they either (a) hit the car in first place (b) hit an obstacle (and other vehicles didn't count as obstacles). So if that car wasn't in first place...
I've never seen a blue shell hit an obstacle. Thought it always hit the person who was in the lead at the time it was shot (and had a lot of splash damage).
I've seen it. Basically, what happens is that when you shoot it, the shell goes straight for a short distance (where it can hit walls and such), and then veers sharply towards either the lead person (if nearby) or towards the center of the road (if not). Basically, to get it to hit an obstacle, you have to pretty much aim away from the road (it does happens, especially if hit by that thunderbolt item just as you're firing).

Honestly, I don't really buy into what I said there. The entire MOM thing with him wasn't really a sexist thing, though it's easy to pretend otherwise. It's just stupidity all around and a commanding officer who is various shades of incompetent.

I think it's subtle, and unintentional, but legitimately there -- if it's only a side-effect of using an all-male cast to counterpoint Samus. Anyway, we're wandering enough that I'm suspecting we might want to split this out again if we keep chatting about it, but consider:
If the grizzled incompetent commander who unlocked power-ups was an old woman instead of an old man...?
It wouldn't have the sexist subtones, but it'd still come off as retarded and demeaning to the character. It also implies a knowledge of her entire set of equipment that really is eyebrow raising given the lack of such equipment in their own gear. It was really a terrible idea, especially when applied to defensive gear.

Hm.
Again, I seem to be overthinking what is obviously a fluff picture.
It's just the official 'Disappearance' calender. Um ... the Disappearance universe story is a separate (but legitimate, official) continuity, though I haven't read it lately. I think it goes to spring so far, though it's going strange places from what I've been hearing about it -- the manga is titled 'The Vanishment of Nagato Yuki' IIRC. I'll try and find a link for it later.
Long story short: There's no reference to the novel events in Disappearance, implications are that Kyon chose to stay and all the supernatural was wiped out (and everyone forgot him acting crazy, but not meeting up; they seem to have revised their memories slightly). Yuki is moe (and pretty much helpless without Ryouko), Tsuruya and Ryouko are rivals (kind of...), and Haruhi is still dating Koizumi.
And Kyon's role is, what?
...to be Kyon, still. He's Yuki's love interest.
Quote from: Brian on October 24, 2011, 11:17:20 PM

Quote from: Sinom Bre on October 24, 2011, 11:27:39 PM
I thought Yuki was forbidden from having love interests in that environment. Or was that Mikuru?
Refresher: the whole idea of Disappearance was that
Yuki became erratic and emotional due to having to endure centuries of being trapped in Endless Eight, and 'stole' Haruhi's powers to overwrite the universe with her improved version where Haruhi is an ordinary girl, Yuki is an ordinary bookworm (interpretations of how that works vary), Mikuru is an ordinary girl from the local time period, the aliens don't exist, the SOS Brigade was never gathered, and in general all of the weird stuff Haruhi originally summoned doesn't exist.
Since the people in the Disappearance version of reality (except Kyon) have no memory of the novel events, and no supernatural attributes, any standing orders they had in the novels no longer apply after Yuki's rewrite. Thus Disappearance Mikuru and Yuki are free to do whatever they want; that's almost the entire point of having the rewrite.
Originally Yuki wasn't ever "forbidden" from love interests, she was just designed not to have them, much as a microwave is designed not to have interests. It never occurred to anyone that she might become more human as time went on. Later, the extent to which she is 'forbidden' from acting emotionally is debatable - she's already broken her rules/design constraints and the IDSE would prefer just to delete her and send a different interface as a replacement, but they do not actually have that option. This makes Yuki somewhat of a rogue agent.

Misfire (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ComicallyMissingThePoint). :p
I love that trope! =)
It is short for one though kinda. Though I guess it could be a smaller lacrosse stick hidden by profile.
I've seen that kind of short, lacross-style racquet before, but I can't think where or what sport it was associated with. At first, I thought it was Jai Alai, but after looking it up, that uses a solid piece racquet of sorts.
I still think this is one of the most amusing things I've ever seen... with apologies to the late Steve Jobs, of course.

Well, there is something to be said for not overdoing things, so perhaps you're just more responsible with your drinking than some others. I've been hungover, but never as miserable as the media suggests I should be. Who's to say?

I couldn't find a link of it though, don't recall what it was called, sadly.
Wouldn't mind seeing that one or another one that I think was about a blind kid moving around a town, discovering what it 'looks like' based on touch/smell/hearing (the kid imagined a plane flying overhead like a giant flying whale iirc) again.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever seen a NGE/SM crossover that was worth a damn. I saw a fusion once that was halfway okay, but no crossovers.
It'd be quite the exotic mix. They're not exactly the most compatible setups. I mean, I suppose Usagi could take Shinji's role in a fusion route, and you could toss a couple senshi in as the other cast (Rei reprising her role as Asuka? Cast the entire thing in a meta-play space?)
But for pure crossover, giant horrific world ending angels are a bit past the level that the senshi deal with. They'd practically become irrelevant side cast in any crossover. Same as if you tossed them against most other Giant Robo backdrops. They're magical girl sentai, not giant robo.

I'd go further and point out they're killed a number of rampaging space god-things. Unless the ability to destroy a planet doesn't put you at that level (Sailor Chaos and its incarnations; Queen Metalia, The Wiseman, Nehellenia, Pharaoh 90; Sailors Saturn, Moon, Galaxia, Prince Endymion)
Plus what Jon said.
Don't forget whoever that space-elf was in the R movie. He basically had an asteroid, right?
I'm going by the manga. If we start using other sources we'll get into Dracula vs Sailor Moon territory, and there is no turning back from that!

I do! I fancy a pet cat far more than a pet dog. Not being a dog person to begin with, having had several bad experiences with dogs during my single-digit years (and no, I'm not into the triple-digit years, you cads), and finding dogs to be entirely too high-maintenance, I fear I shall always prefer the ethereal mystique of cats over the slobbering solidity of dogs. Meh. Mecha anime was not my gateway genre into the larger world of anime, even though I did watch Harmony Gold's Robotech show when it aired in the U.S.. The original Tenchi OAVs was my gateway series, followed quickly by the Ah, My Goddess! OAVs and then Ranma ½. The only other mecha series I liked was Full Metal Panic, which I'm not entirely sure qualifies as a mecha series in the same way that Voltron or Giant Robo, etc., does, as the mecha involved aren't so much characters there as part of the setting.
You're older than me? You're going to have to state your age to prove that. O_o Or did you mean to say "Then I cry when the implication that I am, in fact,

Unlikely. The witch hunts were largely over, apothecaries were a tiny fraction of the accused. She's also very wealthy, so a success in her profession and probably popular in the community. In the unlikely event that someone did accuse her, she clearly has enough money to afford to leave town until the hysteria blows over.

Have I mentioned how much the image rendering on this forum sucks? Try saving this pic off and looking at it in a decent image viewer, like CDisplay or something. It's a striking pic that this rendering almost completely ruins--the sharpness is dulled, light-dark contrast is compressed, and the color saturation is bleached.
Re-uploaded using a different service: postimage.org. Ironically, the forum resizes the pic slightly larger than before, although there is still a slight decrease in sharpness, but if you open the pic in a separate tab, as Jon suggested, both the resizing and the sharpness issues go away.

By "this forum" you mean "your browser"? The forum doesn't render the images, after all.
Though the forum background colors can affect the relative color balance you see; it's an optical illusion, nothing more. Try right-clicking on the image and choosing "open image in new tab" (and if you don't have that option, get a better browser).

Missed that earlier, but this is almost certainly an issue with your browser (probably Internet Explorer). The image I see in the forums on the browser is identical to the one I can save to desktop and view otherwise (or open in a new page/tab). Also, if you ARE using Ie, it may still try and fit the image in a single screen, even if you open it in a new window/tab. :x

Okay, I'll accept that it isn't the forum's fault. However, I have looked at the images in other browsers, and they are only slightly better. In that case, I suspect my image viewer is applying some measure of image enhancement. It's the only thing I can think of. Unfortunately, the image viewer I use, CDisplay, doesn't tell you what it's doing other than giving a bunch of numbers and a description that I can't equate easily to settings in Gimp. Otherwise, I'd run the images through Gimp, make the changes, and then upload. I may fiddle with it some more and see what I can do.
One thing that shouldn't be happening regardless is the lessening of sharpness, as far as I can tell. The pic is razor sharp in my viewer (which gives no setting information for that nor shows a checkbox of any kind) and in Gimp (without adjustment). Very frustrating.
Brian: I use Firefox, but I've looked at them in IE and Google Chrome, so I think I've covered my bases there.
Edit: The forum is resizing the image down about 10% or so. I think that may be the cause of the sharpness issue in part.
Edit 2: Ugg. More than 10%. More like 20%.
Quick tech-test for me, Sinom-- If you resize your window and make it smaller, do the pictures shrink even more?
On my end, I get scrollbars. It's not automatic on the part of the forum to resize the images.
Edit: Though, now that I think about it, maybe certain THEMES do? That's a strange thought; I'm not clear on how much they change the style.... I kinda want to help you get this fixed; it really shouldn't be doing that. :x

No, the picture size remains the same, and I get scrollbars if it's too much. I just now realized how much it's getting resized somewhere in the process.
I just tried opening the file directly from the hard drive, and there's no resizing in Firefox and the pic looks pretty good, although the color balance is a little off from what I'm seeing in CDisplay. Either the forum is resizing the image from tinypic.com, or tinypic is resizing it. Let me test that real fast... ... Okay. It looks like tinypic.com is the resizing culprit. I may have to find a different image storage location.
I use either imgur.com or my own server.
Amusing thought: "This image is smaller, and I can't figure out why. All I did was host it on Tinypic.com!" (Yes, I know, it's a derivation of tinyurl, and not actually supposed to be resizing images. But still.)

Brian: Your spoiler inside my quote shows nothing. Anyway, attach, new tab URL. Six of one, half-dozen of the other. No real reason to bother Rez about it.

Ah, guess it was cached on my end and they block direct linking. I'm trying to figure out a solution for you where you don't have to work so hard for your images to get displayed properly. :/
I rehosted it on SR and edited the above; spoiler should work (now).
Edit: This may mean you point to an image and I travel in your wake, making it easier to view for the lazy among us. :p

Well, just to be clear on all counts of this discussion, I wasn't having trouble getting the image to show, but I guess it was so large that it was resizing down a bunch anyway, for whatever reason. Only the direct link gave me the full-sized result.
Are you saying your ISP is blocking direct linking? Whatever for?
No, the hosting site blocks pulling the image onto another site for display (this one) to prevent people from using their bandwidth without actually visiting their site (as bandwidth costs money).
Incidentally, the embeded version displays at identical size for me to the direct linked one, at a glance.

Yeah, yours did and I can see that you're hosting the image at a different site than me, but for some reason, the postimage.org embedding did not even though I specified that they should not resize the image.
Silent/hidden maximums on image size, probably. Since we're getting off topic (yet again), enjoy some Mami-sempai:

Nice picture but it feels slightly off. It's like the artist is experimenting with light, angles and perception.
I'm almost positive extreme lighting effects in that image are hiding some flaws in the original design.
Quite a few, it's all good.

Aww, back when Chi-chi didn't take SuperBitch levels!
In all fairness, Goku is an idiot, has died multiple times, is an idiot, had gotten her son kidnapped by a green alien that left said son in the wild (with dinosaurs!), and is an idiot.
I'm not saying she's right, but I understand.
And when she did train one of her sons, he became a super saiyan at an earlier age than any other!
Clearly, she is a master trainer!
I suddenly realize that there's this weird Doctor Who parallel/inversion:
Dragonball: the main character is a humanoid alien who is at best naive and at worst a complete idiot. If not prevented, he tends to let dangerous enemies get off without much punishment, allowing them to return and wreak havoc once again. (Note, I may be severely misremembering how often that kind of thing actually happened during the Dragonball franchise. Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm unlikely to go and re-read/re-watch it to correct myself.) He is of course too naive to understand the irony that this reinforces his 'defender of the world' role because he ends up having to fight off the same enemies again and again.
Contrast Doctor Who: the main character is a humanoid alien who is at best a nerd and at worst a renegade hippie wacko who repeatedly failed his planet's equivalent of a driver's test. He has (in the new series) a nasty habit of getting carried away, occasionally even committing genocide, something his enemies like to point out when they want to get a rise out of him. However, he is in fact a pacifist who never carries a gun and even when he commits genocide, he generally does it with a screwdriver.
(I shudder to think how the Tenth Doctor would deal with Emperor Pilaf, the Red Ribbon Army, and so on.)
Neither would be high on anyone's "who would you select to survive the destruction of {character's home planet}?" list. (Well, maybe Goku might squeak through onto his planet's list, given that he's competing against Sayans, who are mostly militaristic assholes that are no fun at parties, but surely there was at least one Sayan out there who was smart and non-omnicidal??)
Okay, here's an interesting question I've been pondering as a result: would I be more interested to read a fic which reimagines Goku as a cynical chessmaster (sort of the Seventh Doctor mashed together with Ikari Gendo) who hides behind the "naive idiot" image because it suits him, and lets his enemies get off in order to be able to save the day yet again later on, or a fic which reimagines the Doctor as a naive softie whose companions, instead of stopping him from punishing enemies via massive overkill, instead have to keep reminding him that "why can't we all just get along" is not a viable negotiation strategy for dealing with Daleks?
Either sort of fic could be either quite awesome, or absolute rubbish. "Chessmaster Goku" in particular seems liable to suffer the same sorts of dreary problems exhibited by most "Dumbledore is eeeeeeeeevil" type fics.
Chessmaster Goku would by far be the more difficult of the two for two reasons.
The first, Goku has more than enough opportunities to wish for anything he wants in canon. There isn't any reason for him to continue the idiot mask pretty early in the story.
The second, there isn't anyone for him to play chess against. Goku moves in straight lines; almost anyone who has ever been his enemy is so because they just happened to get in his way while he was doing something else. Once they're out of the way it's 'out of sight, out of mind' as far as Goku cares, usually.
And Goku has been killing people pretty regularly since he was a kid.
Back on topic...
A nice fantasy future-scape, although I'm not sure what the point of an in-atmo floating ring habitat is.

Yes, this. The only fic that did smart Goku in a way that was interesting got around that. Turns out going SSJ also expands your mind, afterwards, Goku finds himself mildly above average instead of below average. It wasn't a long fic, but it played with the fact Goku was mostly unhappy with the change.
Well, it's not like Goku exactly has a fantastic life:
So, let me get this straight: I am one of like 2 people who is capable of and willing to save the world from alien invasion. When I was a kid I repeatedly saved the world from conquest and defeated the local Satan. I die countless times doing so, having my friends murdered whenever I am even a moment too slow, I live on a planet where really I have to forgive anyone willing to switch sides (even if they want to kill ME personally) because that might be the only way there's enough firepower around to beat the guys giving them orders. I live on a planet with a bullseye on it, and not only that, but its best and brightest are literally recording my fights in order to build super robots to drive the planet to extinction.
Seriously, when's my next scheduled lobotomy? I'm remembering too much.
He does kind of kill quite a count really in both his childhood and adulthood. He prefers not to, but he does do it. As I recall, its quite a bit less after Freiza though. Generally, aside from Vegeta, the way to survive is be weak enough that he considers you no threat. If he can one shot you, then he really sees nothing wrong with leaving you simply crippled on the ground instead of dead (Even if you could get up and wipe out north america).

Does it even -have- a name? I've seen it referred to as both the Garnet Rod (because of the talisman which -is- named, the Garnet Orb) or the Time Staff, but I don't think either name is specifically canon either.

I miss Steph as Batgirl, she was fun. I also miss Barbara as Oracle. She was more interesting in that role.
Cassandra Cain is my Batgirl. I preferred Steph as Spoiler. At least then she had a good reason for not being quite good enough; she was a noob growing into the role. That so many authors couldn't get past that is frustrating (though not nearly as frustrating as seeing them let Adam Beechen write Cass).
For what it's worth, Steph finally got over the 'not good enough' as batgirl, which is another reason why I like her as batgirl. She got more out of the identity than Babs and Cass did. ^_~
Cass honestly never really interested me much though. She felt too much like Batman, with a darker past from the former assassin background (and boobs, obviously), so even though there was that redemption aspect to her...eh, didn't really grab me. That said, first impressions situation with her for me, I never really picked up her comic book series, and so I only tended to observe her peripherally in other comics.
Out of curiosity, was Beechen the guy behind OYL and then Deathstroke/drugs? Because that was pretty stupid. >_>
Yes, he was. And yes, it was. It's like he's trying to top War Games for stupid.
Damn you for reminding me of War Games. >_>

Quote from: JonÉowyn battles the Witch-king of Angmar, painted by Donato Giancola.
No duh. =p
I meant that those names didn't mean anything to me so I didn't know what the setting was about, and never seen that artist's work before. =p
Strictly speaking the Nazgûl shouldn't have visible eyes, but I gotta admit he looks better with them.
It's a pivotal scene from Return of the King, volume three of Lord of the Rings. The Witch-king is basically a guy who got corrupted by accepting a gift he really shouldn't have, and ended up a wraith with no visible form.
Ah. I haven't read that in close to two decades so all I tend to remember from that are 'hobbit', 'ring' and 'fellowship'. Also all the quotes that pervade popular culture.

Oh, in case you missed it, Peter Jackson wrote, produced, and directed three major films of The Lord of the Rings trilogy in recent years. There was a
small amount of buzz about it. ;p
You missed this in #sr. I mentioned those movies were too freaking long. =p

Yeah, I noticed that too. Seems out of place, but it's in the "original" that I have. May be just a quirk of the artist.

AAAAH~! Cutesy overload!
/me kills Merc and nails him to his house as a talisman against further cutesy attacks.
Her glossy hair was cluster'd o'er a brow
Bright with intelligence, and fair and smooth;
Her eyebrow's shape was like the aerial bow,
Her cheek all purple with the beam of youth,
Mounting, at times, to a transparent glow,
As if her veins ran lightning.

The Madness of Mission 6
(http://i48.tinypic.com/34don5j.jpg)
In 1976, Cosmonaut Nikolai Peckmann was sent alone to an orbiting space station for what would be called Mission Six- to study the radiation levels and strange circumstances that killed all four crewmen of the last research mission. By the third day, Peckmann's broken transmissions were coming back to ground control filled with increasing paranoia and delusion. He claimed that the spirits of the dead cosmonauts were coming to claim him, and that he had to keep moving to evade them. He shouted that if he could capture consume these spirits himself while he still had strength, he could move to the next level of consciousness...Truly the rantings of an insane man. Indeed, video recovered later would show Peckmann running around the confined but maze-like station, downing emergency sedatives like a madman....pausing in a corner momentarily, only to throw back vitamin pills and give chase to his invisible demons. He had exhausted the entire cargo of vitamins, pills, and fresh fruit well ahead of schedule...It was determined that another mission to recover any remains or gather any more research would be a waste of the people's money, and the station was allowed to drift out of orbit and into space- a failure never to be mentioned again. It was ordered and assumed that all video and paper evidence had been destroyed.

Most chans are very hot-link/url-embed protected which probably is why things suddenly failed.
Alright, I'll just put links then. With that in mind...

Once upon a long long time ago, that was something I liked to do and I'd started the thread for that very reason. While I haven't commented much, it's neat to see someone pick up the concept again.
Keep at it, Kaldrak! =)
