"That was fast," Jessica says, "We're in the Beastlands, alright."
Alyssa nods, "Yes, it's a quirk of the demi-plane. Very useful and something we're still figuring the exacts for. In any case, lets get some altitude and get our bearings."
"There's not much point," Bastian shakes his head, "It's all primal forests and hunting grounds here. Unless we're lucky enough to be by a larger settlement that's cleared some land, and there's not many of those."
"If we are, we'll never find it from under the canopy, though. A quick peek won't hurt, but I don't want to go alone on it. Better to stick together."
Alyssa looks around, searching for a path that might help trigger her new senses.
"I'll do it," Emily offers, flying straight up.
At the same time you feel about. You don't feel lost at all - but you are in the middle of the woods, so a direction and a purpose would help.
Alyssa focuses on her want to find the seed, hoping to get a direction.
Perhaps predictably, nothing at all.
Alyssa sighs and waits for Emily.
Emily comes down, "Nothing," she reports.
"It's not a huge problem, there's ways and means to go deeper," Bastian says, "It'll just take some walking."
Alyssa nods, "Let's move."

"Hardly a threat, we could scare it away," Jessica says, "I'm more surprised one even approaches me."
"They're intelligent, right? Scare it off?"
Jessica turns and is a blur, a dart into the blushes.

Alyssa frowns, "They're adorable. Just leave them be. Catch the leader and give him a toss, they'll leave."
Jessica glances over, "I'm sorry?" she asks after a moment. "Adorable?"
"Yes! Absolutely! They have amazing scale patterns and love to cuddle. Reptiles love body heat, after all. And they're pack animals, which means they're sociable! And their temperaments are super calm.
And their goofy little antennae!
I'm training a bunch as an infiltration trap unit. I'm going to awaken a few to help with more precise control and deployment."
Stone silence from Jessica. She says not a word, eyes a little wide. "You cuddle with shocker lizards," she says, voice completely flat.
"Sure! Contact is important for socialization. It's important that they get used to being around people so they better recognize what's prey or a threat and what isn't. Same with how other animals were domesticated."
"In my homeworld, the shocker lizards number in the many thousands and infest a mountain range to the south of Balmuria. They threaten entire towns and have to be fought back. They aren't cute and cuddly, they're a menace that has to be held at bay." Jessica goes on, voice still flat. "Truly in Creation everything can vary."
"Oh? Hm. Maybe I can send a few of my awakened ones there to form social structures and set territories or bring more in for us... if we can set up a hierarchy in the wild, then their areas of expansion might be controlled and redirected.
I also have ideas about altering them. Different elemental alignments. Earth would be fabulous, if I could. Have them infiltrate an enemy stronghold and start a cascade earthquake and bring the whole thing down.
Or fill every open space with fire. Acid could simply eat through the structural bracings or any weapons and equipment they can find. Food stores, too."
"Mystra," Jessica murmurs. "I often wonder where mages who create strange things come from, such as hippogriffs or strange halfbreeds. I wonder no more. Thank you but no, that problem is delicate enough not to send a rash means of possibly destabilizing it."
"Have we had this conversation before?" Jarem murmurs, "It sounds familiar to me."
"Regardless of that," Jessica cuts in, "Let's just go then, we waste time on nothing important to our current task."
Alyssa crosses her arms and pouts, starting to walk, looking for any sort of path.
"That's just mean. Lizards are perfectly normal pets and familiars, but throw a little magic in and everyone loses their minds. You don't even know what they want or think. Any animal that out breeds their ecosystem causes the same strife, and no one goes crazy when they see a rat, viper, or large cat familiar. And, I'll point out, each of those find their ways into settlements and attack people."
"Would you like to see some settlements past Parsifal when they were overrun?" Jessica retorts, anger leaking into her voice.
"I'm sure they're horrible. I never denied they were, but it's a thing of nature that happens when populations run out of control and treating it as some sort of diabolical plan by creatures with an animal intelligence isn't the right way to respond.
If their populations are that outrageous, maybe consider investigating what happened to their natural predators. Any druid can help. You're jumping straight past figuring out why to it being an organized plan of some sort by animal that has no sentience.
I'm not denying the problem or dismissing it in any way, but talking to animals is a pretty low level spell, and for as much of a personal issue this seems to be for you, it doesn't sound like you've tried to understand the problem, only exterminate it.
Take for example: lizards are one and all cold blooded. What are they even doing in a mountain range in the first place? They normally settle near bodies of water and rarely wander. If the mountains are their natural habitat on your world, what's causing these normally fiercely territorial lizards to leave it? Unless they're a recent import into your world, they've been in that ecosystem for who knows how long and there was balance..."
Alyssa trails off with a blink, "... well, I guess Ianvasah left more of a legacy than I thought... my point still stands. Any druid can investigate what's out of balance and an electrical immunity spell is nearly child's play for almost any of your wizards. Have you sent one to find out and start working to solve it, or does it do more good to just try and exterminate them? What if there's something else they're keeping in check that then goes out of control? Exterminate that too? Ianvasah's Grove is sure to have a druid visiting it at some point, and I have no problems with asking one to help and even providing the transportation and protective spell personally, if need be, but wiping them out as a plague is wrong."
"You don't understand. They don't have natural predators," Jessica begins, "Not even a lion or bear can withstand more than a few, and they almost never go alone. A stray one is the exception, not the rule. They kill and they work with a steady, unblinking, hostile aggression."
"Then they're probably getting pushed out by something else then. It's still something to look into."
"Ladies, we're getting close to a path I know," Bastian says, "Or one that's like one I know." He cuts in smoothly, "Weapons up, it might be dangerous."
"Oh? How dangerous?" Emily asks.
"The weak who try to use this become the strong's food," Bastian smiles just a little bit, "This won't be some trivial thing."
Alyssa nods, "Let's go, hopefully it won't be too bad."

Alyssa keeps on the path, trying to lead the others through the dangers.

If I've detected all of those creatures, can I use my new Minotaur Sense thing to get an idea of the path beyond them and use that to target the teleport?
You need at least a reliable description of an area to teleport to it with greater teleport.
Can I teleport us up into the air to get a view of a place beyond, then double jump/teleport there?
You have to teleport to somewhere that can support you - basic rule of teleportation spells.
Can't everyone fly? If not, who can't?
Alyssa turns to the others, "Wait here, I'm going to fly up and see if I can spot to teleport us to past these creatures."
With that, she takes to the air.
Easy enough. Atop the canopy, you can see spots that would support a party, sure. Great tangles of branches, woven together into an almost hole free floor, thick and heavy.
Alyssa heads back down to the others.
"Okay, there are places where the canopy will support us. Everyone ready?"
As soon as she gets confirmation from everyone, Alyssa teleports the past the creatures.
Clunk. The canopy supports you without the slightest give. The sky is locked in evening's twilight above as Jarem looks up. "We're good here. Let's fly just a bit haead and go back down, before we lose that path."
"Jarem's right," Bastian agrees, "We may have to go back depending on the path, but this might work."
Alyssa nods, "Yes. We don't know what kind of trial is going to be waiting for us, so I want to save as much of our strength as we can. Fighting these animals gets us nowhere, so let's do what we can to avoid it."

"Made it," Bastian says, "This is the lowest layer and where all the strongest monsters stay, especially night hunters." He glances about, "Keep your guard up, some of them can sneak up on anyone."
"I doubt they'll challenge us unless we find one of the greatest of them," Jessica says, "But I've heard stories about the strongest ones being formidable."
Alyssa nods, "I think one of us should stick to the shadows and one with the group. Opinion?"
Jessica smiles, "I am the shadow that not even Shar can control," she declares, before she slips away.
"Then I'll stay with the group," Bastian says, not missing a beat.

It's a unique predator of the deepest layer of the Beastlands. It is the Night Lord, a panther said to be more powerful than a tarrasque. It pounces hard, is extremely difficult to hit with weapons or anything aimed and shrugs off most resistible spells.
Do I know if this thing can fly?
You don't think so offhand, but you wouldn't rule it out.

The creature tenses.
Jessica rests her hand on it. "He's scared," Jessica says, "The Golden Bear, not the lodge. We're interested in the bear, and if it's a problem, I will deal with it." As he is healed, Jessica strokes his fur slowly. Wounds healed, the Night Lord stands and rises.
"He'll help us," Jessica says, "He's given his word."
"You can talk to it?" Bastian arks, arms crossed, "Thought that was what druids did."
"I can talk to anything now," Jessica says simply, as if putting the matter to rest. "He knows the scent of the Golden Bear and will lead us if we find it, but it may take time."
Alyssa nods, "We don't require you to help us, just lead us. Thank you for your help."
In your mind you hear Jessica's voice. 'I may have to take him with me - he insisted in case the Golden Bear can get back at it after. Whatever this bear is, the only reason he's helping is because he fears the divine more.'
Alyssa nods, "You only have to get us close. Let's start when you're ready."

You wander a time - and after an hour or so? In the gloom of night you come to a small patch where the canopy breaks. Moonlight cascades down here - and here lies a skeleton, broken and bleached white. A human skeleton, or something close to it on a glance.
Alyssa glances around for any threats before approaching it to look it over.

You don't see anything around here awry, but an old, moss covered mace lies on the ground next to him, as well as a sheathed short sword.
Alyssa inspects him, "I'm.. Still new to this, but how can I ensure that their spirit got to where it was supposed to be?"
Alyssa inspects the weapons with Detect Magic, doing what she can without moving them.
"Let me show you," Jessica steps aside, "Emily," she calls, "You'd do well to watch this as well."
Emily comes over as you check over the items, "Hold a moment on those," Jessica says, "Watch. It's a simple bit of magic, the ability to alter reality. You'll be able to do this yourselves one day."
Alyssa watches intently, eager to learn anything related to magic and Divinity.
You can sense it now, a feeling of...something happens. Reality obeys will, rather than will obeys reality. A moment where the dead sing in obedience, where the gates of cause and effect part in favor of desire.
"He found his proper rest," Is Jessica's announcement. "Additionally, he cares nothing for the weapons he left behind, we are free to take them as long as we bury his body."
Jessica points at the earth nearby. It obeys, dirt moving aside, a grave dug in a moment. The skeleton floats into the grave and down, put down gently. A coffin of wood surrounds and encases the bones, then the dirt returns to whence it came. A grave marker rises, a plain bit of field stone cleansed smooth as it rises. On it the following inscription is written:
Magusson Ordfin, Hunter. His soul rests in the name of the Shadow of Shar's Bane.
She used alter reality for a variant of speak with dead, something akin to move earth to dig the grave, a bit of basic telekinesis for the bones and then magic to dredge the stone up and polish it, then engrave it.
Alyssa nods, "That was... excellent to see. Thank you, Jessica. Thank you, Magusson Ordfin, for your sacrifice and weapons."
Alyssa bows to the grave and picks up the weapons and inspects them.
Loot.
You can tell the faint remnants of a curse linger, but the curses have been put to rest.
Quieter, Jarem stands next to Jessica. "That's your title?" he murmurs, eyes on the grave marker.
"It will be one of them. The Shadow of Shar's Bane." Jessica agrees. "That says everything I want to say with my divinity. One day, night and shadow will be safe again. One day the nights will be filled with goodly hunters that will protect others, not prey on them."
"A good goal and title. Every step gets us closer. Let's keep moving."
Alyssa offers the weapons to the others as she goes.
Headshakes. "We're fine for now, keep them. Jessica," Emily asks, "Will you want a share of this treasure?"
"I may if something catches my eye," Jessica says, "But no. Yours need them more than mine does." She has a ghost of a smile dance across her lips, "Besides, we just claimed a great bounty as a gift. Jarem's new shield came from that."
"A fine shield it is," Jarem agrees as you begin to go. "My thanks again."
Jessica nods and slips into the shadows, gone once more, as your guide Night Lord leads you along.

Alyssa glances at the others with a raised eyebrow, "Jessica, Bastian, scout? Or just walk up on our intrepid hunters? Or poachers, as it might be."
Jessica steps into view a moment later. In near silence she whispers, "Slaad." she says, a single word saying it all.
Jarem grimaces, unsheathing his blade as silently as he can.
Bastian nods slightly, "Be ready," he whispers back.
Alyssa grunts.

When you finish that last bite and just kind of slump in content and when that first cold drink sends shivers through your chest? I don't get that anymore. Those were good feelings. Now it's just... That's not a bad thing, really, but I miss falling into my pillows and bed when I'm tired and my eyes are starting to burn."

A cry out. The sound of footsteps, fleeing.
'A solitary hunter,' Jessica sends a moment later, 'No harm, we startled him away.'
"Most likely, but let's do a quick sweep as we continue. Let's not make assumptions and let a scout for a larger group set us up."

After about another half hour, Night Lord sniffs the ground and pauses.
Alyssa stops and looks at Jessica for translation.
"Night Lord smells it," Jessica explains once she emerges from the shadows. "Fairly recently."
"Let's move more stealthily. Those of us who can, do so. If you don't feel confident in your stealth, keep some distance and use flight to keep your gear from making sound. If need be, keep stationary and Emily can teleport you in."
"Careful and forward," Jarem murmurs in agreement, "Nice and slow now."
So that's your plan then? Anything else to add?
"We know this thing is supposed to be immune to spells and weapons, so be cautious until we find something that works. We may have to do something like take it a few hundred feet up and drop it. If you have ideas, don't keep them to yourself."
"Let's see how strong it is and work from there," Jarem says at last, "But dropping it's a good idea, or putting it to sleep, or tying it up. We don't have to kill it, merely make it unable to fight."
Alyssa nods, "I doubt sleep will work, that's a fairly low level spell, but any sort of immobilization is good... Maybe... does anyone have Force Cage readied? We could have someone use Time Stop and Force Cage on it, then start experimenting with things... if I had my old abilities, I could just pin it with my Telekinesis, but..."
"I have a powerful sleep spell," Dolmaya says, "I can make up that difference."
"I can also knock it down," Jarem says, "We have options here."
Emily shakes her head, We could rely on a wish if we need to."
Alyssa nods, "We've got a solid framework then. Let's go."
Order here? It may well matter.
Jessica, Bastian, Me, Jarem, Dolmaya, Emily.
The Night Lord leads you along and on. It sniffs away a goodly time until it leads you to a little pond. Big enough to be a lake really, waters still and with thick black algae largely covering the surface of it.
Alyssa looks around for any sign of the bear or other creatures.

No sign of tracks that you can find, but the Night Lord sniffs around the pond. Jessica kneels besides it and after a moment, "The trail goes here," she says after a moment. "It ends here as well, so it's either the lake or a dead end."
Jarem meanwhile kneels and studies the algae, and quietly, "Wish she was here," he says, as, "Anyone know if and how dangerous that black algae is?"
Alyssa inspects the algae to try and identify it!

It looks like black algae, but it's not quite right. It reminds of you of an algae that's said to eat any solid material that comes in contact with it.
"I think... It's not normal algae... Hold on..."
Alyssa looks around for a stone to throw into the algae to test her theory.
The stone is tossed in - and is consumed as it hits the algae, fast enough that the water isn't even disturbed.
Jarem whistles, "Disintegration algae?" he says aloud. "That's a nice trick."
"Deadly is what it is," Bastian steps back carefully, "It wasn't colored black, but I came on something like this a long time ago. Lost most of my arm to it. Don't take it lightly."
"Very handy, though. If you cultivate it and use it in outhouses and latrines... Even a small amount for a town or military unit would help cleanliness. I wonder if there's a way to safely collect some..."
Anything from my K check tell me how to collect/transport it?
Oh, that's easy. You'd just need some of the water here and a container immune to disintegration or being consumed.
Easier said than done.
"I'll have to come back here for some of it later. I can think of a lot of ways it'd be useful... For now... Where is that bear..."
Alyssa takes to the air to get a better view and hopes to spot something.

"Can't see anything. Ideas? Unless it's sleeping at the bottom of the lake, it probably swam through here to the other side."
"I'll take the Night Lord to the other side," Jessica offers, doing that. In the meantime?
"You know we'll probably have to go down there," Dolmaya says, "We'll need to get rid of the algae."
"Yes, but I'd like to collect it instead of just burning it away, but we need something that's immune to disintegration to hold it."
"That's tougher," Jarem says, "We could make something for it, but it would cost money. Is there anything we have that doesn't disintegrate?"
Uh, do we?
"Not that I recall, unless I'm forgetting something..."
"Nothing handy," Bastian says after some thought. "Damn. We can still get rid of it and forget about it - it's useful but it's nothing a spell can't do."
Alyssa nods, but pauses... "If it swam through the lake and came out on the other side, we won't have to do anything with it... Otherwise... A gate or the like, to skim it off, maybe?"
"You're overthinking it," Dolmaya says, "Enough heat or fire should do it, or desiccation."
"Or just enough for someone to go examine the bottom," Jarem points out, "That should do easily enough."
Can I just teleport past it? How does it work with water?
You have to teleport onto a surface that supports you. So you could teleport to the bottom of the water but not the middle of it. You'd have to be on solid (or muddy as a lake bottom is anyway) ground.
Can I do that without having seen the bottom?
Greater teleport requires a reliable description.
"I can try to teleport past it straight to the bottom of the lake."
"Be careful," Is Emily's advice, "In case it's a trap, but what bear hunts underwater?"
"One that guards divine seeds and is, reportedly, immune to all spells and weapons."
"If it does," Jessica calls as she returns, "No sign of its trail on the other side."
"Well, I guess it's into the water. That wasn't something I was exactly expecting to do: fight a bear underwater. Who needs water breathing?"
"Could you?" Jarem says, "I think I'm the only one who still needs to breathe."
"No, unfortunately. Like I said, I wasn't expecting to fight a bear underwater, so I don't have any spells of that sort ready. Does anyone else? If not, then the plan will have to be to teleport down and bait it back to land."
"I can," Jessica steps forward, a tap to Jarem's arm. "There."
"Just like that," Emily marvels, "Isn't it incredible?"
To this Jessica admits with a slight smile, "As the non magically talented one of our group - yes, it is. Every little wondering and bit of envy feels satisfied."
Alyssa chuckles, "That feeling is usually what leads people into magic, you know. Okay, everyone gather around and I'll teleport us. We don't know exactly how deep it will be, so let's get some light ready, just in case. Daylight, anyone?"
"I can manage light," Jarem says, "Ready?"
Alyssa nods and gets everyone together, then focuses on the bottom of the center of the lake to teleport everyone!
It's dark and wet. Light shows a muddy lake bottom - and you can see ahead is a gap in the mud, a pit of water plunging down.
Alyssa points it out to the others and heads towards it.
It's not dangerous down here and without needing to breathe, swimming is simple. You reach the gap - it's a gap straight down, water filled. As you get close, you can feel a current coming up from it, as if pushing water out from below.
Alyssa looks to the others and points down into it, leading the way in.
Are you under freedom of movement or similar?
No. I can teleport us to the bottom of the chasm, if need be.
As you get closer, suddenly the current gets stronger, pulling you ahead.

Somehow you manage to out think it - you pivot back just so, enough to momentarily give you a chance to jet back, which you do. Jessica's with you while the others are swept down and away, down into the chasm, pulled by a current that changes by the moment.
Alyssa tries to swim to the others, to gather them together and try to anchor them into pulling themselves down the sides of the chasm.
You choose to swim ahead, carried by the current. You reach them quickly - for after about 50ft it empties out into an open cavern. A fall into a lake, shores to either side. Your friends are swimming out as you reach them, to the shores and safe.
The water simply stops at those shores, unnaturally coming to a stop, flowing no further.
"Well, interesting. Very nice, actually. This would make for a fantastic get-away lair. A little climate control and some luxury and it'd be perfect."
Jessica appears next to you once you're out of the water.
"Different," Jarem agrees, taking off his helmet to shake his head dry. "Refreshing."
"So what is this place? A lair?" Emily wonders aloud.
"Likely. All bears can swim fairly well, and they hibernate in caves. Seems a perfectly eccentric match for a celestial bear guardian. Let's start looking around."
Past the shore is a pair of passages that lead further in. In one you see it - a vein of gold runs through the stone, thick as your waist and long, going about 30ft before it tapers off. The other's not so gold-blessed. Both go to turns - one to the left and one to the right and downwards.
"Greed to mislead? What do you think?"
Alyssa wanders, looking for any tracks or sign of passage.
Perception.
"Could be, but no," Jarem shakes his head, "In Arcadia, in Celestia or Elysium? I'd believe it. Here it's the Beastlands. It's not the Heaven to care that much about it, not like that. It may still be the wrong way, but I don't think it's that sort of trial here."
Jessica hms, "I don't see any magic around it and a simple spell says it's real gold, not fool's gold."
"Do we have time to mine it, though?" Bastian points out, "We have more important goals. We can play prospectors later."

"Oh, I wasn't intending to mine it. Not now, at least. After? A teleport back here should be easy enough."
No sign of tracks.
"Still, this has to be it. The Night Lord's still up there," Jessica says, "And insists there's no other scent or trail from the lake."
Alyssa nods, "I don't see any tracks, so it's a guess. Who feels lucky?"
"I do," Jarem says, pulling out a coin and flipping it.

A catch and a glance at it. He starts to head down the gold marked passage after.
Alyssa follows!
You go down this passage. It leads to an open cavern, a dead end. Here great big hunks of golden ore is laid about. Hundreds of pieces of it, ranging from pebble sized to larger than a pit fiend. It's all left here, littered about and dropped.
"Ho-" Bastian begins, stopping cold the moment he sees it. "I've seen dragons that would kill for that much gold. Most of them."
"And it's just sitting here?" Jessica agrees, eyes radiant blue. "...no magic? That or it's concealed beyond even my sight."
"Beastlands are a big place. And we're underneath it. We'll definitely have to come back... Or... We could summon some Earth elementals and leave one of our bags with them to fill and come back around after we finish with the bear?"
"Let's come back," Jarem agrees, "It's a fortune, but it's not going anywhere. Besides, if the bear's intelligent it may be its treasure."
"Other path, then."
You go to the other path. It opens up into another cavern. Several burrow paths go from it and in the center? On a bed of dried leaves and grass sleeps a large golden bear. It shimmers a metallic gold, curled into a ball and fast asleep.
Alyssa whispers to the others, "Well, there it is. Anyone come up with ideas for this?"
Alyssa does her best to study the bear from where she is, to spot it's weaknesses.
Headshakes all around.
In your mind you hear, 'I can't see any reason to attack it while it sleeps. That goes against any meaning of the hunt on this plane. Why don't we awaken it and see? I can talk to it.'
You don't see any weaknesses beyond that or a normal bear. Which it isn't, so it's anyone's guess here about weaknesses.
Alyssa nods to Jessica, "You're more of an expert here than I am. Follow whatever bear protocol you know."
Gildas level rising, for the lurking pixies.
You get puzzled look from Jessica, but she comes forward. She says not a word that you can hear, but the bear rises. In an instant it stands on its hind legs like a human, taller than any of you. It peers at you, "Well, about time!" It says. "I wondered how long I'd have to be mysterious but conspicuous for someone worthwhile to find me! You'd think Creation's run out of hot headed adventurers with more lust for coin than life." It speaks in an old man's voice, clear and smooth Common spoken. "There's only so many ways I can trim down the herd of legendary predators here before it bores me, and I passed that some time ago."
The bear points one claw right at Jessica, "So you got a taste for one and thought you'd find another? About time this got going. Do you know how BORING a forest is after a few hundred years? I should fail you all now and rend you into oblivion to make a point to the next group who finds me." The bear throws its hands up into the air, "But with my luck, that would take a billion years."
"...I'm sorry?" Jessica tries at last. "We would have come earlier if we'd known."
"Well, to be fair, you're not exactly advertising yourself. Also, there's another person with the Golden Bear moniker, so that probably mixed some people up."
A growl at that, "Regardless, are you here for this?" It challenges right back.
"For what, exactly? We're following rumors and legends, so let's be clear what's on the table."
"The gold, of course! The gold!" The bear says, "What else?"
Alyssa sighs, "We're looking for divine energy here in the Beastlands."
"Divine energy?" The bear rumbles, "Like what?"
Alyssa looks at the others, "Should we?"
Jarem shakes his head, but Emily says, "I think it's worth a small risk to tell him. It might know."
Bastian shrugs, "Pick your poison."
"There's a Divine Seed being protected by a Guardian somewhere here in the Beastlands. The rumors and legends of you are of a golden bear that's completely immune to magic and weapons. Sounded like one hell of a guardian, so here we are."
"Strange how the one without them is the one to have balls," The bear agrees, "I sensed something had happened so I moved to get noticed. Well done finding me, finally." The golden bear seconds. "I have your seed if you're ready to challenge for it."
Alyssa turns on the others, "I told you the gold was a distraction!"
Alyssa turns back to the bear, "So, since you're being reasonable and hospitable, could we get introductions and details about this challenge?"
"You may," The bear agrees, "But it's more fun if I don't tell you, and I have no obligation to." A rather toothy smile-alike is on its face as, "But I've prepared at least a few that will wet your steel and bloody your blades."
Alyssa sighs, "Why can't any of these challenges ever be polite? Like, tea with honey and snacks first? Well, I suppose let's start."
Your answer is that all of you appear in a lightly forested area, the night sky glimpsed above, cloudy and dark. You're lucky you have darkvision, which lets you see well enough. For 20ft away from you in each of the four cardinal directions, a large tree uproots itself, groaning aloud as it does.
"Get them!" The northern one calls.
"Crush them!" The second one yells.
"Pound them!" The third bellows.
"Grind them to paste beneath our bark!" The four echos.

They look like treants to you - nothing odd about them.
This is a Guardian though, so nothing is assured.
Alyssa replies in Treant, "We don't want to fight but we will!"

Alyssa turns to the others, "How's Dolmaya?"
"Alive," The Guardian says, "But she wasn't really that entertaining, was she?"
"She was excellent, and we passed your test. Don't be rude. Why did you bring me here alone?"
"You interest me the most, and you're clearly the leader." Is the Guardian's answer, the bear coming up to you. "The other mages with you seem stronger, yet the work under you instead of over you. Why?"
Alyssa shakes her head, "Leadership isn't about power, though I will admit a leader does need power. Leadership through power is domination. I value freedom above all else. They know it, and they know I fight for it. They don't follow me because I make them. They follow me because we're friends, because I try to help them improve, and because their goals matter to me."
You get looked at a long time before, "But what will you do to achieve your own goals?"
"Ask them for help, of course. My goals are to make magic and education prolific and accessible. I've helped improve one such place and I've established a second. I've pulled in the wanders and those looking to become more. This, combined with using magic to ease people's lives and guiding those lives to live in balance will be my legacy. That is my goal."

Dolmaya's down but sitting up, wounds healing as Jarem tends to her. Emily's at your side nigh instantly and Bastian cracks his knuckles. "That it?"
"That'll do," Is the response by the Guardian. "Which of you will take it?
"Emily can hold it easily enough until we get home to decide what to do with it."
And thus - in an instant you're back on the surface in the dappled moonlight. Emily holds the divine seed while Jessica exhales, "We got it," she says at last.
Alyssa nods and pats Jessica on the shoulder, "Jessica, thank you. We couldn't have done this without you. I'm in your debt, and if you ever need help, I'll be there. Let's get back to the tower and see what this has fully."
"I suggest it's used with all haste," Jessica points out, "Preferably now. Before others have a chance to realize what you hold and try to take it."
Alyssa nods and heads back to the tower to see how many charges it has and discuss who uses them.
As you start to go, "You understand now means now, do you not?" Jessica adds, rather pointedly.
"Ahem," Jarem clears his throat as Dolmaya stirs, "This is hardly a good place, but are matters that grave?"
"Yes, unless you believe that Shaundakul and Selune will both turn a blind eye to such a thing," Jessica says, bluntly and to the point. "Each side is an unreplaceable treasure unlike any other in Creation, save the other seeds. They're an incredible opportunity. Only a blind fool would let that pass easily."
Alyssa raises an eyebrow, "Well... Fair point, but I don't think either will honestly try anything. That said, we can go Moore's realm for this if you feel safer that way."
Greater Plane Shift, GOOOOO!
"We'll come back for the gold after," Jarem notes, "No point in letting it sit there, the Guardian's gone now."
As you shift you feel the light of Chronias. It shines so bright here as you appear...in a room in Hope's Landing. One of Moore's rooms where he greets guests. Not really where you aimed for, but it seems to be where you ended up.
Bastian goes to sit in one of the chairs, and with a heavy breath out, "Good fight. So..." he looks at the seed. "Now what?"
Dolmaya slumps into a chair as her wounds continue to mend, a bloodied mess, "We have decisions to make."
"Big ones," Jarem agrees, going to rest as well. He takes off his helmet and runs a hand over his wet, sweaty head. "How many times can it be used?"
Alyssa inspects the seed!
The seed holds three charges within it, alive and ready.
"Three it seems. I'll start the discussion by saying it only makes sense to me to offer one to Jessica for her help. Agreed?"
"It's only fair," Bastian says at last.
Jessica interrupts with a gentle, "Alyssa. Do you know what my sister's biggest strength is?"
"No. I can't say that we've worked together enough to really get a feel for each other."
"She can make allies so easily," Jessica explains, "I've never had the gift she has, but she's taught me the wisdom of it. My price is," She comes over and offers her hand, "Friendship and alliance. We're both new to divinity, we'll need each other's help."
Alyssa looks confused as she takes her hand, "Well, I had sort of already assumed that much. Friends help each other, and you've helped us. Now, I'm not saying you're going to be a Godmother or anything any time soon, but to me, there's a level of friendship that comes with that automatically.
Are you sure, absolutely positive, that you don't want a part of this Seed? It's entirely your due, and being humble and passing on it might not be the best choice for the coming fights."
"We need friends going forward," Jessica explains, "I've seen how my sister has grown with friends like Sulia and now Queen. I'm sure."
Alyssa nods, "At the very least, you'll get a portion of the gold, then. Thank you again, Jessica."
Alyssa then turns to the others, "So that's three charges to distribute. Opinions?"
"Do we want this? Now's the time to decide," Jarem speaks up. "Bastian, Dolmaya?"
Dolmaya's wounds are mostly mended by now as she watches, and slowly, "Bastian?"
Bastian scowls a little bit as, "So I'm the half blood?" he declares, before, "Fine. Fuck that. Jarem, you started it, you answer first."
"Fuck you," Jarem laughs, a smile growing on his face. "I'll take one," he says at last. "Dolmaya?"
Dolmaya shakes her head, "I'll become One if I change my mind. But this is too much too fast, and my magic is strong enough to keep up."
"Then I have a proposition for you, Dolmaya. When my divine power increases, I'll be able to have one, and need one. How does Dolmaya, Proxy of Alyssa Songsteel sound? A decent stepping stone between the two."
"I think you have it the wrong way around," Dolmaya manages a smile, "Strange how fast you changed it on me, but events wait on no one." She nods back to Alyssa, a quiet acceptance.
"Oh, look at it this way. You're my highest counselor, teaching me what I need to know."
Alyssa suddenly rounds on Bastian, "And you. What's this half-blood nonsense? I find the insinuation that I might hold such a view of you to be insulting. Far more insulting and uncalled for than your usual gruffness. We will not go any further into this fight with some kind of schism like this boiling under our feet, so we will solve it here and now."
Bastian crosses his arms, "It wasn't remotely serious," he says, "It's a joke."
Alyssa glares at him, "You make comments on it too often for it to just be a joke, Bastian."
Alyssa sighs, "Look, Bastian. I don't know your past, but I do know the reputation of Orcs and half-Orcs. I can't understand your position on things, but I can empathize. You're not the kind to open up, but this is a splinter in your soul and mind, I think, and while I can't solve it for the world, I can solve it between us here. But you have to be part of it."
"You're wrong," Bastian says flatly, "You're making something where nothing is."

Alihana turns, "...Alyssa?" she whispers, eyes wide. The works stop to watch you, the noise of work becoming the stillness of silence.
Alyssa smiles, "Yep."
Alyssa looks at the workers, "Alihana didn't say stop."
She turns back to Alihana, "So, how are things? Where's mom and papa?"
Your words get them moving, if many eyes are still on you. "T-they're...home, I think," she says, voice small. "Y-you..." she manages, weak.
Alyssa bumps her with her hip, "Yeah, I know. Let's go find them and have this conversation all at once."
Alihana follows, eyes wide as they can be. "You're..." she says, "It's so much more now." Her voice is soft, radiant with shock. "Are...are you really Alyssa?"
Alyssa snorts and pulls her along, "You just said it, so much more. I'm still me, just more. We'll get through all that with mom and dad all at once."
In a daze Alihana follows you - and soon enough you're home. Father and Mother are there - as is another. Shaundakul is there, feet up as he sits in front of the hearthfire. He drinks from a mug of ale you overhear him say as you enter, "There she is," he says. "It's not such a long road to here for her, now."
Alyssa smiles at Shaundakul and nods, before giving her parents a hug.
"So! This is going to be a strange conversation for everyone. Has our new friend properly introduced himself?"
"Yes," Mother is calm, not a bit of panic. "He explained everything moments ago."
Shaundakul turns towards you, feet down as he finishes off his drink. Once done, "Go on. I came to lay protections here - the wicked have even more reason to find this place and take your parents for their own advantage."
Alyssa nods, "Well then, that makes this a bit shorter of a conversation. Mom, papa, sis... I'm a fully fledged Goddess now. Well, a Demi-Goddess, one of the lowest in power, but... well, there it is. I know you have lots of questions, but the core of it is this... I'm still me. There's just... More of me, so to speak. The ideals I always strove for are less goals now and more of what makes me, me. Like, in the same way a courageous person doesn't just strive for courage, they are courageous. Learning things, seeking stories and new places... Those are less things I want to do like before, and more... Things that define who and what I am."
"It's like who you are and what you are are the same thing now?" Father asks after some thought.
Alyssa nods, "Yes, exactly that. Like my goals and dreams become less things that I attain and things that I am. But, at the end of the day, I'm the daughter of a blacksmith and a seamstress, and a sister, still."

Well, need to sort out what's gonna happen with the demi-plane, then I imagine there's going to be new divinity/cleric stuff? But for actual adventuring, need money to make gear and stuff, though I am toying with the idea of going back and smacking that eye around.

Once you part ways with your family, you find Shaundakul at your side. The path winds on ahead as he merely says, "Congratulations. Momentous times are before us."
Alyssa nods slowly, "Strange things abound, and old conflicts reveal deeper dangers than anyone thought. But, before all of that.."
Alyssa turns and gives Shaundakul a hug, "Thank you for the opportunity to become what I am, and for opening the paths I've explored."
He smells like old roads and summer sunshine.
"Welcome," Shaundakul's answer is warm, "There are things to teach you now, things of divinity. Have you yet begun these lessons?"
"Maybe a single drop of the ocean. I didn't have much time between stops to really learn anything, or from anyone. I'm not even sure how my ascension changes the relationships between you, Selune, the Red Knight, and myself."
"You are no longer a servant and a follower," Shaundakul says, as he meets your gaze, "You're one of us now, newborn but far more than a mortal. Mortals see what we are, not who we are."
"I had a bit of that when I was in the Order. They saw the mantle, but not me. Still, shifting from a follower to an equal, even the least of equals, changes things. I know there are alliances between deities. I still consider you a mentor, but I'd like to expand that into being a friend and forming a more stable and long lasting relationship between you and I, your followers and mine, whoever they eventually are. I'd like to pursue the same with the Red Knight and, to some degree, Selune. Especially since she's been my host. Is there... Some sort of formal procedure for it? Or to announce it?"
A nod is your answer, and you walk on without words. Instead you come to the end of the path, a cliff over the sea. It's sunset, the light here gorgeous and picturesque. It's a stony, cliffy coast, giving you many such views of the blue ocean below.
Shaundakul goes to the edge of the cliff and sits, legs dangling off the side. "You have many questions. Ask them," he invites.
"Well, let's start off with the alliances I mentioned. Is there a ceremony or official way to request such a thing between deities? Especially since I'm so new and you, The Red Knight, and Selune are so well established."
"You talk to them like any other and bargain it," Shaundakul explains, "There are informal agreements, formal alliances and many things in between. It is like any other thing - some may stand with you openly. Others will oppose you. The others fall in the middle, from those who it is known or suspected they may aid you if things go to far, to those who hinder you but will never make it an open war."
"Interesting. I was expecting something more... structured. In that case, what sort of alliance would you be interested in with me?"
"For now, as an ally," Shaundakul explains as he gazes out, "We share a realm, we defend each other if there are attacks against the Gates of the Moon, as does Selune."
Alyssa nods, "As part of it, I'd like to offer any of my future places of worship, that's still a novel concept to me, as a sort of way station for any of your followers. Rest, information, aid, that sort of thing."
"As would mine," Shaundakul agrees, "We are similar, we will be drawn together. Our paths are besides each other."
Alyssa smiles, "Journeys are best shared with friends. You the trailblazer and me the chronicler, perhaps? It'll grow as things go, I imagine. Do you want to do anything more formal for this than just our talking here?"
"Not yet, but soon," Shaundakul agrees, "There's time yet." He looks out over the sea as he says, "What other questions do you have, or perhaps there are questions you don't even know to ask yet."
"Both. I'm... Not in love with the idea of forming a church, but I gather that it's going to happen anyway. Any tips, or just let it happen as it will?"
"It's our purpose, Alyssa. This is not mere power." A gesture ahead, as you see countless dirt roads. So many walk them, lost - and yet the same man is always here, a guide through the confusion. "We are the guides that lead souls through life and into eternity. Our churches are our compasses and maps, all to guide souls along and to us. A church will happen, it is what you are now. No, you my guide and define the path. Learn when to intervene, when to allow events to happen. Learn to accept those you care for stepping onto Death's Road, and be there to greet them when it leads them to you."
Alyssa grunts, "I know it's inevitable. I was just hoping there was something I could do to help it along so I don't have to deal with course correction later."
"There will be rocks and burrs under your saddle," Shaundakul smiles, "You were not born like this, you will have to learn our ways. Like a child who stumbles when he first tries to walk, your mistakes are inevitable and instructory."
"Well, I'd like a bit of warning before I get another Shar after my head. In any case, what's going to happen to the demi-plane now that I'm fully into divinity? Will it become my home plane? Would you and Selune be willing to accept that since it was a gift from both of you and connected through the Gates of the Moon?"
"It will be your realm, unless you desire something else," Shaundakul notes, as he pulls out an old, weathered flute from nowhere. "As long as you stay in the Gates of the Moon, the moonlight and the paths will protect you, and the Queen of Stars is not beyond reach."
"That sounds fine. I just didn't want either of you to take issue with a new god just assuming a realm in your areas. Is there anything else you think I should know, or people I should meet? Or things I should do?"
"Many things," Shaundakul admits, "Do you wonder why we live so long, when we are in endless conflict with one another, Alyssa?"
"I've gotten a few clues. A competition?"
"A competition? No, the Competition," Shaundakul declares, "We Compete for souls and influence in Creation. To guide Creation and to strengthen our beliefs while we defeat those of those we oppose. The grandest and greatest game of Creation, played from cradle to grave."
"That sounds... Pointless, in a way. Shouldn't the will of the souls be respected instead of being poked and prodded to... what... count as points?"
"That is the entire point," Shaundakul retorts, "To give them choices in life - clerics who guide them, paladins who protect them, faiths to lead them. The reward is every soul that comes to you."
"Hmm. Maybe I'll under better once I start."

"You shall learn," Shaundakul confirms, as he hands you the flute. "It's nothing more than another talent and role to learn. Daunting until you learn it, then you will master it."
"Then, is there anything else?"
"Have you learned to properly speak yet, as a deity does?" Shaundakul asks.
Alyssa raises an eyebrow, "I'm going to say no, because no one's mentioned this yet."

What are the limitations to it? Are there wards for isolation or blocking? Is there some way of gently knocking before simply sending a message?
There are few limitations. Only wisdom - for just because you can personally contact Demogorgon does not mean you should personally contact Demogorgon.
A being unable to reply or think cannot reply, nor can ones in certain situations.

"Selune," Shaundakul calls, "Join us."
"Yes, please do! I would like to greet you in my full divinity and thank you for your hosting and protection."
The woman who sits next to you is young, nothing more than a ten year old. Her hair is long and cascades down and down, so long as to tumble towards the oceans below. She wears a white gown, her adult body changing before you, tall and youthful now.
"A remarkable, fast growth," Selune says, "As long as you stand against Shar, you will be an ally."
"Well, considering how much she's come at me, I doubt that'll change ever. Thank you for the offer. I'm glad that nothing significant is changed in that regard."
Selune extends her hand out to you, a wordless offer.
Alyssa takes it with a smile. "Thank you."
Alyssa stands up and stretches a bit, "Well, I suppose I have at least one more visit to make today and then I have to settle things here at home."
We'll touch on these matters later, but for now what's your next move?
Just a visit to The Red Knight since Jarem is now DvR 0 and I'm DvR 1. I think she'll want something a little more offical now that some of hers are working with another deity directly? If not that, then some money adventuring while hunting for info on the next seed. Or smashing that Eye in revenge.
