I've watched episode one and I can't get into it. It's...dry. Uninteresting. Unensaring.  I don't know, it doesn't seem to have the usual Key appeal, even if Kyo-Ani's artwork is gorgeous.

That's pretty much the same reaction Dune and I had. I figure I'll just wait until the HD version is broadcast and give it a few episodes, as of episode 2 they're still introducing more of the cast. (Which is probably the problem. The show seems less focused than the previous ventures so far.)

Actually as of episode 2 they've introduced the majority of the characters. Sure there are smaller characters here and there but as of episode 3 the introductory episodes are largely over based on what little I know. It should also be noted that compared to Kanon and AIR this series is far larger in scope. The game itself has two separate story arcs. The School Life arc, which is what the series is in now, and the After Story arc set ten years after the School Life arc. Both arcs are decidedly on the large side from what I've heard. To the point that fitting both arcs into twenty-four episodes, the number of episodes the series is set to run based on the dvd release which is the same number as Kanon was, is extremely questionable.

Anyways the theme of CLANNAD is family, the title itself is the Irish word for Clan/Family, and it runs thru everything in this series. As such it's important that the relationships be established and properly developed. This is one series where the character interaction more than anything else will make or break the whole thing. It may be boring at times but it's an unavoidable necessity. As for myself I'm enjoying the early episodes although the Tomoyo kick joke is starting to be run into the ground. It was fun the first few times but now it's starting to become dull and repetitive.

Anyways I'll stick with it myself but others are welcome to do what they wish. I think those that stick with the series will be in for a treat in the long run but I could very well be completely wrong.

Sincerely,
Shuten

Yeah. I would say if you really want to watch the widescreen version either wait for dvd-rips or just buy the R2, R1 if the series gets licensed which isn't as much of an impossibility as it once was given what has happened with the previous KyoAni produced Key series in the last year or so, dvds. Watching the widescreen airing on BS-i isn't really worth it with the degraded picture quality. If the picture quality was equal it would be one thing but it just isn't.

Honestly though this situation royally reeks something fierce. The TBS airing gives us the hatchet job which is 4:3 but with better quality picture but the BS-i airing gives us the whole picture so we see everything as it was meant to be seen but it looks like someone put it thru one horrendous filter. Honestly the viewers just can't win. -_-;

Shuten
