Title: Day 9A: Cruise Ship Tours
Post by: Iron Dragoon on October 22, 2014, 01:17:04 PM

Session Start: Tue Oct 21 11:33:55 2014
Session Ident: #dunes
* Now talking in #dunes
* Topic is 'Lucy(32)>Veren(27)>Moore(26)>Pepo(22)>Strange Thing(21) '
* Set by Kotono on Tue Oct 14 14:08:47
<Kotono> ------
<Kotono> > With a tip of his head to Lucy, "Almost wish I could," he says with a hint of amusement, "But no. Can't risk you being a gambit by the snakes."
<Kotono> > OOC: This is about to descend into violence, so unless any of you have something salient to say or to try and defuse this, we'll pause here and start with init next time.
<Kotono> <Veren> "And if we could prove that we are simply uninvolved persons caught in the middle?"
<Kotono> <Lucy> "Oh. Oh!" She almost jumps in place. "We are, what you call it, new? We had literally arrived the previous day! And your soldiers did helpfully kill our handlers!"
<Kotono> <Veren> "Newborns, Lucy."
<Kotono> * Pepo is now known as Ebiris
<Kotono> <Moore> "Even if we were a gambit of the snakes, which we aren't, by the way, what difference does that make to you? We don't have any intentions of returning to this city or this island. Wouldn't it be easier for both parties to just completely forget about each other and move on to more important things?" Moore asks with a smile. "I just don't think we're really worth the trouble, in the grand
<Kotono> scheme
<Kotono> <Moore> of things."
<Kotono> "Then if you're new, how'd you know the pass code?" The Purple Wind banters back, "Why are you running in the first place?"
* Veren raises an eyebrow.
<Veren> "The only side we know anything about is losing and we know nothing of your kind."
<Lucy> "A few of your comrades attacked us, perhaps out of an unfortunate misunderstanding?" Lucy suggests. "I'm afraid that I was stronger, and as a result we learnt the password. Truly, all we want is to leave. If you fight us out of a misguided belief that we hold any loyalty to the previous regime, you would only expand resources needlessly, so why bother?"
<Kotono> Squinting in the light all around you, as the bright seas glow, "Fine," he says after a moment, a door-shaped rift in space appearing. He steps back into it and vanishes, and so does the rift after a moment. OOC: Free act.
<Lucy> "Oh, good!" Lucy exclaims. "Not only orderly, but reasonably savvy as well!"
<Kotono> "Holy shit, what a wimp! All that and he runs off?" Old Kamhoff laughs at the wheel, "Yeah, you run with your fancy-ass armor and fake muscles! I bet you paid a wizard for them!"
* Veren relaxes a bit and returns his dagger to its hidden sheath.
<Moore> Moore lets out a breath he'd been holding during the tension. "Maybe we should hurry and go before something else decides to try and interfere with us?"
<Pepo> Relieved that they don't have to fight after all, Pepo goes to find that other cat and introduce himself, then maybe have a nap.
<Lucy> "Now, now," Lucy lectures the ship's captain. "He clearly knew there was nothing to be gained by his death. And his valuables would have surely been destroyed in the fight."
<Veren > "Be silent. Extra fights do not serve us well if we wish to escape."
<Kotono> Still laughing as Pepo goes off, "Sit on down," he says, as slowly the harbor and city behind you fades, smoke fading in the ever-present radiance, "I guess you're my new crew now. Isn't it awesome how that works out? I need a crew, and what appears but the perfect motley crew! So who blabbed about me in the middle of this clusterfuck?" OOC: #evildunes, Pepo.
<Lucy> Shaking her head, Lucy approaches Kamhoff. "You could say it was fate! My name is Lucy, and it is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
<Veren > "I am Veren."
<Moore> "Moore!"
<Kotono> "Fantastic," he drawls as he guides the ship along. "I'm Old Kamhoff, wizard tinker and explorer extraordinaire! It just so happens I'm short a crew and you'll fill the slots nicely."
<Lucy> "That's nice, but I require a cabin and some uninterrupted time with my research for the time being. Can that be arranged?"
* Veren imagines she means with the research materials that were plundered, but remains silent.
<Kotono> "Yeah," He says, "We're out far enough to let the wheel be for a few," he says, dusting his hands off. "C'mon down. By the way, what's with that cat that was with you. One of your familiars?"
* Veren follows, considering he's lugging Lucy's research materials around, but doesn't comment on Pepo.
<Lucy> "Oh yes! Mister Pepo is quite smart!"
<Kotono> OOC: Going to rest up some then, y'all?
<Lucy> OOC: Only after I sort out my windfall
<Veren > OOC: I'll either rest a bit or help Lucy or Moore as needed.
<Kotono> OOC: Okay. Moore?
<Moore> OOC: Sorry, had to get up a second. If they're resting I'll throw out a Healing Hymn in case anyone wants to sleep.
<Moore> OOC: Otherwise I'll just help out Lucy if she wants it. Otherwise I'll talk to Kamhoff.
<Kotono> OOC: Okay. We'll cover the research first, then rest, then talking to Kamhoff since everyone needs to do that anyway.
<Kotono> OOC: Lucy, what are you looking for in it?
<Lucy> OOC: I want to prepare a nice and useful index for future use and sort things out. Categories are: maps/information about other places; magical theories that deviate from the standard (spellpool/metamagic/cooperative magic/etc); the magic that the snake coven used to drain people; Flanagan's personal research and notes
<Lucy> OOC: If there's anything outside those categories of interest, I'll glance at it after
<Kotono> OOC: Okay. I'll post about this after session and/or tonight, so I don't leave things hanging for a bit. The next few scenes aren't going to be impacted by it much. Next up, all of you get a night's rest. Restore HP/spells/PP/ect. Note any extra means to recover, if any.
<Moore> OOC: Healing Hymn will make it 24 hours of bed rest
<Kotono> OOC: Okay, cool.
<Kotono> Breakfast is a thing. It's eaten at the wheel - Old Kamhoff drags a comfy looking chair out to sit before it, standing up to adjust course every so often. Otherwise it's a mundane meal - salted meat, dried fruits, watered down ale, preserved biscuits and oddly enough, fresh lemons. "So then, here's what's going on," Old Kamhoff says, "We're about a week away from Freeport Rock, it's due north
<Kotono> from here. I need to resupply there and then we can look at a longer journey. See, what I do is gather things mundane and strange, magical and odd. I make things from them.""
<Veren > "A useful skill."
<Lucy> "A week from a proper bath, then," Lucy muses. "Ah, whatever happened to your crew?"
<Kotono> "They fought the volcano and the volcano won," Old Kamhoff bows his head. "Anyway, the couple of survivors blamed me for not coming along with them and all sorts of upset bullshit."
<Lucy> "That hardly sounds fair! After all, the volcano is to blame, clearly."
<Veren > "They are responsible for their own fates."
<Moore> "Were you a member of Rossalund's society or just a traveler?" Moore asks.
<Kotono> "Exactly! It's not my fault that lava makes an energy resistance spell insufficient! You shouldn't have fallen in anyway!" Rolling his eyes, "Fucking desert dwarves." At this he snorts, "I have nothing to do with Rossalund, they were just the closest port of call after that mess. The volcano - Firepeak, incidentally, and it's a stupid name - is about two weeks southwest of Rossalund."
<Veren > "What were you doing there?"
<Lucy> "You introduced yourself as a wizard, didn't you?" Lucy muses. "What sort of magic are the nearest few cities use?"
<Kotono> "Looking for treasure and useful things for my tinkering," Old Kamhoff scowls as he rises to adjust the ship's course, "Speaking of, the ship's course should be good for a bit. Let's take all of you downstairs and show you my workshop."
* Veren placidly follows.
<Kotono> "Let's see. Rossalund has, or fucking had, the Coven." He makes a poof noise after, "Not a concern now. Freeport has a bunch of petty sorcerers and wizards, as well as a few churches. Rossalund never much cared for religion, or at least those medusas didn't, so Freeport Rock's the nearest location for a bunch of churches."
<Lucy> "And actual magic?"
<Kotono> "Hillmar's your best bet. It's about a month northwest of Freeport Rock. There's a few established arcane types there and an academy," he says, waving a hand. "Pretentious sorts, they have robes up their ass since they rarely go out and get practical experience."
<Lucy> "Ah, actually standardized magic that everyone can use! How lovely!"
<Veren > "We need equipment, as well."
<Lucy> "Really?"
> "We don't know what else we'll encounter. What we have served us well enough, but better equipment will only increase our chances of survival."
* Lucy shrugs. "If you feel you need it. The best equipment will surely be in the city with the strongest magical doctrine."
<Kotono> The party is lead downstairs, past where Kamhoff's cat sleeps and down another set of stairs. Here one of the bottom chambers is massive - piled high with junk far and wide. Barrels full of rocks, glass, scrap metal and other things. Rows of polished stone and fragments of oddities. Rune stones, scrolls with arcane patterns and magic circle diagrams are about. Stuffed animals of all sorts hang
<Kotono> on the walls or stand about. Containers hold moving flames, rustling rocks, gusting winds and swirling waters. There's racks of weapons normal and odd, and another for armors. One overstacked table looks to be full of alchemy equipment and goods. There's an oven built into the wall, as well as a series of glass tubes that regularly send multicolored liquids through them. There's more as you look
<Kotono> around, "You can restock in Freeport Rock," he says, "At least for basic things. Now then, welcome to my lab." he gestures about.
* Lucy drifts over to the rune stones to study them closely.
* Veren gets a bit nervous around all the magical items he can't identify, and refrains from touching anything, though he does his best to spot anything that might be useful.
<Pepo> Pepo curiously follows the group down and sniffs around a little, but doesn't jump on any of the temptingly climbable surfaces.
<Moore> Moore just flies next to Veren for now, leaving the magical stuff up to the others.
<Kotono> They're pretty complex - and not matching. It looks like a motley collection of runes from all over, tossed together. "Now then," As he goes on, Pepo can smell canine. A few moments later, a rather large, gold-yellow colored dog comes out. A golden retriever or the like. It's visibly old, with white along the muzzle. It comes up to Old Kamhoff, and he pauses to pet its head. "Good dog," he
<Kotono> murmurs, as it gives Pepo a long look. "His name's Macaron."
<Kotono> "Anyway," Old Kamhoff goes on, "I build and create things, things I share with my crew," he goes on, "But I need materials. Anything you can think of, from mundane supplies, to random things you recover from islands, to magical items."
* Veren moves to pet the dog as way of greeting.
<Kotono> The dog pants a little as he's petted.
* Lucy picks one at random to observe and divine its meaning, asking, "The crew, then, supplies you with such materials during stops to volcanos and the like?"
<Pepo> Pepo looks back, before dismissing the elderly dog as a threat. Really he feels a bit sorry for it, age being kind to no one. Curiosity satisfied, he goes back upstairs to nap some more.
<Kotono> OOC: K:A, Lucy.
<Lucy> roll 1d20+16
* Hatbot --> "Lucy rolls 1d20+16 and gets 25." 12 [1d20=9]
<Kotono> It's the rune symbol Iagazaz. It represents thunder. Useful in conjunction with other runes that mean the same thing. "Exactly. Hell, even if you see a shiny rock on the ground that catches your eye, take it and give it to me. I never know what's useful until I work with it. So," Glancing to them, "Got anything you'd like to toss in?"
* Veren pauses for a moment before reaching into his bag and producing the corked bottle and stone coins.
<Lucy> "Perhaps we can start by displaying the money we came by and seeing how the different standards compare?"
<Kotono> "Ah yes, coins. The problems of any traveler," Old Kamhoff scoffs, "Fucking money exchangers. Let me see." OOC: Are you handing those over, Iddy?
<Veren > OOC: Mainly just letting him inspect. If it's something he can use, sure I guess.
<Kotono> "I can use these, I can use these," he says, taking them. "Now what coins do you have?"
* Veren decides to keep an eye on this man, as turning over possessions to someone they know nearly nothing about might be unwise.
* Veren decides to produce a handful of coins for identification, but keeps the majority in storage.
<Kotono> OOC: If you want all those coins identified, tell me which ones you have on hand.
> OOC: I honestly don't really know. Just whatever we woke up with and what was looted from the pirates. "7 copper pieces, 4 silver pieces, 6 electrum pieces, 2 brass pieces, 4 gold pieces. What the brass and electrum coins are worth is anyone's guess."
<Kotono> OOC: Brass is worth .5 gold per coin and electrum is worth .25 gold per coin. This has sort of stalled out a bit, so anything else you want to do here or are y'all ready to move along?
<Veren > OOC: Not unless he has anything readily available in the armor or weapons department that might be of use.
<Lucy> OOC: Let's move on, I was thinking the same thing
<Kotono> A few hours pass. Everyone's on deck, eating a lunch that's rather similar to breakfast. Naturally, it's then that the ship shakes like a leaf, as if being tossed about from below.
* Veren tries to keep his balance and looks out across the water for any danger.
<Pepo> "Mrroow!" Pepo vocalizes unhappily, scrabbling around on the deck to secure himself with his claws.
* Lucy looks distinctly unhappy herself, looking towards Kamhoff for guidance.
<Moore> Moore is glad he's still flying!
<Kotono> "Ah HELL," Old Kamhoff mutters darkly, "Here we go!" Anything more is lost, as the ship shakes like a leaf! OOC: Acrobatics checks for all except Moore, who is a flier and flying.
<Kotono> roll 1d20+2 Old Kamhoff
* Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+2 Old Kamhoff and gets 3." 12 [1d20=1]
<Veren > roll 1d20+10 Acrobatics
* Hatbot --> "Veren rolls 1d20+10 Acrobatics and gets 23." 12 [1d20=13]
<Pepo> roll 1d20+19
* Hatbot --> "Pepo rolls 1d20+19 and gets 25." 12 [1d20=6]
<Lucy> roll 1d20+12
* Hatbot --> "Lucy rolls 1d20+12 and gets 31." 12 [1d20=19]
<Kotono> roll 1d6 Kamhoff only ow
* Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d6 Kamhoff only ow and gets 4." 12 [1d6=4]
<Kotono> The party is nimble enough to stay up, save for Kamhoff. He slips and flips up, going end over end before doing a face plant into the ground. He lies there and twitches, groaning, "Fuuuuuuck!" From the side of the ship, 60ft away from all of you, comes a sphere of light. It's got to be a few dozen feet in diameter if not more, glowing with the same luminance as the ocean. "Sea...Light sea barnacle!"
<Kotono> Kamhoff calls, "Get it before it cooks you alive with light blasts, like scorching rays! You'll cook like an egg in a frying pan." OOC: Init here.
<Kotono> roll 1d20+6 Kamhoff
* Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+6 Kamhoff and gets 10." 12 [1d20=4]
<Pepo> roll 1d20+6+8
* Hatbot --> "Pepo rolls 1d20+6+8 and gets 19." 12 [1d20=5]
<Kotono> roll 1d20+9 LSB
* Hatbot --> "Kotono rolls 1d20+9 LSB and gets 12." 12 [1d20=3]
* Kotono changes topic to 'Pepo(19)>LSB(12)>Kamhoff(10) '
<Lucy> roll 1d20+4+8
* Hatbot --> "Lucy rolls 1d20+4+8 and gets 28." 12 [1d20=16]
* Kotono changes topic to 'Lucy(28)>Pepo(19)>LSB(12)>Kamhoff(10) '
<Moore> roll 1d20+13
* Hatbot --> "Moore rolls 1d20+13 and gets 21." 12 [1d20=8]
* Kotono changes topic to 'Lucy(28)>Moore(21)>Pepo(19)>LSB(12)>Kamhoff(10) '
<Lucy> "A what?" Lucy asks, blinking behind her veil. "How does it die?"
<Veren > roll 1d20+4+8 Init
* Hatbot --> "Veren rolls 1d20+4+8 Init and gets 21." 12 [1d20=9]
* Kotono changes topic to 'Lucy(28)>Veren=Moore(21)>Pepo(19)>LSB(12)>Kamhoff(10) '
<Kotono> OOC: Open Lucy.
<Kotono> "The same way anything else does! Hit it hard with anything but fire," Kamhoff retorts.
<Lucy> That works! She kisses her fingertips, and then throws out her arm towards the sphere of light as missiles formed of magic assault it in quick succession!
<Lucy> roll 4d4+4
* Hatbot --> "Lucy rolls 4d4+4 and gets 10." 12 [4d4=1, 3, 1, 1]
<Lucy> roll 4d4+4 quick
* Hatbot --> "Lucy rolls 4d4+4 quick and gets 13." 12 [4d4=3, 2, 1, 3]
<Kotono> A double barrage of missiles slam into the floating sphere. It vibrates all over, changing size rapidly, before stabilizing. OOC: We'll pause there since Iddy's up up and away.
