<Kotono> > Thus Lucy makes the summons. They go out - and in seconds they're torn apart. Burned, frozen, scald, shocked and shook apart. The backlash of pain from it is enough to make Lucy shudder.
<Kotono> <Lucy> "The walls eat ghosts," Lucy says, a disturbed expression upon her face. "Good to know. Ah, to hell with it!" She retraces her steps to the central area and snaps her fingers; this time, the summons come for two shadowy wolves, each of which dashes into a different direction with explicit orders to stop and paw at the wall if they find anything of note or just scent something. She
<Kotono> yells
<Kotono> <Lucy> for Jetina to follow the one heading back north, while she goes along with the wolf headed for the spot she appeared in this strange place.
<Kotono> > Ironically, it's at where Lucy started that she finds something. The wolf paws at a section of the wall, sniffing away.
<Kotono> * Lucy peers at it!

<Kotono> <Serith> Lucy roll for Serith < 33 > [d20=10]
<Kotono> Oh. It's quite well hidden, by there's a door in the wall. Blinking, Lucy scowls. How did she ever miss this? It's obvious now that she looks at it. Just sitting there!
<Lucy> "Go bring Jetina here," Lucy commands the wolf, poking at the door.
<Kotono> The wolf goes off and does that. Jetina returns, giving the door a look. "Oh, you found a hidden door!"
<Lucy> "Yes," Lucy deadpans. "This place is mocking us, but I'll take it if it's some sort of trial the Light created for us. Let's go?"
<Kotono> The door opens. Ahead is a narrow and long room. The walls and floor are studded with jagged blades, making going through almost impossible. But lying ahead in the room is a book. It looks like a spell book with a white cover. It floats in the air, just slightly off the ground.
<Lucy> Her ability to see the invisible would help with such traps, so Lucy first focuses on what magic is within the room and upon the book itself!
<Lucy> roll 1d20+18 spellcraft
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 32 > 12 [d20=14]
<Kotono> The room isn't magical but the book is. The book's cover is trapped - touch it and all the blades will come forth to skewer you. The pages are protected against damage, including that of the blades.
<Lucy> "Trap," Lucy muses, nevertheless flying to take a look around the room. There is no need to approach the book; rather, she wants to see if any obvious-after-the-fact doors present themselves in her circle of the room.
<Kotono> It's hard to get far - the blades are sorted in such a way that flying's tricky. But still...OOC: Perception.
* Lucy assumes a more compact form as she flies around!
<Lucy> OOC: Small-sized Lucy is a go
<Lucy> roll 1d20+23 perception
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 27 > 12 [d20=4]
<Kotono> Lucy doesn't find any noteworthy doors or anything hidden, though her flying is largely curtailed due to the blades.
<Lucy> Upon returning, she resumes her usual size. "So," she tells Jetina, "if we grab the book the knives will try to kill us. But maybe it will set something else in motion as well. What do you think about summoning something to do it for us and then shutting the door closed?"
<Kotono> "It sounds like the wisest course of action," Jetina says after some consideration, "Better than doing it ourselves."
<Lucy> "I am relieved beyond measure that you did not volunteer." Lucy mentally flips through her possibilities for a summons. "Be ready to slam the door shut. I will focus on grabbing the book."
<Lucy> And with that, she summons several fiendish hawks that are commanded to fly into the room! There, one is to grab the book and the rest to deflect the knives that would inevitably come. And as they go, she summons another flock, this time with orders to go in as soon as the book is seized and make sure to deliver it safely to her if it is dropped midway.
<Lucy> roll 1d4+1 hawk group 1
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 2 > 12 [d4=1]
<Lucy> roll 1d4+1 hawk group 2
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 2 > 12 [d4=1]
<Kotono> OOC: How are they going to deflect the knives, precisely?
<Lucy> OOC: I was hoping opposed attack checks, but they can die heroically for the cause too
<Kotono> OOC: Okay. Too many knives to be meaningful here, but them being there will soak some. More coming.
<Lucy> OOC: Unless it's a huge room they just need to toss the book far enough for me to catch it
<Kotono> OOC: Have 'em make a dex check then, say.
<Lucy> roll 4#1d20+3 go forth, my hawks!
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 17, 9, 16, 17 >
<Kotono> There is a terrible carnage before you as blades simply shred the hawks asunder. The book is tossed somewhat, ending up about halfway between where it was and the door. 'course, there's blades everywhere now, too.
<Lucy> "Can I summon a mummy now?"
<Lucy> roll 1d20+16 k:e
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 24 > 12 [d20=8]
<Kotono> Hmmm. The blades look like iron, but they aren't quite right. The metal's too bright, too sharp. It reminds you of mithral, but isn't that either. Whatever it is, it looks painfully, lethally sharp. You'd imagine they're sharp enough to make most damage reduction irrelevant. It's really a waste that such fine metal and blades are being used here.
<Kotono> Jetina shakes her head, "We really shouldn't. That sort of magic's just wrong, as Qupan teaches," Jetina says.
<Lucy> "It's the only thing that won't be harmed by those blades," Lucy points out. Still, for now she summons a massive bat of shadow to try and bring the book over.
<Lucy> OOC: Fiendish dire bat, DR 5/magic
<Lucy> OOC: I'll have it appear right above the book and try to come to me/toss it over when it no longer can.
<Kotono> OOC: Dex check again.
<Lucy> roll 1d20+6 make me proud, demon bat!
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 14 > 12 [d20=8]
<Kotono> Got it! The bat throws it a moment before being shredded like cheap wheat. The book is at Lucy's feet!
<Lucy> "Close the door," she tells Jetina, picking it up after receiving acknowledgement!
<Kotono> Jetina winces and looks away, "Qupan watch over that brave bat," she murmurs, closing the door.
<Kotono> The book is held. It's a big old spellbook from the look of it, though there's no title on it or anything like that.
<Lucy> "I wish we'd gotten a few of the knives as well. Maybe later," Lucy muses, before heading off. Forty feet away should be good enough. Then, she looks at the book without truly reading anything, and goes over the pages with Read Magic. If any trapped runes exist, that shouldn't trigger them and she'll have a chance to find out by the magic's signature.
<Kotono> OOC: Link me to read magic?
<Lucy> OOC: Sure http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/readMagic.htm
<Kotono> OOC: Int check. Good luck.
<Lucy> roll 1d20+5
<Serith > Lucy roll for Serith < 23 > 12 [d20=18]
<Kotono> The book is...is...ugh! Lucy's mind rejects it. No. She draws away from madness. Two things are seared into her mind: 1. Pepo is home at last. 2. STOP LOOKING. Of a volition that is not her own, Lucy hurls the spellbook away. She falls to her knees, shaking uncontrollably.
<Lucy> "What have they done to this innocent spellbook?!" she cries out in horror, crawling away from the book.
<Kotono> Jetina says something - but it stops. Reality shatters around Lucy, breaking apart like a cheap carnival mirror. She barely has a moment before - (More)
<Kotono> OOC: #dunes in a bit, I'll prompt you when you stir.
