Title: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)
Post by: Anastasia on November 01, 2015, 11:12:20 PM
[21:16] <Kotono> The door is sealed. It only opens to creatures with the devil subtype. It could be forced but it would be obviously noisy, or proper Use Magic Device could fool it.
[21:16] * Muirfinn explains such to Lief.
[21:16] * Lief does his best!
[21:17] <Lief> roll d20+33 UMD
[21:17] <Serith> Lief roll for Serith < 44 > [d20=11]
[21:23] <Ithea> ooc: Can I help with the check at all? I figure not something I roll against him and see who rolls best, but not sure if I can assist?
[21:23] <Ithea> roll d20+28 UMD assist (if yes, otherwise ignore)
[21:23] <Serith> Ithea roll for Serith < 46 > [d20=18]
[21:23] <Kotono> OOC: Was a sec, sorry. Can you aid another with UMD? Checkr eal quick.
[21:24] <Ithea> ooc: I wasn't sure, that's why I was asking! But I'll check
[21:25] <Ithea> ooc: don't see anything in SRD, just says you can make same kind of skill check to aid another. It says 'In many cases, a character's help won't be beneficial, or only a limited number of characters can help at once.' so I think it's DM call
[21:25] <Ithea> ooc: So I turn it back to you once more!
[21:27] <Kotono> OOC: That's fine, we'll just roll with it.
[21:28] <Kotono> Using his skills, Lief is able to project onto the door. He's fairly sure it should work for them now.
[21:29] <Lief> "I think I got it!"
[21:29] * Lief attempts to open the door!
[21:29] <Muirfinn> "Well done!"

The door opens with a loud creak. The sound fills the air, disrupting the serene silence of the Astral. A fairly large room lies ahead, a rectangle 20ft long and 30ft wide, as well as 15ft tall. The walls are the same obsidian as the building is perched on. Regular clusters of 9 symmetrical runes are spaced out on the walls, shedding a red light that casts everything in a light akin to that of cooling lava.

Stand there is a squad of nine barbazu, 5ft ahead and in a 3 by 3 square. In the air directly above them is a squad of 9 erinyes. Glaives are at the ready and bows nocked with arrows. One of the erinyes glares at them and barks, "Identify yourself!"

OOC: Unfortunately, it seems the devils are wise enough not to trust a mere two barbazu on guard duty. This isn't roll initiative time quite yet, so discussion is possible. If you go hostile, I'll call for initiative rather than allowing a hostile action to go through. You have no chance of surprising them and can at best hope for reacting faster via initiative. Conversely, they've squandered any chance for a surprise by talking instead of firing blindly on the door opening.

Also, if someone can summarize any relevant spells in effect from #thecauldron, that would be helpful for all of us. Include those in the info summary of your posts since it's relevant.

I'm not posting anything yet. My strongest social skill here is Diplomacy, which even at my huge modifier probably won't get us out of combat here. I'll leave this up to Lief, for a Bluff setup. Instead, posting current stats.

The Cauldron: I have nothing posted by us from here. I'll need to take castings from #d.

Active Spells

Muirfinn: Camouflage, Primal Instinct, Superior Resistance
Lief: Nondetection
Ithea: No Active Effects

Keep your active effects updated at the bottom of each post, update as needed.

Okay, cool. So noted. That puts the ball in your court unless you wanna try something, Ithea. Sylvie has a +45 mod to bluff (before factotum shenanigans) as well, should Lief wish to demure.

Sylvie DOES have 21, which makes any bluff extremely difficult for her to pull off. Not impossible, but she has to think fast and hope no one pokes even the slightest hole in it that she has to answer truthfully.

OOC: I have no issues with a bluff set up. Sylvie could assist. I'm not sure what roll for relevant information I'd need to make a believable bluff for some kind of infiltration team reporting back, if any. I also probably won't be able to post again until tomorrow.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Anastasia on November 02, 2015, 01:14:52 PM
Knowledge (Planes) could help there. Since you're not able to post today, I'll check your sheet and make the roll. Or I would, but you don't have any ranks in it.

So you can try that blind or one of you can try something else.

Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Iron Dragoon on November 02, 2015, 06:19:40 PM
OOC: LUNCH POST! Could Sylvie or Ithea, who do have ranks in K:Planes head it and use my huge bluff mod to assist, or would that not be effective/efficient?
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Merc on November 02, 2015, 08:54:51 PM
OOC: I don't believe we could help, as we'd then have to whisper the info to you to make use of it. Either you or Sylvie would have to make a bluff attempt on your own. While we wait for you, have a map.

Yeah, no chance or situation to pass the info on. You need to react and don't have a chance to do anything else.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Iron Dragoon on November 03, 2015, 12:37:49 PM
OOC: Okay, I'll kick it off. Trying to bluff that we're an infiltration team returning.

Lief glares right back at the Erinyes that spoke. "Infiltration team returning to report, as ordered. Who are *you?* And put that damn bow away. You should have been expecting us, but you obviously weren't. Who fucked up and when do I get to rip their hide off?"

Spoiler: ShowHide

OOC: Nondetection in effect, targeted one of the barbazu outside.
AC: 33, HP: 358
Damage reduction 10/cold iron, damage reduction 5/-,spell resistance 38, improved uncanny dodge, improved evasion

Okay, make a bluff check and post the results here. ...but since you don't seem to be around, I'll roll it for you.

> roll 1d20+33
<Serith> Kotono roll for Serith < 43 > [d20=10]

The bows don't lower, the glaives stay raised and ready to strike the party down. "Access code," he demands, glaring right at Lief.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Iron Dragoon on November 03, 2015, 03:08:19 PM
OOC: Okay, I really don't know what I can do to figure out an access code, or even get a hint for it. So instead of making another bluff check completely blind, I'm going to hold off and see if anyone else has suggestions/ideas for it.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Anastasia on November 03, 2015, 03:21:02 PM
> roll 1d20+54 K:P
<Serith> Kotono roll for Serith < 60 > [d20=6]

"Of course we don't know the access code," Sylvie scowls, "We just got here. What do you think will happen if you attack us?"

> roll 1d20+67 (+22 inspiration, 11/12 left for encounter)
<Serith> Kotono roll for Serith < 73 > [d20=6]

She's trying to bluff within the bounds 21 sets for her. Nothing she said here is a lie.

There's a long stare-off between the party and the devils. Tension seems to crackle in the room, long moments of absolute silence passing. Sylvie pauses only to crack her knuckles, the sound disrupting the silence of the stand off.

> roll 1d20+42 (+22 inspiration 10/12 left for encounter) intimidate
<Serith> Kotono roll for Serith < 55 > [d20=13]

Sylvie's running with it and trying to set up an intimidate. Anyone else is free to chip in with their own intimidate roll or try and turn it into another direction.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold
Post by: Iron Dragoon on November 03, 2015, 03:36:16 PM
OOC: Don't have intimidate, but I've got a bow and bluff!

Lief grins at Sylvie's actions and draws his own bow, taking aim at the devil Sylvie's focused on.

"I'd listen to her. She tends to not leave much more than paste. She takes her time with it, too."

> roll 1d20+33 Bluff

OOC: Lending my aid where I can without bluffing!

Muirfinn closes his eyes and huffs out his nose, channeling his frustration with his own failures earlier. "Look, we all have more important fights to pick, and fighting here will only get the lot of us into trouble."  He glares at the group and the devils meaningfully. "All of us."

Diabolical eyes go from Sylvie to Lief and finally to Muirfinn. Finally, he says in Infernal, "Yaromos, get the Sub-Commander." One of the erinyes in the back flies off and away, down a hall mostly hidden by the other devils. It gives you time - not much, for within a minute the erinyes returns with a gelugon. A familiar creature to the party, one carrying the spear typical of the caste. It walks around them and to the party...

> roll 1d20+23 knowledge check
<Serith> Kotono roll for Serith < 26 > [d20=3]

The creature hisses, mandibles clacking together as it raises its spear up, "AURORA!"

Things that don't help sneaking by? Being famous anti-devil terrorists known to Baator. Roll init here, everyone.

Gelugon is immune, I usually run them as cold immune. Always thought that was a rules oversight for ice devils to not be immune to cold.

With a single word of power, frigid cold envelops the squads before him. Two barbazu are frozen solid, nothing but icy statues that buffer the worst of it from the others. An erinyes is likewise frozen, crashing to the ground and smashing into bits of bloody ice. As the devils are frozen solid...

Ithea and Lief are up. Go.

As a reminder, make sure to include the information (hit points, armor class, ect) that was requested back in nagging's post examples. Yuth, if you can edit that into your post declaring the cone of cold while I deal with other stuff, that would be great.

We don't use crit fails, so that 1 is just a plain miss. However, all of the others hit. Roll damage.

In the future, feel free to roll damage and include that if you think you hit. At worst, I tell you that you're wrong and the damage roll is ignored.

Spellstoring property is ignored, as that overkills the gelugon. They're there, but it's a matter of overkill rather than anything relevant. Ow.

Lief floats up and positions, the silence of the Astral perfect for his concentration. In that moment he's in the zone, snapping off arrows at the devil oppressor before it can even react. The insectoid devil is struck four times, arrows going right through its heart one after another. It topples back like a broken doll, mandibles clacking loudly together as it screams, a sound like rustling insect legs. It dissolves before it hits the ground, becoming fragments of melting black ice under the arrow storm.

It was a gelugon 16//fighter 16, a powerful foe that's still well below the party's might. Ithea, you're up. New initiative is:

Sylvie (44) > Muirfinn (40) > Ithea=Lief (39) > Barbazu Squad (23) >  Erinyes Squad (6)
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold

Ithea raises her glaive and lightning arcs through her hands and the weapon's shaft as chains of lightning explode out the blade and into the devils as she oversees the damage, letting most of the electrical damage concentrate itself on one of the far back erinyes and jumping from there onto the remaining erinyes and the barbazu.

Then immediately after, she follows up with a series of swipes from her glaive, slashing away at the remaining survivors as needed.

"OOC: Actions/Combat Rolls": ShowHide

Ithea is using quick cast to cast chain lightning, focused on one of the back erinyes. She can target all of the other devils as secondary targets.

Chain Lightning: Spell Resistance / Reflex DC 26 (Pass = Half Damage) / Secondary targets take half damage of main target.

[21:15] <Serith> Sailor_Mercury roll for Serith < 47 > [d20=5]

Following that, she's full attacking against survivors. Focus will be three of the Erinyes in the middle row (she can't quite get to the back row due to 3D distance multiplication. Curses!) and a Barbazu from middle row. If something in the middle row is dead, she'll target stuff on the front row.

Dune, please note Ithea has cleave, if it matters.

The flash-frozen devils and the slain gelugon leave the remainder stunned for the split-second they have to react. The party falls on them like the wrath of the heavens, manifesting in Ithea's lightning spell. The erinyes are decimated by it, the spreading chain lightning causing them shudder and convulse, falling and dissolving into oblivion. Amid this, the barbazu shuddering and barely holding their ground, Ithea springs in. A slash there, an arm severed. A stab follows, a devil impaled. A third and a fourth, swings that cut through devil flesh as easily as paper. Lightning is joined by holy radiance, exploding around Ithea and the falling devils. In mere moments all that is left is the empty room before them.

As seen before, there is a single door leading on. It is a normal looking door, carved of the same black obsidian as the walls of the fortress. However, you can feel it rapidly getting warmer, going from neutral to warm to hot in a mere second. The heat is rising - fast!

Free act, the enemies were wiped out. Good security, but merely good security doesn't stop heroes of your stature. Act.

"What did you expect from barbazu and erinyes?" Ithea comments with a roll of her eyes.

She briefly eyes the corpses before shrugging. Unlikely that they have anything worthwhile to spend even seconds for a quick search probably.

"Well, they know we're here. Guess we can forgo the sneaking around and jump to the storming the castle part," Ithea notes, as she steps further into the room and starts moving towards the door on the other side, examining it.

Turning to the pixie, "Any traps, Lief?" she asks before she does her best to open it.

Lief can tell the door isn't trapped, strictly speaking. Nothing so crude. It's simply rigged up not to open under certain circumstances. Lief lacks the grounding in spellcraft to fully analyze it, but he can tell it's tied to the runes and rising temperature. Which is rising past a hot summer day rapidly, becoming painful and uncomfortable.

The room is starting to shimmer with heat as it becomes rapidly intolerable. It's becoming hot enough to burn flesh already, enough to boil water. Fortunately, Lief can tell that it might be possible to disable the magical trap on the door and open it.

Meanwhile, Sylvie grimaces at the heat, "Ithea, resist energy? They might have something practical like a key," she agrees, going to check that.

"That'd be a very poor defense if they just carry the key on them, but sure, Sylvie, why don't you humor Lief while I handle the heat," Ithea says, casting Resist Energy on the four of them to protect them from fire. Won't help permanently, but will at least protect against some of the damage.

I honestly forgot about that, so carry on.

As Muirfinn takes a more draconic form, the heat washing off him, Lief concentrates on the lock. It's hard to at first, but the pain is stopped by Ithea's protective spell. He's able to do his job with clarity of mind, working on the locked door. But he's not able to do it this time, but nor does he make it worse.

As Lief works, "Nothing worthwhile," Sylvie gets up from checking over the dropped equipment, "Standard hell-forged equipment."

Meanwhile, Lief works away. He's able to force the door open, swinging it aside. Ahead is pure flame - whatever's ahead is filled with a massive, blue-white fire that sheds enough heat to physically knock Lief back. Sylvie holds her crossed arms up over her face, turning away from the door, "I think we need to do something more than ignoring it with protections!"

Muirfinn can tell the flames are indeed magical. Super-hot but tolerable to devils. It's a powerful enchantment but one that could be dispelled. Going through is unwise, since it'll likely be strong enough to penetrate your protections, not to manage making sight impossibe.

Calling on the Weave to unravel, Muirfinn masterfully undoes the magic before him. The blue-white flames unravel like string pulled apart, though the ambient heat still continues to rise. Ahead lies two hallways going to the north, one to the northeast and one to the northwest. Both are tall and wide, going ahead 30ft to doors on each end.

"Of course, they can't label a thing," Sylvie hurries along, "Whoever did the defenses here was a paranoid devil, alright."

Ithea's able to put a few pieces together here. The paranoia of the design and defenses are one thing. The sheer perfection of the hall and symmetry is another. It points to an odd thing - these are the hallmarks of the Lord of the Seventh, Beezlebub. But by all rights, this should be an operation under the Lord of the First, Bel. The two don't like each other either, so why is a design like this in a place like here?

Never doubt an epic factotum's ability to completely destroy skill checks.

Muirfinn thinks a moment. That information checks out to him. But why would Beezlebub be interfering with Bel's duties? There's a few possibilities. This station has been infiltrated or a greater authority (Asmodeus) ordered it to be so are the most likely possibilities.

Sylvie meanwhile hums at that, grimacing as the heat continues to rise. "Could be," she follows with Ithea to the left, "Bel's regime's been under fire, look at what happened to Abigor." But her words are cut off as more heat buffets the party.

3 more fire damage to all but Muirfinn. This isn't enough to warrant a Concentration check, as you'll auto pass it.

But Ithea is able to work past the burning pain, ignoring the scorching of her skin, slowly progressing. She thinks the runes could be dispelled, but you'd need to find the source of them. Studying them, you can tell they're just extensions of the main source of the enchantment - which, interestingly, you can follow and tell it's somewhere past the door to the right. Once there, you could dispel it or perhaps UMD it or disable device, it'll depend on how exactly its set up.

"Look," Sylvie calls as she grimaces, skin reddening, "We need to move or fall back, before we end up baked alive."

"Maybe not. The source of the runic enchantment seems to be on the other side of the door on the right hallway. If we get to it, we can disable or dispel it. Failing that though, we definitely should retreat then," Ithea explains her findings as she starts backtracking to the other hallway, casting a disintegrate at the right door as it comes into view, deciding not to waste any time on it.

OOC: since int-based speed at the moment, should easily be able to reach the right door even going back down the left hall and then down the right hall.

Between Muirfinn's spell and Ithea's disintegration, the door disintegrates, even as the party is basted in heat. As you sizzle, you see ahead. Pure, pitch black darkness that Ithea and Lief can't see through. However, Muirfin's true seeing allows him to see through. This room is full of runes like the previous room, as well as silver orbs that hang in the air. They float a few feet off the ground and sizzle in the heat. But that's not the problem. The problem is that there are a dozen erinyes standing there, bows ready.

At the same time Sylvie's eyes widen, "Look-" she begins, before waves of greasy, sickening darkness envelope the party, save for Lief, who is still hanging back.

Ithea eyes the silver orbs, giving them a quick examination to identify if they're the source of the runes' heating enchantment and if a good burst of lightning handled the right way could shock them into lightening the heat output. After making a quick decision based on her analysis, she shoots aims the head of her glaive at the erinyes squad and fires a chain lightning spell, letting the spell jump from erinyes to erinyes, and depending on her finding, towards the silver orbs as well. On the other hand, if her findings say to leave the orbs alone until the erinyes are dead, then that's what she'll do.

OOC: Skill checks to decide if attacking the orbs is a good idea and if so, controlling effect to lower heat or at least not increasing more.

Ithea studies the orbs, momentarily ignoring the carnage that erupts around the party. The orbs aren't tied to the rising heat at all. Whatever is lies further down this way. In any case, the orbs are little magical clusters, ready to discharge when a set condition is reached. In this case, each orb is keyed to a spell that will create a large amount of lava in the room. The condition for setting them off is a non-devil being in the room for 1 round. One can note Sylvie's already in the room.

Studying the orbs is a standard action. Chain lightning is a swift action thanks to the Astral's auto-quickening.

> roll 1d20+14 Erinyes squad
<Serith> Kozzz roll for Serith < 21 > [d20=7]

The blast of lightning hits one erinyes and fries it like an overcooked egg, smaller bolts ravaging the rest. Several fall and others are are spasming from it, the enemy in disarray but not down.

Muirfinn.

ooc: Given the information from the skill checks, can it be assumed that the chain lightning also targets the orbs? Note that in above post, Ithea was intending to target the orbs along with the erinyes if there was no indication that doing so was bad, and nothing in your description seems to have said 'leave orbs alone'.

ooc: She should be able to target some/all (not sure how many orbs there are), since chain lightning can hit up to 20 secondary targets and there should be 9 erinyes (12 erinyes originally, minus main target and minus two dead by Sylvie's hands)

"Those orbs will summon lava into the room soon if we don't disable them!" Ithea warns the others, hoping the warning can help them react if the worst happens. "If we can't disable them in time, be ready to get out of the room and avoid the lava somehow!"

ooc: Also, forgot astral does auto-quicken, so Ithea shouldn't have used up a quick cast in the last fight. Reminder for self for next time I update spoiler block

Certainly so.

As the erinyes stumble and fall, lightning crackles amid the orbs. A few shudder and break, smoking as they fall - but there's still more. Perhaps four or five left, hovering in the back.

Returning into dragon form, Muirfinn dives into the decimated erinyes. The few who are not down are torn asunder by claw and teeth, becoming naught but mist and smoke on the still air of the Astral Plane. The foes are slain, yet a handful of orbs remain in the back. The darkness of the room continues to cloak all, save for those with magically enhanced sight.

Init order is: Sylvie(41) > Ithea(34) > Muirfinn(26) > Lief (23) > Environmental Damage (Heat) (0)

Small mistake that I just didn't catch for whatever reason, despite having it mind: There's magical darkness in the room that prevents you from seeing, Ithea. Sylvie and Muirfinn have true seeing so they bypass it, but you don't. Since it's already done and I don't want to slow this down any further, I'll give you a pass on it this time. We'll say the light of Sylvie's bodyfeeder crit flashed a moment and you capitalized on it.

What I'll do in the future is make sure to include conditions like that in bold text at the top of my posts. This one's getting chalked up to getting used to how post-gaming runs, since I'm still used to IRC. On IRC, I would've kept a note in the buffer so I wouldn't forget. Here I meant to remember and forgot since I didn't have that.

No enemy but the orbs, but they are a concern and on an unclear timer. Lief, go. As the above so clearly notes, you can't actually see into the room.

Lief is up. Go.

Conditions: Ongoing heat damage (10d6 a round), astral flight (10ft speed per point of Intelligence, perfect maneuverability), automatic spell quickening (spells are automatically quickened), timelessness (time does not pass normally, creatures do not age/hunger/thirst, items do not decay, wounds do not heal without magic).

These will be included as a header to my posts now, so there isn't a problem with anyone forgetting them.

Lief whips out one of his Afina-created scrolls, throwing all the power he has into making it work. The words burst into fire as the scroll crumbles to ash, the darkness collapsing before them. Ithea and Lief can see into the room now. You can see there's two doors on the back wall, behind the last of the orbs.

Under the frozen assault, the orbs crackle with cold. Great gouts of steam come from them as they're cracked like eggs, falling to the ground. They're down, no lava coming from them. At the same time, you can hear the sliding of metal. Along the roof little slits open up, the glitter of red-hued arrow heads as murder holes are revealed. Sylvie looks up, "Oghma damn it!" she mutters, "Above us!"

The orbs acted after the next turn of the creature that triggered them. Murder holes are joining init, which is:

Sylvie(41) > Ithea(34) > Muirfinn(26) > Murder Holes (25) > Lief (23) > Environmental Damage (Heat) (0)

Spellcraft is relevant here and you can't crit objects. You'd also need a crit confirmation check if you could, but that's academic.

Studying the runes further, Ithea can discern that the right door leads on towards the source of the heat. The door crumbles to dust, revealing a stairway winding down.

A cry comes from Lief as he's slammed down onto the ground, gravity pinning him there. It's hard to even move is head slightly, let alone stand. Muirfinn is slammed down just like Lief, barely able to move his hands, let alone his head or body. He's pinned hard by the gravity, as suddenly a wall of ice forms, separating the three from Sylvie. A split second later...

No damage since she made both Ref saves.

Sylvie's voice can still be heard, muffled by the icy barrier. "Back attack!"

Initiative here. None of you can see what's up since there's a wall of ice taking the place of the disintegrated door. Lief and Muirfinn, you can't move due to the gravity, but you can make a Strength check each round to overcome it.

Open Ithea. The wall of ice stops you from seeing anything of what's going on. Ahead is the hall and the stairs going down, all heavy with unnatural gravity. Notably, the Astral's flying property is suppressed in the hallway due to the gravity, though normal means of flying can still fly.

Ithea flings another disintegrate at the wall, grumbling under her breath as she does so. Then she attempts to aid Lief and Muirfinn with the gravity.

OOC: Posting disintegrate rolls as the quickened spell action. Not sure if I just roll strength or what to help the two out with their own troubles. If I can't help them, I'll probably just keep moving forward and let Sylvie drag the devils in or have her come in and Muirfinn/Lief lock them out.

A quick blast of magic dissolves the wall of ice before you, turned into dust. As you go to help Lief, you can see three figures. Three gelugons in the entrance to the chamber, flanking the party from behind.

Lief, you're up. Go.

With a great deal of effort and struggle, Lief stands up. He's able to function despite the crushing gravity, weakened but not down.

That was a move action. You can take the rest of your turn normally -a  standard action and a swift action. Note that spells and SLAs are automatically quickened in the Astral.

The swarm of arrows flies true, one in each eye of the first gelugon. The insect-like eyes shatter like glass instead of popping like flesh, as a third goes through the throat of the devil. It gasps and stumbles - just in time for the last arrow to go right into its forehead, all the way through and out. The devil dissolves into melting black ice, dead.

Sylvie whistles lowly, a sound that carries in the burning air. "You know what? I'm tired of devils already." She withdraws a book from nowhere, opening it up and reading three otherworldly, powerful words from it.

Conditions: Ongoing heat damage (10d6 a round), heavy gravity (-2 to Balance, Climb, Jump, Ride, Swim and Tumble checks, -2 to attack rolls, ranged weapon ranged halved, falling damage increased to 1d10 per 10ft), astral flight (10ft speed per point of Intelligence, perfect maneuverability), automatic spell quickening (spells are automatically quickened), timelessness (time does not pass normally, creatures do not age/hunger/thirst, items do not decay, wounds do not heal without magic).

With added draconic strength, dragon-Muirfinn is able to stand up and move. It's still hard, but he's up and mobile. Thus the party heads down the stairs. The gravity is heavy here, making it difficult to breathe and slow going. You're up but moving, heading down the stairs. Or starting to. Ahead you can see slits in thew all opening. From them gushes of lava erupt out, spraying all about the steps. From the roof more murder holes open, blue-green gas leaking out.

OOC: Can I polar ray the lava to turn it back to rock/block the lava? How much time do I think that would buy us? Also, as asked in #elysium, do we still have astral flight, or was that overwritten by heavy gravity? Your previous posts implied it. If overwritten, do we still move at 10ft/Int just without flight, or do we move as normal for land?
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)
Post by: Anastasia on November 12, 2015, 01:36:17 PM

1. Yes, though not all the lava's connected and there's only so much a single ray could do. Something with a radius would work better.

2. You think how much time it would buy you would depend on the spell and how far it goes. The stronger the cold damage, the better.

3. Conditions has been updated to reflect that flight is currently offline.

The blast of super-cooled air freezes the lava solid, turning it into long strings of volcanic rock instead. It hits the ground hard, the sprayers clogged by this sudden change. Steamy fog explodes out everywhere, obscuring the way ahead.

No heat damage this round due to the sudden cooling. Act, y'all.

Ithea follows afterwards, hoping to navigate the fog quickly to the next room. Ithea braces and studies the room. The orb is the source of this heat...or so everything's set up to see. You can just barely discern that it's a trap, the orb is not it at all. If you break the orb or try and dispel it, a massive torrent of magical energy will rip you into shreds. The real source is further along, somewhere past the wall that serves as a dead end ahead.

Pain as the heat bored into you. Roasting heat that could flash-fry an unprotected mortal in seconds. But you stand against it, studying the magic ahead. This orb controls the heat, you're sure of it. Problem is, it's connected to the previous orb. If it's touched, disturbed, move or affected by any magic, it'll trigger the trapped orb. You might be able to overcome this with Use Magic Device or Disable Device, with the latter being easier.

"Right. Okay." Muirfinn takes the orb in scaly claw and heads out through the disintegrated wall. Once past the original pedestal, he takes the orb and throws it with all his strength at the furthest wall.

The orb is thrown, an explosion thereafter. It rocks the hidden chamber, but the oppressive heat fades away at last. The pain of the burning is finally gone.

Ithea reaches where Sylvie stands guard. She's in a defensive position but otherwise nothing has changed. "Not a thing," Sylvie reports, "I'd bet they're gathering their power or waiting on reinforcements. "This entire fortress screams that they're buying time...on the Astral. Which means there's probably a portal in here somewhere." She purses her lips, "I'd bet on it. Stall and bring out the serious defenses in case Aurora attacks."

"Yeah, let's finish this," Sylvie says with a sharp smile, "Ready to hunt, Ithea?"

Meanwhile Muirfinn looks around. There's bows and swords from the slain erinyes, while the gelugons dropped nothing. Looks like 21 dissolved whatever they carried.

The party heads to the untaken door. It opens into a curving hallway of black stone and red runes, no opposition immediately present. Yet as you look ahead, you feel a chill crawl across your bodies. The hallway is unassuming and leads to another door.

"Something's ahead," Sylvie grimaces, turning away from the door. "Something strong."

Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)
Post by: Merc on November 18, 2015, 10:40:35 PM
Ithea decides to heal up, and offers some to Lief as well, since he probably doesn't have anything besides a wand or scroll. Sylvie can fend for herself, and Muirfinn looks like he's healing fine as well.

Although unlikely to be needed, she also casts a spell so she can see through invisibility, and once again makes a mental note to pick up something with True Seeing. Unfortunately, she'll probably forget again once back in Aurora as soon as Stille greets her with some fancy dinner and kisses. Damn distracting boyfriends!

OOC: Using four uses of Opportunistic Piety, two for herself, two for Lief (46 HP healing). Ithea goes from 293 to 339/346 HP.

Muirfinn shrinks down to his normal self and rapidly casts spells, offering the same to his companions.

Casting:

Self: Owl's Wisdom (+10 Wis for 1 hour), Halo of Sand (+4 deflection bonus for 2 hours), Sheltered Vitality (Immune to ability damage/drain for 20 minutes), Death Ward (20 minutes)

Pipe in if you want anything?
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)
Post by: Merc on November 19, 2015, 03:35:37 PM
OOC: Ithea would like the last two. I'd have to check on Halo, I think she already has deflection bonus. What type of bonus is owl's wisdom? I'll confirm in an hour or so for both those spells.

Edit: Ithea will pass on the first two. She has deflection +5 already, and Owl's Insight is enhancement bonus, same as Belt of Magnificence which is a +8 bonus for Ithea. Doesn't seem worth it.

(Owl's Wisdom is a flat +4, Owl's Insight from MoF is the one that's half your caster level, so I assume you meant that. Wouldn't it give you +11 btw?)

Sheltered Vitality and Death Ward are both still appreciated. By everyone, I think, actually.

A wave of terror passes through the party. Something is wrong. Your nerves scream at you, only sheer willpower keeping down unthinkable horror. Through the fear, Ithea can pinpoint one thing: Something horrifying has arrived. Something akin to a Nessian or worse. Its presence is toxic, as toxic as the bits of Abigor that infected Jaela and Adrian. It naturally beats down and terrifies those that dare oppose it.

For Lief? He shakes. It's back. He remembers the faceless ones in the Gray Wastes, being alone and vulnerable as he struggled to survive. It all comes back in a torrent, a hundred forgotten nightmares coming to mind at once.  They're coming for him again and he can't stop shaking, can't stop can't stop can't stop. His breathing quickens as he starts to choke on air, as he feels the fingers of the 'loths on him again, whispering about how Baator will be so happy to have him back, to take him to the lemure pits that the others escaped from.

Ithea and Sylvie made the save. Muirfinn's immune thanks to the potion. Lief is panicked.

"Lief, get a hold of yourself! We're all here with you, and you know we've beaten anything that's fought against Aurora! We're going to be fine!" Ithea exclaims, trying to unpanick Lief. "We can take whatever's arrived!"

She tries her best not to sound uncertain and to project the certainty of victory that both Afina and Jaela would have in this situation (Adrian would probably be in the same shoes as her at least).

"Be ready to fight - about now," Sylvie drawls, as Ithea opens the door. Ahead is a door 10ft ahead, while to your right the entire space opens up into a large chamber. Here a hall extends towards the green spire you saw outside. The spire is now cracked and with blots of red and black spreading over it in a repeating pattern. Nine dots in the same pattern, over and over and over again.

You can hear voices. Hundreds of voices crying out in pain, echoing in your minds like a nightmare that won't go away with the dawn. Amid it you can hear a paean being sung in Infernal, offering praise to the Serpent Throne.

"If we are outmatched too badly, I can get us out of here. Whether we proceed or not, they know we're here. The only difference our choice makes is who gets to react to it first, us or them. We're here now, and they can only prepare so much for us." Muirfinn says.

Thus the heroes advance towards the spire. As you approach it, you can see a tall, wide pair of doors that lead into it. When you're 20ft away, they swing open. Ahead is an emerald chamber stained red and black. 10ft in and 30ft away are two of them - the massive pit fiends that are so much more. Nessian Pit Fiends, each armed with an axe that seems carved out of dark metal.

But that is not what captures your attention. As horrifying as they are, choking the air from your lungs, there is more. It is 15ft behind the Nessians and 45ft away from the party in total. It is a pit fiend - a cornugon - a gelugon - more. All of them. A grotesque mismatch of body parts, stitched together into one whole. It is as large as a giant and whispers in a chill voice, "Aurora." It is a voice Muirfinn recognizes - the voice of Prince Lixer. It comes from the abomination before you. "Crush them." At this, the Nessians spring forward, a blur of red and black that advance on you faster than you can perceive.

Init here.

The blast of 21 rips through the Nessian Pit Fiends, causing both of them to dodge back. One is only grazed, while another loses most of its left wing to the blast. Legion takes it head on, buffeted back and dozens of mouths appearing to silently cry in pain. Before they can react further, she channels healing into her body, wounds mending.

"21. Crush her," Lixer's voice is cold and dispassionate, even as the being it comes from writhes and silently screams.

"So hey, how's the old Castle Crumbling doing these days? Find any good help to replace Malagon?" Ithea asks Lixer as she focuses on the closest of the Pit Fiends, giving a showy twirl of her glaive as she steps to the side to avoid Muirfinn's large frame with a click of her heels and then slashes away at her chosen target with holy empowered strikes. "Come on, SHARE!" she shouts out the last part, empowered with magic.

OOC: Arcane Strike Lv 4 spell, haste activated, full attack on closest Pit Fiend, and a Shout spell targetting it and the Pit Fiend behind it.

Ithea throws all her fury at the Nessians, attacking all out. Blow after blow swings - and a barrier of force appears around them, armoring them. It looks like mage armor but far more, stopping Ithea's strikes cold.

"Hell awaits you!" The Nessian bellows as Ithea's assault fails. But she rears back and flings off a quick shout spell.

Both endure it well, the sonic blast mildly ruffling them. As this happens, a dreadful sense of inevitability comes over all of you. The clanking of chains is heard, the phantom touch of hot iron wrapping around your limbs.

As the party endures that strangeness, the first Nessian raises its axe, stepping forward to try and cut Ithea in half. It looms over Ithea, blotting out all the light around her.

"Not...yet. Not yet it doesn't!" Ithea bellows right back as she slashes against the Nessian Pit Fiend as a counter to one of its missed attacks, trying to take out its eye even as she's ravaged by its axe, trying to understand what its protections are and making sure the others get as much information as they can to dispel whatever they might be.

Ithea can tell that the spell is epic mage armor.

To save you looking it up in custom spells, it's +20 AC.

Ithea is ravaged horribly, torn open and bloodied by that axe. Her insides ache when it touches her, a throb deep in her heart. Her blood flies everywhere - and goes right into the axe, soaking in instantly. She staggers and stays up, even as the fiend's side is gashed open. It points at Ithea and utters, "It's useless." Suddenly the magic around her crumbles like a sandcastle in the tide.

You're getting dispelled as its swift action SLA. What spells do you have active on you?
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)

OOC: Ithea right now has GMW active on weapon (not sure if that counts on her or on weapon), haste from the boots, and RE(fire). And all of her gear is enchanted with whatever passive enchantments, of course. Those three are the passive effects.

GMW is gone, as is haste. Resist energy remains.

As magic crumbles aorund Ithea, she can dimly hear Sylvie call out. But her world is pain and collapsing sight, her vision bloody red and her breathing labored. Meanwhile, Legion points at Muirfinn next. "You will not escape again." Lixer intones, as suddenly all the magic around him goes into flux, attacking him rather than protecting him.

You're also getting dispelled. What spells do you have on you, tortle?

As dozens of mouths on Legion silently howl invectives, the magic around Muirfinn explodes. It scalds and freezes him, ravaging his body as his woven protections succumb. Then dark mist begins to gather around the strange creature, thickening and growing heavier all around it.

"Well, if you want to play rough, we can start with this." Muirfinn shifts, abandoning his draconic form and whipping a staff from his back. A command word in Terran later causes the area next to the lead pit fiend to heave as a great monolith of earth and stone pulls itself from the aether and smashes into the pit fiend menacing Ithea, interposing itself between the two!

You're in the hall leading to the green spire, yes. The problem is that an elemental monolith is a gargantuan creature and you have Ithea up in the Nessian's face. There's not really room for it to cut in like that.

They're side by side, so no. There's just not room there to summon a gargantuan elemental monolith. There is some room for something smaller between Ithea and then - nothing bigger than Medium. A horizontal wall could also work.

The ceiling is 25ft tall. Plenty of room up there. There's 50ft of distance in the hall - quite wide, but as the Nessians show, building big makes sense on the planes.

"Well, if you want to play rough, we can start with this." Muirfinn shifts, abandoning his draconic form and speaking a word in Auran, like thunder. Abruptly behind the pit fiends appear a line of three living storms, each a towering whirlwind of lightning, wind, and chaos reaching from floor to ceiling and looming menacingly.

By my math, that means a Huge creature would fit nicely. Waiting to see if there are summoning defenses before having them act.

"Resistance is useless!" The second Nessian declares, a wave of stilling will washing over the party.

Will saves. This is paralysis and a mind affecting enchantment. If you're immune, post saying so instead of a save.

To finish, Muirfinn's immune.

Initiative is: Sylvie (43) > Ithea (42) > ??? (36) > Nessian 2 = Legion (34) > Lief (30) > Muirfinn (28) > Nessian 1 (27)

The wave of magic nearly sends the party to immobility, but Ithea shrugs it off with a force of will. Lief is next, clearing his head and body. Finally, Sylvie just stands her ground, letting it wash off of her. The blonde then explodes into action, flying behind Ithea, just a hair out of reach of the Nessian. Her hand goes out, restoring Ithea. "This may not be a battle we can win," she tersely whispers to Ithea, "We may need to get out of here before we're overwhelmed."

Heal x2 on Ithea for +300 hit points of healing.

Ithea's wounds reverse before your eyes, flesh becoming whole and wounds knitting back together. Ithea's vision clarifies, reality no longer a mishmash of pain and suffering. Meanwhile, Legion's mouths begin to silently sing, as Lixer's voice is heard. "Now, Taelfagn."

Ithea, go.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)
Post by: Merc on November 28, 2015, 10:44:47 AM
Given how well they're being countered, Ithea nods in agreement. At least they saw some of what to expect in a future encounter once they're a bit more prepared and Lixer a bit less so. Rubbing the bracelet that Sylvie had previously gifted her, she summons up a gate targeted to Ysgard, rather than Aurora. "We're leaving, everyone."

ooc: If it comes up, CL of the Gate is 17. I'll hold on my move action until I see others going through. If Muirfinn can drag Sylvie through, I'll move with Lief. If not I will wait for Sylvie. Can Sylvie cast gate or just Yuth in case it is dispelled?

Ooc edit: Also I will spend an inspiration for AC, and use inspiration as needed on saves during this round.

The caster level does indeed matter.

But before that, I need a location for the gate. Where is it appearing?

ooc: I can't recall the names of locations in Ysgard, but I'd want someplace relatively safe from where we could get back to Aurora without much difficulty. If you really need some place specific/named, then I suppose maybe Brightwater instead as a destination? On phone so don't want to go through logs searching for locations.

The portal appears - and as you see Ysgard, you begin to see chains start to creep over the portal. "I think not," A new voice is heard from all around you. "It is not fated for you to escape here. Aurora, your fate is to perish here. Your Crusade's time is up and only Hell awaits."

Will saves, all.

Immune to Mind-affecting, if it matters. Assuming it doesn't, so requesting a roll at +37. Also, I can Gate twice if needed. And also dispel. And wide-area nuking that will probably kill everyone. Let's not use that if we can avoid it.

It's a sensation like drowning. You need not breathe on the Astral, yet you feel your lungs filling with fluid. There is the sensation of your limbs being bound by iron chains, vertigo follows as you struggle against the growingly intense feeling that you're falling. Plummeting. Walls close in around you. A terrible inexorability pummels you from all sides, a hideous thing.

There is no escape. Hell awaits. There can be no other conclusion.

Somehow Ithea brings to mind flashes of better things. Arguing with Adrian, talking with Sylvie, spending time with Stille. The Crusade. She gasps and takes a breath, the feeling leaving her. Lief and Muirfinn are not so lucky.

Lief and Muirfinn, you two are cursed. You suffer a -6 penalty to attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, saves, ability checks and skill checks.

"Your portal is useless," The Nessian declares, raising his axe to one more END Ithea. She feels drawn to the axe, watching as it comes down to claim her head. As it does, it utters a profane word that tears through your ears and the room, dictums of unthinkable evil appearing in red letters before your eyes.

Will saves. This is an evil spell so bonuses against evil apply.
Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)

ooc: that was terrible rolling and I'm not sure if I want you back rolling anymore for me, sir! ...but yeah still need someone to roll for me so if you have to, you have to.

Same modifier (+44), I have no bonuses vs evil but using inspiration.

If it comes up, I'm at full HP thanks to Sylvie, my AC is currently 67 vs the Nessian and counting this will save I've used 5 of my 6 inspiration for encounter.

Is everyone needing a new set of will saves or just me?

Still beats Ithea's damage reduction/silver.

Ithea is beaten and slashed, front ripped open again as more blood spills. The axe greedily sucks it all up, as the Nessian's bite ravages her, not to mention its tail and wings.

Two Fortitude saves, Ithea.

Ithea is battered and beaten again, bloodied. But she's still up despite the chill that overtakes her body, as if all the warmth is being drained from her. As Ithea tries to stand, the voice of Lixer is heard, "There is no escape. Not this time." At the same time, all the mouths of Legion howl, as suddenly a wave of weakness washes over the party.

Will saves, all.

A wave of weakness passes over, as if your very energy is being siphoned out. It's hard to do anything but wither under this, vision tinting black as each of you staggers. But you withstand the worst of it, bodies pale and shaking, but alive.

300 negative energy damage, halved to 150 since everyone made the save. This can't reduce you to below 1 hit point. If any of you are immune from the buffs Muirfinn cast, say so and you're off the hook. Post your updated HP after that, since what happens next may depend on that.

If anyone wants to identify the spell, roll spellcraft.

The spell is mass harm or a variant. Ithea can tell it siphons the life force out of a creation through overwhelming negative energy. Based on the spell work, it's likely modifi-oh, she gets it now. It's going to repeat next round and the round after. A double repeat spell, which means it'll happen again next round and the next round after.

Meanwhile, the dark mists around Legion grow stronger. They're getting heavier, providing the creature with a degree of concealment as more accrues.

Initiative is now: Sylvie (43) > Ithea (42) > ??? (36) > Nessian 2 = Legion = Repeating Mass Harm (34) > Lief (30) > Muirfinn (28) > Nessian 1 (27)

Lief's up, forgot to say so explicitly last post. My bad.

The chains are still creeping around the portal, Ithea. It's not fully blocked but they're working on that. You aren't sure about dispelling them, one could find out by trying. You might be able to get through the chains if you're fast about it.

Arrows again fly, raining down on Legion. But the first arrow lands right in Legion's middle, almost missed amid the holy s mites hitting Legion? It begins to smoke and smoulder, the many mouths of Legion again silently howling - until they burst aflame, golden flames that sear the faces into charred masses. "You dare - the power of Jormugandr?" Lixer hisses in a whisper, Legion starting to burn all over. "Taelfagn, end them!" The Prince of Undeath manages to get out as Legion crumbles into a pile of ash, which is burnt into absolute nothingness.

Muirfinn isn't clear on precisely what the chains are and how they work, but he can tell that it's altering where the portal will take you. It's not complete yet and you might still end up in your original destination. Maybe.

"Well, it's been fun. Farewell!" Muirfinn snaps off a quick spell, and the group blinks away!

Plane Shift (Water)

I thought I was being clever. Damn. Muirfinn would know that too. Okay, scratch. This'll require some thought.

Questions: How fast are the chains covering the portal? Can Muirfinn bodily grab Ithea and chuck her through the portal and follow himself, without provoking an AoO?

Title: Re: Infiltrating a diabolical stronghold (full party)

Problem: Normal teleportation and shifting doesn't work on the Astral, as noted before. Gate does since it creates an actual portal, but lesser means are ineffective. You need a portal or color pool to get out.

Ithea stabs out, managing to shallowly wound the Nessian. It's just a graze in its stomach, hardly slowing it at all. Its axe begins to burn with infernal fire, "Bow to the King of Hell!"

The blow hits Ithea head on, a smack with the broad side of the axe. It sends her sprawling, giving the Nessian a chance to stomp down on her rather hard, ribs cracking beneath its clawed foot. At the same time, a foe appears behind you, back at the entrance of the way you came. It is a classical devil, fire red skin and standing around 10 feet tall. He's broad and lean, a smirk firmly planted on his face.

He wears rich finery of green and gold, elegant and immaculate. A length of heavy chain serves as a bracelet on his right wrist. He carries no visible weapon, but smiles on seeing you. "Aurora," The same voice as before, "Rejoice! Few foes warrant a personal battle with a Duke of Hell. Go screaming into Hell knowing that you are singularly honored mortals." As he speaks, two pit fiends come from behind him, forming a defensive line 10ft in front of him. They are not Nessians, at least, but 'merely' normal pit fiends.

Taelfagn is 90ft behind the party and blocking the way out. Sylvie's up and will be in the next post.

Ithea grimaces as she rights herself with feline grace (OOC: Using Back on Your Feet, immediate action, to stand up after trip), and she turns to Sylvie, "Can you use 21 to destroy the effect on the Gate? Return it to its true purpose, getting us out of here and to Ysgard?"

"On it," Sylvie shouts back, 21 appearing in her hands. She utters three profound words of power, a blast of light hitting the chains and portal.

Light washes over the chains, shattering them like nothing more than cheap glass. Sylvie takes this chance, diving through the portal, uncaring of the opening it provides.

Sylvie's hacked as she dives through the portal, vanishing through it and away.

Ithea, go.

Ithea takes a brief second to heal before carefully committing to memory the locations of the enemies and their possible attack options and withdrawing through the portal after Sylvie. "Stay alive and make it through, you two!" Ithea demands of Lief and Muirfinn.

Ithea escapes through the portal - and the Duke of Destiny chuckles. "Enough then," He raises a hand, the magic of the portal shuddering as if squeezed.

Like that, the portal goes out entirely, dispelled. Taelfagn spreads his arms wide, "And now, the fated hour!" At this words, chains erupt from thin air all around the two, going to engulf them.

Lief and Muirfinn are seized by chains. There is no escape, no hope, no resistance. They are dragged down into screaming, beckoning darkness. A chorus of agonized moans greets them as darkness consumes all.
