Okay, quick check. Your first move is to talk to Balyss about Ettan?
Yeah, see if she knows where we'd be most likely to find him.
Easily enough done. Balyss is found in the baths, alone and soaking. She's snoring lightly, eyes closed and head flopped back.
Jaela decides to give her time to rest, using it to properly relax before the impending battle.
Elena should've said if Balyss was sleeping! Knowing the importance of resting to regain spells, Afina leaves Balyss to her repose intending to catch her later.

As you turn to go, Balyss murmurs, "I'm up, I'm up." She slowly sits up and yawns, scratching her side and stomach. "Selune help me, I was up all night without a nap the day before, and on short sleep."
"Need some more rest?" Jaela asks from across her. "I'm not here to pressure you."
"It can wait. Selune's calling draws me," she sits up, "Do you want to do this somewhere more formal, or for that matter, clothed?"
"I don't really care," Jaela admits. "We'll be properly clothed for when we get Ettan, that's enough for me."
"It's just a quick consult, unless you need to be in a temple for a better connection with Selune," Afina agrees. "We want to kill or capture Ettan today, and need to know where he'll be found."
"Give me a few minutes to pray," Balyss says, "If I start snoring, wake me up." She then bows her head, hands clasped in front of her.
Jaela leans back and watches Balyss, as requested.

Balyss has her head bowed a few minutes, "They're trying hard to block Selune's vision, but Taelfagn has his limits. He is at Blackhearth, both to inspect the damage and because it is unlikely Aurora would return again in two days."
"We wouldn't have otherwise," Afina comments. "Thank you Balyss. And Selune."
"You don't say," Jaela muses with some degree of surprise. "Is Taelfagn with him?"
"I'm not sure, but I don't think so," Balyss finally says, yawning widely.
"Go rest, Balyss," Afina pats her golden shoulder as she flies up out of the bath. "We'll handle Ettan."
"Yeah. Yeah. Hey, Jaela. C'mere," Balyss yawns again.
"Hmm?" Jaela asks, treading water to come over to Balyss. "Need help getting out so you don't drown?"
"I need a pillow," Balyss leans over, resting her head on your shoulder. "Mmm. Soft."
Jaela blinks before shrugging. She supposes it's a decent price to pay for getting the insight on Ettan. Afina could plot things out, having been the one that actually went into the tunnels, and then they'll go and get themselves another traitor.
"Come by in a couple of hours then, Jaela?" Afina suggests with a smile before she flutters off. "I'll have everything ready by then." This doesn't need to be much of a complex plan after all.
So what is the plan going to be?
Afina, Jaela, Simmer, and the Master all gate to near Blackhearth, interplanar telepathic bond in place.
Afina and the Master stealth up to approach and find a good hiding spot, see if they can spot Ettan early.
Simmer and Jaela then attack and start laying waste to stuff, luring Ettan out so he can buff his dudes if he happens to be out of sight.
Afina and the Master beat the shit out of Ettan, stuff him in a sack, and we all run away to gate back to Aurora.
Sounds good. Boosts ready besides the telepathic bond?
I found that these worked well last time, so I trimmed those too short term or too flashy for group action.

'Looks empty on the exterior,' Afina says to Jaela via telepathy. 'We'll check out the tunnels, we want to have a bead on Ettan before you begin your diversion.'

For clarity, how are you seeing into the tunnels from the outside? If it's your spell, paste it in here.
I was actually looking for dudes posted around the tunnel entrances, but yeah as we get closer my blindsight has a really long range so seeing dudes further within is easily on the table:
You gain senses unrivaled by any other creature, making you nigh impossible to ambush. You gain all-around vision, which prevents you from being flanked. You see invisible and ethereal creatures normally. Your senses sharpen to razor keenness, granting you blindsight 200ft. Finally, you gain a +25 competence bonus to spot and listen checks.
There's no one on the perimeter - check that. Someone's about 200ft away, by the middle of the crack in the earth. It is standing there, unmoving, but it is a human-like figure.
Is he invisible to normal sight?
I can use the DC 70 epic usage of spot to see through visual illusions if so, taking 10 for 80. Want to get an idea of what this guy looks like.
He is - some spell you know not, but it crumbles as you focus. A blank faced man, gray and unremarkable. Stone gray, wearing ulitarian clothes well worn. It looks human and is gazing right in the party's direction.
A trap? Certainly he doesn't look like one of Ettan's foaming mad ragers.
Also he can see them despite their not inconsiderable efforts at stealth, so he's clearly not someone to be trifled with. 'No sign of any of Ettan's forces, but someone with the look of an assassin was waiting for us. Retreating in your direction,' she sends to Jaela, messaging to Master to follow as she withdraws. See if he follows them.
'Adancing,' Jaela responds, starting to move in ahead.
As the party begins to move, Afina can see the figure makes no effort to move ahead. He watches the four of you but does nothing else.
Can I clarify something? Afina and Master went ahead to the big lava pit/tunnel area under stealth while Simmer and Jaela hung back near where we gated in several hundred feet away from Blackhearth itself.
You've said that he's looking at 'the party' and 'the four of you'. Has he been looking at Jaela and Simmer who aren't hiding but shouldn't be in line of sight to anyone who's in Blackhearth (I'm not sure if he's standing down on the lava or floating in the air at ground level in the middle of the crevasse, the latter of which would give him sightlines on those two), or has he been looking at Afina and the Master?
That's a very good point. He's looking at Jaela's group then.
okay, that changes Afina's reaction then. I'll reline after work rather than phoneposting it though.
Okay, strike Afina's earlier line about retreating.
A trap? Certainly he doesn't look like one of Ettan's foaming mad ragers.
'There's no sign of any guards outside the tunnels, just one invisible individual hovering above the pit itself,' Afina sends telepathically to the others. 'Has the look of an assassin, he's spotted Jaela and Simmer. Don't give away that you're aware of his presence yet? I'm going to see if anyone's in the tunnels, this feels like a trap to me.'
Then with all her arts of stealth, Afina drops down the side of Blackhearth where her blindsight can penetrate into the tunnels, keeping a metaphorical 'eye' on the human-looking figure via her all-around vision as she does so.
Waiting a sec on Jaela in case that changes her action or prompts anything.
Let's reline, sure!
'We'll advance in the general direction of the tunnels,' Jaela thinks to her allies. 'If he strikes at us, we'll play our part as the distraction.'
If this enemy doesn't realize they have knowledge of him, he might well allow them to get within 60ft and in range of her own blindsight.
Afina and the Master slip down the sides, the gray figure making no action to them.
The immediate gap is empty, barren, blasted from the previous battle. You shudder as another scream's memory echos through you, an urge to be ill rising in your stomach, up your throat.
The tunnels to the sides are empty, but not all. Several of the deeper ones have creatures stationed - large ones, generally blocking the way.
Meanwhile, Jaela advances to towards the tunnels. You notice you can feel him with your blindsight when you come in range.
'Getting a sense of some guards down a few of the tunnels, perhaps,' Afina relays. 'Lookout is still just watching you two, probably in telepathic contact with someone. We're going to sneak down the tunnels, hopefully find Ettan. You may as well begin your diversion since if you wait around it'll only look suspicious.'
Afina does have hide in plain sight to help in getting past any blockers without notice.
'Launching attack,' Jaela sends back. 'Simmer, go half a second after me. Follow my aim.'
As she gets within 120ft, Invisibility Purge seeks to break down any forms of invisibility, while Moonlight Revelation greatly reduces any attempts at hiding while attempting to dispel any illusions in Jaela's way!
If this all fails, I'll launch the attack from 60ft via blindsight. Otherwise, as soon as he's revealed.
Make a dispel check, Jaela.

With the signal given, Jaela halves the distance between them and opens up with twin Bolts of Glory!

You're correct. Also no more dispels needed.
The bolts of glory hit the creature - and knock it back slightly and no more. No visible reaction despite being hit head on, nor did the magic fail. Then...
Simmer. Any preference here? I can let yo urun her if you'd rather do that.
Meanwhile Afina and the Master hurry down the tunnels with great stealth. You come to one that soon you can see a pair of large, lumbering orthons blocking the way, though they don't show any sign of having seen you right away.
Being both tiny and preternaturally good at hiding, Afina glides along the ceiling and over an orthon's shoulder, passing within inches of its face without being seen! She's confident the Master has his own ways of bypassing these meagre guards.
I dunno if he can stealthily tumble through their squares or if he has to use abundant step to teleport past them, but the Master knows his shit I'm sure he's got this.
Lack of dispel rolls precludes a magical defense, and magic was both cast on this guy and dispelled previously so he's not some immune golem. The only ones not hit by Bolt of Glory are good outsiders and positive energy plane natives, neither of which he can be due to glowing 'evil' via Moonlight Revelations. Do I have an idea what this is? Some nonmagical form of Shield Other?

Make a new Hide check for this stunt, Afina.
This creature is evil, but it is not a fiend. You've heard old stories of The Gray, a little known servant of the Queen of Air and Darkness. He is a fey, a creature of stone known to be a dispassionate observer for the Queen. It is said only holy power can reveal him, yet only the power of darkness can wound him.
It...could be him. Perhaps. Little is known of him and most is ancient legend, assuming he actually exists.
It could also be a yugoloth, the gray nonthingess suits them and is tied to them. If so, it is likely a unique outsider rather than a typical one. That fits too, and a unique outsider that you don't know can have abilities strange and mysterious.

Afina will see if she has any inside knowledge on this guy.
Afina knows a little more in addition to what Jaela does. She recalls that neither law or chaos can hurt The Gray, if this is indeed him.
It is said that if The Gray is in a location, the Queen of Air and Darkness can see through his eyes.
'If it is him he can only be harmed by the unholy methods, and his presence means the Queen of Air and Darkness is paying personal attention to this area,' Afina tells everyone after a moment's thought. 'He shouldn't be aligned with devil-kind. You could try making contact, but this isn't a distraction we can really afford.'
As far as she's concerned if he's in a warzone skulking around he can't really begrudge being attacked by either side.
Meanwhile, Afina and the Master slip by the orthons, barely making the slightest breeze to disturb them. If they sensed you, they didn't show any sign of it.
Master takes 10 on Hide and Move Silently.
Meanwhile, the gray creature does not react as Simmer says, "About damn time!" She weaves magic, a massive ball of flame surrounding the creature.
Enhanced searing empowered lingering flames. Not rolling damage since moot.
Around the creature a maelstrom of fire forms. It burns around it like the eye of a devil tossed into the Lake of Fire, yet it stands amid it, barely even bothered by it. Then - !!!
Well, that provoked init. Roll it, Jaela. Not Afina, you're not in combat right now.

On the plus side? You have confirmation now, that has to be The Gray. For those black snowflakes were the Queen of Air and Darkness's black snow, her personal attack where she destroys any who dare offend her. A divine blast, capable of cleaving through virtually any mortal defense. How she's using it through him isn't clear, though your best guess is that he's a proxy and she's given him that power as well as the ability to see through his eyes.
'The Queen of Air and Darkness is fighting us through her proxy,' Jaela's pained mental voice reports. 'It doesn't look good, and she hasn't made any demands. Simmer, perhaps you should retreat.'
She rakes her mind for anything that could possibly help, even as she asks, 'Would the Gray be a native to Lifasa, or can he be sent off with the right spell? I can't use unholy shit, but what about forcible Plane Shift or Holy Word?' Tepen or Afina might have a clue, even if she can't think of anything better.

'Retreat,' Tepen's advice is immediate, 'What profit is it to antagonize the Queen of the Unseelie? Do you even know if The Gray is helping the devils?'
'D-damn,' Simmer gasps, 'Away or off plane?'
Meanwhile Afina and the Master are past the guards, continuing down the tunnel. Ahead you can sense a larger room, with several bodies within it.
Since Simmer is shaken but won't leave on her own, Jaela orders her, 'Simmer, retreat to Aurora at once.'
'We're aborting the mission,' Afina says curtly to all involved. 'We don't know what their goal is here, but it's an unacceptable risk to continue like this. Meet back at Aurora, Master and I will evacuate via plane shift then gate.'
Flying towards the Master she touches him and plane shifts them both to the elemental plane of Earth.
In light of Afina's contribution, Simmer can take us both back.
Simmer grabs Jaela's arm shakily and then you're in Elysium. Simmer promptly collapses, starting to heal as she bleeds and groans.
Meanwhile a wink of magic later and Afina and the Master are in Earth. A hollow, tight cave, the Master looking around. "What happened?" he asks. "Was the reversal that severe?"
Mass Heal heals the worst of this while Jaela grimaces. "I'm fairly certain Simmer is only with us rather reforming than on Fire because the Queen took it easy on us."
"It sounded bad from what Jaela said, but more than that was what it boded. Was the Gray planning to intervene when battle started? On who's side? Well... definitely not ours actually, we know that since he and Jaela fought. What was its goal there anyway? Too many unknowns with too much at stake, it's not worth risking," she shakes her head as she casts gate to open the way back to where they left Aurora.

Soon enough the party is healed and back in Aurora. You're met by Tepen, "All are well?" He asks immediately, ushering you inside. "Shall I summon our experts on these matters?"
"I think we'd be better off going back after a different target while we're still enspelled and prepared for battle," Afina answers, shaking her head. "This is a setback but we have to maintain our pace of attacking Lifasa, now more than ever."
"We should hit Quinn," Jaela responds, wanting to do something with all the adrenaline of the aborted life and death battle. "Break all those profaned relics, level the cathedral. What do you say?"
"That's acceptable," Afina agrees. "Just a simple raid to destroy the place, I doubt we'll be lucky enough to catch Quinn there to effect a capture."
"I'm for it," Simmer says, "Once I finish healing."
A pair of Heal spells top off Simmer and Jaela herself. "Let's break everything there," Jaela says, allowing someone else to open the gate for the four of them. "Tepen, ask Balyss for any insights on our destination or Quinn, will you?"
Afina leads the way out and then opens a gate to the vicinity of the Broken Cathedral!

Let's go burn defiled artifacts to the ground!
Rubble and ruin. You appear within a vast junkyard of broken stone, twisted metal and ruined wood. All around you is ruin, appearing in a little, tucked away dead end. A path through the mess leads ahead.
In the sky above, Lifasa burns red.
As before, Jaela allows Afina and the Master to take the lead while she intends to follow behind with Simmer and draw all attention.
Adopting a stealthy mindset, Afina flutters over the mounds of garbage and along beside the path ahead so she can see what opposition they'll be facing before they get to wreaking havoc.

Toss a Spot and Listen check duo on as well, Afina.
The Master will be taking 10 on the relevant checks.
Taking 10 for 80 on spot and listen.
The four of you creep on - and you haven't gone far when you see the path wind around to the left. You also hear footsteps coming from that direction, heavy footsteps.
Can I determine the creature via my 200 foot range blindsight?
Yes. Three of them, large creatures. Barbed devils, if you don't miss your guess.
'Three barbed devils incoming,' Afina relays to the others, intending to sneak past them. They can break easily enough against Jeala and Simmer while she and the Master scout and position themselves advantageously in case it turns into more of a fight.
'Got it. They're kindling,' Simmer says back.
The Master just nods and begins to slink forward, through the shadows.
Once the devils get in range, Jaela will let Simmer set them on fire and finish off what's left with Gae Dioltas!
The Master and Afina hide and slip by as they pass - three barbed devils, talking quietly in Infernal.
"It's all for Hell's victory," one says, "We must remember that our victory is inevitable, history moves towards our triumph. Hell's domination is the natural order of things. His plan is perfect, we simply cannot see all the angles that are in play."
'Sounds like there's some dissension in the ranks about someone's plan,' Afina mentions to the others, able to eavesdrop easily at a distance with her well honed and magically enhanced hearing.
Another says, "It does not mean his plan is perfect, it could be a chance to rise, to take-" THat's all as they turn the corner and Simmer smirks.
Surprise round, Jaela and Simmer.
'Simmer, burn them to the ground,' Jaela commands. She will act an instant after, striking at any survivors.
Searing enhanced empowered lingering flames, just FYI.

Flames arc down from above, hitting the devils twice over. They burn and shudder in Simmer's flames, falling down and crumbling into black ash amid flashes of fire.
Free act.
With that dealt with so simply, Afina and the Master continue scouting ahead for Jaela and Simmer!
Jaela rolls her eyes, waiting for Simmer to catch up as she asks her, "So how does your fire work? Does it keep on burning for a few seconds more, or it is a neverending burn?"
"It'll fade shortly," Simmer replies, "Figure stealth's in trouble after that."
Waiting one sec on a Jaela reply to that.
"What stealth? We're the ones drawing enemies to us."
Afina and the Master hurry ahead. Past this passage of broken holy symbols and church debris, it opens up into a large center space. Here dozens of paths are about, with the center being dominated by the broken steeple of a church, surrounded by smashed wooden and silver holy symbols.
Turning invisible, Afina flies up a bit to see just what sort of area this whole complex covers.
'Tepen, does Balyss have any insight for us?' Jaela mentally asks in the meantime, letting Afina get ahead while she and Simmer proceed at a more obvious and slower pace.
'It's about to get violent, be ready,' Tepen sends back.
Afina flies - oh crap. Devlis are coming down virtually every tunnel and passage, hurrying along towards the center. Dozens of them, from lowly lemures to far stronger ones.
Oh, that's excellent. How are they spaced? Would it be feasible for a contagious fireburst to go really far if she got them as they converged in the centre?
Afina thinks so, or even a pair of them if Simmer got involved.
'Devils converging from multiple directions on the central area, up ahead for Jaela and Simmer. Hold back a moment, they're rushing and tightly packed, I can work with this,' Afina relays as she floats back down amidst the rubbish and waits for a chance to really mess things up. That should do enough to destroy all these profaned relics, too.
'Oh, glorious!'
The Master steps forward, "A spark onto dry kindling can destroy an entire forest, if placed at the right time."
"Yeah, now you're talking logic," Simmer grins, "You ready for this, Afina? You two may want to be ready to get the hell out of here."
Since we have telepathy and all, I'll move to a safe distance once Afina and/or Simmer alert me so that I don't get charred from that utterly bullshit spell :)
Sure. Afina, go ahead and position Simmer and yourself for this how you please, then we'll get this on the road.
Given they're not immune to each other's firebursts, it's best if Simmer steers clear along with everyone else. Afina simply waits until the lead devils reach the area around that fallen steeple, reinforcements trailing behind them all along the disparate paths stretching throughout this unholy midden... and then things happen.
6th level slot sacrificed for 1 round of time stop, during which Afina casts planar bubble on herself. The area in the centre gets suddenly hotter as an invisible pixie descends there, perhaps not noticed much by the fire-immune devils, though the more astute may notice a few things beginning to smoulder. They don't have long to notice however before a fire conflagration detonates in their midst!
Searing/blistering contagious fireburst cast, using fire apotheosis to energy admixture it for effectively double damage.

Fire damage ignores resistance/immunity and does 250% damage on things vulnerable to fire.

The devils come from all directions, from land and air. They rush Afina as she freezes time, her trap sprung as an explosive fireburst erupts.
Chaos.
Burst after burst.
When it all clears, the entire Broken Cathedral is ablaze, at least as far as all of you can see. No devils nearby, only an inferno begun through Afina's power.
Jaela claps. It seems like the thing to do.
"That is why fire is the best magic," Simmer says with a fond smile, clapping as well.
Afina wears a fairly smug look on her adorable little face as she winks into visibility after that. "I think we're done, though I could make some volcanoes to be sure. Unless anyone else wants to do something?" she says as she flies back to regroup with the others, keeping a polite distance so as not to singe anyone with her planar bubble.
'I think we should mix it up this time,' Jaela thinks to the rest of the group. 'Wait for their first heavy responders and take those out, too. Make this a lot more unpredictable to the defenders next time. Unless Balyss expects bullshit on the level of Taelfagn or Bel?'
The Master merely nods, "Our strength is far from spent, we need not retire right away."
"Volcanoes would be great, however," Jaela muses out loud. "We can fly, and this place supposedly has a defiled central spot? Let's kill it with fire."
For her part, she tries to figure out whether more extreme measures are needed here, as they were with the ghost-ridden land prior.
"It would make them more leery of rushing in reinforcements next time," Afina acknowledges the wisdom of Jaela's plan. "Lets look around to see if anything noteworthy survived the blaze? Sticking together, of course."
Jaela doesn't see anything suggesting those are needed at the current time.
"Nothing supernatural about this, at least. Just the usual defilement," Jaela says, leaving the search for landmarks and enemies both to those with better eyesight. Her own guard remains up in case someone gets close enough she'll need to strike!
Afina will take 10 for 57 on searching around for anything interesting that survived the blaze
Everything's on fire, so landmarks are rather relative. Going up into the air might yelp.
Everything's on fire, so it's not a question if anything survived, but what's currently burning.
In that case Afina just flies high up to have a nice look over the terrain. Everything being on fire is good.
Jaela follows their previous decision of staying in a group!
Everything is indeed on fire. The entire blasphemous grounds burn, stone even ablaze from your searing flames. It's a funeral pyre.
"It's possible I killed everything so suddenly that no one had time to request reinforcements," Afina mentions as they watch it all burn. "So there might not even be anyone coming, assuming no one left after those first hamatulas were killed."
"It might be," Simmer admits, "Let's make some volcanoes and go then. This is a complete success and should provoke Quinn."
"Go all out on the volcanoes, we'll wait a couple minutes and gate away if no one feels like picking up the glove."
2 minutes, then we're out if no one bothers contesting this.
"Make sure to fly up further then," Afina asks. "About three hundred feet should be safe."
At that point she'll cast two volcanic genesis spells while Simmer can manage one, arranging them in a triangular formation around the outer edges of the profaned and now badly burnt ground where they'll ultimately spread to meet in the middle and envelop the whole area in a sea of lava.
If Simmer sticks close to Afina to share her planar bubble they'll all be maximised for free, so lets do that.
