For the moment at least, you have peace and rest.
As you find it often is, your gaze is towards radiant Chronias far above you. You are lost in thoughts of it, lost in contemplating yourself. You sit at your window, your reverie complete and total.
Be strong ahead. You have the gift of hearing me, so know that I seek to undo a self inflicted sorrow in the coming days. Remember justice and remember mercy, for both will be your watchwords.
They will repent.
You are startled from your reverie by the door opening. Grias floats in, "Moore," he calls, bobbing in the air and then looping around to you. "There you are! Sir Romiel is here to visit, I believe it's about the elemental matters and striking against slavery?"
Then floating close and leaning in, as if looking at you without having a face, "Were you napping or...oh, oh, oh." He bobs up and to the window, "Of course, of course! I should have knocked. Forgive me for disturbing your meditation!" The lantern archon colors a rosy red all over, "I'll just be waiting for you with everyone!" He quickly flees, zipping out of the room.
Moore blinks a few times.
Is it possible that the voice is...?
Moore shakes his head quickly as Grias comes in -- he nods once and is about to say something before the lantern archon is off!
"Tell him I'm on my way." Moore calls out. He changes his clothes to go meet with Romiel!
Can you also review my loot post question when you have a second? It may be relevant soon.
Posted there. We'll sort that out first.
Romiel is there, along with Cresiel and the others. "Moore," Romiel greets, rising once you enter, "It's good to see you again."
"Sir Romiel, I am glad to see you in good health." Moore says, flying over to give him a handshake.
"No more intruders, I hope?" He asks.
Romiel's grip is strong as he smiles slightly, "None. No trouble in your section of paradise?"
"None, barring being spied on by an ancient devil and having Shar bother me." Moore says with a huff. "So nothing out of the usual."
Jetina pipes up here, "Yes, but we can handle it."
"We can and we will," Cresiel agrees, "Is all else well, father?"
Romiel returns to his seat, "All is well. Shall we begin in earnest, Moore?"
Moore nods. "Please go ahead."
"We are preparing Operation Summer Blaze," Romiel begins, "We will dispatch seven groups to attack the efreet on Fire. Your group is one of them. The assault is dedicated to the anti slavery efforts, though not all of them will be directly targeted at slaving operations. It is intentional to sow some possible confusion over our total motives to the efreet, though all the targets are ones worthy of being smote."
Moore nods.
"That sounds fine. How soon were you wanting to start this operation and where exactly will be going?" He asks.
"Soon likely, but we're coordinating it with Seira's forces as we speak," Romiel says, a slight headshake, "You'll have three hours of notice at the absolute least."
"Time to prepare," Cresiel agrees, "Time enough."
"Bah, waiting," Kaja frowns, "Who are the other groups?"
At this Romiel shakes his head, "In the event of treachery or spying, that isn't being shared yet. There's no need, none of your objects should be close enough for your strikes to intersect."
Moore nods.
"That's fine. Can you at least tell us about the place we'll be going? I'd like to strategize for it if possible. Also, how should we handle it if the efreet call on favors and we have someone unexpectedly powerful show up? I mean, if Seira is going, I imagine that would give Hell cause to throw their own Dukes and more into it, unless you think that's the wrong way they'd go about it?" He asks.
"That is your choice," Romiel says, "Due to your associations with Aurora, where you strike has extra meaning."
"So wait, do we get to chose our target then?" Jetina asks.
Xandra's eyes are closed as she murmurs, "Tell us more, Romiel."
"Ah, so it'll probably draw them out." Moore says. "But yes, please do go on."
"You can choose if you'd like to strike directly at the slavers, more peripherally or on the diversion," Romiel says, "In broad terms, all of them are defended targets located within Fire. All have the danger of a direct intervention, like you encountered last time."
Moore taps his chin.
"Wherever we go will attract attention, so we may just attack them directly." Moore reasons. He looks at the others. "I think it makes the most sense, given our previous capabilities and how we've handled things. If we do something different, then our enemy may suspect something, at least, that's what I think."
"Yes, but isn't the point of those to make them suspect?" Cresiel says, "There is some logic in us taking an indirect target to fan their own speculations."
"Sure there is," Kaja says, but smiles toothily. "But there's more value in the blood of slavers wetting my scimitars."
"The choice is yours, Moore," Romiel says, "You need not answer this second, but the choice needs to be soon as possible."
Moore nods. "Then let us attack one of the groups not directly involved with slavery. So far our actions are clearly painted in one direction, so if we suddenly go after something related but different, they will be thrown off. That way we still get to fight for a good cause and also destabilize at the same time."
Do you mean indirectly tied to the slavery or not tied to it at all?
If there is an option for us that isn't tied to slavery at all then that's fine and we'll do it, otherwise indirectly tied to is fine also.
"Bah," Kaja huffs out, wisps of flame escaping his mouth.
"It is the intelligent choice," Cresiel agrees with you.
"The Madalan War College, ran by a unique Unseelie Fey banished from that court, is one of the efreet's better war colleges. Here the lesser nobility and promising non nobles are trained in the art of war, too often used against the righteous," Romiel says, "Your goal will be to sack it utterly."
"Prisoners?" Moore asks. "Or any important individuals you'd like us to have captured, if possible?"
"A moment," Romiel says, holding a hand up.
Xandra murmurs, "A message." Her gaze is faraway, distracted. "...ah. I see."
"Yes, a message," Romiel murmurs, "Please wait patiently."
Jetina nods, "Those sort of messages are always important, aren't they?"
Moore sits and waits patiently!
If he was meant to hear it, he would -- so he just waits!
"Events are good," Romiel declares, "However, there is one factor you must be made to understand. Should things proceed a certain way, there may be declarations of war."
Cresiel's face goes stonier at that, while Xandra merely bows her head.
"War, like mortal nations? Are we not always fighting the Hells?" Kaja says, a frown as he leans forward, staring down Romiel.
"We are, but there are certain limits. We are at an undeclared war, where all the various opposing forces maintain an understanding about things." Romiel explains, "Declared war, real war, is far more. A war that may draw in more due to treaty and alliances. Baator and the dao will likely join the efreet in this, and in turn Celestia and the Cauldron will call on their allies and in turn the war will continue to spread." Pausing a moment here, "A war none have been too eager to provoke since the Prophecy of Primus and Shar has grown stronger. Even with Aurora's conflict with Hell, there were understandings that this was another conflict between the forces, not an outright declaration."
A pause here, "With all evidence of how the efreet are reacting to this, this status quo may not hold."
Moore breathes in and nods.
"A war no one wants to fight, but they must fight because of history." He says. "At the same time, if it does advance that far... and we are victorious in this, it would go a long way to paving a road where evil no longer exists."
"If," Romiel agrees, "Those above us have chosen to support Seira in her efforts, but understand what may come to pass. I do not think they will do it, but we cannot neglect the possibility now."
Moore nods. "Very well then. In that case, I'll task Melia with providing us with as much current information about the War College as we can get."
"Then do so. I will contact you as soon as we have a time chosen." Romiel says, "Be prepared. If events pass that may prevent you from fulfilling this duty, notify me immediately."
Moore nods. "It shall be done."
Romiel rises and leaves, a few moments of silence after.
"Is it really that bad if this goes to war?" Kaja asks.
"It is," Cresiel says, voice quiet. "Various and opposing moralities keep to certain limits. We do not have all out war, but closer to skirmishes and competition. Yet you see all the battle and bloodshed that brings. All out war is a dreadful thing, a chaotic thing, an uncertain thing. It has occurred at times in various intensities and scopes."
"No limits, eh?" Kaja rubs his chin as he sits back in his chair, "Why not, then? Why not open war if everyone disagrees?"
"I think most of the leaders, even the ones in Hell, don't want to rule over nothing but an empty wasteland." Moore says. "It's about surviving along with their own ideals. Something like that, anyway."
"Yes. It's about the ideas, not total destruction. Evil will be ended one day," Cresiel says, "That day will come. But it's about the idea of evil, overcoming the ideas of hate, of destruction, of meaninglessness." He turns his gaze to a window, eyes on the wondrous light that spills in from outside. "Once I asked my father questions like this, why we simply did not seek to raze Nessus, to lay low the Crawling City and to crush all within Abysm."
Looking at Cresiel, a soft hum before Jetina asks, "What did he tell you?"
"He told me that as long as mortals lived, as long as forces Competed for them," You can hear the capitalization, feel it. "As long as mortals were mortals, that even doing that would not be the true answer."
"Bullshit," Kaja snaps, "What can they do if we crush all of them? Let them do evil with our blades at their throats."
Moore nods. "It's one thing to say you've toppled Baator, but... even then, the mortal idea of evil won't just go away. That doesn't mean it's pointless to face off against evil, or to do good things... I think it just means that one act, no matter how significant, is never going to be the final answer. There's more to it than just that."
"It is always a good thing to do good, to fight the good fight," Cresiel says, "But that is a byproduct of the true struggle. The true wars take place here," Cresiel pounds his chest once with his fist. "You want to lay evil low? Reach out to others. Support them, show them the true path. Feed the hungry. Protect the weak. Be the example that forges others and leads hearts to repent. Let it be said that they will repent."
Understand Bahamut's lesson to the Authority of Generosity.
Xandra looks up at that, "Yes, I understand," she murmurs, "That is why we fight. Ours is not the ends, but the means to establish the ends."
Kaja glowers at all of you but sits back with a steaming hiss. "Harsh words for one who revels in being a cleansing blade."
"They are, and they are offered in love." Cresiel's voice is softer here, "I railed against what my father told me for some time. I sought the strength to defeat even the Lords of Hell, the Princes of the Abyss and the dark deities. Yet I barely progressed for ages, until I grew to understand the truth and meaning of what my father told me that day."
A glance upwards and then over at Xandra, but a quiet nod follows.
"Your way isn't wrong, Kaja." Moore says. "The thing is, you don't fight with hatred in your heart, you fight for enjoyment, you fight to defeat evil... you fight for those who can't fight. There are many opinions in Celestia and you have to follow your own path to what you see as righteousness."
A smile at Cresiel and then back to Kaja. "I'm with you on whatever path you follow, just remember that."
Kaja hms at that, silent. Pondering, perhaps, lips tightly pressed together.
"And with that, rejoice. Another step closer, another step higher," Xandra states, putting a hand on Kaja's shoulder. "The taste of wisdom is sometimes bitter, but the fruit it grows is always sweet in the end."
With a half hearted sigh, "I think I liked it before you added platitudes to it, archon." Kaja says, no heat in his words. "I like to imagine one day I can stop this. All of this," he gestures widely, "Hell. The Abyss. Gehenna. Everything in between. I can stop it with my blade. I can find a perfect battle and strike all of them down. That beyond my enjoyment of it, beyond the good my battles do, that I can finally DO something. Make a real difference on the cosmic scale. Kill someone important enough that it changes everything."
Xandra nods to that, a slight inclination of her head. "I know. A daydream that has come on me, of standing victorious over the Serpent Throne. We fight, we are warriors and it's only natural to think that. To strive towards something we could concievably do with our own hands. We can believe in our hopes and hubris that we could one day stand triumphant over fiend lords. But to change the hearts of uncountable mortals? Who can do that? Who can even begin to imagine the scope of that task?"
"All of you could, if you tried." Moore says with a bit of a smile. "Imagine how inspiring your actions are, and how much of an impact you've had on the countless slaves we've rescued? Don't you think that's changed their hearts and given them something they never had before? Imagine a rock that skips over a pond and all the ripples that one stone makes."
A gesture all around. "I think you're not giving yourself nearly enough credit for the impact you're already having - all of you, really."
"Moore's right." Jetina says, "Those we help and those we heal will bear the mark of our kindness for a long time."
A lull after that, Kaja's head bowed and the rest quiet.
Finally, "You have a good grasp of the philosophy here, Moore." Cresiel says, "Hard won wisdom for you?"
Moore chuckles a little. "I don't know whether or not I was shaped by Celestia's wisdom or it's always been like that for me. But I think there's a reason I'm here rather than working as an agent of Titania's court, you know? My ideals don't really mesh too well with the eladrin's. That's not to say that they don't also want good things to happen, but... mm."
A consideration for a moment. "It feels like they're less passionate about it, I suppose is the way I'd put it."
"But it's not where you're supposed to be," Xandra shakes her head, "You understand what they don't."
Moore nods with a small smile. "Still, I think Her Majesty is proud of me, even if I may not want to ultimately be part of her Dream."
"Eladrins not being passionate," Kaja snorts, "Have you ever attended an eladrin revel, Moore?"
"They're passionate in a different way." Moore says with a grin. "Hmm, maybe I could visit Arborea and see if any of them would be interested in working more closely with us. That may not be a bad idea after this operation, as we'll have a lot more clout than we do now."
"An eladrin mission?" Cresiel says, then without a single twitch, "Mother has ties there, of course. She'd be glad to help you."
Kaja perks up at that, "She would, wouldn't she?"
Jetina glances sidelong at Kaja, but smiles without replying.
Moore nods. "I'll put it on my list of things to consider."
A breath as he stands up. "For now, let me go talk to Melia, if she hasn't already gone somewhere. We may not have a lot of time before we need to depart, so everyone be ready to go."
Okay, what do you plan to give to Melia, precisely?
Collect as much information as she deems appropriate.
Specifically:
*If there are any VIPs there (people we want to capture) or prisoners (people we want to rescue)
*What sort of defenses they have (not just people, but other sort of mechanisms)
*If it's teleport blocked or anything
*Maybe a secret way in if it isn't teleport blocked?
What sort of pace do you want her to work at here, since time is a concern?
He's willing to have incomplete but thorough information as opposed to complete and non-thorough.
So basically tell her she has as long as she needs, and he'll call her if they get told they have three hours. The item list is in order of importance, also.
As you talk to Melia about it...
'Twelve hours, Moore.' Romiel sends, 'As of this message. Be prepared.'
Since it just resolved in the other room.
Moore looks to the side as if listening to something, then nods.
"Twelve hours." Moore says.
"I'll be back in ten," Melia promises, "It's short work, so I'll do what I can with what I have."
Moore nods. "I leave it in your hands."
Any prep then?
Most of our spells have shorter durations. Lots of things are going to be cast about a few minutes before they go anywhere to maximize them.
The list of spells and abilities being used prior to our actual departure are as follows:
Moore is casting the following for himself:
Biblotecha Arcana: +15 insight to all Knowledge Checks, Scholar's Touch and permanent recollection of information collected with that. (24h)
Superior Resistance: +6 resistance bonus (24h)
Greater Improvisation: 90 luck points to use on skill checks/saves (5h)
Righteous Halo: +4 Sacred to Charisma (1/day)
On Other People:
Life's Grace (CL 19) Immunity to death effects and ability drain, treat armor as ghost touch - 190m
Surge of Hope (CL30): +4 morale bonus to attack, saves, skills - 30m
Fortunate Fate (CL19): Heal (150) cast if reduced to 0 or less hit points.
Things Jetina Will Probably Cast:
Celestial Valor (CL 30)
+8 sacred vs fear and emotion effects that would sap the will to fight, +4 sacred to attack rolls, weapon damage rolls, armor class and saving throws, weapons count as holy
Let's have Jetina use Jetina's Deathlessness on Cresiel and Kaja.
Let's also have her cast Empyreal Ecstasy on the five of them.
And for the heck of it, Mass Energy Immunity for Fire.
Moore is going to use all his songs right before they leave, for the following:
Songs:
+18 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +18 morale bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls
+8 Attack rolls, +3 fort
+12 morale bonus to saves and +12 dodge to AC
+bane effect for all weapons
+11 points of fast healing
This takes 5 uses of his bardic music.
Let me know if I need to better format this for your sake.
No, that's fine. Anything else? I'm just finishing up Seira's end so I'll need a few for that then two nodes worth of spoiler setup.
I think we've got all that we need, unless Cresiel / Jetina have anything else they want to throw in. I know Valiant Fury is a short-term one so that can be cast when we get into a fight.
Then we wait. This shouldn't be too long.
Moore, if you end up running anyone, go ahead and grab the spoiler block here if you like. Just let me know if you do it in the event you do control them.
Who is going to handle transportation, Moore?

Assuming we stay together, I'll handle Jetina and Xandra again.
As you begin to prepare in the courtyard?
"Ooof," Melia comes in, singed and burnt. She raises a hand before slumping against the side of the courtyard wall. "Got it. Rough time but I got it," she says. "At least some info on the quick."
"Goodness gracious, Melia." Moore says, looking to her with concern. "It sounds like we have our work cut out for us, then. Please take some time to recover, too."
Coughing up smoke and soot, Melia groans, "Yeah, didn't even got here. A pissy half dragon did this to me." Kaja growls slightly, but perks up as Jetina races over to Melia. "I mean that I didn't even get there. Oi, the problem with doing fast work means that you can't finesse your normal contacts. You have to in hard, put pressure on and call in markers. Old Rumblebottom took offense."
Moore blinks, then smiles a little bit. "I see. Well, what information do you have?"
"Binabab's Circus," Melia coughs out, "Rolling the d'visit dice."
Jetina blinks and frowns, murmuring a simple healing spell.
Melia shakes her head and coughs up more soot. "Damn dragon egos," she says, "Binabab's Circus. It's a mercenary group and I heard they're visiting. The leader's a githzerai undead and he's in good with some of the efreet nobility. Heard he helps out there, runs training scenarios using his troops."

Moore nods. "That'd be a good group to take out."
"Yeah, just watch out," Melia says, resting back. "Heard they got some nasty special troops."
Moore nods. "We will be prepared."
A nod to that and...
Does that change any prep for you, Moore?
Nah, we're still pretty well armed with magic for this.
Moore will add one other spell for himself, Ray Deflection.
Fantastic, and one final question that I forgot since I was hustling to post the spoiler block: Where precisely are you aiming for?
Let's say north of the college, outside of it by like 100 feet. So still more or less on their doorstep.
Fire.
Fire and flame erupts around you. You stand on seared ground, stone solid and burnt black a thousand times over. Before you a campus of buildings rise, connected with covered halls between one another. It's like a spread out castle as much as a college, the buildings stout and sturdy on a glance. There's an outer wall and a gate ahead, manned by a pair of efreeti guards.
Go ahead and make your appearance, Moore.
Moore appears with the others and takes a quick glance around.
"All right, let's go. We're going to encounter resistance, but we'd encounter that no matter what we do." Moore says as he takes to the air.
Aim is to just fly high over the gates -- expecting people to stop them and am not too concerned about it.
Oh, Kaja needs to fly, so... Moore will give him Air Walk, which lets him walk through the air as if he could fly, I think.
Sure thing. Let's hit init here and begin with that.
Absolutely.
Everyone gets +15 to Init.

Init is Moore (54) > Cresiel (43) > Kaja (33) > Xandra = Guards (27) > Jetina (26)
Open.
"We're going up and over. If they want to fight us, they'll do it up there where we have a better vantage point. I expect we'll get some form of heavy resistance eventually." Moore explains to the others. "Once we're inside, we'll activate the beacon so they can't easily get reinforcements in or out, but I imagine the other forces will keep anyone significant from us."
He gestures to allow Kaja to fly as well as he takes off!
Air Walk on Kaja per my previous mention and he'll fly 60 ft up and forward.
Cresiel follows right behind you, shield at the ready as he takes your side. Kaja's right behind them, jogging along lightly.
Xandra and guards.
"Alarm! Alarm yellow, alarm yellow," The guards shout, scimitars readied, shields held as well.
Go Xandra and then Jetina.
Jetina and Xandra fly up as well!
Jetina will double move since her speed is only 30.
Everyone is in the air now. Ahead is the college proper, if you fly 40ft more ahead and over the walls.
What exceptional types of vision do you have, Moore?
I have True Seeing.
You see a hazy ripple above the walls, rising straight up, higher and higher. A sort of defense you know from Aurora - walls of force. High enough to go beyond the 120ft limit of true sight. It begins just as you advance on, shimmering into place. From what you see it isn't arching like a tome - just a tall wall going up and up and up.
I believe you have an item and aren't using greater true seeing, which removes that range limit. If I'm wrong, correct me. Otherwise, your go.
You are correct.
Moore gestures to try and remove at least part of the wall so they can proceed!
He's using Magic Disjunction -- do you need a CL or dispel check or does it just... get rid of it? I'm not entirely sure from the text on Wall of Force.
Assuming it just works, he's just aiming for an area of the wall near to them for them to use.
Dispel check real quick.
[blockquote]Rolled 1d20+20 : 3 + 20, total 23[/blockquote]
The cap on it is +30, not +20.
Oh, whoops. I doubt a 33 does it anyway, but that's what it'd be.
Your magic hits the wall, shattering it and bringing it down. The way ahead is clear.
I need to stop doubting myself!
"Come on, let's go." Moore gestures at the others. "I'll speed us up in a moment."
Move action to keep going!
How far are you moving, 60ft? Matters.
Yep, 60 ft.
Thus you fly in followed by the others. You can see the college has windows sealing shut with steel grates, the few people outside rushing inside now.
The others follow and...
No meaningful attacks this round. Go. Look about, try and identify things, do something else, whatever.
Moore wiggles his fingers to speed everyone up!
Haste, +1 attack rolls, armor class and reflex saves, extra attack on a full attack, +30 enhancement bonus to movement speed.
He then proceeds onwards, towards whatever the largest and most impressive building is.
There are a few.
The outer areas of the college are smaller buildings, connecting amid themselves and the greater buildings deeper in.
There are three buildings that dominate the center. One is a pillared hall, open for any to come within. It's made of black stone, polished and shining. Statues of efreet are joined by firepits around it.
There is a four story building a little ot the west of that, windowed shuttered over with steel now. It is stately and large, made of the same black stone as the hall.
Finally, there is a tall, narrow tower rising a good ten stories high, a needletipped point tapering off, bringing to mind a wand in hand. It's made of a fiery red stone, the occasional glint suggesting some red quartz is worked into the stone as well.
Moore points at the tall, narrow tower and heads in that direction!
"Tsch," Kaja makes a sour sound, "Are they waiting for us, or waiting for us to commit to a path?"
"Be careful, Moore. I see ahead that all paths forward have their barbs and pitfalls on them." Xandra advises.
"I was going to be surprised if we just came in and took this place without a fight. But yes, I expect them to have plenty of traps." Moore says as he continues along.
Cool, gimme Perception then.
Take 10 for 70.
Odd. As you fly closer, you can begin to see tiny little dots in the air, minuscule even to your trained eye.
A weapon? Hmm...
"Up ahead -- some sort of tiny... something. I'm not sure what they are, but let's proceed with caution." Moore advises.
Nonetheless, they have to proceed forward.
Cresiel leads the way - and you notice that the the dots are starting come at you and gather around all the party rapidly.
"Moore," Xandra says, suddenly and sharply.
"I can see it." Moore says.
A living spell, perhaps?
I have detect magic up, does 74 on spellcraft tell me anything?
Give me Spellcraft and then K:A.
Take 10 for 74 on Spellcraft, and Take 10 for 90 on K:A
Uh oh. They're tiny motes of disintegration, a variant on a living spell made into a swarm. Get in there and let them touch you and you're gonna be disintegrated into fine ash.
What would an antimagic field do to it? well, them, I guess.
As they're living incarnations of magic, Moore's K:A would tell him it would keep them at bay.
Okay. Furthermore, because I am being pedantic today, would there be any way for Moore to usurp control of the living spell(s) in some way?
K:A on that.
Take 10 for 94. I forgot about Surge of Hope earlier, whoops. Teehee.
Maybe with the right spell to do it, something to allow you to assume control of a swarm.
Well, he could bullshit Dominate Swarm with Wish, probably, but... Would a dispel work on them? I'm guessing no but who knows.
You do not believe so, based on your K:A.
Dumb question, I guess... can we just attack them? I mean obviously with something that isn't just... a weapon. So... you know, magic.
You could certainly try.
"Cresiel, try your Burst of Glory! Jetina, get ready with an antimagic field if that doesn't work and -- uh, Xandra, grab Kaja just in case!" Moore shouts.
EDIT: Switching to SR piercing aura for this.
In that case, I'm calling for init.
Oh, silly me, I thought we still were in init from earlier. In that case everyone gets the +15 dex aura and I'll switch it to the SR one when I get my turn.

I'll add them to init instead.

Init is Moore (54) > Cresiel (43) > Kaja (33) > Motes of Disintegration (30) > Xandra (27) > Jetina (26)
"On guard!" Cresiel roars as...
Open Moore.
No need for an apology.
Moore gestures and yells, sending a sonic blast at part of the group of living motes!
Cacophonic burst on a 20ft burst of the motes.
DC 29 Reflex halves.

<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+16 --> [ 1d20=13 ]{29}
Your burst of sound slams into the motes, shaking them up and causing a few to pop. Motes of gray-green light erupt from the popped ones, darting at Moore.
Fort.
"Oh now what?!" Moore shouts.
[22:36] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+58 mettle
[22:37] <Kobot> Nephrite rolled 1d20+58 mettle --> [ 1d20=9 ]{67}
Yet Moore holds himself together, enduring the bursts as...
K:R here.
Take 10 for 97
That was supposed to be K:A, so give me the total for that.
Yeah, was pretty out of it at the end of last night, I slept like a rock.
In that case, 94.
The motes seem unstable - and the more of them that pop, the bigger the explosion of disintegrating magic that will swarm the source of the popping.
"Whoever made these living spells did a bad job -- they're unstable." Moore says quickly. "The more you destroy, the more of a reaction there'll be that targets the same person who destroyed them. I endured it, but I don't know what will happen if you destroy them all... we can't just leave them all up either, though. I trust your judgement."
"It won't be effective," Cresiel says, "They aren't evil! Xandra, this one is yours!"
Cresiel holds, he doesn't have a lot of direct damage magic.
Init is Moore (54) > Cresiel (43) > Kaja (33) > Motes of Disintegration (30) > Xandra (27) > Jetina (26)
Kaja snarls and defends himself, as...
He knows he can't do a lot against a swarm. Motes are up.
The motes surround all of you, amid all the party as...
Fort all.

Sorry, I have a quick clarification question. Bolt of glory absolutely works on things that aren't evil, it just does less damage to them. Am I wrong?
That's correct, yes. If you think Cresiel should do it anyway, feel free to tell him that and it may change his action.
"Do it anyway!" Moore shouts. "It'll at least weaken or fend them off! Better we try than let them all hit us!"
I guess he could also try Mass Charm Monster or Prismatic Spray. I leave that up to his/your discretion.

Both of them hold also since there's no apparent danger.
"Great job." Moore says. "If anything like that comes after us again, Xandra, I'll trust you to take care of it."
Presuming there is nothing else obvious, Moore will move towards the spiral tower again on his go.
"Let us go," Xandra agrees, as you all reach the tower and...
Are you aiming for the top of the tower, ground floor or something else?
Top makes the most sense. We can just break in from there with magic or, you know, the Cresiel Approach.
Sorry about the delay, RL.
Thus you reach the top of the tower, the needle-like top awaiting you.
Go ahead.
"Cresiel, if you would please?" Moore asks.
Cresiel slams his hammer down - and abruptly electricity runs up his body, the angel's form convulsing as...
> roll 1d20+45 Cresiel mettle
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+45 Cresiel mettle --> [ 1d20=5 ]{50}
...he utterly ignores it, striking again and again.

> roll 1d20+45 Cresiel mettle
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+45 Cresiel mettle --> [ 1d20=7 ]{52}
Blow after blow shatters a hole into the top of the tower, crumbling away as lightning dances along his body. Yet Cresiel holds his ground as Jetina gasps and Kaja stares, not a single hesitation from him.
Moore smiles. "You could at least pretend like it bothered you." Moore says with a chuckle as he flies into the hole to take a look around!
Cresiel merely holds his ground as you go within. Inside the tower's top floor is...some desks, some stacked chairs, several brass looking glasses and a chalkboard, as well as stairs going down. Hanging from the ceiling is a series of spheres of glass or perhaps crystal, tightly woven together with strands of red string.
Take 10 on Spellcraft for 74, anything notable?
Beyond teleportation interdiction, no.
"No teleporting." Moore warns the others. He takes the lead to head down stairs!
Kaja grunts, "Naturally."
Down the stairs you go. This leads to a hallway with a few doors on either side, and at the end is a stairway going further down.
"This can't just be classrooms..." Moore says. He goes to check the first door on the left, fully expecting -- ah!
Foresight. I should really remember that.
NOW he goes to open the door, fully expecting a trap somewhere.
The six room are all indeed what looks like classrooms. They have windows on the door, letting you see within.
I want to clarify a point, Romeil told us to sack this place and I want to make sure my OOC definition matches. We're going in to loot anything important, not capture it, right?
Correct. Fire and smashing things is good too. Basically take things, smash things and make a point.
Right then, thank you.
"Let's see if there's anything of any note." Moore says.
Take 10 for 71 on Perception. He's going to go through each of the rooms and grab anything that's magical at all, he won't waste time appraising it.
The party goes into the first room. It's unremarkable - until you step in and the chalk on the chalk board rises, beginning to write.
"Welcome to our Madalan War College, fellow outcast. Shall we begin and play?"
Kaja bares his teeth, leaning forward slightly, "Oh good, trickery. That's always a sign that a sad little fool is whimpering behind minions."
Take 10 for 74 on Spellcraft.
Moore shakes his head. "I'm not one for games anymore, but know that we'll defeat you and whoever else is still here."
The board is a minor magical item, enchanted to write what someone says from afar and send what is said here to them, too.
On the board the chalk continues. "But I'm afraid your appearance here insists on it. You see, this is a game of strategy and tactics. If you can find us and slay us, you win. If you are canny and powerful enough to escape, you win a consolation prize of your lives. But most likely you fail and the forfeit is your lives." A pause before it writes some more, "I invite you - come find us and we can have this discussion in person."
"We will," Cresiel declares, "For even the most wicked deserves to be there when his executioner passes judgment and carries out the sentence."
"You have my respect for your bravado and your flair for dramatics." Moore says.
He turns and moves to go out and go down the next set of stairs -- there's not much else to look for on this floor if it's just classrooms.
Jetina lingers a moment and then follows. As you go out, "I have the feeling they're really prepared for this sort of thing, aren't they? The intelligence of a military commander combined with a fey's love of tricks and pranks could be..." A trail off by her.
"Annoying." Cresiel finishes in a word.
"Troubling would be what I prefer," Kaja says, licking his lips. "Fortunately, most trouble ceases to trouble you with sufficient force."
"Jetina is right. That set up with the board suggests someone who is prepared for exactly this. One does not arrange that on the spur of the moment." Xandra has her blade out and at the ready, "Our choice is either to play or find some way to flip the board over entirely."
Moore shakes his head.
"There's no such thing as a plan that survives successful contact with an enemy." Moore says as they go along. "But yes, we should be prepared for all sorts of... ridiculous things, it seems."
> roll 1d20 20 check
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20 20 check --> [ 1d20=8 ]{8}
At your words, the piece of chalk is tossed right at you, missing you and deflected away.
"Petty, too," Cresiel says. "Onward."
Moore nods and will glance through the windows to the other classrooms -- but will go downstairs unless there's something extremely important-looking!
You spy nothing unusual. Thus the party goes down the stairs. As you do...
Perception.
Take 10 for 74
You hear the subtle click of a wall panel sliding aside. Glancing over, you see one has opened up.
Moore turns to give it a closer look! Usually these sorts of things are just traps, so he fully expects the same here!
How close?
Well this probably isn't a terribly wide set of stairs, so let's say 5 feet?
"Hm?" Kaja pauses as you peer into it. There's a simple wand within - and a split second later a great gush of rainbow colored paint erupts from it, right at you.

Somehow Moore is fast enough. He dodges a gush of prismatic paint, shining brightly on the ground, like a riot of colors.
Moore makes a gesture -- guess what, that wand is his now!
Stone shape -- he's basically going to tear a hole in the wall with it (or try to) so that he can just take the wand. Also, if there's some sort of passage behind the wall he'd look for that too!
He has 190 cubic feet of stone to work with, so that should be plenty to more or less do what he wants to do and some extra along the rest of the stairwell.
Loot posted.
You get the wand as you see another one near the bottom of the stairs, but otherwise the walls are empty - just two little cubbies.
Take 10 on Spellcraft, I'm assuming this isn't just regular paint.
Moore will collect the other wand too and put it away.
"This is going to be an interesting day." He murmurs to himself.
The paint is enchanted to be difficult to remove, requiring universal solvent to do so. It will make you virtually unmissable, making stealth impossible.
"Heh," Kaja grins a bit, "I almost like the style of it, though."
Xandra shakes her head, "Beware a death of a thousand cuts."
"Huh, that's actually pretty neat. I'll have to develop a spell that uses this stuff." Moore says as they continue along. He keeps an eye out for any further traps!
Vision of the Omniscient Eye cast.
Perception after boosting your Perception score.
Take 10 for 84, then.
As you reach the end of the stairs, it's a small room with a door further in. You can notice tiny runes all over the door, barely perceptible.
Take 10 for 74 on Spellcraft! What do these obviously trap-causing runes do!
The runes allow the door to be controlled from afar, looks like.
"Cresiel, would you please?" Moore asks. "I'm not interested in waiting for them to open the door for us." He gestures at the door itself. "It looks like they ave magic that allows them to control all aspects of this place from afar."
"Of course," Cresiel says, bringing the hammer down - only for the door to juke back, swinging open at the last minute and then slam right back after Cresiel hits air, right at him.
> roll 1d20+20 needs a 20
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+20 needs a 20 --> [ 1d20=1 ]{21}
Which is as effective as slamming a mere door into a solar usually is - not at all. It just bounces off of him, settling back into place.
Moore raises an eyebrow.
"Very well, then just take it off its hinges." Moore says.
Done and done. Once done, you can see ahead is a large auditorium. You're on the stage, able to see all the chairs ahead. They're empty, with a single stairway in the back leading out.
"This wouldn't be bad if we weren't being lead around by the nose," Jetina frowns, "How many more little pranks does he have lined up?"
"We can only proceed ahead." Moore says.
With that in mind he flies forward to go to the stairs, fully expecting something to prevent that...
"Tiresome," Cresiel declares as you fly out - only for clapping to be heard as you cross the stage.
"Bravo!"
"A magnificent theory!"
"Again! Again!"
Ghostly, indistinct images appear in the seats, filling them all up. They look vaguely like efreet, but it's hard to tell. "Go again, go again!"
"While part of me is sad that I can't simply give you all a grand performance, I'll have to decline." Moore says as he proceeds on.
He'll be doing regular Spellcraft checks for 74 every so often for anything magical in the area that may present issues.
As you head to the stage, you can see evocation magic is gathering in the audience - something it do with force magic.
"No, thank you." Moore insists. "Jetina, would you please help me with this by dispelling it?"
Both of us are tossing a Greater Dispel Magic at it.
[blockquote]Rolled 1d20+20 : 17 + 20, total 37[/blockquote] Moore Dispel
[blockquote]Rolled 1d20+20 : 6 + 20, total 26[/blockquote] Jetina Dispel
Your dispel hits, the images and the building evocation both dashed by your magic.
"It looks like your plan is coming apart at the seams." Moore announces. "Maybe you should send your mercenary friends after us so you can just surrender."
With that, he continues along towards the stairs.
The moment you say that, the floor beneath you falls away, a trap door.
Which as you're flying, is as effective as a cup of water to put out all of Fire.
"Honestly, this is getting embarrassing." Moore says. "The slaad are much better at this."
A sigh as he continues along. "Honestly, this is barely above a prank at this point. I'm offended for the sake of all fey kind, really."
"I would hope fey would do better," Cresiel agrees, rather solemnly.
Jetina follows with you, "Well, maybe he's making up for it by learning strategy? But you can't replace natural talent, can you?"
"Ah, so you think this is more akin to a student taking a test?" Moore asks. "That would certainly explain the rather sub-standard level of challenge we've encountered."
"A failing student," Kaja flashes his teeth, all sharpness and whiteness. "In over his head and he knows it."
Meanwhile you reach the stairs going down.
"It certainly seems that way. Perhaps it will give his fellow classmates reason to abandon their current path." Moore says. Onward and downward, with an eye for more traps!
Perception again, -10 circumstance penalty.
Why, that would be 74 then!
As you go down, you notice one stair is slightly elevated.
"Avoid that stair there." Moore advises everyone. "Fly or jump if you need to."
Done.
The door leading on opens, revealing a library. Amid all the books and well lit tables, a voice narrates in Ignan, "Knowledge makes the flames of power burn brighter."
Take 10 for 74 on Spellcraft! Anything magical in this library?
The library is enchanted with various spells to protect the books, as well as a spell to say what was just heard every time a new person enters.
Moore nods and continues on!
"We'll come back later if we have time to see about taking these with us." Moore says. "No sense in spending the time now."
"Excuse me, I disagree," A smooth, cultured voice says. The efreet that comes out wears simple robes and a turban, walking with a fine silvery cane. "I see miscreants have found their way into the library." His gaze is sharp on all of you, taking you in.
Moore turns his attention as well.
"I'm afraid we don't really have a lot of time to deal with the rules of your library." Moore says with an apologetic shrug. "I'd suggest you not try and impede us."
The efreet merely taps his cane on the floor, a sharp noise. "I insist."
Kaja smiles, "You're an efreet, so you don't need to ask to die more than once." Raising his blades, "Your request is granted."
"You think you can stop all of us by yourself? Are you suicidal?" Jetina frowns, "Or controlled or desperate?"
Moore holds a hand up, as if to stop the others.
"Then I'll ask you politely to let us pass without violence." Moore says. "But I have a feeling there's more to you showing up here than just that, so what is it? It's not much of a delaying tactic, either, so it's probably not that."
"Precisely. You see, I am sufficient by myself." The efreet says, "There is no need for others, for by myself I am your doom."
Moore sighs again. "You're not, but I'll give you the benefit of the doubt."
He takes in a breath again. "I am not going to ask you again to move. We wish no harm to anyone who does not stand in our path, so I will ask you a final time to let us pass."
"I will not." The efreet replies back, perfectly calm.
"Very well. Then you'll be a fine example of the wisdom that this war college has offered. Everyone, go!" Moore shouts.
Everyone gets +15 to Init

Do you mind if Xandra casts Gathgorian's Fireball, but changed so it's Xandra's Fireball instead and therefore the same spell but with the benefits of being good instead of evil?
I don't mind her making a version like that, but not on the fly. Would take a bit of research time. Just make a note of it for a todo later and I can whip it up.

The efreet and Kaja tear into each other, all via Kaja. Each blow shreds Kaja as much as the efreet - moreso. The efreet is bloodied for sure, bleeding - but Kaja is a bloody mess, staggering after the last blow. His blood flows freely as the efreet's wounds are healing, faster than Kaja's are by a fair clip.
"Do you see...hah...hah...now? Your battle is doomed against me!" The efreet boasts as...
Cresiel.
Cresiel flies to behind Kaja, a gentle prayer of, "Wash away injuries, retore the righteous and preserve them," chanted as Kaja's wounds heal.
Heal spell. 150 healing which also eliminates the same nonlethal. Xandra. Her HP is adjusted for this round's fast healing in case it matters.

"No more healing out of you!" Moore shouts as he gestures, creating a sudden and enormous pillar of a discordant sound!
He's casting Anti-magic sound.
You create a column of discordant, piercing sound that warps magic in an area. Creatures caught within this area cannot use magic or Supernatural abilities as the sounds created by this spell are so disharmonious. This effect does not stop any magic that is already affecting creatures within this area or stop any active magic effects already in an area.
He is gambling on the idea that he's trying to heal himself through either Supernatural or magical means and this should stop him from being able to do so.
The area is 20ft around and 50ft high, so it should catch them all in it, barring Moore and Jetina who are a bit away.
What's it from? Either's is a searching failure or it's not in the Spell Collection like it should be.
It's a Homebrew spell from... a while ago. Hold on.

From back in B3. Oh, I forgot it does afford an SR check too.
Go ahead and make SR first of all while I refresh myself on it.
Yep, no worries.
[blockquote]Rolled 1d20+31 : 1 + 31, total 32[/blockquote] SR boosting aura is being used
Right. What's the aura bring it up to since hey, natural 1 is here.
I hate how it doesn't always add in my extra additions!!! aaaarghhhh!!! this forums dice thing!!!!!
It brings it to 32+15 = 47
Yeah. While I'm glad to have it for people who need it, it is rather limited and I prefer IRC dicebots.
Thus your anti magic sound settles in and over them as the efreet grunts, "Get off of me, you angelic brute!"
Xandra.
Xandra moves in to strike the efreet!

No escape as Cresiel smiles, a steely look as he holds the efreet down.
Jetina.
Jetina holds, she doesn't want to complicate matters for Kaja further. Moore also holds. This is the Kaja show.

It doesn't have the HP here that rolling the damage is meaningful. Three crits equals kaboom here.
Blood. Kaja grins ear to ear as the efreet's head is now free of its body, kicked aside and shattering into a small flame that sputters out, while its body does the same. You won!
Free act.
"Foolish." Moore says. "Wonderful job as usual, everyone."
Moore picks up whatever's left and gives it a once over.
Spellcraft for 74 on whatever's there. Taking all of it.
Loot updated, go check it out and post once you have.
so noted. Will have to solve the riddle of life one day.
"Whew," Kaja declares, "Nasty trick he had there."
Jetina nods, "I'm surprised he fought alone. Why?"
Xandra frowns, "I've heard of that trick before. It works best alone, letting your foes slay themselves against you while you survive."
"It works especially if you can heal yourself. Thankfully that's easy enough to stop." Moore shakes his head as he looks around. "This is what your war college amounts to?"
He proceeds onward!
"Try harder, failing grade," Cresiel agrees as you head to the door to the next set of stairs. This door is locked.
"Oh, no. Cresiel, we've run into a locked door!" Moore says with a great deal of shock and aghast.
He blinks, then sighs.
"I really need to learn how to use Knock, or at least get an item that can just open this sort of thing." Moore says as a follow up. "Would you please?" He asks Cresiel.
"Hold the door for me, Kaja," Cresiel says.
Kaja does so without comment, while Xandra says, "Worry not, I do not foresee this door evading or attacking you."
Indeed, a few blows shatter the door, revealing another set of stairs going down.
Moore snorts. "See, you do have a sense of humor." He says as he proceeds onwards.
The stairs here are colored. Some stairs are blue, some stars are red and some stares are orange. There is a plaque on the wall which reads in Ignan, "Only the hottest souls are safe."
Does a Spellcraft of 74 tell me anything useful?
It does not. Whatever magic is there may be deep in the stone, deep enough to block such divinations.
"Try and fly over these, if you can." Moore says to the others as he continues forward, flying over the stairs!
Marching order here? Matters.
Moore, Cresiel, Xandra, Kaja Jetina.
Moore flies, followed by Cresiel. You fly over the stairs, only for tremendous blasts of flame to erupt from the stairs, a bright, too intense to look at blue.
Reflex save, -3, both of you.
[22:15] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+58 evasion
[22:15] <Kobot> Nephrite rolled 1d20+58 evasion --> [ 1d20=5 ]{63}
Forgot the -3, so that's 60
> roll 1d20+54 Cresiel evasion
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+54 Cresiel evasion --> [ 1d20=16 ]{70}
The bright blue flames are overwhelming, forcing the two of you back lest you be incinerated, the heat of it enough to make you grimace, even through your protections. You're back with the others, safe.
"Unearthly hot flames," Xandra murmurs, "Be wary of them, Moore."
"Well, I'm sure there's a gimmick. I don't really feel like dealing with it, though." Moore says as he gestures about.
Greater Stone Shape, attempt is going to be made to just push the wall that these stairs are on out of the way so they can just walk around the colored ones, if that makes sense.
Basically make a path right besides it in the wall?
Yeah, imagine just widening the wall along the side by pushing it... ehh, up, or further out?
Thus you go. As you walk, Xandra quietly murmurs, "You do realize it was the blue stairs, Moore?"
"I did gather that." Moore says. "It's the principal of the matter, you know? We don't have time for these shenanigans."
Quietly, "Then may I suggest we use earthquakes to express our displeasure, rather than playing along?" Cresiel suggests.
"The thought had crossed my mind." Moore answers, equally as quietly. "Considering where we are, though, we'd probably need to head back to the top."
"We would," Cresiel says, "Will we?"
Moore makes a disgruntled noise that could be considered a harrumph.
"It seems like this is where they keep some resources, so I think for now we should continue on. If we reach something extremely annoying we'll head back." He decides.
He nods once and continues onward!
So be it. Perception.
Take 10 for 84!
You proceed down to the next floor. The door leading into it is locked.
"Shall I?" Cresiel asks, hammer already ready.
"Please." Moore says.
Cresiel rears back and strikes the door - which makes it wobble like a bowl of jelly and then giggle like a woman. "Oh, how forward!" the door declares, as a jet of door colored slime sprays at Cresiel.
> roll 1d20+29 touch AC
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+29 touch AC --> [ 1d20=14 ]{43}
Cresiel's shield comes up fast as can be, blocking the slime, which sizzles against it.
Moore reaches up and pinches his nose.
I'm guessing this isn't so much spellcraft as some other check, but 74 on Spellcraft if that tells me anything. Otherwise I'd want to try and identify the doorslime if possible.
K:D.
Take 10 for 72
It's some sort of aberration, a shapechanging mimic that's blocking the way. An unusually durable one, no less.
"Kaja," Cresiel says but a word, tired exasperation in every letter.
Kaja approaches, swords out and ready to strike.
"Go ahead and try. If that doesn't work, Xandra, would you...?" He leaves the rest of the statement unsaid, trusting she understands his intent.
He's indicating he'd like her to use her ability to, "make aberrations whole", to be clear. I think she'd understand that since, you know, seer and all. :)
"Hold," Xandra calls, singing a single note of sublime beauty.
At this moment the strange mimic sighs softly, melting down before you into a dot of light. It vanishes away, flying off to places unknown.
"...You'll have to tell me more about that later." Moore says.
Onwards!!!
The next floor is two podiums opposite one another. Each has seating for a few dozen behind them, the podiums themselves on ground raised up a few feet, short stairs leading up to them. Yet as you step in, you see it. Shadowy audience members and shadowy, efreet-like creatures appear at the podiums. They all turn to you, murmurings that sound like speech yet cannot be fully made out.
Moore clicks his tongue.
"I'm beginning to think I picked the wrong building for us to infiltrate. Fine. You want an oration? I'll give you an oration." Moore huffs. He flies up take a spot behind one of the podiums.
The shadowy figure there steps aside, letting you go and speak as you wish.
"You know, there's traditionally a second person here for debates." Moore says as he looks around. "Is this the best your college can do?"
Before you, the opposite shadowy figure solidifies, becoming a portly efreet wearing plate armor. "Oh ho," it says, "Welcome, welcome!"
"Well, what's the topic?" Moore asks.
Take 10 for 74 on Spellcraft -- is this just a magical construct (not a literal construct, I just mean 'it's constructed of magic') or somehow a real thing?
You'd think so, but you'd need to study it with DM or the like and that does take an action. If you want to try it with him right here, feel free to say so and we'll resolve that.
"Applied morality," The efreet declares. "You have knowledge from divinations that an ally may soon betray you. Is it right for you to crush this ally and take his lands and slaves as your own?"
Nah, that's okay.
Ah, so if he uses his own morality, he'll surely fail, so with that in mind... he takes a breath.
Moore shakes his head. "Of course not. Divinations can be wrong. You can't always rely on them." A gesture, as if he's talking to the audience for flair, "You also said an ally -may- soon betray you. You don't know for certain they will."
Another gesture, this time at the efreet. "Perhaps it's efreet culture to immediately crush this ally, but why not instead simply let them prove their loyalty? Let them hang themselves with the rope you give them by allowing their actions to continue. If they prove themselves to betray you, then you have every right to interdict on them, but if you suspect an ally and then you're wrong -- you're the one who ends up looking like a failure."
The fat efreet nods along as Xandra watches him intensely, eyes narrow. Cresiel merely stands where he is, while Jetina listens in.
"Ah, a page from the great Crimson Firebrand's book," The fat efreet smiles, "Yes yes, let your allies prove themselves of hang themselves. It is well known that the Alliance of the Bonfires proved their own perfidy and weakness through this very method. For otherwise they would have been crushed before they could resist the Crimson Firebrand and his establishment of the City of Brass."
Moore gestures again. "Well, is there anything else?"
"Of course," The efreet chuckles, "Your harem is well kept and protected, yet you have evidence at least one of your harem has been unfaithful and sullied herself. Evidence suggests that someone in your own house has done so. How do you find and punish the offender, without defying the rights given by the Grand Sultan to all worthy efreet?"
Would K:P be the check for what those rules are?
By all means. Also sorry about the delay, Seira had a huge expo post I had to type out.
It's all good. Take 10 for 94.
The rules are fairly simple on the surface. Of course, long eons of time have added all sorts of crags, twists and expectations, but they boil down to this.
- Obey the Grand Sultan, as his will is supreme.
- Honor the Grand Sultan, as is only right.
- Do not take the life of another efreet without just cause.
- Do not defile female efreet, lest you be castrated or slain.
- Do not covet or steal another efreet's harem, lest you suffer the above fate.
- Always obey those of your family above you and wisely direct those below you.
- If you must do such things, come to the brothels the Sultan establishes and provides to all worthy efreet.
So, with that in mind, logically speaking, you're well within your rights to slay the offending efreet for their actions, excepting if this was someone in your own family above you?
One could argue it as such, certainly. The reality varies a bit, but that sort of thing is invariably ugly and often a political incident.
"So, the answer depends on certain factors, but I'll answer in a general sense. You are within your right to kill the offending efreet for their actions. If they happen to be above you in your family, then there are further considerations to be made, but it will end up being a rather scandalous incident regardless." Moore answers.
"Indeed," the efreet declares, "It is why women are kept in silken chambers and sweet-smelling paradises. Look at your women, parading around with you as warriors? However can you ensure their purity?"
Xandra merely withstands that comment without reaction and then adds, "Because I serve a higher purpose than fleshy carnality."
Jetina merely glances at Kaja, who smiles with far too many sharp, pointy teeth. "As Jetina wishes to say but clearly does not wish to do personally, rot in Hell."
"It's not real." Moore says to the others. "Anyway, I think I've proven I understand your culture well enough, and as the victor I'll be moving on."
"Not so fast," the efreet says, "You are still my enemy. Give me one reason not to strike you all down now."
"Because it's more sensible to respect and fear an enemy than to foolishly lose a battle you cannot win." Moore says.
"Really?" The efreet leans forward, "Why is it a battle I can't win?"
Since this seems to be a construct that uses efreet logic, I'd like to use whatever is the appropriate check for some sort of historical or religiously historical battle that's basically used as a 'don't bite off more than you can chew' lesson
The most famous is the Battle of the Bonfires, where the Crimson Firebrand lured the Alliance of the Bonfires in and utterly crushed them to the last efreet. He tricked them into thinking he was less than he was, and in that the death of all his opposition grew.
"That sort of question is what led to the Battle of Bonfires." Moore retorts.
"You claim to have the same power and crushing strength of the Crimson Firebrand?" The efreet hisses, gesturing, "You have the power to inspire others to impossible strength, as he did?"
Moore grins. "Why yes, in fact, I do."
Give me a Diplo check there, I suppose. You said close enough to the right thing.
Take 10 for 96.
The efreet bows his head, "Only the bold shall triumph," he says, fading away along with the fake audience.
"You see? I even win your debates." Moore says with a scoff as he looks for a door to proceed onwards.
There is indeed a door on the other side as Cresiel advances on it, hammer ready.
Jetina scoffs a bit, "You're absolutely right, too."
Moore nods to Cresiel!
A few swings later and another door is down. More stairs going down - this time normal looking stairs, at least.
Moore proceeds again along first, with an eye for traps!
Take 10 for 74 on Perception.
Nothing. You reach the bottom door, which isn't even locked for a change of pace. Nonetheless Cresiel hefts his hammer, "Just in case?"
Moore laughs. "Sure."
A triplet of blows batters the door down. Ahead is a large entry room - a door leading outside, windows on it letting you see the grounds beyond. There's also a door right next to this door.
The room itself is decorated with fine stonework and design, though nothing truly exceptional on a glance.
Take 10 for Spellcraft of 74, anything ambient in the air?
"This seems rather... barren for a place with classrooms." Moore says as he goes over to the door that isn't the door outside to check it.
"Any building is, sans those who give it life and spirit," Xandra says, "What we see is a stone coffin, awaiting the bodies it is due."
Nothing is in the air beyond magic you've already detected.
"Right, but I guess what I mean is... mm." Moore shakes his head as he tries the other door. "It's hard to explain."
"It's barren," Kaja says, "There's signs of life but no true life. Like it's a set piece on a play's stage."
The other door isn't locked.
Moore nods and goes to open that door!
Perhaps predictably, it leads to stairs going down.
"Let's see if they have anything else in here at all." Moore says as he proceeds downward!!
You immediately notice these stairs go down and down - no sign of an immediate bottom. Just spiraling depths of stairs, deeper and deeper.
Take 10 for 74 on spellcraft, anything noteworthy or just super deep stairs???
Just super deep stairs.
"Do you all think there's any value in taking all the books they have in their library?" Moore asks the others. "We can investigate the underground after we level this entire place."
"Yes, but later," Cresiel says, "Let us smash the evil and then worry of such things."
Here Xandra frowns, "The death of knowledge is the death of hope, for in holy wisdom we all grow stronger. Even if the books there are the book of evil, in those others like us may find the way to save others."
Kaja glances back and forth and adds, "They're just books."
Moore nods. "In that case, let's go outside and see what awaits us. Actually, before we do that..."
Moore is going to spend a few turns doing the following:
Harmonize (30m), allows songs to be used as a movement action.
Redo all his bardic songs, then cast Refreshment on himself.
I figure it's been at least 10 minutes by now, so I'll just take to the time to turn them all back on since we aren't in any immediate danger.
This happens without incident.
Have you gone back down the stairs at all yet?
No, sorry, intent was to go back to the front door area for all this.
Perception.
Take 10 for 84
As you turn away from the stairs going down, you here a whistling woosh from far below, a sound rising up.
"Move!" Moore shouts, casting Haste to make sure everyone can do so!
Haste, +1 attack rolls, armor class and reflex saves, extra attack on a full attack, +30 enhancement bonus to movement speed. CL30, 30r.
Everyone begins to move, but suddenly great, sticky strands of webbing fly out, lashing out at all of you.
Haste goes off at least.
> roll 1d20+53
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+53 --> [ 1d20=19 ]{72}
Touch ACs?
Everyone has one lower than 72, as far as I can calculate.
Guh! All of you are now held by the tendrils, no damage but they're stuck to you, all spider-silk sticky. You have a problem!
Chance to act, everyone. One round's worth of actions.
I know we changed Freedom of Movement to give a bonus to CMD rather than to let you get out of grapples for free, but in the spirit of the spell, would you see it as having an impact here?
Also, how about Surefooted Stride, which lets you move in difficult terrain?
Stride wont' matter, FoM will help escape, yes. It'll apply to Escape Artist checks here and certain other actions.
Let's have Jetina toss a Mass Freedom of Movement then and see if we can all managed to get ourselves out of this STICKY SITUATION!!!! aaahahahaha...
Jetina attempts to cast, the grasp getting her to cry out as it resists, trying to pull at her.
Concentration.
Does Concentration exist as a PF skill? I feel like this came up before. I also may just be missing it.
It's now caster level + ability. For example, for a 13th level sorcerer with a Charisma of 20 it's +18.
phone posting so slow. I think that's 41 then
[blockquote]Rolled 1d20+41 : 16 + 41, total 57[/blockquote]
Spell goes off. What's everyone going to try and do then? Escape Artist? CMB to escape? Something else?
CMB makes the most sense. Moore will switch his aura to dex just in case it helps at all
"Escape!" Jetina cries, as...
CMB for everyone, then. Good luck.
so it looks like FoM is a CMD bonus. It also looks like any bonuses apply to CMB so as a reminder everyone has +31 due to songs and stuff. I'll just roll assuming CMB with no bonus from FoM. If we need to hash it out tonight when I'm not phone posting let me know.
moore CMB, +dex aura, +songs [blockquote]Rolled 1d20+81 : 8 + 81, total 89[/blockquote]

With great, heroic efforts all of you manage to slip free, between Freedom of Movement and your own powers - for now, escaping them and...
Chance to act unbound. I suggest you use it wisely.

"Back and out!" Moore shouts.
Idea is to get out of the room and back to the one with the two doors and then just shut the door.
The party rushes back out and slams the doors shut. This works - but moments later you feel the door shake, pounded against.
Jetina takes a breath, "Close!"
Kaja has his scimitars ready now, "Ah, so he's done playing, is he?"
"Well, if we go outside, we could be surrounded, so let's just get away from the door." Moore says. He moves to go back to the stairs they started near originally!
"If it wants to try and get us, it has to come out here." Moore explains. "Jetina -- we have a moment, would you aid us with your valor?"
He's asking her to cast Celestial Valor, to be clear.
As you go back Jetina bows her head, "Raziel, bestow us with your courage!" You make it back - as you hear a loud tearing, the double doors giving way as the tendrils give chase. Xandra looks back, "They will pursue us, and I foresee quite a ways. We must run far or stop them now."

Let's book it! Haha! Get it?? we're going to a library?? book it??? ????
please laugh
Hah hah ha haha.
Feel better?
Anyway, what's your movement speed?
With Haste it is 90 ft flying. Xandra's is 120 flying and Jetina's is... 60 flying.
Okay, Dexterity checks. +4 bonus for each 10ft you're above 60ft and -4 for each 10ft you're below 60ft. We're basing it off their speed this time so it will roll an unadjusted check.
everyone gets +15 due to the dex aura. Let me just roll and do the math after..

By the way, are you still on the road/traveling?
You all run, run, run, run! Up to the library, the tendrils falling behind and ultimately not pursuing. Whew!
I am. Though not traveling, just out of town.
"All right, I'll handle the grunt work here. Any opinions on how we tackle this from here?" Moore asks the others. "I'm fine just leveling this entire place with earthquakes, but I wonder if they have something to prevent us from doing that."
He's going to zip around and just throw any and every book into his bags. Since he has The Spell I can never Remember How To Spell (BA) on, he'll immediately glean knowledge of the books, so if there's anything interesting in any of them please let me know.
Go ahead and define what you'd consider interesting.
Great question. Um... hmmm. I guess any knowledge about the college itself that might help them know how to help destroy it.
Knowledge of super amazing treasure locations!!
Uhh... I don't know other than that. Quest hooks???
I hate to be that guy, but I'm going to need more specifics than 'quest hooks'. Something that doesn't depend so much on DM judgment.
I don't know how you would define them.
Moore would define them as interesting mysteries or places, people, or items that are supposedly lost with hints on how to go find them. He could corroborate these with K:P checks as needed to figure out if that knowledge is faulty or just outdated.
I hate to be that guy agai-kidding!
There's several books with promising things along those lines. You can mark them and setthem aside for study later, if you like. There's also a lot of general lore with a splash of sylvan lore, fey lore and the lore of Fire.
I can get detailed right now if you want, but it'll take time. Your call.
We can do it post-mission. So anything about the college itself? Construction, weaknesses (not that they'd mention them of course specifically, but anything that they could use against them)
If not it's fine, he'll spend the time to just take every single book though. I guess in hindsight he should've used a spell for that but whatever.
No sign of that. Give me a d100 as you work.
[blockquote]Rolled 1d100 : 53, total 53[/blockquote]
You quickly notice one point - there's a lot of books and scanning each one takes a few seconds. This will take some time to scan and clear them all. Are you okay with that?
How about just using Limited Wish to move all the books into my bag? That may be beyond a 6th level sorc spell though, I admit... I can't think of any spell to just move things for me. Obviously teleporting them won't work so it'd have to be some sort of almost levitation sort of thing.
That's reasonable for it, sure. Want to?
Yes, let's go with that plan.
With a burst of magic, the books flow steadily and smoothly into your bag, one after another.
Moore nods. "All right, let's go back to where we started, prepare ourselves for a final assault, and then be done with this place."
Intent is to go back to the original entry points.
You fly back up to the roof. Yet as you reach the final stairs ahead, you see it - absolute darkness. A darkness that covers everything ahead, blotting it out even to your true seeing enhanced senses.
"Utterdark or worse," Xandra declares, "Caution, we are anticipated."
Take 10 on Spellcraft for 89 to ID the spell and the spellcaster.
The spell is Bleak Utterdark and the caster is Majanal.
Feel free to make an K:N check on Majanal.
Take 10 for 94 on K:N.
EDIT: Also, can you tell me how Bleak Utterdark differs from Utterdark? I don't see it in the spell list.
It's a custom spell. From your spellcraft, it saps the energy and ability of good creatures within it on top of the normal properties of utterdark. Goodly creatures come in and corpses come out, ideally for the spellcaster.
It's one of those spells that isn't posted because it's a bad guy spell.
would protection from negative energy keep it from doing damage or anything of that sort?
Also, i did a K:N on the caster.
You don't think it would.
Majanal is an Unseelie Fey, a pixielike creature who savors death and destruction. While a powerful mage, his main entertainment is tearing the bodies of his prey apart. He is akin to a hunting spider or other such thing in nature, uncaring of anything but his own needs and desires. The Queen of Air and Darkness dislikes him, and as such, he spends little time at Court. He wanders freely, engaging in whatever trouble catches his eye.
"We can't pass through it without harming ourselves, unless all of you can somehow fool reality into becoming evil." Moore explains to the others. "I know traditionally extremely powerful things that create light can suppress this stuff but I don't know that we have anything like that. Also, we're up against an Unseelie Fey named Majanal." He adds.
Cresiel hefts his hammer and smiles grimly. "Then we go out the sides. Shall I?"
Moore nods. "By all means."
Smash after smash wrecks the inner wall, collapsing it out. A passage out is revealed.
"Hurry," Jetina murmurs, "Before they catch us, there's surely forces above."
Kaja nods at that, "Now!"
Moore nods and heads out first!
Gimme Perception real quick.
Take 10 for 84
You can hear rustling, bony noises from within the absolute darkness above as you all escape out.
"Above us!" Moore shouts to the others. "Down!"
Idea is to hopefully have everyone move a good deal away so they can't just come out an immediately attack us.
Thus you look down - and see a second problem. Another cloud of darkness is by the ground floor entrance, blocking vision of the ground.
Chance to react to that.
So we're closer to the top one -- so let's go up and diagonally away from it so we're at least level with the cloud but hopefully a decent bit away from it.
Okay, how fast are you all moving? At your own speeds, in sync or something else?
Jetina is 60, so a double move makes her 120 -- let's keep pace with that.
The party flees away, getting 240ft between them and the cloud. It's then that the emerge. Six chariots of steel, driven by spectral horses, skeletal things more like ghostly images than material things. In each chariot is the same figure - a pixie-like thing standing atop the upper lip of the chariot, perhaps a hair taller than you are. It is clad in brown and black head to toe, save for splashes of dull yellow.
The pixie has a knife in hand, smiling ear to ear, "There they are," the six of them call at once, "Go!"
So all of them look the same, right? So they could just be mirror images (but obviously aren't because who would try that)?
Yes and yes (theoretically to the second).
Note that Mirror's Mimickry is banned in case that came to mind.
"I'm doubtful those are mirror images, but once we get close enough I can verify. For now, let's let them come to us if we can!" Moore says to the others.
He then raises his voice a bit more.
"Majanal! I don't know what an Unseelie like you thinks you're going to accomplish here, but I promise you that you'll regret meeting us!" Moore then shouts across at the figures.
Let's go ahead and hit init, then.
Everyone gets +15, as per usual.

Ray Deflection on himself.

Mm...
"And for good measure!" Moore shouts, emboldening his allies with extra fervor!

A laugh from the Majanal, high and mocking, as Cresiel holds his ground. "Do you have a plan?" he asks quickly.
Cresiel is up, asking before he commits to his strategy.

Kaja readies himself as well at that, blades glistening in the flames of Fire.
Readying a chance to take his turn if something comes close enough to get chopped up. He's directly at your side, so most anything that comes at you will be in range of his blades. Xandra's up. She's the proverbial artillery here, so long range is her thing. Go.
Since Majanal has so nicely collected himself...
Xandra makes a gesture of her own!
Spending a smite on Rain of Desolation and dropping it on the black mist area as well as Majanal. I don't think it goes down far enough to affect the other cloud, unfortunately.

Touch AC, Moore?
So, let me ask you this -- I have Ray Deflection, so does it actually need to hit me first (i.e. beat my AC) or does that not matter?
EDIT: Actually, nevermind -- it's just deflected and not REflected, so it's a moot point!
Although I guess I should also ask if this counts as something Ray Deflection ... deflects? The wording is not terribly clear on if it's JUST rays or anything like that?
Any ranged touch so that was a remarkably good choice. Well chosen.
TING! The ray is deflected away as it comes close, off into the horizon as...
Jetina and Majanal. Go Jetina.
"Really?! Mirror image?!" Moore shouts. "REALLY?!"
Jetina will hold to heal, presuming Majanal isn't just going to throw a tantrum and run away.
Slowly six gather together, becoming one. One chariot, one pixie, gasping for air. "B...bastard! You bastard! BastardbastardBASTARD!" Snarling now, making a curious gesture and snapping in Sylvan, "Open winter's cruel gate!" A piercing, bitter blast of black ice and wind blows through all of you, like a tempest.

That beats everyone's SR, right?
Goodness, I would hope so.
Fort saves, all. Piercing cold damage so immunity doesn't help and resistance is moot. Also note if you're immune to negative levels.
I think everyone is protected from negative levels via either armor, class abilities, or Jetina's Deathlessness.
Everyone gets +16 to saves, as a reminder.

240 cold damage all. It's piercing so half to immunes and full to resistance.
Everyone made the save except Jetina. Pain. Cresiel also has mettle so none to him. Same with Moore.
Frigid agony as you're all frozen, the cold unearthly and chilling all of you to the bone. It hurts tremendously as you hear Jetina scream, her entire left side frozen over. Still pained and coughing, "There! BREAK!" A scream, a shout of fury as suddenly?
Fort again, Jetina.

The sunlance hits Majanal dead on, making him scream. His screams echo about as a nova of sunlight slams into him, then the sunburst explodes out. His chariot breaks asunder, leaving him struggling to stay in the air.
That it for Xandra?
It is.
"Cresiel, do you think you can knock him out?" Moore asks.
"I can enjoy trying quite a lot," Cresiel retorts, tensed, ready.

Definitely lower than that since her base AC is 53 with her armor.
> roll 1d8
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d8 --> [ 1d8=5 ]{5}
Jetina is dazed for 5 rounds.
The beam strikes Jetina right on, leaving her reeling from the impact. She wobbles about as...
Kaja.
Kaja looks up, "Dispel the darkness," he calls.
Holding, not much he can do. ???1 is up.
At this the metal ring is thrown again from the darkness, this time coming for Kaja.
> roll 1d20+53
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+53 --> [ 1d20=3 ]{56}
But Kaja brings his scimitars up, catching it and parrying it back, sending it flying away. As that clangs away?
Moore.
"Easier said than done!" Moore shouts.
"Actually..."
Take 10 on Bluff for 80 for the epic skill usage to assume the alignment of evil to be able to see what's actually inside the utterdarks.
There's one problem with your cunning plan, Moore. The DC for it is 85, not 80.
Oh, that's easy enough -- I thought it was 80. I'll just use 5 more Greater Improv points. So I'm using 11 instead of 6.
Assume False Alignment
You can maintain a bluff that fools reality. This is identical to display false alignment, except that you are treated as having that alignment for the sake of effects. A lawful evil character assuming a chaotic good alignment would be immune to the extra damage fro a holy weapon and take extra damage from an unholy weapon. A creature that suspects that you have assumed a false alignment can overcome this effect with a successful opposed Sense Motive check against your Bluff check.
This ability has no effect on qualifying for feats, prestige classes or other personal abilities, which continue to use your true alignment.
One important point that I should point here: If you're wielding a holy weapon or anything that slams an evil user, you're going to hit on that. Fair warning. Also, what alignment? CE? NE? LE?
I am not wielding anything that would negatively affect an evil user. I'll go with Lawful Evil.
It's 20ft within it - a tall efreet, barechested and with flowing blue pants. Metal rings cover its arms and wrists, dozens of thin metal rings. Almost like chakrams but not quite, it looks on with a steely gaze, surveying the battle beyond.
And the other one?
Below is a hooded figure, clad in shadows and constantly gesturing, chanting, weaving magic. It's hard to tell from here, but he looks larger than a human.
"I'll try, but I don't know that I can." Moore says.
Did the bluff take my standard?
Yes.
"Efreet in the top cloud and... Oh, is that...? Mmmph, someone hooded in the bottom! Do what you can to dispel the darkness!" Moore shouts to the others. "Cresiel, help Jetina recover if you can!"
Does the bottom figure look anything like the one from the Group of Assholes from before?
You mean the ones who attacked you on your last raid?
Yeah.
It does not look like.
Okay. That's it for this turn, then.
Init is Moore (46) > Xandra (32) > Cresiel (31) > Hooded Man (30) > Jetina = Majanal (28) > Kaja (27) > Ring Efreet (23)
Xandra is up. Go.
Xandra gestures again and points at the lower area of darkness!
Dropping another Rain of Desolation on that area, hopefully that will dispel it and possibly the jerk in it at the same time. Using a Smite to increase the DC checks too.
Gimme 15 dispels.

<Kobot> Kotono rolled 1d20+17 Moore is getting all the save boosters today --> [ 1d20=13 ]{30}
Icy cold rain pours down, magic dissolving into acrid smoke as you momentarily quench Fire around the hooded man. He doesn't make a sound, instead kneeling, sinking into the ground and retreating out of sight.
Jetina.
She is dazed, alas.
Indeed, whoops.
Init is Moore (46) > Xandra (32) > Cresiel (31) > Hooded Man (30) > Jetina = Majanal (28) > Kaja (27) > Ring Efreet (23)
Kaja holds and calls, "Our foes are broken before us! Can you get rid of the darkness?"
"The one in the lower one ran!" Moore shouts. "Kaja, grab that Unseelie and let's just get away from this cloud up here! He'll have to come out if he wants to keep attacking us!"
> roll 20d6 meanwhile
<Kobot> Kotono rolled 20d6 meanwhile --> [ 20d6=68 ]{68}
Kaja races down to where Majanal landed, lying in a pool of his own blood.
The ring efreet makes a strange gesture, but nothing happens that you can tell.
Go.
"Everyone, down!" Moore shouts. "Cresiel, help Jetina out if you can!"
He means with like, Mass Heal or something that will remove her dazed condition, specifically.
Moore meanwhile flies down, trying to get as far away as he can, as he makes a gesture and points towards one of the more close buildings.
I don't remember exactly, but I think there were two buildings nearby the lightning tower place, Moore is picking one of them (let's say to the right of the tower if his back is to it) and Earthquaking at it. That's obviously not going to destroy it, but it'll start to make their point.
Gimme a CL on that.
Scratch that line. He's going to grab the Teleport Beacon first and then fly down. If he can still cast, let me know, but I'm guessing not.
Moore flies down, getting closer to the ground with the beacon in hand.
Okay. Xandra.
Xandra flies down as well and makes a gesture herself towards one of the buildings!
Since Sorc/Wiz doesn't get Earthquake for reasons unknown, she's going with Iceberg. If there's some larger-scale spell you can think of that would be more appropriate here, let me know.
[14:33] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+31 CL
[14:33] <Kobot> Nephrite rolled 1d20+31 CL --> [ 1d20=11 ]{42}
Does Xandra actually get Iceberg, though?
It is an Sorc/Wiz 9 Evocation spell, so I don't see why not.
The evocation spells are for 10th+ level spells for warmage, 9th and lower has a normal spell list. Admittedly a finicky and small one, but they have it.
That's... exceptionally confusing, but whatever. We'll just go with Meteor Swarm then I guess.
Yeah, understanding that it's a patch because warmage really doesn't scale well into epic. It's the base class I'm least satisfied within 3.5, to the point I may rebuild Xandra one day over it. It's working right now on a patch job.
Xandra fires meteors are the building, explosions slamming into them. It's a solid hit as Cresiel chants, healing power coming over Jetina.
Mass Heal. Jetina's up.
Jetina heads down to join the others!
Guess who also doesn't know earthquake! Shocking, I know.
Init is Moore (46) > Xandra (32) > Cresiel (31) > Hooded Man (30) > Jetina = Majanal (28) > Kaja (27) > Ring Efreet (23)
Note to self: Earthquakes are good.
Kaja reaches Majanal, checking him and scooping him up.
The ring efreet holds for the moment, moving deeper into the utterdark.
Moore.
NOW it's time for Earthquake from our good Pixie over around that same building that just got meteor'ed.
[blockquote]Rolled 1d20+19 : 19 + 19, total 38[/blockquote]
"Remind me in the future that we need to come up with a better way of laying a large area like this low." Moore says through a sigh.
The earth begins to quake and shake, the building shaking all over. The ground is heaving, the riot of stone underway.
"We learn, we advance," Cresiel says, completely deadpan.
Xandra. Takes a round to finish so I'll describe it as the round goes.
Xandra gestures in another direction this time!
[21:08] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+31 xandra cl
[21:08] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20+31 xandra cl --> [ 1d20=10 ]{41}
More meteors on a different nearby building.
Meteors strike true, taking chunks out of another building. The ground's violently spasming now, out of control as...
Cresiel.
"Another?" Cresiel asks, calling over to you.
"Yes. If they didn't evacuate while we were gallivanting in the tower it's their own fault." Moore answers. "We'll quit this place soon enough."
The tower becomes to shake, quivering along with the other earthquake. "Cowards!" Cresiel's voice booms, "Come out from your earthen dens and confront us or die crushed beneath them!"
Init is Moore (46) > Xandra (32) > Cresiel (31) > Hooded Man (30) > Jetina = Majanal (28) > Kaja (27) > Ring Efreet (23)
Jetina.
Jetina will hold, not much for her to do at the moment since the enemy is, well, you know.
Kaja does the same, ring efreet moves a little more to the side. Moore.
At this point the buildings aren't collapsing, but they are swaying between the impacts and damages.
Moore briefly looks at the teleport blocker in his hand before he looks across the college.
He then activates it again!
Nah, fuck them. That's his turn.
Xandra.
Let's drop a True Meteor Swarm on... another building! Kaboom!
[21:52] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+31 xandra cl
[21:52] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20+31 xandra cl --> [ 1d20=5 ]{36}
The larger meteor hits hard, slamming into and through the building, causing the already shaken building to collapse. A din of noise and dust rises up from it, seeming to slam into your ears even from here. Yet one cannot deny the building is down as...
Cresiel.
"Again?" Cresie shouts over everything.
"Again!" Moore shouts.
Jetina will hold on her turn assuming nothing else happens.
The earth protests again, and this time the flaming ground gets rain. A rain of stone, the tower shuddering and starting to lurch, while other buildings are beginning to fall. It's working!
Kaja holds and gets up to you, naturally. Ring thrower is basically hiding there and not attacking. Moore.
"Either they never expected this to happen, or... they don't care about this entire campus?" Moore asks quietly.
"Overconfidence, or...?" He shakes his head and gestures again at another area.
[22:10] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+19 Moore CL
[22:10] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20+19 Moore CL --> [ 1d20=5 ]{24}
Another QUAK.
"Cowardice! Running to save themselves!" Cresiel bellows, as now the tower falls. Buildings are collapsing, a din tremendous as more and more falls.
"It's working!" Xandra says, "Let us escape triumphant!"
Yeah, if everything is basically in ruins, then Moore will grab the blocker on his turn and Cresiel can get us all out of here, or Jetina can. Majanal can come with us! :)
Thus you return to Celestia, intact and whole. Majanal is laid down by Cresiel, who shakes his head. "He died on impact. He may have survived what overcame him, but the fall was fatal."
I figured when he "died" his body would've vanished or something like that? I thought that happened when people were on planes like that. Or are fey different?
It depends on creature type. Outsiders generally don't leave bodies. Fey do.
Thing is, outsiders are a soul that is also a body. They're pure spirit, pure ethos, pure alignment. There's no body to be left behind because they were merely projecting one. It's an entirely spiritual existence. Elementals are the same thing, as they're essentially masses of elemental power.
Okay. Well that's fine either way, it removes him as a threat since he won't just reform somewhere else. I guess unless the Queen of Air and Darkness wants something from him.
"Unfortunate, but at least we removed him from Creation so he can no longer do harm to anyone else." Moore says.
May as well see what he had on himself and also go over all the books we got.
"Speak with dead and similar spells exist, too," Cresiel says, "He will not escape our questions."
"I wonder, do you think he was behind all the antics in the tower?" Moore asks. He shakes his head. "Either way, yes, you're right. What's the proper protocol for something like this? Do we take him to the same place as we did Duran?"
"Wasn't there talk of a menagerie there as well from our spy?" Jetina asks, "Was that mistaken or old information?"
"Anything is possible." Moore says. "They may have had to leave to go deal with the other operations. I'll ask her to investigate if there's anything left at the college now. Cresiel, can you handle Majanal? I'll talk to Melia." Moore adds.
Nods all around.
OOC question first: What sort of questions do you want out of Majanal through speak with dead? You can get as loose or specific as you want here, down to dictating questions if you want.
I'd like to find out why he was at the War College. If it was just a flight of fancy, then whatever, but assuming it was more than that I'd want to see how far down that relationship goes. If the Queen of Air and Darkness is moving along with the Grand Sultan then that is A Thing.
Noted, we'll cover it after Melia.
Melia is found in her office, deep in a tome and scribbling notes as she reads. She's annotating the book, grumbling, "Fucking astral loons," under her breath before, "You're back."
Moore nods. "We didn't run into that mercenary group at all, but we ran into an Unseelie named Majanal." Moore explains. "Could you do some surveying of the War College and see if somehow they were expecting us and moved operations or anything? If they've got underground stores, we should go back and put an end to them."
"Yeah, sorry. Nature of rumors, especially ones forced out in a hurry," Melia admits. "Yeah, can do, I'll see what I can shake out now. This one in a hurry too?"
"No, take your time." Moore says. "They should be in complete disarray right now, so I think you can be thorough."
"Yeah, I'll get on it. Just one thing. Friend of mine asked for information about you," she says, "Vennax III, a marut with water elemental blood in him. Don't know how it happened either, so don't ask. Yes, his gears are quite damp. I'm supposed to tell him something, that's how this sort of give and take works with my sources. So, what do you want told to him? Anything to avoid?"
"Anything about Io is off limits, as well as my current role against the efreet and slavery." Moore answers after some consideration. "Anything else you deem worth the price of information you are free to say, unless you want something specific."
"That'll do," Melia says, "You pay information with information. Gotta keep up my end or I'll lose contacts and be less effective at my job."
"If it ever requires an audience or something like that, let me know." Moore says. "Oh, that does remind me... do you know much about the Silverbrow Consortium? I have had some dealings with them in the past but haven't reached out recently. If you hear of anything that they might need, I've been looking for a way to get on their good side."
"Mission accepted," Melia says and from there...
Anything else here?
Not here. We can move on!
If there's nothing pressing Moore will go through the efreet books.
As you head out and go to the books, Cresiel falls in step with you. Grias lingers behind, the solar giving the lantern archon a look, which gets him to float away quickly.
"Ahem," Cresiel clears his throat. "Majanal was there mostly by reputation and chance. No sign of any alliance with the Unseelie Queen."
"That's a relief." Moore says with a glance towards Cresiel. "Hm. I don't know what else to ask of him at this point, then. I'm happy to just give his body up to the higher echelons to do what they will, be it gathering more information from him or not. I'm glad we removed him as a player, though, I don't think he realized what he was getting himself into."
"I asked other questions," Cresiel continues after a nod, "Those mercenaries we missed by hours, nothing related to it. He heard they took a new job."
Moore nods. "Just chance, then. All right. We may want to deal with them at some point, but we may as well not make more enemies for ourselves than is necessary."
"Understood," Cresiel says, "The rest of the questions were spent on clarifications. Do you have any others before his body is dealt with?"
"Hm. Ask him if he knows who Syllen is and where he got these bracers." Moore holds up a pair. "He was using these, and they appear to be part of some sort of set. I was going to do research on it, but if he knows anything we may as well use it to our advantage."
"I will inform you,' Cresiel agrees.
Anything else here?
Nothing. He'll catch up with Grias now if he has anything.
Grias floats back up once Cresiel is gone, "The nerve," he murmurs, "Moore, welcome back and congratulations. I have a letter for you."
"Don't take it personally." Moore says with a smile and a pat to the top of Grias. "All right, let's see it."
Once offered, Moore will read the letter!
Make an immediate Will save.
[15:36] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+46 (+3 more if evil)
[15:36] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20+46 (+3 more if evil) --> [ 1d20=7 ]{53}
You don't read it.
Some instinct of yours screams at you. Screams at you to stop, to look away.
You drop the envelope and tear your gaze from the letter.
Moore gasps, then tries to identify the magic on the letter, if there is any!
"Grias, who delivered this?" Moore asks, quickly.
Take 10 for 89 on spellcraft. Also want to identify the caster of any magic on it, if possible.
There's no magic on it whatsoever.
"It delivered by Sanez from Brightwater," he says quickly, bobbing up and down, "Is something wrong with it?"
"I don't know. Something instinctively told me not to read it." Moore says. "There's no magic on it, but..."
Moore tentatively holds the letter up towards the light of Chronias to see if anything obvious happens.
You hold the letter and go to a window, uplifting it into the light from above. In your hand is a coiled viper, a poisonous thing ready to strike. A twisted, burning coil of magic, watching and waiting.
Does it still not radiate magic at this point?
Going to take the time to find out? Serious question since time may matter here.
Yes, he'll risk it. The magic may be too "dumb" to notice, after all. We'll see.
There is indeed magic around it. You can study it if you want to take the time to do so.
I will do so, take 10 for 89 on Spellcraft. I would also like to discover the caster, if possible.
As you study, the viper stirs and lunges at you.
Will again.
[12:28] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+46+15 will
[12:28] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20+46+15 will --> [ 1d20=13 ]{74}
Using 15 more Greater Improv points for the will save.
You tear your vision away from it again. You feel a sense of danger from it.
Do not look too closely at the enemy's works, not this. This is poison, Moore. The form of it betrays the throne it came from.
Is it possible to identify the caster without, uh... "looking" at the spell?
It is not.
They'll just have to find another way, then.
Moore lets go then tries to simply be rid of it!
Greater Dispel Magic.
[13:01] <Nephrite> roll 1d20+20 dispel
[13:01] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20+20 dispel --> [ 1d20=17 ]{37}
No good, nothing happens at all.
Is it still a cobra at this point?
"I really need to get stronger magic for this sort of thing..." Moore mumbles as he tries something else!
Trying Antimagic Ray.
[13:06] <Nephrite> roll 1d20 touch
[13:06] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d20 touch --> [ 1d20=12 ]{12}
A viper, but yes. In case that changes your action, I'll give you a chance to confirm it.
Snake, cobra, viper, whatever! No, same action.
The beam hits it. Nothing seems to change on it.
Moore blinks. "Grias, go get Jetina and Xandra for me, and hurry."
For the time being, he'll just keep an eye on it!
So he won't hold it and will just watch it, if it does anything suspicious he'll... do something.
Done and done. Xandra is first and takes one look at it, "Anathema," she says in a low voice, sword drawn in an instant. "Where did you get that, Moore?"
"Someone from Brightwater." Moore says. "Once we... contain or destroy it I intend to go there and find out what's going on."
Xandra positions herself in front of it, sword out and ready. At the same time Jetina jobs up, "Moore, what's going on?"
"Great question." Moore answers. "Can you try and dispel this thing?"
"No. My power is not sufficient. We need the light." Xandra replies, holding an arm out to keep Jetina away. "We need aid from above."
Moore gestured to try and contain it!
Wall of Stone, he basically wants to try and put it inside a stone box.
Done and done, no resistance to that.
"Let's go, then." Moore says. "Xandra, with me. Jetina, go tell Cresiel and Kaja we will be back."
He turns to Xandra, "Do we need to go all the way up, you think?"
"I do not know, but I suggest we petition Lord Erathaol directly. If he cannot solve it, he will know how it can be solved," Xandra declares, "The works of the Serpent's Throne are deadly and formidable."
Moore nods and takes a breath and prays!
'Lord Erathaol. We have been sent a threat disguised as a letter from Brightwater. It is from the Serpents Throne. It is contained, but we require your guidance on how to rid ourselves of it.'
Gimme a d100. Not much luck is involved, but one aspect is.
[blockquote]Rolled 1d100 : 8, total 8[/blockquote]
Thats not a 7 or 77! Or a 100!
"Be not afraid," Erathaol intones as he is besides you, kneeling before the stone covering. "You were right to ask for my aid, and know that your soul was safe because you were before the Holy Mountain. Were you not within the reach of the light of Chronias when you read this, all may have been lost."
Xandra steps back and kneels, "Thank you, Lord Erathaol."
Moore frowns. "Then it sounds as if we need to bring this individual here from Brightwater. I'll not risk anyone falling into a trap."
"Yes. But move with wisdom, for an impersonator or a lie could well reside within this," Erathoal says, "Go. I shall deal with the letter."
"Thank you as always for your wisdom." Moore says.
im going to have to log dive to find the name of the solar we worked with in Brightwater.
Sure, let me know when you have it and are ready.
Sunstone.
Moore will use Limited Wish for a stronger version of Sending to include more words and to make it instant.
'Sunstone, this is Duke Moore of Celestia, formerly of Aurora. I request you or another law enforcement official to come to my base in Lunia as soon as possible. Someone from Brightwater has apparently sent me an assasination attempt disguised as a letter, containing the power of the Serpent's Throne.'
'A serious accusation. Please bring any evidence you have to support it.' Sunstone replies, 'This is not a trivial matter.'
"Lord Erathaol, you may be asked for some testimony regarding this situation. I do not wish to risk anyone's lives by withdrawing... whatever that is from the light of Celestia." Moore says.
A turn to Xandra and a deep breath.
"Xandra, you, I and Grias are going to Brightwater." Moore adds. "I imagine this is duplicity and misdirection, but hopefully we can find a shred of truth in all of this."
In your hands a letter appears, neatly folded and with a swirling seal of gold wax. "That will suffice," Erathaol says, the stone melting away against his hand, like snow in the summer sunshine.
"It likely is," Xandra agrees, "Unless Sanez is someone the devils wish to harm or discredit directly."
Moore nods. "Thank you, Lord Erathaol."
Let's also grab Cresiel if he's done. Otherwise it'll be the three of them. Greater Plane Shift to... uh, well, I'm sure there's a central place for this sort of thing there, so, wherever that is.
One question. You asked him to come you and now you're going to Brightwater?
Well it sounded like they wanted us to go there. If they're coming then we will wait.
Soon enough Sunstone arrives. He travels with a squad of astral devas, all clad in gold armor and with maces ready. He strides forward and nods to you, "Duke Moore," he greets you from your gate, "A Duke of Celestia accusing agents of the Serpent Throne to assassinate you through Brightwater is not a trivial matter."
"Sunstone, it is good to see you again. Please, come in." Moore gestures, taking them to one of the sitting areas inside of his fortress.
"I absolutely believe this is some sort of attempt of the Serpent Throne to either sow discord or simply throw illusions." Moore explains. He offers over the letter from Erathaol afterwards. "That should provide for evidence, but... Grias, why don't you explain what happened, since you're the one who has first-hand knowledge?" He asks. "Let us start there and then move forward."
"Oh well. Sanez came bearing this letter and dropped it off. He was quite polite - on the tall side, human but with inhuman ancestry. I noticed his eyes glow faintly and he has an extra finger on his left hand."
Cresiel looks up at that, "A sixth finger?" His expression creased into a deep frown.
"Oh yes, a sixth finger," Grias bobs up and down int he air, "About the size of his pinkie and positioned after it."
"The demon lord Graz'zt is known to have six fingers and sometimes it is inherited," Cresiel says, "An ominous omen."
"Even if he does have it," Sunstone cuts in here, "It is a disfigurement not exclusive to Graz'zt. I have seen mortals without a drop of supernatural ancestry born with a sixth finger." He takesthe letter in the meantime but doesn't read it yet, "Continue, Grias."
"G-g-g-g-graz'zt?" Grias goes pale and dimmer, sinking down towards the ground.
"Grias, can you think of anything else?" Moore asks.
"He had r-red hair," Grias droops even closer to the ground, "He talked well, like he was educated."
A slight gesture from Sunstone, a hand held up to stop Grias. "Thank you. Before I read this letter, is there anything else?"
"I don't think so." Moore says. "Please understand, we do not wish to cast false accusations. Are you familiar with this Sanez individual, Sunstone?"
"Not personally," Sunstone says, "But an accusation from a Duke of Celestia and backed by a letter from one of the Hebdomad is not lightly put aside."
"For diplomacy if no other reason," Cresiel says, voice quieter.
"You're right, and because Celestia returns the favor when the shoe is on the other foot," Sunstone agrees. The seal of the letter is undone, motes of radiance as it dissolves on the touch of his finger. The letter is taken out and silently read. No comments once he finishes, the letter breaking apart into motes of radiance as well. "We will investigate this and locate Sanez if he is in Brightwater."
"If he is innocent, please let us know." Moore says. "I would like to meet the person that they tried to impersonate, if that is the case."
A nod to that, "Is there anything else to add to this? If he is serving the Serpent Throne, he can lament his foolishness in prison for all time. Anything that can lead to that is helpful."
Moore shakes his head. "No, only that he apparently delivered it in person to Grias here. Though, perhaps that, in itself, is significant. I would think a spawn of a demon lord would have difficulty coming through here unnoticed, even if he was in disguise. Hm... Grias, where did you meet him? Perhaps I can see if I can notice anything significant to add to this testimony."
"Right around here," Grias says, "He didn't come in."
"Interesting." Moore says. He stands up and walks over before he looks to the past -- let's see if there's anything there at all!
I'm going to assume there's some sort of mind blanking going on, but he's going to try Hindsight anyway. If... that even works here...
It does. You don't see him - almost certainly a sign of mind blank or similar, powerful magics.
Moore nods.
"He was protected by something along the lines of mind blank." Moore reports to the others. "Whether that tells us anything extra, I cannot say -- if Sanez is not the type to usually command strong magic, then it may indicate more deception."
Sanez, not Sarez.
"Or simply prudent defensive magic if you're that powerful," Cresiel remarks, glancing over at Sunstone.
Sunstone catches that look, "You're right, it's hardly proof," he agrees. "Circumstantial at best."
Whoops, I'll fix it.
"I agree." Moore says. "I'll leave the matter to Brightwater to investigate, but if there's anything you require from us, we'll be happy to help in any way we can."
"You'll hear back within a day," Sunstone agrees, turning to go.
Anything else to add here?
"Thank you." Moore says.
Nope, not at present.
Doing anything while waiting for word from him?
Let's go through a few of the efreet books. Moore's still got magic book-reading powers, so he should be able to go through a good mass of them.
Cool. Refresh me on what you're looking for with them?
Hmm... lore regarding lost locations, or supposed places that might have fabled arms and armor. Maybe potent/lost magic, as well.
Was it just a regular library? I mean, that's something else he'd look at too -- if a lot of the books are just informational or what.
He'll also pay attention to any books written recently to see if there's new information in any of them that was not known previously. Perhaps related to slavery and connections the college may have had to those holdings.
A lot of it is lore you've seen before or in different forms, but hardly all. Some of the books are efreet exclusive, oddities of the fey world or more esoteric yet.
By chance, the first book on lost magic is Medicant. The story's about right in broad strokes and it doesn't tell you anything you don't know. It does mention a ghostly guardian but calls her Elleny instead of Elena.
As you chuckle over that, a message. 'Sanez left Brightwater several days ago. He serves as a general problem solver, adventurer and messenger. He has not returned since then and scrying is blocked.'
'Thank you for the information.' Moore sends back. Presuming this is the type that you can reply to.
If they need to take action, they can, but for now he's going to remain neutral -- well, as neutral as one who's the target of an assassination can be, anyway -- for now.
A breath before he goes back to the books -- he'll have to save that book to give to Elena when he goes back to visit.
The next book of note is about Argan, a berserker who is said to have overthrown a mad golden dragon who conquered an entire kingdom. Of main note is his axe, known as Arganblood. It's said it is the doom of dragons and was lost countless ages ago. Most believe it lies in a dead and forgotten Prime Material world, but details are scanty.
'Agents have been dispatched to find him.' Sunstone sends back to you.
Moore makes a note as he continues along.
'Please let me know if you would like any assistance.' Moore sends.
The third - hello. It's about a wandering fey blooded mage named Syllen. A wanderer by nature, he had enough fey blood to barely age at all. He became a legend in his world, a figure of mischief and mayhem beyond good and evil. He cared nothing for them, only his amusements. It's said that by the time he finally died, his spell library and personal equipment were immensely large and powerful.
He's noted to have authored several spells lost to the ages, including ones such as Syllen's Switch, Syllen's Soul Sight, Syllen's Significant Stunner and Syllen's Swift Shot.
Unfortunately, his world has long since passed, and it's said his possessions have spread to the four winds.
Moore takes some more notes! Perhaps there's more on Syllen in Xiranthador. Perhaps some divinations on the other pieces of equipment.
He continues!
The fourth is about something called the Blade of Endings. A strange, apocalyptic thing said to be a hole in Creation. Little is known about it, said to be held by an undead ruler of some kind. It is linked to destruction, madness and worse.
Moore puts that on the 'don't go after this' list and continues on!
The next is a reference to a lost spell named 'Anatym's Cataclysm'. What it does isn't clear, but it's reputed to be powerful and ancient.
As you read that and consider a few moments, pausing your work, 'No evidence of anything unusual after searching Sanez's home and possessions. If he is guilty of this, he was unknowingly used or covered his tracks well.'
My, they really are efficient, aren't they?
'It would be brazen of them to simply try and masquerade as him. Thank you for keeping me informed.' Moore sends back.
Moore makes some more notes! Ah, this sort of thing is refreshing.
You find another as you go through more and more books.
Temman's Wheel, said to be able to travel all the planes. Lost in a dimensional rift, it's reported to be powerful and unlimited. It allows pinpoint precise travel and according to legend, can ignore wards against teleportation and plane shifting.
Moore stops there, his finger resting on a piece of information about it.
"Really...?" He murmurs to himself.
He takes some quick notes and puts a circle around that one. That is definitely their highest priority right now!
For now, he'll continue through the books, since he wouldn't be leaving to do much today anyway.
Actually, give me an K:A check real quick.
Take 10 for 105
You're near the end when you note it - a book of lore. Obscure, obscene lore. Yet parts of it remind you of part of your research into Calley's notes.
!
Could this be another piece...?
He stops for the moment to go back to Calley's notes to compare.
Refresh me on your progress there?
We were at... 101? I think. Hold on.
Sure, let me know. I thought you were notekeeping that is all.
This information is worth 111 pieces, so that's 112/777 so far.
Ahah! It's a part. A small part, but you feel as if you've made progress.
That's worth 6 pieces for a total of 118/777. Make sure to keep a note of this on your sheet.
Yeah I probably should've done that the first time...
Moore nods and takes some notes to send to Seira for later, then goes back to the books!
That's the last of the noteworthy and useful things.
As you sit up an d stretch from the effort, 'The trail for Sanez is showing all signs of being dead. He vanishes in Earth with no sign of any further movement.'
'So at this point, do you believe that Sanez is the responsible party and this was not simply a ruse to place blame on him?' Moore sends back.
But, if it's in Earth... he may be able to work with that.
'I don't know,' Sunstone replies back, 'My gut says yes, but I wouldn't put it past the devils to abduct him like this.'
'I understand. I'm going to reach out to some contacts and see what I can do. If I find anything conclusive, I will report to you on it.' Moore sends. 'Thank you again for taking this on, if you or Brightwater ever has need of my services, by all means, do not hesitate.'
'Be safe and good fortune to you.'
Next move?
Let's go summon The Team and see if Cresiel got anything else out of Majanal.
Kaja is already there, head down and resting. Jetina is next to him, gently rubbing his shoulder as the dragon-man rests.
Cresiel walks at your side as Xandra follows, the latter clearing her throat, "Are you well, Kaja?"
"I ate too much gold," Kaja groans, "My stomach feels so heavy. So, so, so heavy."
"I'll never truly understand dragons." Moore says.
He clears his throat. "So, just to make sure we're all on the same page, someone from Brightwater named Sanez brought a letter to us addressed to me. It was apparently a plot from the Serpent Throne at an assassination."
A pause to let that settle in. "Brightwater authorities have investigated and can't say whether Sanez was actually the guilty party or if this is someone using his likeness to try and disguise facts. His trail disappears somewhere in Earth. I wanted to get opinions on whether or not we try and find him -- I can send Melia onto his trail while we investigate other things, but... well, the directness of the entire thing struck me as brazen enough that we may have just cause to go ourselves."
A small shrug and a smile. "But this isn't my decision to make unilaterally, so I'd like to hear what everyone thinks. If we do go, I would go to Mineral and ask Lord Crystalle if he can offer us aid in locating this person. If we can save the real Sanez, I would like to do so... if he is guilty, then... well, we can also bring him here for punishment." Moore says quietly.
"I'm against it," Jetina says, "I don't like it at all, but I heard about so many devil plots while on Aurora. We could be walking into another ambush."
"We could," Cresiel says, "We cannot discount it, but we can move to crush it. We are not weeping babes, unable to defend ourselves." Hefting his hammer up and dropping it on the table with a loud THUMP, "We will stand and we will triumph."
Kaja looks up, "Give me a little while and I'm for it."
"It does seem like obvious bait." Moore says. "Or overconfidence. We can't discount that he's been captured and is being used. Of course, if that's the case he may be dead already. Okay. My plan will be to send Melia to investigate. She may have more contacts than I do at my disposal." Moore says.
He does withdraw a piece of paper with some notes on it. "Ah, just for the record, none of you are to leave here to go anywhere without an escort from now on. I know that may be obvious, but considering the brazenness of others thus far, I do not even trust going anywhere in Celestia alone right now." A small smile follows his serious warning as he continues.
"I know we all travel together usually anyway, so it's a bit of a moot point. Speaking of, I am going to try and find more information on something I came across in those books -- It's something called Temman's Wheel. It apparently allows for unrestricted dimensional travel, overcoming even things that block it."
Amid murmurs of agreement, "Temman's Wheel?" Jetina asks, "I've never heard of it. Though that doesn't say all that much."
Cresiel bows his head a moment, picking up his hammer. "As you command," he says. After a breath, "Moore, do you believe us in danger even here?"
There's a moment of hesitation where it looks like he's about to say no.
"I'm afraid so. It was not so long ago that Romiel was attacked in the middle of his own fortress, after all." Moore says. "I don't know what the ultimate solution for that is, though. I do not wish for us to simply ask to have this base moved to Jovar out of fear."
Cresiel closes his eyes for several seconds, perhaps seven. He exhales after and then says, "Then we need more powerful warriors here. I believe mother qualifies, and if I personally invite her, she will stay indefinitely."
"I don't disagree with you about your mother, but I think her talents may be wasted simply staying here to keep an eye on the place while we gallivant around." Moore says with a sincere smile. "I won't stop you from asking her, but I think I can simply petition Lord Erathaol for that sort of aid, as well as perhaps improvements to be made to this fortress to better protect us. I can borrow some of Aurora's ideas." He adds with a sly smile.
"Do so," Cresiel says, "We can send her away later if she is not required."
Kaja looks up, smiling, "Lady Villisa is returning? Finally!"
Jetina clears her throat, "Alright, healer's instructions are here: Bed rest, starting now." Rising, Jetina takes Kaja by the shoulder, "Now."
Moore covers his mouth to hide a grin. "Xandra, would you accompany me to Xiranthador please? I'd rather be polite and ask in person than through an indirect means like prayer."
"I feel better now," Kaja insists as Jetina drags him along, "Hope is a powerful medicine!"
Xandra watches them go before she adds, "Gladly." One word says it all as Cresiel steps out, "It seems events here will be getting more and more interesting."
Moore chuckles as he starts to fly up!
Which is weird, because it's in a lake in Venya, but still...
Obviously, intent is to fly up to Venya then... down?? into Xiranthador!
d100 real quick, +7 modifier.
[12:04] <Nephrite> roll 1d100+7
[12:04] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d100+7 --> [ 1d100=93 ]{100}
just... lol
You fly up.
You fly up.
Your gaze is fixed to the light above.
My opponent is ever ready and every prideful, yet twisted as a knot.
The letter was not a message for you alone, Moore. He knew well he would not claim your soul while you reside here.
Moore slows down as he continues along. He glances over at Xandra, then back up.
"Why, then...?" He murmurs to himself.
Ah... it was to send a message, proverbially and literally, to... hmph.
He takes in a deep breath as resolve settles in and he resumes flying along.
"Ah. Another reminder that diplomacy takes many forms," Xandra says when you glance at her.
Moore lets out a quiet bark at that.
"Yes, how better to say 'we want to kill you' than to send something like that?" He asks. "Or better yet, to show someone your intentions and your plans."
He shakes his head.
"They will see the truth, in time."
From there, your trip to Venya and Xiranthador is unremarkable enough.
Goal here?
Three parts:
1) Find Erathaol (he will probably find us doing parts 2 and 3, this is fine) and ask him what his suggestions are on defense for the fortress.
2) Research Syllen and see if there are any leads on his magic and equipment here.
3) Research Temman's Wheel.
4) Oops, I forgot about this one. Let's also donate all the books we got from efreet to Xiranthador, excepting the book on Medicant that Moore will keep to share with Ellenny.
Okay, gimme a d100.
[13:05] <Nephrite> roll 1d100
[13:05] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d100 --> [ 1d100=70 ]{70}
No +7 bonus to make it 77 but I'm ok with it.
Donations take a little bit of time - you have to find the right person. The right person is a tall, slender throne archon. Less muscular than most of his kin, he is also taller and wears a simple hose and tunic. Nothing fancy nor interesting, humble clothes save for a gold brooch affixed to his tunic's chest. It is of a book, well detailed and clearly a master's work.
"Duke Moore," The archon bows, "I am Lorekeeper Xale. Your donation is an honor."
"Lorekeeper, it's a pleasure to make your acquaintance." Moore says and offers a bow. "I originally thought that there was really no way this place would have need of books like that." Moore admits. "But then I realized that while the knowledge of whatever is in the books may already exist here, the perspective of the writer wasn't." A smile after that.
"I don't generally go around ransacking libraries, so please forgive the rather ugly manner in which all of these were obtained." He adds. "I hope they can help to provide to someone curious about efreet culture, if nothing else. Oh... yes, there is something in one of them I should warn you about -- something about a 'Blade of Endings.' It seems rather dangerous, but I can imagine you're not really in the business of hiding knowledge from those seeking it -- I just wanted to make sure you were aware."
"I have heard of that," Xale says, "I also heard reports Aurora was involved in it," he says, "Though I have not ascertained the truth yet."
Before you ask, it was before Moore's time.
"Really? Huh. Oh..." Moore taps his chin. "Now that you mention it, I think I heard something about that offhand once." A shake of his head. "Either way, If I happen across any more noteworthy collections, I'll bring them here. ...Oh!" He blinks, as if he just remembered something, and withdraws a flute from his bags.
"You wouldn't, by any chance, know where this ought to be returned to specifically, would you? I know it's from somewhere in Merucia, obviously, but... I don't know much more about it." He says. "I bought it from a friend of mine, but I'd like to return it to where it should rightfully be."
To be clear, he's talking about this:
Mercurian Flute
This flute grants a +10 competence bonus on Perform checks used by playing the flute. When the flute is used for Perform checks, the user can use the Song of Cleansing Light feat.
Song of Cleansing Light [Bardic, Exalted]
Prerequisite: Bardic music, turn undead.
Benefit: As a standard action, you may expend one use of your bardic music ability and one use of your turn undead ability to grant your allies within 60ft bonus damage against undead. They deal an extra 2d6 points of damage on weapon damage rolls, including natural weapons. This damage rises by 1d6 to 3d6 when you reach level 10, as well as by 1d6 to 4d6 when you reach level 20. This effect lasts for as long as you play and for 5 rounds thereafter.
"Of course, Duke," Xale says after studying the flute, "Those are made by Mythan Eversight, Authority of Life. If I may ask, where did you come on it? They are given to those rare souls who have the spirit of a bard but follow our path."
Xale takes 10 on K:L.
"It was in the hands of a follower of Malar." Moore explains. "My friend and his partner were sent by Selune to deal with him and this was apparently in his belongings."
A smile after that. "I could certainly make use of it myself, but it feels more correct to have it returned to be given out to someone, rather than just found. Do you mind if I ask where Mythan usually resides? I can go take a visit after our business here is concluded." Moore says as he puts it back in his bag for safekeeping.
"I believe he resides on Mercuria, at Librasil's Point." Xale says, "Is there anything else I can help you with?"
"There is not. Thank you for your time, Lorekeeper." Moore says.
He nods to go do some reading for himself!
You and Xandra have a seat, getting books to read. You begin to read, nothing right away. You take a moment to stretch and take a cup of juice set out be - wait a second, you didn't bring juice.
Opposite you is Erathaol, silently and leisurely reading a tome of his own. Refreshments are between all of you, "I am pleased to see you are well," Erathaol says. "Especially after provoking the efreet and with Hell's ongoing hatred."
"One of these days I'll figure out how you do that." Moore says with a smile. "But that might ruin the magic."
He sips his juice and sets it in his lap. "We have managed with your assistance." Moore says. "I'm going to further investigate the matter with Sanez as well, but... I wanted to ask for your direction on this."
He takes a breath as he closes his eyes. "Romiel was attacked, as I'm sure you know. In his own fortress." He opens his eyes. "I would be heartbroken if something like that happened to Grias, or anyone else under my care. Now that I've been... mm... personally involved in this matter, I cannot sit idly and allow the possibility of something happening while I'm away -- or even when we're back and resting." Moore pauses there a moment.
Another breath as he sips his juice again. "I don't know what the correct solution is. I fear that if we simply send more forces to my fortress, that it may take them away from somewhere else. At the same time, I do not wish for us to simply relocate the base to somewhere 'safe,' out of fear. Surely this is not the first time a situation like this has come up, so I would love to hear your opinion and direction." After that, he shifts his posture slightly and sits at attention.
"I worry as well, but I trust in your wisdom, Seer," Xandra declares, bowing her head forward deeply.
"Follow me," Erathaol stands, book flying to the table and closing, a bookmark in place. He stands and begins to walk off. As you follow, you find in instants you are elsehwere, atop a hill rising above other hills in Venya. It is cold here, a brook nearby babbling. Above is the light of Chronias, shining down. "It is said I am wise. It is said I am a master of lore," Erathaol begins, looking upward. "Yet not even I know the answer to all questions." He kneels and looks up, "Let us pray. Oh Master of the Illuminated Heaven, I ask for your wisdom. Reveal to us your will in this matter and reveal us the path we are to walk. Reveal us the path to defy the schemes of the King of Hell and overcome his wickedness."
Xandra kneels as well, bowing her head in prayer.
Moore follows suit with Xandra!

Well, okay.
You pray and in that you see it in your mind's eye.
Home.
You see your home, surrounded by light, surrounded and protected. A glow that envelopes it completely, wrapping around it and shielding it.
The King of Hell wishes to make a statement. This is my response. Your work is too important for our quarrels, Moore. Continue to solve Calley's notes.
There's a small gasp that escapes his lips.
"Thank you." Moore says, quietly.
The light of Chronias shines intensely bright as Erathaol merely finishes, "Amen. Thank you, master." He rises after, "I have said your work is important before, Moore. Let it be said again, for we stand in the presence of a miracle."
He takes in a deep, somewhat shaky breath.
"I say I understand, but... well, there are some things I can only feel and not truly comprehend." Moore says with a small smile. "Thank you."
He looks up and nods again. "Thank you, as well."
He clears his throat. "To say I'm humbled would be an understatement, Lord Erathaol."
"We are all humbled," Erathaoal declares, "Go. You have much to do and I have much to contemplate."
In an instant you are back where you were, sitting with your book in hand.
Xandra takes a shaking breath, a hand to her chest. "Oh...oh Moore!"
Moore turns to her.
"I didn't expect that, at all." Moore says with a smile. "Did it have any words of wisdom for you, personally?"
"No, but I heard what I needed to," Xandra says, "I believe much more reading is in our future."
"I had no doubt." Moore says. "It was either this or divinations."
"Indeed." A moment and then she turns down to our book, "Home is safe. Let us read and research knowing that."
Moore nods with a smile and goes back to reading!
Which one are you going for first?
Hmmm. Let's go after the Wheel first.
Go ahead and tell me how long you're willing to invest looking for information on it. After that, make a second post with an K:A roll.
He'll go until he finds some solid leads.
Take 10 for 105 with 15 GI points.
You spend some time in the library, several hours passing. You don't come any closer to finding anything offhand, just a single offhanded mention. From the context and the age of the text, the phrase millions of years old is conservative.
"I wonder if divinations are the way to go after all." Moore says with a chuckle.
Xandra looks up, "It is an investment of time," she concurs.
'Moore,' Cresiel sends, 'I have received an update on the efforts against the efreet. It is available when you return.'
'I will return shortly.' Moore sends back.
Since he's already in a good place, he may as well try it!
He is casting Divination, per the spell. I'll deduct the 25 gold as needed.
The question is 'How can we find Temman's Wheel?'
His chance for this to be successful is 90%.
Post the expense in loot.
"In places four, yet the soul of it is no more."
Done.
Moore murmurs the reply. "In places four, yet the soul of it is no more." He murmurs it again to himself, as if tasting the answer. "...The elements, maybe...?"
"Cryptic," Xandra remarks slowly, "A mystery disguised by a riddle. Maybe the elements, maybe other things. Perhaps more magic is in order."
Moore clicks his tongue. "Are we allowed to do that? Well, I suppose it's worth a try."
Another Divination, this time:
'How can we find the answer to 'in places four, yet the soul of it is no more'?
"Understand that the soul of it is no more, thus leading you to places four."
"Oh that's just being cheeky." Moore says. He huffs once.
"Ahem. 'Understand that the soul of it is no more, thus leading you to places four.' I feel like I got conned out of an answer!" Moore says as he throws his hands up.
Xandra's hand goes to her mouth, expression unseen. "Not quite," she says. "Because the soul of it is no more, that means it must direct us to the four places it is. Still, it is helpful if not illuminating."
"I think you were right about there being some books in our future. I'm going to go on the chance that it has something to do with the four elemental planes... maybe something somehow dies and has to proceed there?" He drums his fingers on a nearby table.
"Let me spend some time looking since we're here." Moore says.
His intent will be to look through books (remembering he has BA) on elementals, the elemental planes and that sort of thing to see if he can find anything on souls departing and leading to the four planes, or... something like that.
Let's say two hours or so.
Give me K:P or K:R, whichever is higher.
K:R is by virtue of Marshal!
Take 10 for 108.
Well, some souls do go to the elemental planes. There's two instances. Elementals (and outsiders based on an elemental plane) return to it when slain on another plane. Elementals fade away and merge with the plane while outsiders reform.
Secondly, a mortal who serves a deity or power who has their divine realm in an elemental plane would go there.
So is it possible for a soul to lead to all four planes, or does it seem that they all just go to one of them?
Any of the four. A soul that served, say, Kossuth would go to fire. A soul who served Chan would go to Air and so on and so forth.
Okay. Is there any place where all four planes touch each other?
Your planar knowledge tells you no. Water and Fire never touch, nor do Earth and Air.
"Hmm... It's possible it's the elemental planes, but I suppose it's equally as possible it's something totally different." Moore admits. "A soul does return to the elemental planes, but...even that being the case, that doesn't tell us very much. Besides... there's no place that all four of the elemental planes touch, so... the clue being 'places four,' I don't think applies. What do you think?"
"I think we need more information," Xandra says, "I feel like a cat chasing its tail." With a wry smile, "We have farther to go."
"Hm." Moore nods. "Maybe instead of a divination, we should just see what the Holy Mountain has to say on the matter. Whenever I'm seeking knowledge or wisdom, a trip around usually shows me the path. I'll save the investigation of Syllen for another time."
A smile and a look out a nearby window. "We'll go take a walk, I'll return this flute to the Authority of Life, then we can go see what Cresiel has to say."
So the intent is pretty much just... go out and wander for a bit. It's never let me down before!
Out in Venya, to be clear?
Unless something leads us up or down, yes.
Gimme the dread d100.

[13:32] <Rei-chan> Nephrite rolled : 1d100 --> [ 1d100=78 ]{78}
One of these days, Alice.
Scary!
You wander perhaps an hour, pleasant but little of note happens.
Moore decides to keep wandering! No harm in that, and he's got nothing extremely pressing to do. If nothing turns up, nothing turns up.
"Moore." It's Xandra that speaks up, "While I am all in favor of trusting Celestia and seeking enlightenment, events move even as we wander. We have spent some time and surely events with the slavers progress."
"Mm." Moore stops and considers for a moment. "There's always time tomorrow. All right, one quick stop as we go back down, then."
He'll head to Librasil's Point. He's never been there, but he'll take 10 on K:L for 72 to know how to get there.
Librasil's Point is a tall cliff in the side of the mountain. It gives a tremendous view of below, of the layer below and the endless ocean surrounding Mount Celestia. Atop this cliff sits a fortress, gate opened wide. Wildflowers grow all around and within the castle, the courtyard full of a riot of color. Hound archons tend to the flowers, spread out and seeing to them, creating neatly organized rows of them, sometimes transplanting flowers to other locations.
"Do you think he enjoys gardening, or just what they represent when it comes to life?" Moore asks as he flies along towards the entrance.
"Or maybe he likes them because they're pretty?" Xandra says, "It could be any and all of them." Leading the way in, she pauses near the entrance, "Excuse me," she calls, "Is the Authority of Life available?"
The hound archon, a beagle's head and a big, muscular body as he tends to some flowers, "I think so, mistress of the trumpet," he says respectfully, "You can ask for an audience within."
"I suppose we could just ask." Moore affirms. "Thank you!" Moore calls to the hound archon as he continues along.
Thus you head inside. Wildflowers everywhere, being tended expertly. Ahead is a fountain where a plaque rests, one you can read.
'Take a coin and make a wish, for life will always prosper'.
Moore fishes out a gold coin from his bag.
He contemplates for a moment before he tosses the coin into the fountain.
If it matters, his wish is 'I wish we can find the wisdom to find Temman's Wheel.'
I will deduct the 1 gold in loot.
Moore continues onwards!
You proceed onwards after your wish. One of the hound archons, this one with the head of a gray hunting dog, comes forth from his duties. "Duke Moore," His voice is strong and cultured, "It is an honor to receive you. The Authority of Life is attending to Lord Domiel, but his personal hand is here to answer any questions you have. Do you wish to see him?"
Moore offers a bow in return. "Thank you for seeing me on short notice. Yes, please, we have something we would like to return to the Authority."
"Come with me," He offers, rising. Within you find it to be...full of wildflowers, growing on the wood floor, on the stone walls, on tables, everywhere. The stone fortress itself grows flowers, and as you walk, "Life eternally blooms, does it not?" The hound archon asks. "The will to live can overcome anything."
Moore nods. "I agree. To live and find purpose, or to live with possibilities. All sorts of things are possible if you continue to live." He says. He considers for a moment before he decides to muster the courage, "Does the Authority have a fondness for flowers in particular?"
"Yes," The hound archon answers, pausing in his walk. One arm is at rest, the other with a finger pointing out, like a baton used to illustrate points. "The Authority's true father was a noble with a house sigil of flowers. He's always been fond of them. In strength they grow and continue, each generation as colorful as the last."
Moore can't help but smile. "That makes a lot of sense. I'm sure the Authority must be fond of the House of Nature too, or perhaps Lady Eldath." A shake of his head. "I'll have to talk to him about it sometime."
From there you are lead along, to an office as full of flowers as paper. Here a trumpet archon sits, tall and thin, deeply so. His eyes are a sharp sea blue, on you the moment you enter the room.
"Duke Moore, Lady Xandra," He says right away, rising. "I am Delwan." He bows to you. "The Authority of Life is not here, but I can aid you in almost any matter he could."
"Sir Delwan." Moore says with a bow as well. He moves forward and withdraws the Mercurial Flute and places it gently on his desk.
"I purchased this from a friend of mine who recovered it from a follower of Malar. I do not know how it came to be in that person's possession, but I wanted to return it to the proper parties. I am aware I could, in theory, use it, but even in doing so, that didn't feel right to me." Moore says, with a small smile.
"Please, just consider it a gift from a newcomer." Moore adds. "In an effort to be neighborly."
"Ah!" With a joyous expression Delwar takes the flute up, holds it up to the light from a window. "Rarely these come back to us, either from use or being lost when a crusading hero falls. You are welcome to it if you want it, these are meant to be in the hands of heroes like yourself." His voice is low, reverential. "Far too often those that are lost are destroyed by the forces of evil, who fear the music that cleanses undeath."
Moore waves a hand offhandedly.
"I certainly appreciate the offer, but it cannot be easy to produce those sorts of things. I have more than enough boons as it stands now, so it would make me glad to see it back in the hands of someone else who can utilize it." A smile and a nod afterwards.
"Now that I have a bit more authority ...ah, ahem." Moore clears his throat. "Myself, I like to visit places that wouldn't normally be possible for those who would find something like this."
The flute is taken to the desk there, placed down where the light graces the desk.
"Thank you for returning this to us," Delwar says, "Ah, are you seeking any place in particular, Duke?"
Moore shakes his head. "Nowhere in particular right now. We are on the hunt for a time-lost item, but that isn't your concern." he says with a smile. "Please, just let the Authority know he, and anyone here, of course, are always welcome at my own fortress. I... really need to come up with a good name for it, I think." A small and merry laugh after that. "I should've thought about that a while ago. Oh well."
"You haven't named your fortress?" Delwar muses, "Yes, best to do that before someone names it for you. You may not like the name selected."
"Hahaha!" Moore laughs again. "You're absolutely correct. I even know the perfect one. You can let the Authority know he's always welcome in Brighthope. ...I really hope that one isn't taken already."
Taking 10 on K:P
With a light laugh, "Several times. A former fortress here had the name. It was in Mertion but has since been abandoned. I believe a few Lathanderite fortresses have the name or close variations, and there's also an eladrin named that, if I recall. There's probably more I don't know."
"Oh, yes, I suppose that one is pretty mundane as names go, isn't it?" Moore says.
A deep breath.
He'll take 10 on K:P himself for 90 to avoid making that blunder again.
How about 'Songhope'?
It's taken by an adventuring group based in Arborea. They've been inactive about a quarter of a century, but as it's based of various immortals, they could resume.
Fuck Arborea!!!
'Hope's Landing'? It's probably taken by something somewhere but worth a shot.
'Hope's Crossing' also.
Surprisingly, Hope's Landing is not. It was a city in Arcadia ages ago, but it was absorbed and ultimately renamed by a sister city.
Hope's Crossing is taken in the Beastlands, it's one of the rare outposts there.
Moore snaps his fingers.
"Hope's Landing. Perfect." He nods. "Please feel free to come and visit at any time. The Authority and anyone affiliated is always welcome."
"I will inform him, Duke," Delwar says.
"Thank you." Moore says. "Please excuse us, then."
Time to head home! ...And also let everyone know the fortress has a new name.
When you return back, you see a faint golden glow remains around your fortress. Like a bit of sunshine haze, beautiful and lingering in the air.
Moore smiles to himself, then at Xandra as he proceeds onward.
"It must've been quite a spectacle for the people who were here." Moore says as he flies back inside.
Within is Grias and Cresiel, as well as seven angels. Trumpet archons one and all, cast as if from silver and mithral. As one they speak, "We are Maliel and we shall protect your fortress, Duke Moore."
Cresiel nods slightly to you, "Welcome home," he calls, while Grias just shakes and bobs in the air, murmuring, "Oh my, oh dear..." over and over again.
Take 10 on K:P (or maybe K:L if that's appropriate?) for 105 (87 for K:L) for Maliel since, um, this seems important.
Moore raises a hand, casting a quick spell so all can hear him!
Carrying Voice for theatrics.
"Let it be henceforth known that from this day, this fortress is known as Hope's Landing! May all who dwell in it be forever protected by the light of Chronias and the wisdom of Mount Celestia!" Moore shouts.
He then clears his throat and dismisses his spell so he can talk normally.
"As you can imagine, we had a bit of an eventful time. What news of the efreet operations?" Moore asks.
Maliel is a celestial who normally resides deep in Solania. Little is known of them, save that they follow the Sevenfold Path, a doctrine established by Pistis Sophia.
Your words echo from horizon to horizon, loud and grand. Grias bobs even faster as Cresiel bows to you, "Hope's Landing," he says, then, "Let us go speak of it inside."
Moore offers a bow to the trumpet archons. "Thank you for your service."
He then nods to Cresiel. "Let us."
Once inside the meeting room, "Overall, our activities were a success," Cresiel declares, "While not all raids were victorious, by and large the forces of Celestia and the Cauldron achieved our tactical goals in the operation." Standing at a wind, looking out it towards the light, "Though the efreet launched reprisals even before our first assaults were done, so they clearly expected some manner of attack."
Moore nods. "I'm glad to hear that. They must've known something was going to happen, either through their spies or divinations. Have we been asked to participate in any further operations for the time being?"
"I suspect with previous actions, it may have merely been a contingency, but I know not the truth," Cresiel confesses, gaze out at the light. "At the moment, we are to stay at readiness. While the efreet have not directly assaulted Celestia, they have attacked several weaker and softer targets across the planes to varying levels of success."
Moore nods. "Very well. So no gallivanting, it seems. Ah, as you... probably noticed, your mother does not need to come and defend us. However, if you wish to invite her nonetheless, you are welcome to do so."
Cresiel closes his eyes and breathes out slowly. "I invited her already. She will be a little while to get here, as Sune gave her a task to accomplish."
"Well, Kaja will be happy, then." Moore says. "Ah... while we're in a state of readiness, would you do me a favor and think on something for me? I tried to get some assistance in finding that Wheel I mentioned, but I can't make heads or tails of what I was told."
A pause before he continues, "'In places four, yet the soul of it is no more.' I tried again for clarification and was told 'Understand that the soul of it is no more, thus leading you to places four.'"
He sighs after that. "I'm sure it's something simple, but I haven't had a lot of time to try and puzzle it out."

Cresiel is silent as you speak, "Four?" he murmurs, "In places four, yet the soul of it is no more. Understand that the soul of it is no more, thus leading you to places four. Was it an intelligent magical item, Moore? Did have a mind and soul?"
"I... hmm. I don't know." Moore admits. "It's entirely possible... ...Oh!" Moore stops suddenly. "Oh, you mean that... Oh! Maybe the item itself is in four parts?"
"It could be," Cresiel says, "Four parts in four different places." He shakes his head, "Riddles and lore are ever opaque until we can bring the light of truth of them."
"If that's the case, then... well, we almost have to ask 'where can we find one piece of it,' ... perhaps I'll try that." Moore says. "No wonder the divination didn't work... if the Wheel itself is in four parts." A shake of his head again. "All right, I'll take care of that along with other business we have. Do you need anything from me for now?"
Cresiel shakes his head, "No, all I need is time to reflect on today's glories, and give thanks for the important purpose I am a part of and to be a shield for it. Thank you, Moore."
It's then that you feel it, your connection with Cresiel blooming, growing stronger.
Node update for Cresiel. Go read.
Got it!
Moore takes a breath as he puts a hand on his chest. "There it is again..." He glances up and out a window himself. "I wasn't expecting to have such a... direct meeting. I'm still in awe a bit."
"...you met..." Cresiel turns, eyes wide. "What happened?"
"Xandra and I went to Lord Erathaol to ask him how to proceed with our defenses." Moore says. "He took us to... somewhere in Venya. We prayed."
There's a pause as he takes a breath.
"We were visited by..." He clears his throat. "I have my opinions on who it is, or... rather, I should say 'what,' but... I heard the voice -- the same voice Xandra and I hear all the time. It promised to protect us and... well." He pauses yet again. "It said, specifically: 'The King of Hell wishes to make a statement. This is my response. Your work is too important for our quarrels, Moore. Continue to solve Calley's notes.'"
He gestures around. "I'm guessing that's when you may have noticed the changes."
"There is no question who it is," Cresiel's voice is stern. "There is only one who acts with that authority in Celestia." Nonetheless he listens, "I have noticed. They were not subtle, as any message back would not be subtle."
"Just to be clear, you mean Zaphkiel, right? Or do you mean something else?" Moore asks. "Either way, I'm glad to have the support, it means I have less to worry about."
"Zaphkiel," Cresiel agrees, "Who else could it be?"
A pause, a long one. Just as you turn to go, Cresiel speaks again, his gaze upwards.
"My mother is blessed to be a right hand of Sune. She has seen things others will never understand. Beneath her facade is wisdom, never forget that. One such piece of wisdom she told me as a child. She said, 'Cresiel, be honored when someone like Sune talks to you, and be very, very, very afraid. Becoming wrapped in events around such beings is more dangerous than having a tarrasque fall in love with you.' We are chosen with a purpose, one I have no doubt will be as hazardous as any in Aurora, if not more."
Take 10 on K:P for 105 -- is one of Zaphkiel's actual titles 'Master of the Illuminated Heaven,'?
Moore merely nods. "It's... disconcerting in some ways to have such direct access to the gods themselves, Cresiel. I always feel a bit... out of place dealing with them. But when we exist as we do, doing the work that we do... it becomes commonplace. It's... not easy to get accustomed to." A shake of his head afterwards.
"I think we can all say there are certain things that we can never express in words to other people." A smile after that. "Nonetheless, we're safe here, and that's all that matters."
Yes. He has a lot of titles but that is one of them.
"We are important people living in important times," Cresiel concludes to that, "We must remember that as we go forward, so that we live up to that to the utmost."
Moore nods. "I agree completely. Our bonds getting stronger is evidence of that."
He takes a breath. "It looks like I've got some pieces of a wheel to try and find."
Next move then?
You know what, let's try four Divinations.
I will post the 100 gold in loot.
'Where can I find the first piece of Temman's Wheel?'
'Where can I find the second piece' and so on, to four pieces.
Assuming I don't just get told the same stupid shit when I try the first one! No offense whoever's responsible for Divinations, really!! But anyway, assuming the first one gives me something, I will proceed. If it doesn't, let me know.
And as a reminder it's a 90% success rate.
Actually, this thread is getting pretty long. I'm going to lock this one and make a new one. Please hold.
