Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: Halbarad on December 10, 2004, 04:55:02 PM
In a blatant ripoff of Dune's topic, post what you're working on that's NOT gaming related - it can be work, hobbies, whatever you care to elaborate on. It can be fun to keep up with what everyone else  is doing - and sometimes you can get input from other folks that'll make life a little easier.

Anyway, to start:

Priority One: Killing every individual on the planet with a Samsung cell phone.

After that, I'm looking to start several new PHP coding projects with SR, as well as continuing to refine and improve the DL. Also hoping to get a Linux box set up at home sometime this month for testing and experimentation.

Uh...

Not much today, beyond taking a long morning nap and puttering around on the computer. Work's coming up, and I might do Christmas shopping tomorrow. Whatta weekend planned, eh?

I am preparing the Ulti-Mock, which I will use to crush the wills and spirits of all who dare cross my path and Rat, who I have to specifically include because he is a loser not posting to his own bloody game enough!

Or I'm, uh, in a bit of a weird mood.

I have once again begun my foray into reviews for Soulriders. Games to type up include FFX-2, Metroid Prime, and Resident Evil 0. I'm not sure if I want to work up the nerve to try a hand at reviewing the Sonic and Megaman Anniversary Collections, though...

Edit: Oh yeah, been meaning to do something for Fatal Frame 2 and Clocktower 3 too.

I had recently put all else aside to play WoW and try and catch up with Rez.

But even if I took a week of vacation, I doubt I could catch up with him now.

Just finished the first week of my holiday job at GlaxoSmithKline. I worked there over the summer, and they agreed to have me back. Only problem is, they've had me in the process area all week, doing practical stuff. It's nasty, because of the filtered air, and the respiratory gear you occasionally have to wear. But hey, it's work.

I also have to revise everything I learnt (or didn't) this term at Uni, and get on with learning C++ if I want this job in the city next summer.

Today? Put of Christmas shopping to nap, game and eat too much pizza. I am quite happy.

Oh, I'm sorry.

Sucks harshly.

I called into work today - said it was a personal reason, but I just couldn't stomach doing my tasks today. It's reached the 'I'm going job hunting after the holidays' phase, along with 'Giving 2 weeks the SECOND I score a new job.' I'm just so sick of being in the role I am.

So I'm spending the day playing Shadow Hears 2 and RPing. Yay.

Quote from: "Brian"Woah.  Everything okay there, Dune?

Yeah, pretty much. Just time to get a new job. I've had that job for about two years now, and I need something different.

There is also a management shakeup as well as some bullshit being rained on us by the shift before that isn't helping. Nothing truly major, but enough to be a headache, wear on my patience and make me want to get a new job. So it goes.

I can sympathize. Getting hired on = yay, but they're doing some insanity with this account that I'm not real crazy about. So it's either transfer to a new account, or really start hitting the sites for web coding jobs - which probably means relocating.

Yeah. After the grief you've gone through, I'd consider a new account first. You lived through four months of that to get on, seems a waste to leave unless you get an in city tech job. Though, didn't you say your town was saturated with that stuff?

What's on my plate?  Stir fried chicken breasts with aniese, and a side of sweet peas.  A cup of commercial egg-nog for drink.

A lovely last meal before my final tomorrow, don't you think? ^_^
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: StormDragon on December 17, 2004, 07:30:41 PM
Finals are over. Now for the much needed two weeks of rest. I wonder what I'm getting for christmas. Now that I think back, the gifts that I really liked where the ones that I got from my brother (playstation 2, hardcover HP books.) But even though I'm not a little girl anymore, I can still remember the delight when my parents would buy me a cinderella castle, or that big pink lego mansion that my dad spent a whole day putting together.

I wonder what I'm getting this year. Since my parents don't really know what I like now, and demonstrated that fact by buying me a lamp last year instead of putting the money into a half price books gift card, I can only wait until christmas day to see. I know that I'm being a bit selfish, but I can't help it. I'm not the one for jewelry or flashy accesories. I'm more of a video game, nerdy, mp3 player geek.

Off to my room, where Imma finish cleaning up.
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: baka on December 17, 2004, 07:41:42 PM
Speaking of mp3 players and geeky stuff: My current project is coming up with enough money for this. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002IXB2E/qid=1103326747/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-3363467-9944601)

From the looks of recently sold things on ebay, I can sell my current mp3 player for quite a reasonable amount - I just have to work out where to get the rest of it. I have a fairly decent laptop I never use that I've wanted to sell for a while, but now there's word that my dad wants it. And I can hardly ask him to pay for it... Ah well. Maybe a personal video player isn't such a good idea.

Yesterday I started putting together the christmas presant to Cy and myself, from my parents. It's an entertainment center, y'know, for our TV and gaming systems and such. >_>  It'll make the living room look a lot more organized and give us more shelf space. It's also a BITCH to put together.  And the instructions are bastards.

After I get this finished (I'm almost done), I'm going to work on the webpage and try to avoid World of Warcraft until I get it coded.

Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: Ranma_007 on December 20, 2004, 07:36:43 PM
Let's see, stuff on my plate.

Well, I'm planning on doing some uber certification work in the upcoming months. Definitely on the plate are MS exams 70-272, 70-218, A+ Core Software, A+ Core hardware. I'm taking one every Tuesday for the next 4 weeks. If I pass all of those, I'll have like 7 computer certifications. Then mid January, I have to choose to either go for the Cisco CCNA certification, or to focus on obtaining the Windows XP MCSE. Just depends on order. Then who knows. Possibly the Server+ and Security+ certification. Maybe some SQL certifications, branch out and specialize, you know.

The thing that really really sucks with these exams is that I have to pass, or I lose 125 bucks. They only reemburse the ones that I pass.

Still working at American Express, it's nice, since I got a promotion recently and the yearly raise, which is pretty cool.

Still going to online classes at University of Phoenix. They're a pain, but on the positive side, I've learned to type a 1054 word college level paper in 41 minutes. Had to ice my fingers after that one.

Still doing client work and consulting, but it's tapered off so far.

I'm eventually planning on moving out, and need to do a detailed look at my finances for the upcoming year, balance what I make with my expenses, like college.

But other than those mondo heaps of stress, life goes well.

Got the day off today, so I don't have too much on my plate. I'm waiting for a delivery from Circuitcity.com - a Playstation 2 Composite hookup for my new TV, which should improve the image quality nicely and a new pair of headphones.  Also pondering gettiing SM Redux logs up as soon as I get the package and can get back to my room.

I cast Life 2 on this topic yet again.

---

Um, Super Bowl cleanup today, as well as recovery. Helluva party, even if I'm still half feeling it.  Past that, I'm playing Breath of Fire 2 on the GBA. It rocks, even with the bad translation. Enjoyment is upped by an increased money and EXP payout rate, so levelling up is speedier. It's still slow by modern standards, but it's not that bad at all.

Moreso if you've played the game and know how to break it wide open at midgame.

Well, I post now because I don't read stuff often.  I'm a very bad person, I know.

I got my ass promoted again.  They seem to like me for some reason, I dunno.  But that means too much work.  I took my only sick day ever this week and I'm still in OT.

... and somehow I'm supposed to find time to work on a contract I've had on the back burner for almost a year.  *sigh*.

Aah well.  I'm going out for a second date with an absolutely lovely (and drop-dead gorgeous) woman tonight, so at least some things are peaches. :)

Shopping around for a new bike, too.  It turns out the one I want qualifies as "classic" now, which means it's real hard to find.  There's *one* for sale in Ontario.  Unfortunately, it's entirely the wrong time of year to be riding a motorcycle home for 10 hours.

That's probably more than any of you actually wanted to read, and I've mentioned it all in chat, but it was kinda fun to write it all in here so nyah!

I'll quit boring you all now, though, and return you to your regular... something.  I'm pretty sure something on here is regular.

Right now, I finished my Six Sigma Green Belt training and test last weekend, and currently I'm working on the Security+ certification. Planning on getting that in 2.5 weeks.

The thing that really really sucks with these exams is that I have to pass, or I lose 125 bucks. They only reemburse the ones that I pass.

I've had a minor epiphany related to my course at university - it's been pissing me off because I don't like it very much, so I was thinking of changing to something drastically different next year.

I've realised I don't need to do that, I just need to focus on the bits I do enjoy and finish my degree with that, then do whatever the hell I want to. This amounts (at the moment, until I get disallusioned) with somehow forcing my way into the games industry. So I'm going to do my damn best to get a job with a company in London, Ideaworks3d, this summer, and keep doing programming and trying to pick up useful skills, even if my degree ends up being chemistry or something stupid.

Sorry for the minor idealistic rant there, but hey, it's your fault for reading all of what I wrote.

The game industry chews on idealism.

And chemistry has got to be the oddest major I've yet heard to try and break into that market.  =)

Good luck though.

This is the start of my spring break.

What's this spring break?

I know I fly home for a week, but 'break'?

I don't quite know what that means.

Anyhow, today I've been frothingly working from dawn.  Meeting in two hours.

There will be a playable today.  God dammit.

Anti-Xenosaga feelings?  Is that game that bad, or just dissapointing?  I hate the new artwork, but have heard nothing, and seen less concerning the game.

Anti-Xenosaga sentiment == wisdom. The first game was bad, and from what I've heard so far the second is even less stellar.
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: thepanda on March 07, 2005, 06:23:31 PM
I thought the first was ok, nothing stellar but I've played far worse.

The second is shaping up to be leaps and bounds better than the first, though. I've really enjoyed what I've played of it so far. Played being a key word here, as the story to play ratio is quite a bit more favorable to play this time around.

The new artwork is something to get used to, but it grows on you. I'm starting to prefer Shion's new design, honestly. The battle and skill systems are where the game has made it's most improvements. Fighting lacks the tedium of the last game. I'm actually having fun fighting 'random' encounters and the like.

Pff. If any of you had any sense, you'd forget this Xenosaga nonsense and be petitioning SquareEnix USA to translate Dragon Quest VIII.
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: Zenthor on March 07, 2005, 09:08:44 PM
Pfft.  After the travesty that was DQVII? DQ games have been steadily going downhill since 5 (where they peaked.  Either that or 4). I see no reason why 8 would be different.
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: thepanda on March 07, 2005, 09:56:48 PM
Pfft. When was the last time that worked? 1994?

Petitions no longer have the power they once held, and internet petitions never held any power, so their effectiveness has actually gone into the red.
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: Ragnar on March 07, 2005, 10:08:01 PM
Not having played Dragon Quest VII myself, I can't make any personal statement about that. However, any game that allows you to fight God is a winner in my book. It also contains quite a lot of witty wordplay.
I agree that the games probably peaked around IV (I haven't played any after that one), but all I've seen of DQVIII looks kick-ass awesome.
I'm futilely hoping that they'll one day bring over DQ: Slime Mori Mori Dan and the DQ IV remake.

I really should finish those games. I'm still halfway through II and III and on the 2nd chapter of IV ;_;

So was DQVII.. (EDIT:  I mean, DQVII was supposed to be a masterpiece on all accounts from before it was released here.)

Damn it, I'd rather they bring over the DQIV remake and the DQV remake.  Because those would sure to be good.
Title: What's on your plate?
Post by: Dracos on March 08, 2005, 09:40:17 AM
Fine.  I'll stab at that.  I liked Dragon Quest 7.  Not their best showing, sure, but I liked it a lot.  See, I have a different definition of travesty.  Prince of Persia: Warrior Without is a travesty.  DQ 7 may be extremely long and have a pacing level too slow for the average player at worst, but it's definitely not a travesty.   I also liked Dragon Quest VI with it's dreamworld mechanics and letting you force a demon to kill the last boss for you.  I recall, in fact, enjoying it better than DQ V, largely due to it's class system.

They can't bring over the DQIV remake, which you'd know if you followed the series.  The DQ V remake may or may not come over, depending on the sales of DQ VIII.

I want the series to take root here.  Not just toss a few fan games.  I want to be assured that if it has the DQ name on it that it will come over here.  So I'm not going to take a stance of denouncing DQ 8 before it even arrives and grumbling about remakes we don't get because even the real ones aren't selling.

Square Enix added it to it's official release list a couple of months ago silently.  Yoichi Wada has indicated an explicit desire to use it as a flagship to bring Dragon Quest back to the US, building momentum for future Dragon Quest products here.

But it's even further from my field... more managerial, less technical.  I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I have to decide by next week.

I'd return what's on the plate for something healthy like a salad if I could... but all kidding aside, you what in the heck happened to your roommate and how are you holding up, Brian?  O_o;

Not so great.  On Sunday his parents called me from Vegas.  they had to induce a coma medically because he was seizing ... well ... no.  He was having psychotic episodes from the pain, and was tearing out his I.V., his respirator, etc.  They tried to just restrain him, but he put up too much of a fight, apparently.  I'm not entirely clear on all the details....

Long-and-short is that I know he'd been experiencing a migraine all week before he left to visit his family, and was taking 6-8 times the normal reccomended dosages of things (stacking Alleve, Asprin, something I forgot, and a healthy amount of medical cannibus), but that could only reduce the pain to a point he could ignore for 4-6 hours out of the day.

He wasn't getting much sleep (I honestly didn't notice this part until afterwards; 2-4 hours of sleep is normal for me -_-)....  At some point, apparently the pain got to be so intense his family hauled him to the Vegas hospital, and they couldn't get him into an MRI (the respirator), and the CAT scan APPEARS to show a tumor.  They're not certain, so they're keeping him under until they can diagnose him.  Supposedly they got anothet CAT scan last night, but I haven't heard anything on that yet.

I managed to get ahold of his girlfriend, who lives in Australia, to tell her what happened....  But the same day his parents called to tell me what was going on, they told me they were probably going to be moving him to the East coast again, for his health.

To explain, my roomate was born without a pulmonary (sp?) artery, and was supposed to die before reaching adolescence.  He's 23 now, and is considered to be the healthiest person with his condition ever.  So moving him to a hospital to keep him under observation for a few months is pretty much a guarantee no matter what they discover.  His parents asked me if rent was paid.  Sterling had told me he paid it this month (it was his turn), and I'm broke....  I told them that it was fine and to worry about Sterling.

Twenty minutes later I get served an eviction notice. -_-

I'm honestly not holding up that well.  I'm trying to be optimistic here, but things look kind of grim.  I can deal with my own life falling apart -- this won't be the first time I've lived on the streets.  But in my 26 years, no one in my entire family has ever died.  I like to think that's my bit of luck; I've never had to deal with permanent loss.  And it makes me angry to think that I just assumed it was another quirk of his physiology, when it may have been the last time I'll ever get to see him alive.

More than a roommate, Sterling was a close friend, and the only one I'd ever actually smoke and drink with.  Until I found out he was in the hospital, whereupon I rounded up David and Peter, and we bonded, talked about the good times, the bad, and I slammed back ... 12+ shots.  At least.  David kept pace, and Peter called it quits when he got fall-down drunk.

David and I soldiered on; haven't talked to him, but I blacked out somewhere before the end of Spiderman 2.  Spent all yesterday feeling sick to my stomach, nauseated, and because I hadn't slept enough, mostly still drunk, too.  Headache's fading now, and I've got until tomorrow to round up rent money before the eviction is posted, and I'm given 14-30 days.

Job prospects looking bleak. -_-

Meh.  I guess it'll work out.  I mean.  It could turn out that the CAT scan didn't pick up anything, and Sterling just had an episode.  Maybe he'll come back tomorrow with rent and everything will work.  Hope for the best.

Plan for the worst.

:/

Wow, this is like, the earliest I've ever woken up voluntarily this summer. I have an interview/appointment thing in about an hour and a half. It's about a management position in Arby's. They aren't looking for someone with experience, since they will train, which is good news for someone like me who hasn't been able to join the workforce yet and needs to pay for college. I dunno what we are going to talk about but hopefully things will go well. Wish me luck!

My deepest sympathies, Brian. :( May everything go right with you.

I return from my trip to Ohio.

The funeral was tough.

Went to Atlantic City yesterday.

Won 175 playing poker for 3 hours and 25 on a spin on the roulette wheel = 200 bucks (for gas and sister's birthday present).

Have to program something else in Java today.

Computer is still busted

And that is what's new.

Not sure how to deal with positive factors in life.

Interview stage one: Passed.

Interview stage two: Results pending (but promising!)

Roommate doing better (they successfully drained both lesions).

Eviction ... failed.  County rejected the legal department's request because of a typo in the amount owed (they were 36 dollars off).  While the legal department is stunned for 1d6 days, I've got another chance to get payment to the office and ... not get evicted!

...I'm worried that this is just a lead-up to a bigger reversal of fortune. o_O

I live in Pusan, right under the predicted path of Typhoon(occasionally Super Typhoon) Navi.

Although they predict it's only going to be category 2 or 3 by the time it gets here, I'm gonna be keeping an eye on this one. It's kinda big.

In cooler news, I ended up not having to deliver my thesis progress report today. While I was working on it at the lab, my computer suddenly stopped working. We couldn't get it to boot, and it looks like the mainboard fried itself. Which is good, because I wasn't really done with it anyway, 2 hours before it was due. :)

Aside: I'm wrestling with depression.  I think it could be over my mom's repeated hospitalization (General Unwellness Syndrome).  It could be over Sterling's months-ago death, and I'm just not dealing with it well.  But I've got this stubborn belief that the fic I'm working on is, in fact, attrocious.  Which is why it's not being posted publically.

Work... nothing but work here... it's insane.

I'm setting up two whole new departments that have to be up and running on Monday.  I'm moving back to building 1, which is old and dingy, but has character.  It's not a bad thing, though I liked the shiny and new building 2.

On the plus side, I'm trying to arrange this so I have the right people under me rather than just those I inherrited.  Wish me luck on that one... it's a battle... and I just had to deal with a massive monkey-wrench today.

I don't think I'll end up with a 3-month promotion this time, but it'll be lateral... and way more responsibilities.

The things I do to try to get "Director" in my title and promotions for those who deserve it... :/

A splitting of paths lies ahead.

A lead tech position just opened up here at work. I have applied for the above mentioned position. I have decided to use this as a test to determine where I go from here.

I've been meaning to get back to and finish college for some time. If I get the lead position (which would mean possibly higher stress, but less direct dealing with idiots) I'm going to spend a few years, try to knock out my car loan, then look at getting back to school.

If I don't.... by the time my birthday rolls around, I'm going to try to get in applications/financial aid garbage for reenrollment in school, coupled with leaving the workforce completely - or almost completely.

I don't know what to hope for, honestly.
