Title: Universal translator?

Found a link to this in the Silver Hand forum today. Apparently it's legal, as both parties need to have the mod to understand one another.

Everyone's thoughts?

Interesting.

I'd hoped for the capacity to learn languages in-game, but apparently Blizzard doesn't want the alliance speaking with the horde.  If they allow this mod, I might get it, though.

I was reading over some of the documentation and comments on the page.  Someone said that being able to translate anyone, even without them having the mod, is against TOS.....but apparently this mod is not because both parties have to participate or something.

It seems a good idea, I guess, though I kind of enjoy not knowing what other people are saying.

And I remember Blizzard saying something about learning other languages in your own faction, but that's about it.

Screw this.  If you want to talk to the horde, go make a horde alt.  IMHO.  Making a mod to allow conversation is dodging the game mechanics in a seriously annoying fashion.  I can only hope it dies the desolate death of disuse.

Hey now. Look at Bly's adventuring party, the Cenarion Circle, the Un'Goro expedition, and the Argent Dawn, all of these are "non-aligned", contain Horde and Alliance races, and presumably they can communicate with each other. It is obviously possible in the game world, and Blizzard has said a system is coming to allow you to learn the other side's languages.

I sure hope so.

It seems odd to me that Shaya can get a quest from a Tauren NPC at the race-track, and a member of the horde next to her can get the same quest from the same NPC ... but they can't actually learn one-another's languages?  Or even a common one?

I said 'dodging the game mechanics'.  I'd like it if Blizzard let us learn horde languages.  But writing a mod for it?  Meh.  Fine, emotes are limited, but it's not an unbearable limitation.

I've teamed up with the horde to do quests before; I was scolded two days ago for really, really sucking over a half hour period in the plaguelands by a troll.  It's difficult, but it's fun, and until Blizzard does something official, I don't want my fun taken away by people relying on the thing.  Sure, it's selfish, but eh.

From a technical standpoint, I wonder how they'd do this without putting some really -odd- crap into the /say channel.  I admit I haven't looked into the scripting language at all, though.

But yes - I hope it dies the desolate death of disuse.

EDIT: Oh, wait, they DO put a whole bunch of garbage into the say channel.  Yay.
