Title: Valkyrie Profile

Any VP fans out there?

I can't imagine that any RPG with a level of innovation that puts even the original Xenogears in it's place can be completely ignored here!

I'm not sure if I could be considered a fan of it, but I'm in the middle of writing a review for it.

I've played through it but it didn't really jive with me.  Almost would've preferred a book telling me the story to playing the game.  Though, this could be because I never played the hidden dungeon.

not that surprising, I guess...  part of the downside to trying to be new and interesting in as many ways as possible almost necessarily means that people won't like some of it.

It's not a must-have, not a papagon of what RPG's should be, but nevertheless it deserves respect for taking so many chances and succeding as well as it did, considering.

I give praise for innovation sometimes, but I do have to consider that I find a lot of the latest trends of derivation and innovation disturbing.  Valkyrie Profile is an example of a game that did innovation fairly successfully.  So is, sadly, a lot of the recent Final Fantasy series of games.  I though look back on my own past couple decades of gaming and find the trends moving away from the types I like in the main stream.  With the popularization of innovation above all else, a lot of nifty stuff is being left in the past.  Stuff that not only worked, but worked well.
