Title: Betas, Free Games, Offers, etc
Post by: Merc on April 20, 2012, 12:15:43 PM
Figured I'd just make a thread where people can announce any of the topic stuff.

To start this off:

Betas
TERA Online (http://tera.enmasse.com/?lang=en): (Open Beta, Max Level 32, April 20-23) Make an account (http://account.enmasse.com/), click on enter code, type:TERABETA, install and play.
Diablo III (http://us.battle.net/d3/en/blog/4963739/Diablo%C2%AE_III_Open_Beta_Weekend-4_19_2012): (Stress Test/Open Beta, Max Level 13, April 20-23) Need to set up a Battle.net (http://us.battle.net/en/) account first, but if you already have one, just install and play.

Bundles
Most people know of these two, and are probably signed up for email warnings of new bundles, but since they're currently running bundles...
Indie Royale (http://www.indieroyale.com/): Frequently has new bundles (every 2 weeks roughly) consisting of 5-6 games.
Humble Bundle (http://www.humblebundle.com/): Less frequent and game quantity/quality can vary wildly. Chunk of the money goes to charity too.

On a non-gaming side of thing:
Tee-Fury (http://www.teefury.com/): $10 shirt deal, only one shirt offered for a day, then gone and replaced by a new shirt. Shirts are usually pretty geeky references. Some of the older shirts are still available through the artists, so it can be worth checking out the gallery of old shirts. Actually, worth it even if you don't want to buy them, some of the shirts are pretty amusing and/or awesome.

shirt.woot.com (http://shirt.woot.com) does the same shirt-a-day thing. just not always as geeky. (Yesterday's was "Marauder Shields", though; a ME3 ending meme.)

Free Games
Midnight Club II (http://steamcommunity.com/games/rockstargames/announcements/detail/1045078427175199696): (Racing Game, by Rockstar Games) You get steam code for it on May 29th if you join their official steam group by May 15th.

I bought the latest bundle but got an extra copy of bastion.

First person who is interested in a Bastion Steam key and replies here can have it.

Post by: Squibidyflop on June 01, 2012, 10:28:48 AM
I'd like the Bastion key if you don't want it, it's the only game from this bundle I want and I don't really want to pay whatever the average is for the one game I want.

Unless you feel it's worth the $15 on Steam?

It probably is worth that much on steam.  But okay!

The latest humble bundle updated again.  Okay, hear me out.

I know they added Braid, but don't let that dissuade you!  Just because you have that game, you don't have to play it, and Psychonauts is still worth it!  It also has Super Meat Boy (meh, got it in the last Christmas bundle), and something called Lone Survivor.  Not sure what that's about.
Title: Re: Betas, Free Games, Offers, etc
Post by: Grahf on June 08, 2012, 06:02:18 AM
What's wrong with Braid, out of curiosity? Also, Lone Survivor is another indie horror game I believe.

Braid is pretentious as all hell, and the story is very much a non-reward, should you get the entire thing.

Grahf:

Also, the author is a pretentious blowhard who belittles other creative professionals, so some of us are against supporting him in any way.  He threw a huge fit about not winning best written indie game according to the writer's guild the year braid came out, despite not being willing to even fill out the application form.  But no, he's awesome, and the people who did win totally didn't deserve being recognized for their quality work and creative guilds are stupid baby heads. :P

The annual Steam summer sale is on. Notable stuff for today is a temporary sale on Saints Row III at a 75% discount for the next four hours. Lots of bundles and games on for pennies on the dollar. I'm sure that anyone interested knows the deal(s) by now, but just in case.

Free BioShock (first game) at GameFly. They're celebrating their launch or something.

http://www.gamefly.com/Download-BioShock/150930/

Note that you have to give credit card info as part of their anti-abuse policy for multiple downloads and such. You don't get charged anything, but may still be a hassle to people. Also, you'd have to download their client, which is another client to keep track of.

Do *you* want to save damsels?

Do *you* want a Wushu MMO that keeps your character logged in and subject to side jobs and kidnapping?!

It's not a penalty function. You character basically becomes an NPC. Your 'jobs' give you money, items, and/or experience for doing those jobs. The kidnapping is a PVP/story function. 'Evil' PCs can get missions to kidnap people and then sell them. When you log back in, you get a short story instance where you fight your way out.

You don't actually lose anything or get penalized in any way. It's supposed to be a story/character life continuation sort of thing.

Planetside 2 is out now.  It's free-to-play with a micro-transaction model to support it.  The theory of the game is a work of art:

Squad-based combat in a futuristic setting where your army/faction battles for supremacy against other armies to control nodes and resources.  The game gives you vehicles, a variety of weapons....  In short, it sounds like it would be a lot of fun!

Unfortunately, the people in charge of the game weren't actually cool with the idea of people having fun.  So what they did, is they let people who had played from beta keep the unlocks they had earned, jacked the prices way up, and then set up a pricing scheme where you're enticed to pay cash -- for a monthly account (even though the game is free to play) to get an EXP bonus.  That makes a nice disparity between those who have all the nice little unlocked perks for their various classes already, establishing the beta community as the upper echelon before the game even starts.

You'd think that's bad, but then, they also decided that the game should have friendly fire enabled at all times.  Evidently there's a precedent, as the first game also had friendly fire, and the community learned to embrace it (read: all the non-hardcores found better games to play).  The friendly fire thing is really, really terrible, and at present (and the only chance I'm willing to give this game) makes it totally unplayable.

Everyone looks pretty much the same, but there are tiny, subtle indicators that let you be _sure_ you're looking at a player of the wrong faction.  You might even be able to spot one or two in the amount of time it takes the other player to shoot you!  But probably not.  Another thing the game isn't big on is 'survivability'.  At least from launch, without any beta hand-ups or dropping cash on it, you can be killed from full health to dead in under two seconds by enemy fire.  (Faster if they hit you with tanks/bombs, but we're just talking about handheld weapons, here.)

If someone can die from incoming small arms fire faster than you can switch weapons, then your game isn't actually 'tactical' at all -- it's purely 'weight of numbers'.  There's no skill involved in those matchups.  While you can jump and act as skilled as you want, 99 times out of 100 your side wins because there are more of you.  There's a good chance you won't see or be anywhere near the action when the game tells you 'good job; your side won something!'

I first played the game, and got really upset with it -- because I spent too much time looking at the 'you will respawn in 10+ seconds' screen.  In fact, I would bet solid money I spent more time looking at that screen than actually playing the game.  More than 50% of my deaths were to friendly fire (it tells you), or were just my level one self being murdered by random passers-by.  Oh, a level 15 guy killed me.  And a level 9.  And a level 12 -- on my own side.

After trying to get some form of enjoyment out of the game, frustrated that it wasn't my speed, and they chose to destroy a cool concept with some terrible, terrible ideas (ie., damage that high + respawn timer = bad decision.  Friendly fire = bad decision.  Give 'grandfathered' players a marked advantage over anyone joining now = bad decision.), I quit it.

And then was browbeaten and had my opinions 'corrected' and ultimately was coerced into playing it again.

"It's about the team experience!  You have to play with friends!"

So I did that for a few hours.

And with friends....

It's the exact same @#$%ing experience, only with occasional very, very long stretches of standing around with absolutely nothing to do because no one is in sight and we're defen-- *two shots from an assault rifle later, back to respawn and by the way we lost that base*.   My impression is that you will basically go through around 4 hours of just crappy experience -- running around looking for action, dying, being one-shot by snipers ($%#@ you, whoever thought, 'Let's design a class that is only powerful when it has the element of surprise; let's also give them mechanics and tools to ensure they always have it' was going to be great in games.  I'm looking at _you_ rogues, snipers, and any other class that exists only to gank), or otherwise just wasting your time ... for around 10 minutes of getting lucky and managing to destroy a bunch of people who are doing their 4 hours of being a mook, waiting for their own 10 minutes of glory.

Really ... in that light, I'm pretty sure I did nothing the entire time I played except be a mook for someone else's story.  This game is EVE as an FPS.  Are you willing to spend 4 hours of staring at respawn timers and being gunned down because you weren't lucky, or your spawn point was flooded with enemy soldiers before you finished loading, just for 10 minutes of not dying?  If so, this game may be for you.

It's a frustrating, unrewarding, just _bad_ experience, and thanks to being forced to spend extra time with it, I really, really hate it.  Which is a pity, because I like the idea.  But I don't think _anyone_ likes having nothing to do but _lose_ ... and that's the only option the game actually presented me with.

But hey.  At least we know for certain.
Title: Re: Betas, Free Games, Offers, etc
Post by: Grahf on November 30, 2012, 03:48:29 AM
Wow, that sounds pretty awful. I can somewhat understand why the devs might think that letting the betas keep their goodies would be a good idea in some cases, but this really doesn't seem like one of them. Even if that weren't the case though, what you've described just sounds like an unbalanced, poor playing mess.

Anyways, to sort of keep this on topic, there's a new Humble Bundle out. This one is from THQ. It consists of Darksiders, Red Faction: Armageddon, Metro 2033, Company of Heroes and its expansions, and paying above the curve gets you Saints Row the Third.
Title: Re: Betas, Free Games, Offers, etc
Post by: Brian on November 30, 2012, 11:22:58 AM
I had a really bad experience with it.  Others might not.  In my view, vs. games are inherently zero-sum because winning is fun and losing is not; someone has to have a bad day.  But that's just me.

Back on topic ... anyone want a Saints Row the Third steam key?
Title: Re: Betas, Free Games, Offers, etc
Post by: JonBob on December 05, 2012, 04:52:39 PM
So, I also tried Planetside 2, so I'll give my thoughts on that. I've played other FPS games (CS [1.6,S,GO], L4D[2], TF2) and other games with capture objectives (GW2, UT2K4), so I have some experiences to compare it to.

The biggest obstacle to getting into the game is figuring out the interface and the controls. I died numerous times within the first 10 minutes of being in the game. Sadly, a number of those were being telefrag'd by spawned vehicles. As for the combat itself, it felt a big CoD/CS-like, where you're actually fairly fragile. Once I figured out the general movement and gun characteristics, I was able to go out and get shot from a helicopter in the sky and die. Then I found someone and shot them, but they were a teammate. Then I killed an enemy!

I hooked up with a friend, and that was its own set of challenges. The map and warping system is not overly clear and I struggled to figure out where the squad was. I eventually got that. After that, things really improved. I was able to more easily determine when someone was an ally or not (minimal vs zero indicators), I got some kills, and I was able to go around and actually participate in point capture.

Friendly fire wasn't an issue when I was playing, so I didn't really get shot in the back by allies; I probably shot more than got shot :(  Engagement-to-death window was pretty small, but about the same as a lot of other games. Respawn timers were a momentum killer, but it also helped you to figure out where you are and where you're going next.

So, to get the best beginner experience out of it, you'll probably want to find the zerg as soon as possible and join that. Others provide vehicles and directions so you always know where to go, and with other allies around, there are more targets for the enemy, so you can stand a chance. Also, it allows you more room for mistakes. You and an ally shooting a single guy, you'll probably win, even if you're almost dead by the end.

Assuming that you have Steam and are a Windows user, there's an offer floating around that may be of some interest.

THQ is giving away free Metro 2033 keys to anyone who likes the Facebook page. It's probably to drum up interest in the sequel, and for THQ itself. If you're interested in picking up the game you can go to http://www.freemetrogame.com/ (http://www.freemetrogame.com/) to get a copy. They have said something about limited numbers, but how limited is unknown. Also, offer only valid until the 16th, or until codes run out, whichever comes first.

Oh, right, Path of Exile just started their open beta... yesterday?  Two days ago?

I've played maybe 5 hours of it (which is about as long as a number of modern $60 games) and I really enjoyed it.

As for what Path of Exile is?  It's basically Diablo 2, with the Sphere Grid from Final Fantasy X, and Materia Junctioning from Final Fantasy 7.

Oh, and no gold and no auction house.  Give it a try!  The devs are very active and friendly, and seem very committed to improving their game.

According to Nintendo, the way to download The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition is fairly simple: "Just go to Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS from Thursday, Jan 30, at 9am (PST) until Sunday, Feb 2, at 11:59pm (PST) to download the game for free!"

Warning: You might have to fight through 15 minutes of new system crap that they've tossed in during the last month since I bought shit from them :P

Not sure how much interest there would be in this, but apparently groupon sometimes has deals for card/board games. Who knew?

Game in question is the DC Deck Building (http://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-dc-comics-deck-building-game-3) game, which is a pretty fun deckbuilder for people that might like games like Dominion. Or just DC superheroes/villains in general.

GOG has a sale (http://www.gog.com/gamerumble) where you vote for preselected selected groups of games to get discounts: winner gets 75% off, losers are 60% off.

It's on day 2 atm.

The current humble bundle deal is themed flying and one of the games is Guns of Icarus. I figured I'd toss a link to them, as it's a multiplayer game that we could all possibly play on an SR game night one week.

https://www.humblebundle.com/

It ends in 6 hours (11am PST/2pm EST), so there's not exactly a lot of warning in this post, though hopefully people that wanted to chip into this bundle were already aware of it since it's been on for a while and humble bundle's been mentioned plenty of times before in the past in this thread.

GOG is running a "flash deals" event where they deeply discount games for a few hours.  Some well-regarded classics are part of the lineup (As of this post, Master of Orion 1+2 and Total Annilation are on sale for $1.50 for <3 hrs).

I'm not the sort of person who is going to camp a webpage to save a few bucks, but if any of you are, perhaps this is your event.

Other than Dragon Age: Awakening and Assassins Creed 2, are there any good games going to be released soon?

Um, in what genre? Far Cry 4 is out. The new Final Fantasy is out. New Civilization. CoD Advanced Warfare is getting good reviews. The Borderlands Pre-sequel. Those are ones that are out now.

Coming up, there's Batman: Arkham Knight, GTA V, Pillars of Eternity, The Witcher 3, and Crusader Kings 2, all in 2015.

On a different note, if you've never played it, I highly suggest picking up Spec Ops: The Line on sale somewhere.

Not video game related, but for anyone that is into deckbuilding games Dominion (http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/36218/dominion) is currently on rollback/sale at Walmart for $14.19.

For comparison: The MSRP (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price) is $44.99. Amazon sells at $34.99, CoolstuffInc at $29.99, and Board Game Warehouse at $28.82.

It's not the best deckbuilder (IMO), but at that price it's really not a bad game to pick up. And if you enjoy it, there's like 10+ expansions which you can invest in to make it more replayable (although none of those are on sale).

Anyway: The walmart link is http://www.walmart.com/ip/Rio-Grande-Games-Dominion-Board-Games/20576526

So speaking of card games, the latest Humble Bundle (https://www.humblebundle.com/) is for a bunch of online-based card games.

Can't really say much for this bundle though...I've not had experience with most of those games, I've only ever played Star Realms as a physical game, and I found Dominion and Magic:Planeswalkers to be dull (but I played older versions, so they may have improved since?).

For anybody interested in board games that has a nearby Barnes & Noble (or various), they're having a 50% off clearance sale which can often include those.

Your mileage may vary, but I found two tables full of various different board games when I went by today.

During other B&N sales though, I've been lucky if I've found three different games on sales.

For more interest in board games:
https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly <-- Humble Bundle Weekly has a couple of digital board games and is ongoing for another four days.

International Tabletop Day (random thing that Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day came up with that retailers are using to sell games) is today, so there are a lot of sales at:
CoolStuff Inc (http://www.coolstuffinc.com/page/1175)
CardHaus (http://www.cardhaus.com/)
Amazon Deals of the Day (http://www.amazon.com/b/ref=lp_11161423011_gbsl_tit_l-1_8122_48afe0c1?rh=i%3Atoys-and-games%2Cn%3A11161423011&ie=UTF8&node=11161423011&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER)
Board Game Warehouse (http://boardgamewarehouse.com/deals-and-specials/deal-of-the-day.html)

Amazon has free shipping at $35+ (or Prime), CSI & BGW have free shipping at $100+, and CardHaus has free shipping at $125+.

https://www.massdrop.com/buy/trains-board-game-bundle?mode=guest_open

Above is a deal for the board game Trains and its expansion Rising Sun for $39.99, with shipping in the US at $11.06 (so a total of $51.05).

That's about 37.5% off OLGS prices, and 57.5% off FLGS/retail price.

I'm debating on this one myself, as I'm not sure how often it'd see play, but the base game is fun, and I've heard good things about the expansion. It's a deckbuilder game, very Dominion-like, that also incorporates a board game with elements of railroad building games like Ticket to Ride, by creating train routes and expanding them on the board to connect cities.

Still, it's a really good price, and if someone enjoys Dominion but doesn't own it, it's probably a cheaper investment than getting Dominion and it's ten or so expansions.

https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/indivisible-an-rpg-by-lab-zero-and-505-games#/

Lab Zero (Skullgirls' studio) is crowdfunding an RPG/metroidvania style game and has a 30-40 min demo to play around with and see if it's something anybody here might want to help fund.

I found it a little repetitive combat-wise (though it is just a demo right now so hard to tell if that's going to be the norm or just a preview limitation), and its definitely pretty to look at.

Worth checking out the demo if you have a free hour, at the least.

Above has a link where you can register for a chance at winning 10 copies of TTS, even if you already have it. They ask for your email, first name and steam profile url (you can find it with http://steamidfinder.com/).

Thought it'd be neat to get for SR board game nights if anybody here gets lucky (and has the interest to sign up). I'm somewhat debating whether to pick it up while it's on sale this week, but the fact that nobody in my steam friends list even has it...

There was a GOG sale a month or two ago, with free games if you hit some arbitrary goal.  I hit the goals.  However, I'm realistically unlikely to get around to playing them, and hadn't even noticed that I had unlocked them - I was just interested in buying a couple of games I'd been long interested in, and which were part of the sale.

The codes expire on Dec 15th by midnight GMT (which is 7pm EST), so if anyone is interested and has a GOG account, feel free to take them (and preferably post here that you've done so)

I've previously written about Star Ruler 2 here: http://www.soulriders.net/forum/index.php/topic,2263.msg1108755.html#msg1108755

The game is now open source under the MIT license, and therefore free if you have Visual Studio.  The source is here: https://github.com/BlindMindStudios/StarRuler2-Source

A link to compilation instructions for people who have never used Visual Studio is here: https://www.giantbomb.com/star-ruler-2/3030-49167/forums/how-to-compile-star-ruler-2-on-windows-10-1840621/

A fairly good video of gameplay, with brief explanations of what is happening:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gz9hdModOW8  It uses a "challenging" race that is robotic and doesn't need food, so has a somewhat different playstyle than a more standard race.
