With guile, personal magnetism, and a formidable sword arm, the mysterious Lady of the Lotus managed to enforce her will upon an unruly mob of thieves, for a brief time turning them into something more threatening that stood on the cusp of controlling Salerno's underworld. She thought Lavinia's employees could be persuaded into her service and attempted to test them, but upon sensing they intended to betray her took pre-emptive steps to end the threat. Her actions weren't sufficiently overwhelming, and soon found her guild ravaged by their counterattack. In the end she was too proud and distrusting to countenance surrender, and died as a mere stepping stone on their journey.

The younger brother of Lavinia Vanderboren, Vanthus is oft recalled as a mischevious and outgoing youngster, often getting into pranks with his sister, much to the consternation of their parents. The prank which must not be named was a step too far, however, and saw both of them sent away from Salerno. While Lavinia went to finishing school in the capital, Vanthus went to help out at his uncle's plantation in Burnriver... and rapidly grew bitter and resentful for the experience. Upon returning to Salerno he was a changed man, more quick to snarl than to smile, and more cruel than mischevious.

His good looks and bad boy aura were a hit with the ladies, however, and soon brought him into the orbit of the notorious Lotus Dragons. Who was truly the worst in that partnership is hard to say, but it was while in the embrace of the Lady of the Lotus that he formulated his despicable plan to murder his parents, expecting to inherit the Vanderboren title. Outraged when it passed to his sister, he settled for robbing the family vault blind before she could gain access herself, using it to fund the Lotus Dragon's rapid ascent in Salerno's underworld... and sowing the seeds for its downfall when Lavinia finally sent her employees after her brother and the missing money.

Nonetheless he himself managed to stay one step ahead of pursuit, up until his plan to rob the Collective went terribly wrong, and a nightmarish plague was unleashed. Fleeing from his now mutated accomplices, he somehow crossed the stricken island to seek shelter in the isolated and reasonably fortified lighthouse, bluffing away his own involvement in the calamity and biding his time until rescue could arrive. Unfortunately for him, rescue came in the form of his outraged sister's employees, and his crimes were swiftly answered for.

Seemingly a common stray hound, val found his destiny entwined with Henrietta's when his barking alerted the sorceress to an assassin in her midst. Since being chosen to accompany her on her adventures, he served with dilligence and constant good cheer, at times truly seeming to be a hound blessed by the Gods as Vriskna claimed. Whether this was true or he was merely bolstered by that woman's magic, it does nothing to take away from his service as a stalwart guardian and companion who always put his mistress ahead of himself.

Alas in the end a mere dog, no matter how heroic, could not stand against the wrath of a monstrously strengthened great cat, and Val was slain while battling for control of the strange and supposedly haunted lighthouse near Lessmus.
