<Prince_Herb> Having opened the lock on the back door, he now finds himself looking out of the open scullery door into the hallway connecting kitchen, scullery and dining room
* Celanyth sneaks to the shadowed side of the door and takes a quick glance out into the hallway.
<Prince_Herb> It's clear
<Prince_Herb> There are three other doors off the hallway, two of which must connect to the kitchen and the dining room
<Prince_Herb> It's lit by a pair of candle lanterns hanging from the low roof
* Celanyth tries to sneak over to the third room, the one not connecting to the Kitchen or Dining rooms.

* Celanyth edges out into the main hall, leaving the door open a bare crack to keep it from making noise incase he needs to dart back in.
<Prince_Herb> You see the main entrance way facing the stairs, a doorway that must lead to the dining room and whatever other rooms are near it, a couple of doors on the wall facing it, and a rather large chandelier above you
<Prince_Herb> There are a few paintings on the wall, portraits of guildsmen, and landscapes
* Celanyth heads to the closest room without a light on and listens for any sound from within.

<Prince_Herb> Peering in, Celanyth sees that this is a comfortable drawing room, with velvet sofas, nice paintings on the wall, and all the comforts of home for the travelling merchant
* Celanyth checks the paintings to see if they hide anything behind them, and searches for anything of value.

* Celanyth draws a dagger, holds it blade down over his heart, and bows to the bouncer before entering the inn.

* Hidoyou approaches one of the milling citizens
<Hidoyou> Where is 'Three South Street'?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The man points to the road running off from the square on which the inn stands
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "yonder is South Street.   Number three is about halfway along."
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The schoolmaster's house is easy to find - the merry voices of children ringing out from inside lets you know where it is long before you reach the door to read the sign

<Prince_Herb[bbl]> After a few moments, the door is opened by a small child, revealing the classroom beyond.   There are ten or so children of both sexes sitting cross-legged on the floor before the blackboard, their slates on their laps.

<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The teacher is a tall, skinny man, with a mop of unruly reddish hair, wearing the traditional robes of the schoolmaster/wizard/wise councillor

<Hidoyou> I wish to speak to the school master
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The teacher looks at Hidoyou, an expression of wide-eyed interest on his face.   "Oh, sure, come right in!   Be quiet for a moment, children!"

* Hidoyou gazes around the room out of the corners of his eyes
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> It seems safe
* Hidoyou walks towards the school master
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The schoolmaster holds out his hand.   "Dubricus d'Amberville.   Pleased to meet you."
<Hidoyou> I am... Hidoyou
<Hidoyou> I am told you have the only library in town. I wish to... use it
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Sure!" he says.   "I didn't take you for a reader, but sure!"

<Prince_Herb[bbl]> He shows you the bookshelf in the corner of the room, which has a couple of dozen books on it, and a few more placed on the floor next to it.

* Hidoyou picks up the books on the floor and looks at them
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Principles of Mathematics" ; "A child's garden of verse" ; "The agricultural year"...

* Hidoyou sits down uncomfortably and begins to skim through the book
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> It tells you how the town was founded and how adventurers wiped out the evil humanoids in the Caves of Chaos, the lizardmen in the swamp, and so on, bringing about a new age of peace and prosperity
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> There is also a map
* Hidoyou studies the map
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> This place isn't large.   The Caves of Chaos are only about a mile to the east of here in the forest
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The most interesting thing from your point of view is the mention of a labyrinth within the caves which skirts the fringes of reality and perdeption
* Hidoyou reads more about it interestedly
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The book doesn't say much about it except that it's very dangerous, and occupied by a minotaur
* Hidoyou searches the book for anything else of interest
* Hidoyou returns the book to the shelf after having finished with it
* Hidoyou looks for any other book that might be of interest
* Hidoyou surveys his surroundings again
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> There's not a great deal concerning the planes or magic in that collection, you discern
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The children are doing basic arithmetic, you notice
* Hidoyou walks towards the school master
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> The schoolmaster looks up as you approach him.   "Did you find what you were looking for?"
<Hidoyou> Perhaps.
<Hidoyou> What do you know of the 'Caves of Chaos'?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Oh, they're famous around here," he says.   "They're filled with monsters and treasure and magic, they say."
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "I had a plan once to go there and look."
<Hidoyou> Why didn't you?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Oh, I couldn't find anyone who wanted to go with me.  I needed someone to carry the treasure for me, and fight the monsters."
<Hidoyou> These caves interest me...
<Hidoyou> Tell me about them
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "They're dotted all around a horseshoe shaped valley, the valley where the Goblinwater rises, and some people say that they all link up.   Each one has a different kind of monster in it, or at least they did once.   Maybe the bandits live there now, I don't know.   There's sure to be treasure, though.   Caves mean treasure."
<Hidoyou> The book I read mentioned a minotaur. There are other monsters?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Sure!   Gnolls and orcs and ogres and goblins and kobolds!   I haven't seen any of them, but I'm sure they're there, or if not them, other monsters."
<Hidoyou> Do you know anything about the 'labyrinth'?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Oh, sure!   There's some kind of spell on it that makes it impossible to navigate, so no one knows where it leads to.   It could go anywhere!"
<Hidoyou> Impossible to navigate? Troubling.
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Or so they say.   I have a plan to deal with that, but it needs someone to ward off the blows of the minotaurs while paying out the string."
<Hidoyou> Tell me about your plan
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> He tells you about his plan to use reels of knotted string payed out behind the exploring group, and posting guards to stop the minotaurs cutting it
<Hidoyou> Would such a simple plan work?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Perhaps not.   That's why I needed the sausages."
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Minotaurs love sausages,"
<Hidoyou> Sausages...
* Hidoyou looks slightly incredulous
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "So, we'd distract them with a plate of sausages, perhaps drugged, and then they'd let the string alone."
<Hidoyou> How big is this labyrinth?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "Immeasurable!" he says, "or at least no one knows."
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "So we might need a lot of sausages.   And we'd have to keep them warm somehow."
<Hidoyou> Is there anything else useful that you could tell me about these caves?
<Prince_Herb[bbl]> He looks at you unsurely.  "Well, they say that the lower down the slopes the caves are, the easier they are.   The toughest monsters take the highest caves, I think."

<Prince_Herb[bbl]> "well, if I'm not too busy with schoolwork, I may accompany you," he says.   "YOu look strong enough to carry the treasure."
