* Mitchigan heads down stairs into the common room, yawning and dragging a bed-raggled backpack with him...
<Celanyth> "Ah! Mitchigan! Thanks for watching my gear for me."
* Celanyth takes the pack and slips it on, patting Mitchigan on the shoulder with a grin.
* Hidoyou looks at Mitchigan
<Mitchigan> Yes well... It certyainly wasn't a comfortable experience, but I kept my word.
* Mitchigan bids everyone "Good Morrow"
<thorn> so why don't you guys come along with us? We can have a pleasant picnic and help our environment
* Mitchigan blinks...
<Mitchigan> Environment?
<Celanyth> "He's still rambling about the Nymph."
<thorn> "it's what a good person would care about...", /me wheedles
<Mitchigan> Oh.
<thorn> "so, what do you say, Mitchigan?"
* Mitchigan frowns for a monent and then nods firmly...
<Mitchigan> VERY WELL THEN!!! FOR THE GREATER GOOD!!!!!
<thorn> "Excellent! You, Celanyth, and I shall embark on an adventure!"
<Celanyth> "I will?"
<thorn> "and perhaps you, Hidoyou , feel like a day of peace and relaxation?"
* Mitchigan turns to Celanith, "You will? GREAT!!!"
* Mitchigan frowns as his stomach grumbles...
<Mitchigan> After breakfast though... Justice needs sustinance!
* Mitchigan wanders off to grab something to eat...
<thorn> "Sounds like we should go buy some supplies. We need to get some picnic baskets, some food, and then supplies for cleaning the river"
* Mitchigan stops.
* Celanyth stares at Thorn.
<Celanyth> "I think you're taking this too far."
<Mitchigan> Cleaning a river? Um... why not just dump tons of potions of Cure Poisons and Cure Disease into the source?
<thorn> "You're from a rich family, aren't you, Mitchigan ?"
<Mitchigan> And here I thought we were going to slay a corrupt elemential or something.
<thorn> "Besides, magic is pure and powerful... why use it when we can just hoist a few dead animals out of a stream?"
<thorn> "What, are you trying to do good in this world, or selfishly seek glory for yourself?"
<Mitchigan> I intend to do good and to SELFLESSLY seek glory for myself!
* thorn jumps to my feet
<Mitchigan> I mean... What kind of a paladin does things selfishly?
<thorn> "You know, I'm starting to get the feeling that people aren't concerned about the river."
* Mitchigan sighs...
<thorn> "I'm sick of it! We all need that water.  What sort of beer would Master Mulligan be brewing without good water? What profiteth man a good soul if he can't drink?"
* thorn glares
<Mitchigan> Very well M'lady... If you feel so strongly about it, I shall lend you my services.
* thorn glares harder. "Fine."
<Mitchigan> You have my sword...
* Hidoyou says to Mitchigan, "The water is irrelevant. You're Chandor's man, right?"
<Celanyth> "Ya know.. I can't seem to ever recall caring about being clean whilst drunk.."
* Mitchigan whispers to Hidoyou. "Well, if it shuts her up..."
<Mitchigan> Besides, I don't see Chandor here at the moment...
<thorn> "So what say you, Hidoyou?"
* Celanyth leans over to Hidoyou.
<Celanyth> "I suppose we could go with them. It'd be funny to see what kind of trouble they bring. And watch them make asses out of themselves."
<Hidoyou> I've got somewhere to go
* Mitchigan shakes his head, and wanders off to grab breakfast...
<thorn> "Jess, could you bring us some pease porridge? My treat, of course."
<Sailor_Dragon> "It's not pease porridge, just oats," JEss says, but brings you some quickly
* Mitchigan returns to the table with an annoyed frown...
* Celanyth begins eating some of the breakfast.
<Mitchigan> Well, that's certainly vexing...
<thorn> "what happened?"
<Mitchigan> They don't serve beer this early...
* Mitchigan asks the waitress if they have any sausages...
<Sailor_Dragon> "Sure," she says
<Mitchigan> Well, I'll have Sausages with eggs then.
<thorn> OK, I'm off to go buy the picnic items and nets... anything else you guys think I'd need?"
* Celanyth continues to eat.
* Hidoyou looks at the barkeep
<Hidoyou> Where can I find this hunter you spoke of?
* thorn heads, passing over my shoulder, "It was good to meet you, Hidoyou, Chandor. Celanyth, if you could ask around about the way to the source, that'd be good. We'll meet in an hour outside, ok?"
* thorn leaves
<Sailor_Dragon> "Next door in the One-Eyed Cat," he says, "sinking beers as fast as they come."
* Hidoyou nods
* Mitchigan watches the waitress leave to get him is breakfast, "My... quite the mammal she is!"
* Hidoyou leaves for the One-Eyed Cat
* Celanyth grumbles and picks up his bowl, heading for the Tavern-keep.
* Mitchigan asks Celanyth, "Where are you going?"
<Sailor_Dragon> Hidoyou walks through the connecting door into the tavern, where already a handful of hardened drinkers are at work, one o fthem the hunter COb
* Hidoyou looks at the drinkers
<Celanyth> "Hey, Wilf, got a question... You happen to know where that little river outside of town starts?"
<Sailor_Dragon> "Which river?" he asks.   "The Ware springs way up in the mountains."
<Celanyth> "Hmm, how far into the mountians? Any idea?"
<Sailor_Dragon> "Not really, never travelled that far."
<Celanyth> "Right, thanks."
* Celanyth sets the bowl down and heads back to the table.
* Hidoyou addresses the drinkers. "Who will go to the 'Caves of Chaos'?"
<Sailor_Dragon> "..."
<Sailor_Dragon> There is no intelligible response
<Hidoyou> roll 1d20+4 to intimidate the nearest one
* Musk-bot --> "Hidoyou rolls 1d20+4 to intimidate the nearest one and gets 9."
<Hidoyou> Answer me...
<Sailor_Dragon> They seem not to realise you're seriously addressing them, and continue drinking
<Hidoyou> This is pointless
* Hidoyou walks away
<Sailor_Dragon> "Who was that, then?" you hear one of the drinkers say as you walk back through into the inn
* Celanyth gets up and streches, and heads back to Wilf.
<Celanyth> "Wilf, do you know how far up the river the bandits make camp? Or know someone who does?"
* Hidoyou says to Celanyth irritably, "The Goblinwater springs out from the Caves of Chaos."
<Celanyth> "Oh? Heh. Looks like Thorn's little trip is going to be more fun then he thought. You're headed up there, right?"
<Hidoyou> Yes
* thorn sneezes
<Celanyth> "Looks like we're going with you, then."
* Celanyth grins at Hidoyou.
* Hidoyou looks over towards thorn, coming through the door
<Celanyth> "Guess what Thorn!"
* Celanyth greets Thorn cheerfully.
<thorn> "What? Oh, I remember she said something about bandits, btw, so I bought some more arrows."
* thorn tosses 10 arrows or so across to celanyth
<Celanyth> "Yep! And guess where the source is?"
<thorn> "North?"
* Celanyth grabs them and slips them latterally, under the top flap of his pack.
<Celanyth> "Seems the source is in the Caves of Chaos.. Which happens to be exactly where Hidyou here is headed to."
* Celanyth smirks at Thorn.
<thorn> "Hurray! Good thing I bought some extra sausage."
* thorn also smirks conspiratorially and holds up a flask of obviously potent alcohol.
<Mitchigan> M'lady... you shouldn't have!!!
<Hidoyou> It seems as though just the five of us will be going...
* Mitchigan makes a grab for the flask...
* Hidoyou looks outside to get a gauge of the time
<Sailor_Dragon> It's still before noon
* Celanyth heads over to the bouncer, using the little sign language he knows in an attempt to explain what the group is planning.
<Hidoyou> If we leave now, we'll get there by nightfall...
<Mitchigan> roll 1d20+1+3

* Mitchigan hangs his head and snaps his fingers...
<Mitchigan> Nuts.
<Hidoyou> Who is ready to leave?
<thorn`> "We're all going together? I am!"
<Celanyth> "I'm ready, I suppose. Might as well get this over with>"
<Mitchigan> Let me pack my things...
* thorn` gestures to chandor. "What about the priest?"
<Hidoyou> He's coming with us
* Mitchigan walks into the in, and a few minutes later emerges with his backpack and sword...
<Mitchigan> Right... Good to go now.
<thorn`> "Excellent! So, where are these Caves of Chaos? You know, that's a pretty spooky name?"
* thorn` grabs my own bag and is ready to go
<Mitchigan> Yes... Trully minions of evil must gather there! We must go forth and slay them!!!
* Celanyth checks over his gear, setting his daggers in place, checking his bowstring, checking the straps on his armor, and inspecting his arrows.
<Mitchigan> For the Greater Good!!!
* Hidoyou sighs
* Hidoyou shoulders his backpack and begins walking towards the door
* Celanyth follows after Hidoyou.
<thorn`> "To adventure!"
* Mitchigan nods, "FOR GREAT JUSTICE!!!"
<thorn`> "Lead on, brave scout!" Obviously, I had a drink or two while I was out
* Mitchigan grins, and boldly strides after Hidoyou...
* Celanyth grunts and comes up next to Hidoyou.
<Celanyth> "They get annoyin' after a while.. How the hell did we end up with *two* of them?"
* Rakhal is now known as Chandor
<Sailor_Dragon> Boldly, the party heads out of the keep, takes the diversion to avoid the section of road that's crumbling into the lake, and eventually arrives at the point where the rusty red Goblinwater meets the Great North ROad
* Hidoyou looks at the river
* Chandor does too. Dye possibilities?
<Mitchigan> By the gods... what vile evil has stricken these waters!?
<Celanyth> "That's part of what we're going to find out."
<thorn`> maybe... maybe... it's for a festival? Some sorceror was hired to turn the waters red for a party
<Mitchigan> Those darn sorcerers.
* Hidoyou follows the river
<thorn`> "Magic will turn the world into a place of mystery and entertainment," that's for sure
<Hidoyou> Let's go
<Mitchigan> "But with great power comes even greater responsibility." THat's what my master said before he went off on his journey and left me behind so that I may learn more about the world I will one day protect.
<thorn`> "Sure, responsibility... make sure you get paid, you don't harm the profit stream and keep on friendly terms with the customers."
* thorn` waves dismissively
* Mitchigan frowns at that but says nothing.
<Sailor_Dragon> Following on a winding path through the dark forest that presses close on either side brings you at last through the thick belt of trees and to the entrance of what's either a large ravine or a small canyon, depending on your point of view.
<Sailor_Dragon> You'd estimate it's well over four hundred feet long and over a hundred feet wide.
<Sailor_Dragon> The narrow stream thatparallelled the path trickles down the centre of the ravine, forming great muddy puddles in several places, its source hidden in the trees that cluster at the far end of the ravine.
<Sailor_Dragon> Several other clumps of trees could hide almost anything up to and possibly including a giant.
* Chandor eyes the trees and tries to see if anything hides within.
* Hidoyou unslings his shield
<Sailor_Dragon> The walls of the ravine slope up steeply on either side - you have no doubt you could climb them, but you'd need both hands.
<Sailor_Dragon> Several cave mouths are visible on the slopes, crude paths leading up to them ; more may be hidden by the trees.
<thorn`> "eww, mud. OK, I think we're close to the source, shall we break out the baskets?"
<Hidoyou> ...It looks like we'll have to climb
<Celanyth> "How about we find out what fouled it first? No point in cleaning it if it gets fouled again."
<Sailor_Dragon> As a chill wind blows in your face, you feel sure that you have in fact found the famous Caves of Chaos, where many an adventurer has sought fame and left only his or her bones behind.
* Hidoyou motions towards the caves
* Celanyth takes off, slightly away from the rest, trying to scout out the area, and using cover whenever possible.
<Celanyth> roll 1d20+6 for spot check
* Musk-bot --> "Celanyth rolls 1d20+6 for spot check and gets 15."
<Sailor_Dragon> roll 1d20 for someone's hide check
* Musk-bot --> "Sailor_Dragon rolls 1d20 for someone's hide check and gets 11."
<Sailor_Dragon> As Celanyth comes round a clump of trees to the right of the cavern, he sees a cave entrance previously hidden from sight
* Celanyth motions to the group that he he sees something and hold to back.
<Sailor_Dragon> For a brief moment, he sees something moving in the dark cave entrance, but it is quickly gone
<Celanyth> to hold back*
* Celanyth slides through the shadows to the edge of the cave.
<Sailor_Dragon> It's about 5 1/2 feet high and 3 feet wide.   There is no light inside
<Sailor_Dragon> Celanyth slips inside
<Sailor_Dragon> Roll 1d20 for a search check
* Musk-bot --> "Sailor_Dragon rolls 1d20 for a search check and gets 5."

* Musk-bot --> "Sailor_Dragon rolls 1d6 and gets 5."
<Sailor_Dragon> There's a muffled cry, and Celanyth disappears
* Hidoyou draws his sword
* thorn` pulls out my quarterstaff and moves away from hidoyou
* Mitchigan does the same, albiet, with much imagined fanfare...
* Hidoyou advances forward
<Mitchigan> Hold!
* Hidoyou stops
* Chandor readies his mace
<Mitchigan> \Is it not unwise to venture into a cave with no source of light"
<Sailor_Dragon> roll 1d20 for Celanyth to climb back up
* Musk-bot --> "Sailor_Dragon rolls 1d20 for Celanyth to climb back up and gets 14."
<Sailor_Dragon> Celanyth appears back at the threshold of the cave, bleeding profusely from a nasty head wound
* thorn` summons a dancing light
* Chandor passes a couple of candles over.
<Mitchigan> Good lord Celanyth! What hapened to you!?
<Sailor_Dragon> "Fell into a concealed pit-trap."
<Mitchigan> Oh... Are you able to continue?
<thorn`> "you might as well come out of there and we'll bandage you up"
<thorn`> "head wounds can be nasty"
* Mitchigan nods...
<Mitchigan> Indeed... I have suffered many during my training, so I know how bad they can get.
* Chandor casts cure light wounds on Celanyth
<Chandor> roll 1d8+1
* Musk-bot --> "Chandor rolls 1d8+1 and gets 2."
<Sailor_Dragon> Celanyth look better and the wound stops bleeding
* Chandor apologises for not getting enough thrutch into the cure
* Hidoyou sheathes his sword
<thorn`> "Ah, magic is wonderful. Even when it's the gods showing off."
* Mitchigan puts away his greatsword with as much fanfare as he can imagine...
<Hidoyou> Shall we proceed, then?
<thorn`> "Do you think it's safe now, Celanyth?"
<Mitchigan> Yes, le us.
* Hidoyou sets his backpack down and rummages for a torch
<Hidoyou> roll 1d20+2 to find a large branch/stick
* Musk-bot --> "Hidoyou rolls 1d20+2 to find a large branch/stick and gets 12."
* Hidoyou looks around the area for a stick
<Sailor_Dragon> There are plenty nearbt
* Hidoyou takes a large one
* Hidoyou lights his torch and walks towards the cave entrance
* Hidoyou looks inside
<Hidoyou> roll 1d20
* Musk-bot --> "Hidoyou rolls 1d20 and gets 6."
* Mitchigan takes a peek inside the cave too...
<Sailor_Dragon> You see a pit, maybe 10 feet across, and a short passage leading away from it on the other side to a T junction
* Hidoyou walks forward, pressing the stick against the ground
<Sailor_Dragon> There's a guard post off to one side with a short figure sitting in it
<Sailor_Dragon> Hidoyou reaches the edge of the pit
* Hidoyou looks at the guard
<Sailor_Dragon> He's very still
<Sailor_Dragon> He looks about 3 or 4 feet tall, and scaly
* thorn` tiptoes backwards a bit
* Hidoyou hisses to Mitchigan, "take this!"
* Hidoyou hands him his light
* Hidoyou takes his bow out and knocks an arrow
* Hidoyou crouches down
* Hidoyou releases the arrow on the guard
<Hidoyou> roll 1d20+2
* Musk-bot --> "Hidoyou rolls 1d20+2 and gets 14."
<Sailor_Dragon> The arrow strikes the guard and sticks in firmly
* Hidoyou looks for a reaction from the guard
<Sailor_Dragon> There is none
* Hidoyou stands up and puts away his bow
<Hidoyou> It was already dead...
* Hidoyou takes the torch from Mitchigan and looks down into the pit
<thorn`> "good grief! Are you sure?"
<Sailor_Dragon> The pit is around ten feet deep and littered with dry and broken bones
* Hidoyou hands the torch back to Mitchigan
<Hidoyou> I'm going to climb over
<Hidoyou> roll 1d20+7 to climb down
* Musk-bot --> "Hidoyou rolls 1d20+7 to climb down and gets 16."
<Mitchigan> For all we know... it could be an undead warrior waiting to ambush us, are you sure you want to take that risk?
<Sailor_Dragon> Hidoyou is at the bottom of the pit
* Hidoyou climbs up the other side
<Hidoyou> roll 1d20+7
* Musk-bot --> "Hidoyou rolls 1d20+7 and gets 15."
<Sailor_Dragon> Hidoyou scales the rough walls with comparative ease
* Hidoyou crouches down and glances around him, hands at his sword hilt
<Sailor_Dragon> The dead guard's body is crawling with some kind of maggots you now see, but the skin itself seems to have been lacquered to preserve its shape
<Sailor_Dragon> Down one passage, you can see a room filled with cobwebs
<Sailor_Dragon> In the other direction, the passage slopes upwards
* Hidoyou stands at the ready
* Hidoyou inclines his head slightly and motions to Mitchigan
* Mitchigan draws his word...
<Mitchigan> ^sword
* Chandor would like to investigate the lacquer
<Hidoyou> Come on...
* thorn` carefully comes closer to look at the maggots
* Chandor moves in to investigate when he can
* thorn` tosses hidoyou a small sack. "Could you put some maggots into there and throw it back, please?"
<Hidoyou> ...
<thorn`> I start down the pit myself while hidoyou can collect the specimen
