[14:32] <@Kotono> The next day begins in a like manner, passing down adn down. The depths are dark, save for occasional bands of thick, root like materials through the walls, like veins. In due time, you come to old, chipped stone doors set to the end of the path. They're shut tight, made of what looks to be granite or a similar stone.

01[14:35] <Knight> Growing increasing frantic every passing moment, Knight dismounts Bell and advances on the door. Her sword glows dimly in the darkness, illuminating the obstacle before her.
06[14:35] * Kamvakua has seemed to be fooling around with various ways of holding his pike and the new shield he bought as they walked, trying to get a feel for it possibly, though he put it away as they arrived at the doors, glancing over Knight. "Are you okay, Knight?"

[14:40] <@Kotono> Click! With some deft fingerwork and a patentend drow stare of DOOM, Mari pops the door open! Using the mechanism and level, the stone door sopen wide! Ahead of you is a carved patio, roof quite high. There's some sort of ancient, faded engravings in the floor, writ large enough for giants. Ahead is a door leading deeper in 80 feet away, with a dingy door to the side on the left, not far from the entrydoor.

01[14:40] <Knight> "I'm not taking any unecessary risks," replies Knight, watching Mari work. "And, uh, I don't think anyone will work like that..." she mutters, staring at the room ahead. "Do those writings say anything meaningful?"
06[14:42] * Mari walks on in, taking a look at the engravings as she passes by. Any language she knows?

[14:46] <Kamvakua> "It's in Terran, but...difficult to read.  It's mostly torn apart," Kamvakua admitted before repeating as best he could what he could read, in common.
06[14:46] * Mari just shrugs at the unintelligible writing and wanders over to the leftmost door. Open/closed, locked/unlocked?
[14:47] <@Kotono> The door is closed but not locked. It looks quite old, chipped and beaten and forgotten.
06[14:47] * Knight remounts Bell and quickly circuits about the room's upper regions; you've got to think in all directions around here!
[14:48] <@Kotono> The upper parts have some long, wicked stalagtites. Not much is up here beyond those, nothing immediately coming to the eye anyway.
06[14:48] * Mari pushes the door open, peering cautiously inside. You never know what might be lurking in these old ruins!
[14:49] <@Kotono> The door opens! Ahead is a sloping path down, going down 20 feet and ahead 30. At the end looks to be some sort of room, but Mari can't tell from this angle. You'd have to go down to see much more.
[14:50] <Kamvakua> "Wait up Mari," Kamvakua stood nearby, waiting for Knight to rejoin them.
[14:51] <Mari> "But I wanted to go explore the mysterious ruin containing a gem that kills people all by myself!"
[14:52] <Kamvakua> "This seems unwise and also posthumorously a lie," Kamvakua smirked lightly at Mari.
06[14:53] * Mari smiles back. "You're right, Kam. I'm glad there's someone here to tell me when I'm being an idiot."
01[14:54] <Knight> "I don't think that's what posthumous means," mumbles Knight, swopping back down to come alongside Mari. "Shall I go first?"
[14:54] <Mari> "Go right ahead."
[14:55] <Kamvakua> "It isn't?  I'm sure after getting killed, it would be," Kamvakua roughly replied.  "You can have front guard today, Knight." Kamvakua allowed to take the rear.
01[14:56] <Knight> Bell goes into a slight dive to get down the stairs, and rapidly regains his balance once he reaches the room proper. White illumination spills about the walls.
[14:56] <@Kotono> Knight takes the lead! The party descends down the path! At the bottom here is a crumbling room. A few broken pillars are about, but they're mostly rubble on the floor.  Straight ahead is a door, shut tight. In the floor a little to the side, an obviously out of place slat of old stone is there, rising slightly out. There's space here enough for Bell - the roof's about 15 feet up or so.
01[14:58] <Knight> Bell can't stop in midair, so he comes to rest on the rubble just next to the slat of stone. Knight peers down at it.
06[14:59] * Mari kneels down to examine the obvious bit of stone. What are we looking at here? Another lever? A broken one?
[15:00] <@Kotono> The edges around the slat of stone are loose. Looking over it, Mari finds that it's a fake tile in the floor. It's ab it heavy for Mari to move, but it looks like there's something below it - an opening.
[15:01] <Kamvakua> "See anything?" Kamvakua wondered.
[15:01] <Mari> "Hey Kam, get this rock out of the way for me?"
[15:01] <Kamvakua> "No problem," Kamvakua moved his hands and the tile wasn't there anymore.
[15:02] <@Kotono> The tile moves! Below is a 5ft wide tunnel, grooved handholes in one side. It plunges down into the darkness 20 feet. At the bottom is some sort of open space.
[15:03] <Kamvakua> "Is it this way, Knight?"
[15:04] <Mari> "Oh boy, climbing into a mysterious dark hole. Anyone else want to take the lead here? Anyone at all? I'm hoping someone else here can see in the dark and will say, 'Yes,' if it wasn't obvious."
01[15:06] <Knight> "Uh, I need light to see, unfortuantely. Wouldn't stealth be advisable?" whispers Knight, peering into the dimness.
[15:07] <@Kotono> It's dim! It's a hole! It's very much like what you'd expect something with these qualities to be.
[15:07] <Kamvakua> "Stealth would involve moving alone, how about we make an easier route and go with torchlight?"
[15:08] <Mari> "Nah, it's alright," Mari says, starting to descend the ladder of handholds and deliberately not tempting fate by saying something like What's the Worst that Could Happen.
[15:11] <Kamvakua> "I'm coming along, just in case," Kamvakua defeated any point of stealth perhaps, nor did he have special vision, but he could always provide a convenient wall.
[15:12] <@Kotono> Mari climbs down, Kamvakua squeezing downa fter her, able to follow if not by much. Down here is a dead end, but on the floor is some writing in a circle, around what looks to be a faded pattern.
[15:12] <Kamvakua> "Is there a route?" Kamvakua squints in the darkness.
[15:13] <Mari> "Some writing," Mari says, pausing to read it (if she can) and examine the pattern on the floor.
[15:14] <@Kotono> The pattern in the floor is of a gemstone. A few flecks of red remain on it. The writing reads something in Terran.
[15:15] <Mari> "Maybe you can read this, Kam. Let's get some light in here?" Mari lights a candle.
06[15:16] * Kamvakua kneels down close, reading over it.
[15:16] <@Kotono> Kamvakua can make out this in the faded Terran: 7"To take...Ruby...press down on the gemstone here with bravery."
[15:16] <Kamvakua> "To take the ruby, press down on the gemstone here with bravery...is this possibly the entrance...or even the actual device protecting the Ruby?"
06[15:17] * Knight remains in the upper chamber, watching anxiously through the hole.
[15:17] <Mari> "I dunno, but I'm going to step back a few feet before you go ahead with that, if you don't mind."
[15:23] <Kamvakua> "I do not...though before we go further, I should come clean on something.  I was asked, if we acquire the actual ruby to give it to Ogremoch.  It was also mentioned that if we did not desire the ruby ourselves it would avoid triggering the curse it bears."
06[15:25] * Mari shrugs. "So we can't have something we didn't come here for in the first place? Eh. It's just a rock anyway."
[15:26] <Kamvakua> "That was my thought exactly.  That said, I did not know how the rest of you felt about it, and did not want to mislead you.  You may want to get further back," He gestured up the pit. "I will attempt to open it."
[15:27] <Mari> "Sure thing." Mari climbs back up the ladder and quickly fills Knight in on the situation.
01[15:28] <Knight> "I can only assume the one we're tracking will be taking the path to the Ruby," she notes, glancing down the hole. "So we would be wise to continue following it."
06[15:28] * Kamvakua breathes in and pushes down fiercely on the gemstone.
[15:29] <@Kotono> Kamvakua presses the gemstone down! In a split second there is a clash of earth! Above, Knight and Mari can see the passage seal shut! The bottom half of it is now full of stone, blocked up smoothly! Below, Kamvaka can only see by the candlelight...and can hear a hissing sound, all around! The air begins to smell strangely sweet...
[15:31] <Mari> "Uh. That's not encouraging." Mari stomps on the new barrier of stone experimentally.
[15:31] <@Kotono> It's quite hard! Drow feet don't seem to bother it at all.
01[15:31] <Knight> "This cannot be good," notes Knight, peering into the hole. "Perhaps Adail can carve through it, but... Kamvakua! Can you hear us?"
[15:32] <Kamvakua> "There is some kind of gas releasing into the room," He glanced up, seeing the stone barrier, "Unfortunate," He took a moment looking around, following by sound to where the hissing was coming from.

[15:41] <@Kotono> The gas is...Kamvakua feels dizzy...but with a final surge, he erupts out of the ground! Fresh air! He feels better, even as his eyes slip shut, Knight and Mari seeing him make it ou! OOC: Kam, you're out cold for the moment. You two, you see dazed and out Goliath besides you.
01[15:43] <Knight> "Kamvakua? Mari, do you have any water?" asks Knight, jumping off Bell and inspecting the unconscious warrior.
[15:43] <Mari> "Oh, Kam! Good call on that getting the hell out of the way idea. Are you alright?" Well, he seems asleep, but maybe having five feet of sexy drow yammering at him will rouse him?
[15:45] <@Kotono> The noise ise nough to rouse Kamvakua into a half-coherent daze, recovering awareness.
[15:45] <Mari> "So I see you didn't crawl out with a giant ruby. Very disappointing!"
01[15:46] <Knight> "Was there such a thing down there?" asks Knight, glancing at Mari.
[15:47] <Kamvakua> "Mmm....Mari?" He blinked a bit awake, "Gas trap.  Deceitful it seems."  He should be more angry, but he just instead was drowsy.
[15:47] <Mari> "Nah. Just some writing that turned out to be a big ol' tease. I guess this was someone's trap. Want to head back up and check out the other door?" Mari says, ignoring Kam's near-stupor.
01[15:49] <Knight> "I suppose it could not be an easy thing to claim," admits Knight, nodding at Mari. "It all seemed a bit obvious, didn't it?"
[15:50] <Kamvakua> "It could easily have been a real test," He stumbled to his feet.  "I'm glad it wasn't worse."
[15:51] <Mari> "Well, Knight, you shoulda said so before Kam set off the gas trap," Mari says, making her way back up the incline to the main room to try out the other door.
[15:52] <@Kotono> You climb back up the incline to the main room with the faded giant inscriptions. The door ahead here is closed, as it was before. It can be checked or what have you if youc are to.
01[15:52] <Knight> "I- well, it didn't occur to me before," mumbles Knight, trailing after Mari and sizing up the larger portal.
[15:52] <Kamvakua> "Nor did it I.  I suppose that says we aren't very deceitful people."
[15:53] <Mari> "Too bad. It's good to be able to know when someone's conning you." Mari approaches the door and examines it.

06[15:58] * @Mari opens it, tentatively as if expecting another trap like before even though she didn't find anything untoward.
[16:00] <@Kotono> The door opens! Ahead is a many pillared chamber, most of them broken. Lying about in the path are several man and large sized things - what were once elementals, shattered apart. Broken arms, legs, bodies, a head fixed in a death gaze. Burns cover a pair, while others are still frozen solid.
06[16:01] * @Kamvakua looks around, lifting his walking stick/stabbing utensil in readiness as they move forward.
06[16:02] * @Mari treads carefully, getting the nasty suspicion that this is the lair of something that doesn't much like visitors. "Well...This isn't encouraging..." she says quietly.
01[16:02] <@Knight> "Are these.. they must be recent victims," murmurs Knight, cantering into the room and inspecting the bodies. "Powerful elemental magic... as I believe can be wielded by the slaad."
06[16:05] * @Kamvakua looks over to see if there's anything that can tell whether this was something that say...happened hours ago...or years ago.
[16:06] <@Kotono> Ahead, past this carnage, Mari finds a pair of doors. One leads straight ahead, with a door on the right leading to a little hall going and twisting away.

01[16:06] <@Knight> "Gem is near!" she announces, pointing forward. "He is.. weak," she adds, quickly moving onward. "Mari, it is dangerous ahead. We... yes, we have to be as cautious as possible."
[16:08] <@Mari> "Straight ahead, huh?" Mari says, walking forward with her weapons ready just in case, always glancing around for whatever might have caused this mess. "What do you mean, he's weak? What happens if someone else gets to him first, anyway?"

"Since he is warning me against his owner, I can only assume the one who holds him is dangerous indeed."
[16:10] <@Kamvakua> "This is recent.  Not more than a day or so.  Whoever or whatever did this could easily be not far ahead of us."
06[16:10] * @Kamvakua nods to Knight's words. "Then we should proceed swiftly and with caution."
[16:11] <@Mari> "Owner, huh? This sounds more and more fun..." Mari approaches the door straight ahead of them, opening it cautiously.
[16:11] <@Kotono> As you talk, the doors ahead fly open! A large Earth elemental is on point, two medium ones behind it. At it's flank is a single gargoyle! In booming Terran, 7"Surrender or face the wrath of Ogremoch!"
06[16:16] * @Kamvakua returns in Terrain, "We have permission from Ogremoch to be here."  Kamvakua presented the slab saying such.
[16:18] <@Kotono> On seeing the slab, 7"Turn away in the name of Ogremoch." The elemental commands, "What lies ahead is currently forbidden to all."
[16:19] <@Kamvakua> "Why is that so?  My companion has no choice but to travel this way.  And Ogremoch desired the Gruesome Ruby which is said to lie beyond."
06[16:19] * @Mari can only look from the elemental to Kam, back and forth, ready for trouble if hostilities break out.
[16:19] <@Kamvakua> His tone was inquisitve, seeking reason.
06[16:19] * @Knight shifts uneasily in her saddle. Interruptions, always interruptions!
[16:21] <@Kotono> The elemental glares at Kamvakua, 7"Ogremoch's orders here are absolute. You must turn away, for a dangerous force is loose eyond this point."
06[16:23] * @Kamvakua lifts his hands, palms forward in the universal gesture for no trouble wanted. "What is this dangerous force...?  We may deal with it for you."

[16:31] <@Kotono> The elemental peers closer at Kamvakua, silent for several moments. "Serve Ogremoch by advancing ahead. An ogre mage and a slaad have both been seen, dealing great death and harm."
[16:32] <@Kamvakua> "They are who my companion seeks.  It is likely that their deaths will follow our meeting.  Or our own.  Will you clear aside?"
01[16:32] <@Knight> "It must be him!" murmurs Knight, glancing at Mari with some worry. "Is there anything down there we can use to our advantage?"
[16:33] <@Kotono> The four stand aside, the path ahead open.
[16:34] <@Kamvakua> "Let's go.  We know that there's a mage and a slaad.  If we are lucky, we can catch them before they are rested."
06[16:34] * @Mari walks on past, keeping an eye on the goons in case they try anything.
01[16:36] <@Knight> "They are one and the same being," replies Knight, shaking her head. "The slaad disguised himself as an ogre magi for a time, or so Gem told me. Gem... Gem... I wonder why he retains my brother..."
[16:37] <@Kamvakua> "What is a slaad?  Does it die if it is cut or stabbed?"  He wondered at the warrior's caution, not used to her being a worried of such.
[16:37] <@Kotono> You advance on! Past them is a narrow hall, leading to a broken room. Here glass litters the floor, several broken pillars. More shattered elementals are ahead, a door straight ahead and a passage to the side on each wall, right at the midway point 20 feet ahead.
[16:38] <@Mari> "I dunno, Knight," Mari says, moving on. "They're nasty frog people, Kam. cut 'em enough and they die like everything else, though. I know from experience!"
01[16:38] <@Knight> "No two slaad are alike. They are all of different colourings, and each colour possesses abilities unique to itself... somewhat like dragons, in that respect."
01[16:39] <@Knight> Knight's voice is hoarse, and she reaches dazedly for her waterskin. "This.. I, I cannot think straight."
[16:39] <@Mari> Glass, huh? where did it come from? Mari idly glances up. "Knight, which direction are we looking at here. Still straight on ahead?"
[16:41] <@Kotono> ABove is roof, nothing unusual.  There are broken pillars around the broken glass.
[16:41] <@Kamvakua> "We face something dangerous," Kamvakua grimly smiled.  "In each a test, let us hope to catch it unawares."
01[16:42] <@Knight> "Straight ahead," replies Knight, pointing ahead with her lance. "We should not rely on hope when we can rely on skill," she adds, glancing at Mari.
06[16:42] * @Mari strides forward. "Well, I'd say we go get this over with. We can poke around later if we're all still alive, but since the last time we did that saw us fall into a trap, I'd say it's not high priority."
01[16:46] <@Knight> "Yes, yes, you're right. Mari, how do you feel about scouting in front?" asks Knight, somewhat hesitant.
[16:49] <@Mari> "Run off by myself when there's a slaad around who we know's killed a whole mess of elementals? Why sure! Should be fun. I don't see any problems cropping up from this plan at all." Mari sighs. "I...guess it'd be good to know what we're dealing with before jumping into things. And it's not like Kam could sneak up on anyone..."
[16:50] <@Kamvakua> "I am nothing if not silent," He deadpanned.  "I...do not like this.  If you go ahead, we should not be too far behind.  No more than a hundred or two hundred feet, so we could run and help if you needed to shout."
01[16:52] <@Knight> Knight's composure breaks in an instant. "No, Gem! Gem, I'm coming!" she calls, spurring Bell on and rushing in front of her companions!
[16:53] <@Mari> "Sure thing. You guys come running when you hear my dying screms, alright? I'm sure I'll appreciate that, wherever I am by that point. I--wait, what? Aw, shit." Mari takes off after Knight!

[16:57] <@Kotono> Knight rushes ahead, Mari and Kamvakua hurrying along! The door ahead leads to a downward slope, going down 50 feet and ahead 50. A perfect angle, down and down! Ahead of you lies a chamber. A chamber of candles, broken all over. Candlebras are shattered, alongside gargoyle corpses and a few xorn. [16:59] <@Kotono> Around the being, a faint, gemstone-like radiance surrounds him. It's cut and faceted, wavering in and out of vision. "Boooring!" Droning that out, there is a crunch! The elemental's head is shattered, body tossed aside and lobbed up! With it's other hand it's club swings, connecting! The broken elemental goes flying, landing in front of the party 100 feet away! "Triple digits for sure! Now then...oh, more?"

01[17:01] <@Knight> "Gem, I... you," murmurs Knight, suddenly reigning her steed in. "It's you who has Gem. I... I will be taking Gem back. It's up to you whether I do so by force or by trade," she announces. Bell slowly gains altitude, allowing Knight to gaze down at her quarry.

A long, ten foot tongue lashes out, licking the air, "I bet you taste CRUNCHY and SWEATY!" Snapping sharp teeth, "BORING! The Gruesome Ruby'll be more interesting than you!"
01[17:05] <@Knight> "Don't toy with me, Slaad," hisses Knight, narrowing her eyes. "I know your kind are inconstant in your whims, but don't underestimate me! I'm not the same as these elementals," she retorts.
