[18:19] <Kowork> ---
[18:21] <Kowork> As the city moves and events swirl around them, the Crimson Guard comes together on ther equest of Commander Oberuth. This isn't a particularly uncommon thing, but yet each brings news and tidings. Once everyone is seated, "Alicia? Demedais? Seira? How are matters progressing?"
[18:21] * Alicia has no time to sit down! "I need to speak with Lord Salman right away, sir," she says as soon as she enters, having come straight up from the prison.
[18:23] <Kowork> "Ah?" Commander Oberuth looks towards Alicia, "What's the matter? From your haste I'd say it's urgent?"
[18:23] * Demedais grunts and turns to Alicia, having just sat down himself. "What is it, Alicia?"
[18:26] <Alicia> "Long story short;" Alicia nods, "Beth sold her soul to a devil in exchange for my death. One tried to kill me in my sleep last night, and only a warning from Antenora saved my life," she wants to make sure everyone knows that the Erinyes actually can be dependable, "I confronted my sister, and helped her realise the enormity of her folly, but only the intervention of a deity can void the contract."
[18:26] <Alicia> "Mystra has shown me that I must take my sister to the sentient crystal you told me about - Uatu - and it can take us to a place where she can atone."
[18:27] <Seira> "Why do you believe an evil, remorseless assassin that sold her soul to a devil to kill her own sister actually be able to atone?" Seira asks curiously, taking this in.
[18:28] <Kowork> "Ah, right," Oberuth listens to all that, "Very well, go on. Come back here once you finish talking to him."
[18:28] <Demedais> "That actually leads into two things I wished to state, so it would be beneficial to say them now. The temple over Uatu's home has made us members of an order they have made to keep Uatu's existence secret, on the order of Helm." Demedais says quickly, to catch Alicia before she leaves.
[18:30] <Alicia> "She didn't know what she was getting into. If you'd seen her earlier, you wouldn't doubt it," Alicia returns to Seira levelly. "On that note, though, if you haven't prepared your spells for the day already, I'd be very grateful if you could prepare a few castings of Phantom Steed - more devils are likely to come after me in greater force, especially if they think Beth may atone. The quicker we go the better."
[18:30] <Alicia> At Demedais' words she pauses, "In that case, it might be best if one of you came with me, since the monks will have no reason to trust me."
[18:31] <Seira> "Sure, I'll provide the ride," Seira agrees with a shrug. "And I'm not doubting her willingness to escape literally hellish, eternal torture so much as some god taking pity on her after her life's achievements, but you would know her best."
[18:32] <Demedais> "There is another reason for you to wait, Alicia, if only for a little bit: my second bit of news." Demedais says, turning to Oberuth again. "I had another vision. This one, of Malmuth in flames... and Irenes and an elf walking away from it. It caused actual physical pain; I cannot believe it to be anything other than urgent. Alicia must tend to the current situation she has; but we may need to use Uatu to reach Malmuth. Before I go, however, I believe it
[18:32] <Demedais> would be wise to notify the Malmuthian government we desire to enter, and of the situation. Seira, you know of any magic that is capable of doing that?"
[18:32] <Alicia> "Mystra has shown me this much. She would not have done so for no reason," Alicia replies. "Anyway, by your leave, I will seek out Lord Salman." She bows once before departing.
[18:33] * Alicia stops at Demedais' words! Again!
[18:33] <Seira> "Some," Seira responds to Demedais, asking him casually, "Could you describe the elf in more detail?"
[18:34] <Kotono> At this, Hellmen does speak up. "What?" He asks as he listens to Demedais, "At this rate, I believe it may be prudent to simply send for Lord Salman instead of going to him." He rises, going outside and talking to a guard briefly.
[18:35] * Alicia settles down at that. So much for getting this dealt with swiftly and discreetly. Hopefully whichever devils are planning to try their luck against her next can wait five minutes.
[18:36] <Demedais> "He looked dead, though I could tell he was alive; he wore a circlet with a black gem, and moved... remorselessly. That's the only word I can think of for it." Demedais paused for a second, before describing the face as well as he could from the vision. "Do you think you would know him, Alicia? I'd think the odds of you knowing one specific elf are slim."
[18:37] <Seira> "Nope," Seira responds without hesitation. "But every bit of information helps. So, you want to warn Malmuth ahead of time? Or just appear in their midst without so much as a word?"
[18:37] <Alicia> "I knew two back in Kelara at my home temple, and I met a few in Pallanth," Alicia replies. "The only one I know of likely to be in company with Irenes was a woman, though."
[18:38] <Demedais> "We have to warn them ahead of time. I have a vow forbidding me from going in without notifying them, I'm afraid. After my last stunt, they wanted some security." Demedais says, rubbing his head in embarrassment. "Thus the magic to notify them of our desire to arrive.
[18:39] <Seira> "Have your head priest pray for Sending," Seira tells Demedais without hesitation. "Or we could do it at Waukeen's temple, for... free, I guess. This is important enough to warrant such."
[18:41] * Seira begins her preparations while waiting for Lord Salman, in the meanwhile.
[18:42] <Kotono> At the urgent summons, an unusual thing happens. Lord Salman goes to the heroes instead of vice versa, going to sit. "What is the urgent news?" he asks.
[18:42] * Alicia relents in favour of Demedais. Sadly the fate of their neighbouring kingdom does take precedence over her being on some diabolic hitlist.
[18:45] * Demedais looks to Oberuth and then Lord Salman, standing for a salute, suddenly embarrassed again. "I'm sorry, I... the vision was... it came suddenly when I returned from talking with Engan. It was of two citadels; one built on top of the other. The top one was Malmuth, I believe. I saw Irenes and an unknown elf walking away from it, and the citadel in flames. I believe, from this, that Irenes intends to strike at Malmuth, Lord Salman."
[18:46] <Seira> "The gnomish ruins below their capital, obviously," Seira mentions, keeping her eyes closed as she meditates. "We believe word should be sent to Sir Claris at once so that they would be expecting us."
[18:47] <Kotono> "I see." Lord Salman nods gravely at those words, "Such events are not to be ignored then, even in the bustle of the recent times. What action do you propose we take, then?"
[18:48] <Kotono> OOC - Strike. I'm not too bright.
[18:48] <Kotono> "I see," Lord Salman nods gravely to those words, "How will you send word to Claris? Magic, I presume?"
[18:49] <Seira> "The spell of Sending, which several of the higher priests here can manage," Seira responds. "As travel would take us a day, they could pray for it tomorrow at the latest and still get the message through before we appear in Malmuth."
[18:50] <Demedais> "We plan to contact him through the high priest of the temple of Helm, or of the high priest of the temple of Waukeen if for some reason the High Priest cannot." Demedais says. "From there, we travel to Uatu, and will use him to gate to Malmuth."
[18:50] <Kotono> "Very well," Lord Salman nods once, after a moment of meditation. "The Guard has proven it's skill and blessings many times over, we shall defer to your judgment."
[18:50] <Demedais> "That is, Seira and I will. Alicia..." Demedais nods to her, cedeing the floor.
[18:51] <Seira> "I live to serve," Seira likewise agrees.
[18:53] <Alicia> "I need to visit Uatu for a different reason, my Lord, as I'm afraid I would be a liability on such a mission," Alicia stands up. "I apologise for appearing so capricious, but I must reinstate my request for clemency for Beth Reynes, and further, I must humbly beg of you to release her into my care without delay." "The reason for this, is that Beth has sold her soul to a devil in exchange for my death -"
[18:53] <Alicia> "the first of many assassins attacked me last night, and more are certain to follow. After praying to Mystra for guidance, it has been indicated that I must take my sister to the being known as Uatu, who will deliver us to a place where her sins may be laid to rest. Until this is done, devils will continue attempting to enforce the contract."
[18:56] <Kotono> Lord Salman's eyes narrow, a moment where his lordly, regal exterior clashes with something dark. "She has consorted with fiends?" he asks plainly, ".... ....once again...so be it," he saks, voice becoming controlled once more. "If more are to come, then take her and go."
[18:58] <Alicia> "It was a rash decision made without understanding of the consequences - which have now been explained to her in great detail," Alicia replies, wincing. "That said, questions must be asked as to how a devil was able to infiltrate the prison in order to propose such a bargain."
[18:59] <Kotono> "Indeed," Lord Salman seconds that, "Also, Alicia, if you succeed...then what? What will you do with Beth Renyes?"
[18:59] <Seira> "Well, we don't really use magic much to shield our prisons from scrying or dimensional travel," Seira volunteers. "It just costs too much."
[19:01] <Alicia> "Simple supervision of the cells would at least let the guards know if an intruder teleports in," Alicia points out, before squaring her shoulders and facing Salman. "I do not believe Beth will be a true danger, any longer, knowing what she now knows about the afterlife that awaits if she continues on her old path. I will do what I can to help her adjust."
[19:03] <Kotono> Lord Salman listens before a terse nod is given. "Very well. We can discuss this matter on your return, then," he relents after some pause. "Haste is called for, not dalliance in light of these events. Go."
[19:03] * Alicia nods and departs, going to secure Beth's release.
[19:05] <Kotono> Once Alicia is gone, "Good luck to the all of you, then," Oberuth speaks up, "Be well on the trip ahead."
[19:05] <Seira> Seira wants to chime in with 'invisibility', but stops herself in time. "Well, I'm done!" she announces. "Now all I need is to cast the spells themselves." Glancing at Demedais, she says, "This might take a bit, so if you could arrange the sending of the missives? Don't forget to ask for one delivered to King Ferdi himself in case Sir Claris isn't in the capital. The spell allows for a response, after all. And one could always be directed
[19:05] <Seira>  at us to let us know of any change in plans."
[19:06] <Demedais> "Alright." Demedais nods, looking to the Commander and Lord Salman. "We shall return as soon as we can confirm Irenes has been thwarted."
[19:07] <Seira> "Soon, that unibrow freak will draw his last breath!" Seira vows, fist clenched.
[19:08] <Kotono> While the party splits up to prepare in a hectic fashion, Demedais rushes to his temple. On returning and finding the high priest finishing a sermon, "Demedais?" he asks as he steps away, past a small group of worshippers.
[19:08] <Demedais> "High Priest, if I may talk to you in private?" Demedais says, one fist clenched.
[19:09] <Kotono> "Yes," He answers, the two going to his quarters without incident. While the temple is busy, this place at least is solace filled and quiet. "What do you need, Demedais?"
[19:10] <Demedais> "I have two requests. The first one is this. Can you cast the spell of Sending?" Demedais asks, to the point.
[19:10] <Kotono> "I can," he answers to that, a short nod. "Do you wish for it to be done, Demedais? Is this church business?"
[19:13] <Demedais> "This is... related to the Crimson Guard and to a vision Helm has sent me." Demedais says. "I need to send a message to one person, maybe two. The recipient is Claris Brightsun, the Lathander cleric of Malmuth."
[19:14] <Kotono> "Very well," The high priest considers a few moments, but then agrees. "What is the message?"
[19:15] <Demedais> "Irenes intends attack on capital city of Malmuth. Demedais and Seira request permission to enter with further details and to assist if possible." Demedais says succinctly, hoping to ease the burden on the high priest.
[19:17] <Kotono> "Very well." AFter another nod, "Oh Helm, hear your servant's words and carry them beyond the pale..." With that he prays, and after a few moments, "...I have gotten a reply, Demedais."
[19:18] <Demedais> "And it is?" Demedais asks calmly.
[19:19] <Kotono> "Come at your own peril. The capital Malmuth is under martial law."
[19:20] <Demedais> "...what." Demedais says after a few moments. "I... martial law? That is all the reply said?"
[19:21] <Kotono> The high priest nods. "That's all the reply that was given."
[19:25] <Demedais> "...But why would it be... the waves!" Demedais says, closing his eyes in irritation. "They must be having problems handling that... This changes things, though I do not know how. Thank you, High Priest. The other matter of concern is that, in my room, on top of the dresser, I left a bag with some coin, to be used at your discretion." Demedais stands, eyes closed. "That... mmmph. Should have tried Ferdi, but I didn't anticipate..."
[19:26] <Kotono> "I thank you, my son," The high priest smiles momentarily, "Travel with Helm."
[19:27] <Demedais> "I will. Thank you, Father." Demedais says, before leaving to quickly try and catch Seira.
[19:28] <Kotono> Seira is found at her inn, quickly preparing amid the morning bustle of her dragonic business, people coming and putting good coin in.
[19:29] <Demedais> "Seira. We have a dilemma." Demedais says bluntly.
[19:31] <Seira> "Hmm?"
[19:32] * Demedais ensures no one is listening in, before saying quietly, "Claris' reply was short. 'Come at your own peril. The capital Malmuth is under martial law.'"
[19:33] <Seira> "That's a yes. It's all we need," Seira responds, though she frowns. "Let's appear inconspicious. It would not do to fly our colors in the open over there, in such a setting. We'll assess the situation first, before attempting to approach Claris."
[19:39] * Demedais opens his mouth, before closing it. "I'm not good at the inconspicuous stuff. Shield stays behind - or should I just stow it in my bag of holding?"
[19:41] <Seira> "Umm. We might need it, so let's go all out. But do keep it hidden, and that bag close at hand so no one steals it." She glares a bit at him. "I'll do the talking if we're in a situation where we might be forced to bend the truth a bit, so you won't break your vows to Helm. That works?"
[19:42] <Demedais> "How about I just don't talk, period, unless it proves neccessary." Demedais proposes as an alternative. "You can pretend I'm some hired thug or something."
[19:44] * Seira snorts. "Exciting. One thing, though. We're not going over to fight to the death. If we're up against insurmountable odds, I'm retreating, and you're going back with me."
[19:49] * Demedais nods. "I do not like it, but we have notified Claris Brightsun of the threat and thus done pretty much all that would normally be expected. We come to Malmuth for a chance to end it here."
[19:49] * Sierra_Devourer (~Melanchth@pool-71-191-17-108.washdc.east.verizon.net) Quit (-=SysReset 2.53=-)
[19:52] <Kotono> So the party gathers - Alicia, Seira, Demedais, Beth and Antenora. Beth is garbed simply, keeping quiet for now as the party prepares and takes off. The trip of magical steeds takes most of the day, dusk falling when you approach the Temple of Helm nestled in Pilltain. It is not hard to realise when you approach, for the sunset is masked by a thin, disorienting mist that drifts out from everywhere. However, it does not shroud your way, instea
[19:52] <Kotono> However, it does not shroud your way, instead parting to show the front gate of the temple.
[19:53] <Alicia> Since Seira and Demedais have been here before, and the monks have apparently invited them to join their order, Alicia is content to let those two take the lead. All she cares about is getting to see Uatu.
[19:54] <Kotono> At the front gate two guardians in full plate armor stand, with the eyed gauntlet of Helm on their breastplates. This eye is painted with white mists on the symbol, the two at attention and waiting as you approach.
[19:57] * Seira jumps off the horse as soon as they arrive, not caring about a conjured creation that would disappear soon enough. "Hello again," she greets the guardians.
[19:58] <Demedais> "We are the Crimson Guard. We have been honored by your invintation." Demedais says, also dismounting.
[19:58] <Kotono> They look on - their eyes are sharp, yet give Seira a strange shiver. "...Ah, Seira," One says, "The Crimson Gurad? You may enter," They speak, going to open the gate.
[20:00] * Alicia likewise dismounts, following the others in.
[20:00] * Seira enters! But not before casting Detect Magic and glancing at them, giving Alicia and Demedais the hint to look themselves at their hosts.
[20:01] <Kotono> Inside, you see a misty chapel ahead. Mists flow freely, a feeling of intensity and chill in the air. Coming and going from the mists, soldiers of Helm keep patrol. At the far end is an old man, ancient yet still wearing plate armor. He awaits, unbowed and un defeated by the long years.
[20:01] * Demedais nods slightly, looking around at the mist - and, at Seira's hint, the guards - before heading in.
[20:02] <Alicia> Seeing Seira rather obviously casting a divination spell, Alicia realises that some caution may be warranted - a devil could have beaten them here, after all - and looks forward for any sign of evil. Notably, she does not look at Beth.
[20:02] <Seira> "This really has grown into a space out of phase with our own dimension," Seira murmurs, looking around.
[20:03] <Demedais> "Indeed." Demedais nods, feeling it acutely as he raises one hand in greeting to the head priest of the temple.
[20:03] <Kotono> Beth looks around, then huddles into herself. She keeps her gaze downward.
[20:04] <Kotono> "Hail and welcome," the old man calls, "Seira and Demedais, you have returned and you bear others. What do you come to the Temple of the Mists for?"
[20:04] <Alicia> "It does feel like another world," Alicia admits, shivering a bit and lingering near her two charges. "Come on," she murmurs, urging them to follow her. Again she lets Demedais say his piece, first, before her own concerns can be raised.
[20:04] <Seira> "Helm sent us," Seira says curtly, before vacating the floor to Demedais.
[20:06] <Kotono> Antenora seems comfortable enough, however, walking along just behind Alicia. "Lovely ambience," she murmurs, "A vampire would be at home."
[20:07] <Demedais> "We come, for we have to approach Uatu, on two different missions." Demedais replies. "Is this permissible?"
[20:09] <Kotono> "You are chosen by the Watcher. If you are willing to risk the notice of Uatu, you may enter." He steps aside, and as he does, you see a stairway behind him. A narrow one of crystal, mists gently exhailing from it.
[20:11] * Alicia steps forward. "I have not been chosen by the Watcher," she states bluntly. Helm and Mystra are not exactly close, but she should be up front. "My errand comes through the guidance of Mystra. I hope you will still give your consent," she asks respectfully.
[20:11] <Demedais> "Thank you." Demedais says, a bit concerned by that last line, but not letting it show as he leads the way down the stairs.
[20:12] * Seira is pretty certain they will, and follows Demedais in the meanwhile.
[20:12] <Kotono> The old priest looks on at Alicia, "You may go," he allows.
[20:13] <Alicia> "You have my thanks," Alicia nods, before gesturing for Antenora and Beth to follow as she starts down the mist-wreathed crystalline staircase.
[20:17] <Kotono> The stairs are sharp - too sharp. They cut into your skin with each step, or feel like they should. But instead the path is without injury, walking. How long you walk is impossible to say, within seconds you have lost any concept of the time passed. Your senses open, bombarded. Bombarded with feelings, sensations.  Down and down you go, mists cloaking everything. Just out of it you can see figures and statues of flawless gleaming crystal, wat
[20:18] <Kotono> crystal, watching on. In pools and images a thousand things can be seen. Blessed places of rest, mechanical worlds that revolve on a trillion gears, dark pits without end. Yet even then, the stairways ahead lead on.
[20:18] * Seira gives Waukeen a mental nod of thanks as she proceeds towards Uatu.
[20:19] * Demedais continues onward, ever aware and vigilant under such blessing of Helm's.
[20:19] * Alicia breathes in deeply as she descends, her skin tingling with the intense feeling of magic surrounding her. Idly, she looks at the others, wondering if they feel the same.
[20:20] <Kotono> Antenora does not seem ruffled at all, looking about a few times, but keeping her pace. Beth looks cold, lost. But she's keeping quiet for now.
[20:21] <Kotono> Ahead the stairs come to an end. You walk down to a endless floor of crystal around an endless chasm. In the center of this chasm, around a thousand flawlessly transparent walls of thick crystal, a glowing shape of pure energy waits. Uatu floats there, each pulse from the strange being making the crystalline world around you throb.
[20:21] * Demedais catches Alicia's eye as he looks around and nods once, sharply, before looking back to the steps before him.
[20:21] * Seira seems fairly happy and elated.
[20:22] * Alicia hangs back a bit as her goal comes in sight. "I take it you two will be going first?" she asks Seira and Demedais.
[20:23] <Demedais> "It might be wise if us three approach together." Demedais says, looking towards Uatu calmly.
[20:24] <Alicia> "Why?" Alicia sounds confused. "I'm not going with you. We have a different destination," she gestures back to include the two behind her.
[20:24] <Seira> "In fact, it might be safer to make sure you're not stuck here, so why don't we wait on you?" Seira offers.
[20:25] <Seira> "Well. We're going to a well-defined location that exists in our world and is within Uatu's power. You... may not be. I wouldn't want to leave you behind in that case."
[20:25] <Demedais> "To make sure Uatu will open the way for you." Demedais nods, glancing at her. "We can go after, I am fairly confident. But let us make sure you can take your road first."
[20:25] <Seira> "Yeah, I think Demedais said it better."
[20:26] <Alicia> "Then you two can wait here," Alicia asks. "Else you are swept along with us. Come on, sister, Antenora," Alicia asks the assassin and devil to follow her as she walks towards the crystal from her vision, pace slow and measured.
[20:27] <Kotono> The two follow, Antenora looking up at the crystal. Beth follows behind, head bowed.
[20:28] * Demedais watches the crystal as well, patient.
[20:30] <Alicia> Recalling the words from the vision shown in her prayers, Alicia stands before the crystal and looks up. "My name is Alicia Reynes. I ask of you, please..." she pauses just a second, confirming the phrasing, "Take us to where I can lay her sins to rest."
[20:32] <Kotono> Uatu and the world around you shimmers. In a mere moment, Alicia, Antenora and Beth vanish! (#evil.)
[20:33] * Seira glances at Demedais. "I suppose it went well. Want to have the honors, or should I?"
[20:33] <Demedais> "You go ahead." Demedais says, looking toward the crystal still.
[20:34] * Seira approaches Uatu, and once Demedais had done the same, requests, "Please take us to Malmuth's capital, to the presence of Sir Claris if he is there, or an inconspicious alley in the city if he's not. It's very important that we get there, and Helm believes we are on the clock."
[20:36] <Kotono> Uatu shimmers again! This time, Seira and Demedais vanish! (More)
[20:40] <Kotono> They reappear at night. A nightfall that is dark, yet ahead of them is something that brings light. A vast city so large that it consumes the entire view, walls six times as tall as Seira, and yet buildings constructed tall enough to look over them. A vast, endless city lying ahead of them, a gate large enough to pass a dragon through ahead. A small swarm of blue garbed Malmuthian soldiers man it.
[20:42] * Seira uses up her still-running spell of magic detection, before anything else!
[20:42] <Kotono> OOc - Strike.
[20:43] <Kotono> They reappear at night. In an alley quiet and desolate, in the shadow of two tall, tall, tall buildings. Far ahead is the end of it, a quiet street seen. Grand buildings of brick and stone are at either side.
[20:43] * Seira uses up her still-running spell of magic detection, before anything else!
[20:46] <Seira> "Our first task is to find out the situation," Seira tells Demedais, making certain once more than they are not easily identifiable as members of the Guard. "Next is trying to get to the palace."
[20:47] * Demedais nods, looking himself over. After a moment, he nods slighty, apparently pretending to be in role already.
[20:49] * Seira sets out of the alley, intent on taking a better look of the main street before exiting in full.
[20:50] <Kotono> The main street is massive, wide as five in Balmuria. Grand buildings of stone soar all about, all at least a few stories high. They have small grassy yards in front of them, trees here and there. THe streets have several torches, keeping a good degree of light. Bands of ten soldiers walk the streets in regular sets, you can see a few coming and going. However, the skyline is dominated by one thing. (More)
[20:51] <Kotono> Over everything else, a grand, vast castle lies. An ancient castle, towering and awaiting over this vast city.
[20:53] * Seira spends a bit of time to get the hang of the soldiers' schedules and patrol routines, to estimate whether she'd be able to sneak past them or if she'd have to use the direct approach.
[20:54] * Demedais stays kneeling in the shadows, waiting for her signal patiently.
[20:55] * Seira sighs, but she can't very well abandon Demedais or use magic this early to force her way in. Straightening up, she gestures for Demedais to follow as she leaves the alley as if she belongs here, flagging down a Malmuthian patrol.
[20:56] * Demedais nods, following swiftly.
[20:59] <Kotono> A group of ten approaches the two, the leader a sallow faced man with a critical look. "What is it? Why are you out past curfew?"
[21:00] <Seira> "I regret that we had to break curfew," Seira tells him sincerely. "However, we are here on urgent business for Sir Claris. He gave us his permission to move around freely, while warning us of the situation."
[21:00] <Kotono> OOC - Bluff check here, I think.
[21:01] <Seira> OOC: Dude, it's all truth
[21:04] <Kotono> OOC - Yes, but you're trying to convince them of it. How often do they hear random people off the street some VIP has given them special orders? Getting them to believe is the trick.
[21:05] <Seira> OOC: Then 19, like I said, and I still don't get why diplomacy can't convince random people
[21:05] <Demedais> OOC: Aid another, take 10 for 14, I believe, if it runs of CHA.
[21:05] <Seira> OOC: It does, so we have 21
[21:06] <Kotono> The guard listens briefly, "We'll take you to the sectional station then," he says, "We'll move you along and get Sir Claris."
[21:07] <Seira> "Thank you very much," Seira responds, bowing. "There is much yet we have to discuss with Sir Claris about this mission. It is, however, urgent -- enough to break curfew."
[21:08] * Demedais bows as well, keeping silent.
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake

Corwin

[13:58] <Kotono> The trip to the sectional station leads Seira and Demedais a good ways. Past vast streets cloaked in the shadow of tall stone buildings, past grand shops, throughoufares, a square larger than the hill in Balmuria, a palatial estate and more. The sectional building is better called a medium sized fortress inserted into the cityscape, You enter in, taken to a comfortable enough room on the third floor. It looks like a sitting room, deep chairs
[13:59] <Kotono> It looks like a sitting room, deep chairs of silk around. "The Colonel of the Watch for this sectional command will pass on your words." the guard escorting you instructs.
[14:00] * Demedais nods slightly to the man, preferring to stand instead.
[14:09] * Seira takes a seat, herself, the very picture of serenity.
[14:11] <Kotono> About a half hour passes. No sign of anyone yet, just waiting...
[14:12] * Seira tries to find a guard and instill in him a sense of greater urgency.
[14:13] <Kotono> There are a foursome of guards just outside of the waiting rooms. Good ones, with well honed swords and well shined breastplates. "Sir Claris or a representative will be along when they can," he answers bluntly, "With the current situation, you could be waiting all night."
[14:14] * Demedais looks slightly worried, but relaxes a bit at the words of the guards, watching Seira to see what she will do next.
[14:17] <Seira> "Let me attempt to rephrase," Seira tells him just as bluntly. "A vision of divine origin summoned us to the castle with great haste. Sir Claris himself is both aware of and has approved our passage. We are to coordinate with him if at all possible, or to proceed on our own if not." Seira looks mildly apologetic, then, if still quite firm. "I cannot, in good faith, say further to someone below the rank of your colonel. Therefore, either a
[14:17] <Seira> llow us to meet with someone of sufficient rank, or grant us passage onwards. We have shown you proper courtesy, waited half an hour despite the urgency of the matter involved, and been exemplary prisoners. However, a mission regarding national security cannot be put on hold for much longer."
[14:18] <Kotono> "Ma'am," The guard's voice becomes steel, "My orders do not permit that. Word has been sent, you are to remain here until such a time when confirmation comes back."
[14:18] <Seira> "When will such time come?"
[14:19] <Kotono> "I don't know," The guard answers back. "Do I look like His Majesty?"
[14:21] * Seira rubs at her temples. "Listen. How often do you think one gets divine forewarning of an attempt on King Ferdi's life? Be honest." She sighs. "Ah, hell. Operational security is shot to hell, now, but either we get there in time to warn him, or we sit here waiting for a bureaucrat as assassins creep ever-closer. Do you at least understand why the details cannot be sent over the open channels? The need for us to report in person to some
[14:22] <Seira> to someone of rank?"
[14:23] <Kotono> OOC - Diplo check.
[14:24] <Seira> OOC: I'll take 10 for 27 since I think my case speaks for itself and I ask for very little (ie I think bonuses push it above 30)
[14:24] <Demedais> OOC: Take 10, aid another, for 26?
[14:25] <Kotono> THe guard looks at Seira with a leery eye, but turns to one of the guard and issues a curt few words, "Go see how long it'll be," he instructs. Then to Seira, "Go ahead and sit back down. He'll be back in a few minutes. Nothing to do into that comes back."
[14:25] <Demedais> OOC: If you want to deny this since I'm simply acting as a presence, I could see it, but I communicate very well with facial expressions!
[14:25] <Kotono> OOC: It's fine either way in this case.
[14:25] * Seira nods curtly. "I will wait for a response, naturally. Stirring up conflict amongst allies is counter-productive."
[14:26] * Demedais nods to the guard in thanks, and then gestures for Seira to sit.
[14:26] <Kotono> About ten minutes pass. There's a knock on the door, the same guard looking in. "Sir Claris will be here as soon as he's able. It still may be a time."
[14:27] <Seira> "Could we be taken over to him, instead?" Seira asks. "I would not object to a guard. And, barring that, any highly-placed officer would do, in this crisis."
[14:29] <Kotono> "No." The guard's expression changes, "Sir Claris sent very specific orders. Sir Seira and Sir Demedais in particular are NOT to be allowed to wander the city under any circumstances." After a pause, "The orders had a personal comment as well. That it's for your own safety."
[14:30] <Seira> "Please wait, so you could deliver a written missive to him," Seira requests, before writing a short note and sealing it with her own personal seal. "Can this be handed over to him with all haste?"
[14:30] <Kotono> "If you wish," The missive is taken, the door closed once more.
[14:31] * Demedais nods once, with an eyebrow raised to Seira.
[14:34] <Seira> "Since it took ten minutes to get word over and back, we shall wait twice that time before returning home," Seira tells Demedais.
[14:35] * Demedais frowns at this a bit, and then does a little wavy thing with his hands before knocking on his head twice, then gesturing outside.
[14:36] * Seira twitches.
[14:37] <Kotono> Twenty minutes pass. Night wears on, but at last the door opens. Claris Brightsun enters, armor worn and stained. He only wears sparse robes amid plate mail, his mace hanging at his side. His expression is harsh, but he enters the room alone. In his hand is Seira's missive, half crumpled.
[14:37] * Seira stands up. "Are you experiencing a coup?" she asks without preamble.
[14:38] * Demedais splutters and eyes Seira critically.
[14:39] <Kotono> "No." Claris goes to sit tiredly, sinking into the chair. "Sit down and be silent." HIs voice is quick, overpowering. "I can say little, but there is no danger of a coup now. Before you ask, yes, HIs Majesty lives and is unharmed."
[14:40] <Seira> "I expected as much," Seira responds, letting him speak on.
[14:40] <Demedais> "That is a relief." Demedais says simply, sitting.
[14:43] <Kotono> "This city is under martial law. Were I not extrodinary distracted when your sending came, I would have told you not to come." Claris forges on harshly, "I'm mainly thankful that you didn't spark a fight with a guard unit considering..." Claris cuts himself off there, however. "To the point, your vision is not material now."
[14:44] <Seira> "We know well enough to avoid combat with our friends," Seira tells him with a shrug. "And if nothing else, we have valuable information. Would you still send us away without listening?"
[14:45] <Kotono> "You're here, so go on," Claris nods slightly.
[14:46] * Seira nods. "Before that, how are you certain that the vision would not come to pass? Demedais claims it to be the most powerful, urgent vision he had ever receieved."
[14:47] <Kotono> OOC - Go ahead and make a diplo check here, I think.
[14:48] <Seira> roll 1d20+17 sure
[14:48] * Kotono sets mode: +v Rei-chan
[14:48] <Seira> roll 1d20+17
[14:48] <Rei-chan> 6,0Seira rolled :6,0 1d20+17 --> 6,0[ 1d20=3 ]4,0{20}
[14:49] <Demedais> "What she says is true. That vision was... dominating. It is the first I have ever experience that has caused direct pain to me, and the image was..." Demedais shakes his head.
[14:49] <Demedais> roll 1d20+16 uh... let me try, Seira the Abrasive.
[14:49] <Rei-chan> 6,0Demedais rolled :6,0 1d20+16 1,0uh... let me try, Seira the Abrasive. --> 6,0[ 1d20=11 ]4,0{27}
[14:53] <Kotono> Sourly, Claris looks to Demedais. "...You can rest easy. The vision is moot now."
[14:54] <Seira> "That could be only for two reasons: Irenes is taken out, or the ruins have been destroyed," Seira states flatly.
[14:54] <Demedais> "..." Demedais listens, concerned.
[14:55] <Kotono> "No..." Claris shakes his head, "Your vision was looking the wrong way."
[14:56] * Seira glances at Demedais in surprise. "What did you misinterpret?"
[14:56] <Demedais> "I don't know." Demedais says, mind rehashing the vision again. "I believed the intent to be clear enough."
[14:57] <Kotono> "No." Claris shakes his head once more, "It was not a vision of the future, but of recently passed events." At those words, Claris rises. "His Majesty was not caught unawares."
[14:58] * Seira scowls. "Then those bastards escaped."
[15:00] * Demedais closes his eyes in frustration. "I see, now. I..."
[15:00] <Demedais> roll 1d20+9 ohbloodyhell
[15:00] <Rei-chan> 6,0Demedais rolled :6,0 1d20+9 1,0ohbloodyhell --> 6,0[ 1d20=2 ]4,0{11}

[15:01] <Rei-chan> 6,0Seira rolled :6,0 1d20+2 1,0haha --> 6,0[ 1d20=1 ]4,0{3}
[15:02] <Kotono> At those words, there is an intense pounding on the door. It lasts a few seconds, before the door is thrown open! Soldiers gush in like a dam has been broken, weapons at the ready! At least a dozen, gushing in! "Claris Brightsun!" A voice commands, a strident, powerful voice. "You and your guests are hereby placed under arrest."
[15:03] * Seira can't help it, she laughs. "Are you sure about that coup thing, Claris?" she asks, withdrawing a scroll she had close by all this time.
[15:03] <Kotono> Claris turns in surprise, "W-What?" He says in alarm, a scowl on his face. "What is the meaning of this!"
[15:04] <Kotono> The man who spoke, a burly, squinty eyed captain, "His Majesty's orders. Come along now."
[15:05] * Demedais glances to Claris in alarm, before grimacing. "When we come to help, we get this sort of a reception? Aiya."
[15:05] <Seira> "Uh-huh. First, I would like to check that there's no exciting enchantment on all you nice guards. May I? Your answer determines mine!"
[15:06] <Kotono> "If she makes any unusual moves, subdue her - take her alive," The commanding officer orders, "I would advise against it. We can go along with this easy and without anyone getting hurt."
[15:07] <Seira> "Haha-- no. Do you know who I am? The words 'going quietly' are not in my vocabulary." Seira blinks and turns towards Demedais. "By saying them, did I just contradict myself?"
[15:08] <Demedais> "...Yes, you did. And I'd like to note that they are concepts you have followed before, Seira. Lord Stargazer, remember?" Demedais says calmly.
[15:09] <Seira> "I threatened to set that arrogant man on fire and abused the guards," Seira tells him. "Did you remember how they screamed?" And she continues in Draconic. "We'll be teleporting away, want to come?"
[15:15] * Sierra_Mikain (~Melanchth@pool-71-191-17-108.washdc.east.verizon.net) has joined #dunes
[15:15] <Kotono> Claris is silent for a few long, extremely tense seconds. "No. ...I trust HIs Majesty. He will not betray..." Claris doesn't sound too sure of it, however, then, "Seira, your father is in Irenes' thrall. They fled from Malmuth in defeat three days ago, His Majesty having anticipated the politics of the situation. But...Lathander help me, I still trust His Majesty." HIs voice is torn, before he nods and steps forward."
[15:15] <Demedais> "They didn't scream, the men got angry at you and proceeded to stamp their feet until you said you'd go with them to talk." Demedais corrects her, shaking his head a bit. "Screaming does not describe it correctly."
[15:17] <Seira> "I expected as much," Seira tells Claris. "On both counts." Then, she turns to face the guards. "Listen up. This will not become a diplomatic incident. Let me pass, or I'll do it regardless. Your pride would rest safer the first way."
[15:20] * Sierra_Mikain is now known as Sierra_Devourer
[15:21] <Kotono> "I think not," The commanding offer grunts, "Subdue them!" OOC - I'mg oing to call initaitive here, I Think.
[15:21] <Seira> OOC: Sec
[15:21] <Demedais> "I think what this boils down to, gentlemen, is that we are perfectly willing to go and peacably talk to his Majesty, and that we have no ill will toward him. We do not wish a fight; we do not wish to be detained by politics. If our presence is not needed, we shall depart after this. Understood?" Demedais says with a deadly calm, before hearing the commanding officer's words. "Oh for the love of."
[15:23] <Seira> "Demedais, this is a coup in some form," Seira tells him quietly. "Going along with those men is foolishness. Remember your promise to follow my lead in such matters? I'm saying now's the time for us to go, before it reflects on the relations between our countries. Unless you have one hell of a compelling reason to stay, I'm taking us back."
[15:25] <Demedais> "It's already reflected on the relationships, though I've no doubt it'll be taken the wrong way. But of course, you take the lead. I do trust you. I just presume people are reasonable, decent beings 100% of the time. Foolish, I know, in retrospect." Demedais says, before looking to Claris. "Are you sure?"
[15:26] <Seira> "Here's the thing," Seira speaks, to no one in particular. "Fighting you reflects badly on us. Going with you without you letting me check you for signs of Domination -- the very thing we came here to prevent, sent by Helm's urgent vision -- is retarded. Therefore, we will be taking our leave nonviolently."
[15:26] <Seira> OOC: I'm ready for init!
[15:27] <Kotono> OOC: Go ahead.

[15:30] <Rei-chan> 6,0Seira rolled :6,0 1d20+11 --> 6,0[ 1d20=12 ]4,0{23}
[15:30] * Kotono changes topic to 'Seira>Guards=Demedais'
[15:31] <Kotono> OOC: Go Seira.
[15:32] <Demedais> roll 1d20+16 diplo check?
[15:32] <Rei-chan> 6,0Demedais rolled :6,0 1d20+16 1,0diplo check? --> 6,0[ 1d20=15 ]4,0{31}
[15:33] * Seira already has her scroll, and while she cannot craft such things herself, so far, the magic held within is certainly under her command. "We will not interefere with the internal affairs of Malmuth. If, however, our aid is required... well, Malmuth knows where to reach us." And then, clasping Demedais's shoulder, she glances at Claris. "Last chance, friend."
[15:34] <Kotono> Claris hesitates a long time, too long. But at last, "Tell His Majesty that I'm sorry," he says to the commander. "I...What I saw the past few days is too much. He is a great man, but not on a path I'm entirely comfortable with walking."
[15:36] <Demedais> "I swear by Helm and on my vows as a paladin that this was solely intended to assist the kingdom of Malmuth and King Ferdi in whatever way we could." Demedais says, shaking his head at the guards. "I request you report those words to him directly, as we cannot afford to be detained: our duty compels us elsewhere." And at Claris' words, he mirrors Seira's action with his shoulder. "Very well. Seira, if you will?"
[15:36] <Kotono> "I'm coming," Claris says a tlast to Seira, voice uncertain. "Lathander and His Majesty help me." With that, he turns towards Seira.
[15:38] * Seira snaps her fingers, intent on invoking the mighty conjurations magics of her teleportation scroll as she takes herself, Claris and Demedais towards her inn, the place featuring most prominently in her mind.
[15:38] <Seira> roll 1d100 planar adventure!
[15:38] <Kotono> Woosh! The sitting room vanishes, whisked away on the wings of magic! They appear outside Seira's in, the sounds of rowdy singing lead by a loud, captivating bard echoing.
[15:38] <Rei-chan> 6,0Seira rolled :6,0 1d100 1,0planar adventure! --> 6,0[ 1d100=98 ]4,0{98}
[15:39] <Seira> "Welcome," Seira tells Claris. "I've hired a bard in the meanwhile."
[15:43] <Kotono> Claris looks around quietly, "Now what?" he asks, sounding uncertain.
[15:43] <Demedais> "It is your choice what to do from here, friend Claris." Demedais says. "But I wish to hear of what happened. I... my vision was accurate, but in a different way, it sounds. If you wish refuge in Balmuria, I have no doubt it will be offered."
[15:44] <Seira> "We wait. If the unrest was temporary, we'll get word soon enough. If not--" Seira shrugs. "You did say you weren't comfortable with a lot, recently."
[15:45] <Kotono> "...Seira, I owe you an apology," Claris says after a pause, listening. "If for no other reason than your father was beneath my nose the entire time and I never knew. I only found out in the last few chaotic days.""
[15:46] <Seira> "It's his own damn fault for ending up as Unibrow's bitch," Seira responds angrily. "I'll never forget this, so once I've rescued him we're going to have a long talk."
[15:48] <Kotono> Claris nods thoughtfully to that, "Can I go somewhere where I can lie down for a time," he asks quietly.
[15:48] <Seira> "Sure thing. I keep a few rooms empty for friends dropping by," she responds, directing him inside.
[15:49] * Demedais blinks a few more times at Seira, before following the two inside.
[15:50] * Seira seeks out Donald upon entry.
[15:51] <Kotono> Donald can be found hauling out a drunk, cheerfully walking past the three as he tosses him to the street. After dusting his hands off, he does a doubletake. "Sir Claris?" he asks, "Seira?"
[15:52] <Seira> "Sir Claris needs some well-deserved rest and, perhaps, some food and drink. Not necessarily in this order." Pulling Donald aside, Seira adds in a quieter voice, "I know you've been hesitant after those two pulses of divine magic, so if anything could help you resolve your issues, it would be he, I figure."
[15:54] <Kotono> Donald very quickly nods, "Ah, Sir Claris. Come with me," he says, leading the cleric along. Claris does just that, taken away into the busy inn and past the noisy front section.
[15:55] <Seira> "He'll be okay in Donald's care," Seira tells Demedais, before pulling him closer. "Not a word about my father, to anyone. That's private."
[15:56] <Demedais> "Very well. Although may I say at this moment that calling anyone Irenes' bitch is a rather weird image." Demedais says with a straight face.
[15:57] <Seira> "He's an ELF! He shouldn't be falling to such cheap tricks!" Seira stomps her foot. "Never mind. He was always a great person, so I won't actually pass judgement until after we've tortured Irenes for the details before killing him messily. Let's go report to Lord Salman. He needs to learn of what happened right away."
[15:59] <Demedais> "Agreed. Let's go." Demedais nods, leading the way.
[16:01] <Kotono> Getting Lord Salman and Commander Oberuth at this late hour isn't too hard when you send the proper words. They all meet in the garrison as per normal, ready to listen to Seira and Demedais...
[16:02] <Demedais> "Captain Seira, could you explain the situation?" Demedais says, nodding to her slightly.
[16:04] <Seira> "To make a long story short, Sirs, Malmuth has undergone something resembling a coup," Seira reports wearily. "There is infighting, and as a matter of fact, Sir Claris Brightsun is presently under watch in my inn, having escaped custody. He was placed there under orders of King Ferdi, whom he claims has been acting strangely lately. Add to this the fact that effects similar to Domination in nature had been described, and Irenes was defini
[16:04] <Seira> tely involved...." She shrugs helplessly. "I believe we need to prepare our troops and strengthen our borders effective immediately, just in case. Despite our peaceful approach and departure, the Malmuthian soldiers threatened us and the capital itself is under martial law."
[16:08] <Kotono> "I see..." Lord Salman nods swiftly to that, "We shall end out the needed orders, then."
[16:09] <Kotono> Oberuth speaks after that, voice insistent, "What about Claris Brightsun? What has he said on th is matter?"
[16:09] <Seira> "I believe it vital that we be on our best behavior, despite this, and don't step out of line. If we provoke an attack, the elves would never side with us."
[16:11] * Seira sighs at Oberuth's question. "He seemed quite wary. His trust of King Ferdi has become shaken, and he looked like he had been in battle. He especially decreed King Ferdi's path, and where it was taking him."
[16:11] <Seira> *decried
[16:15] <Kotono> "Alright. Then we need to find out what we can from him. Do you think he'll talk?" Lord Salman inquires. "It does seem like some sort of coup or power fluxuation has occured."
[16:16] * adfgsdgadsdga (Chiyos@58.194.238.102) has joined #dunes
[16:16] * Demedais (Chiyos@58.194.238.102) Quit (NickServ (GHOST command used by adfgsdgadsdga))
[16:17] * adfgsdgadsdga is now known as Demedais
[16:19] <Seira> "He should, once he had rested," Seira affirms. "Also, he came with us of his own volition. I believe we should make him feel welcome, and not like he'd traded one oppressive country for another."
[16:20] * Seira considers, then adding, "And I believe word to Pallanth should be sent at the earliest convenience. We would likely have to wait until morning before relying on a priest to get our message through."
[16:21] <Kotono> "Yeah," Commander Oberuth nods, "Once he's settled a bit, make sure he meets Engan. That should help smooth things over," With a look to Demedais, "Agreed."
[16:25] * Kotono sets mode: +o Demedais
[16:27] <Demedais> "Ah. Very well, then." Demedais nods in agreement.
[16:29] <Kotono> The trip back to Seira'sin is without incident. A few hours pass, midnight come and gone. Over warm cups of cider and other strong refreshment to kill the time, Donald finally comes out of Claris' room. "He's been asleep for abit after praying," he reports, "He was very shaken."
[16:30] <Seira> "It's not pretty when your world crumbles around you," Seira agrees.
[16:31] <Demedais> "Hopefully, with the Gods closer, he found some answer that soothed him in some regard." Demedais says, shaking his head.
[16:32] * Sierra_Devourer is now known as Sierra_FamilyNabbed
[16:32] <Kotono> Donald shakes his head, "I didn't get a chance to talk to him much. I hope Lathander was listening..." Donald's voice is slightly unsure, "He said that he does not mind being woken once you arrive back, if you wish to talk."
[16:33] <Seira> "We can afford to give him a few more hours," Seira muses. "As long as he is not left alone for an assassin to sneak in. Irenes can also teleport, after all."
[16:33] <Seira> With a glance at Donald, she adds, "I suppose you could talk to him when he's more stable. Your answers are there, and it is merely a matter of patience."
[16:34] <Kotono> "I think I will," Donald agrees, going to sit. The inn's mostly wound down for the night down, quiet at last. "Just have to wait."
[16:35] <Demedais> "I hope he can give you some answers, Donald." Demedais nods, looking out the window.
[16:37] <Kotono> Sleep comes and rest, but dawnbreak ruins all of this. Claris wakes just before it, going through prayer and meditations. As the first rays of the dawn peer over the horizon..."Seira," he calls, dressed in his armor once more.
[16:38] <Seira> "Feeling better?" she asks him. "Rest and prayer do wonders."
[16:39] * Demedais nods slightly to the priest, not yet tired even after these endeavors, though planning on a nap soonish.
[16:40] <Kotono> "I am fine," Claris goes to sit, "The dawn always brings new hope."
[16:41] * Seira can't argue with this logic. "I hate to press, but anything you can tell us about the situation would be of help to us," Seira tells him apologetically. "We want to avoid a conflict at almost any cost, and it is hard doing this blind."
[16:45] <Kotono> Claris is quiet for a few, before he begins. "It turns out I only knew a little bit," he begins, "That King Ferdi has been playing several sides against each other. It started perhaps half a week ago. HIs Majesty came to me and told me we had to 'make a preemptive strike' against a troublemaker."
[16:47] <Kotono> "We met deep in the palace - and several others were there. Pallan of Turnsdale, Berlioz...the few that you know offhand," Claris barely stops to wait for the words to have a chance to be heard. "King Ferdi gave little explination, but relied on...I don't know what. It was like his words were guilded with raw force, raw charisma. He's always had an amazing presence, but this was unreal." (More)
[16:50] <Kotono> HE took us to a chamber I never knew existed, with a stair leading down. Down into ruins renovated, the sword of the gnomes in his hand. What came next...we pushed through a layer of defenses with magic and might and came on Irenes below, in a vast laboratory. Irenes screamed betrayal, and His Majesty commanded us to attack." [16:56] <Kotono> "It was harsh, but the battle turned in our favor. HIs Majesty rallied us, giving us a fearless surge. Seeing the day lost, Irenes cast a terrible spell of fire, before vanishing away with Saul." A pause for that, "After...after my head fully cleared, I had to tend to the wounded, including His Majesty. I asked him why." At this, Claris pauses even longer. "He said that Irenes had failed too many times. After all, he couldn't kill Seira, Deme
[16:56] <Kotono> After all, he couldn't kill Seira, Demedais, Alicia, or even Claris Brightsun." (More)
[16:58] <Kotono> "I remember staring at him...and he took my shoulder. He said that it was needed, that Irenes was a needed but dangerous and ultimately worthless tool. That to keep Irenes happy, he had to arrainge the attack and make him appear like a third party to us, while Irenes though His Majesty was still supporting him with a simple doublecross." (More)
[17:01] <Kotono> "He took something out of his pocket, a small blue gem. He said that this was what Irenes left behind, and why he was valuable and tolerable. That he had gotten the Resort from him and spellgems. That he apologized for the secrets, for the attack at the conference..." Claris's voice breaks, sounding pained. "That Malmuth is on the verge of a new dawn under his lead."
[17:01] <Kotono> (More)
[17:04] <Kotono> "He said that when I was ready, this spellgem would grant me power." Reaching into a pocket of his robes, Claris takes out a sapphire, glittering in the dawn light. "That he will offer gifts freely to Malmuth, as he restores the Empire to it's rightful place from neglect. But...My prayers. Those waves, they made me feel unsure. Uncertain even more. As clear as it felt when His Majesty spoke, doubt festered in my heart. Then...the martial law.
[17:04] <Kotono> Then...the martial law. Between the awakenings and escaped creatures from Irenes' lab, the capital city was in chaos. The last several days have been trying to get it under control." (More)
[17:07] <Kotono> "When you sent, I was in battle with one. Horrible timing," Claris observes quietly, "From there...Left to fester with my doubts every dawn..." Claris Brightsun spreads his hands. "As much as I still believe King Ferdi, that he is a great man beyond compare...The seed I feel every time I pray avers my restful spirit."
[17:10] <Seira> "Before all else, you need to know the reason for the waves you have mentioned," Seira tells Claris. "I was going to inform you of it, before we were so rudely interrupted. They emanated from the God-King's seal, which we breached with the deities' approval, bringing our realm and the divine closer together. I admit we didn't expect such a strong effect as a result, so we couldn't warn you or our other friends in advance."
[17:12] <Demedais> "...Well, won't he be pleased to hear that he was right." Demedais rubbed his knuckles, looking at Claris. "What you have been through... I thank the heavens I was called back to Balmuria by Helm when I was. And... yes. Those waves were our doing, and while the damage they have caused is no laughing matter... it is good that they have helped you, at least in part. Would this be a good time to take him to our other guest, Seira?"
[17:13] <Seira> "Not yet, Demedais," she responds. "There is still much we should share, before that."
[17:13] <Demedais> "Very well." Demedais nods.
[17:14] <Seira> "We know that some artifacts can overwhelm mortals holding them, especially if they use them for too long. I have experienced this first hand, and more than once. In the end, one unguarded moment is all it takes. It may well be that King Ferdi was just, but lost in a battle of wills to a timeless, sentient magical construct."
[17:16] <Kotono> Claris listens to the wrods back, "That is much to think on. But..." Claris considers, "If you find King Ferdi has been corrupted by one, will you try to free him if possible?"
[17:17] * Seira nods. "And for that reason, our first priority, should it come to a conflict, would be to remove the sword from King Ferdi's grasp, and reexamine the situation," Seira proposes, talking to Demedais. "That may well restore the balance without bloodshed." She redirects her attention towards Claris. "Aside from you, would you know of anyone else in King Ferdi's inner circle that is having doubt? Someone who is in desperate need of a re
[17:18] <Seira> need of a rescue?"
[17:19] <Demedais> "Understood." Demedais nods. "Your orb, perhaps, could assist with that?"
[17:19] * Seira winces. "Do you know what it's like to be stabbed in the face with an artifact?"
[17:21] <Demedais> "I could stand in its way." Demedais offers. "Just tell me when you're going to use it, next time. Okay?"
[17:23] <Seira> Seira snorts. "I doubt any of us truly want to find out, so let's keep it as a last resort, no pun intended. I still have other skills that would go a long way in that direction, and those engaging in melee can always try to disarm him. In any case, barring others we should rescue, I believe we must inform our elven friends of this matter with all due haste. I will take care of that part, while you make preparations for Sir Claris to meet
[17:23] <Seira>  your friend?"
[17:23] <Kotono> Claris listens further, before nodding once more. "No...Though...I wonder how much of the court I knew now?" There's a strong note of confusion and bitterness there, "All the others there were as captivated as I was. Even that damned bland bard."
[17:24] <Seira> "Do you mean this literally?" Seira asks with a frown, casting detect magic and glancing upon him. "Was this captivation unnatural?"
[17:24] <Demedais> "Notify the elves and Commander Oberuth of it, yes." Demedais nods.
[17:25] <Kotono> "No, I mean...I don't know. It was...just his raw force of will, of personality. It was like ...talking to a great man. I can't explain it."
[17:27] <Seira> "Then it's alright," she concludes, ending the spell. "You may rest here for as long as you'd like, and decide upon your path. We would certainly like you to stay with us and help us, especially as our goals with regards to King Ferdi coincide. However, we would not force you into it."
[17:28] <Kotono> "Thank you," Claris nods.
[17:32] <Kotono> The trip out of Seira's inn is a dawn breaking one. As you walk along in the early morning, "Who is this friend?" Claris asks, to the point.
[17:33] <Demedais> "Engan." Demedais says, slowing down and looking to Claris.
[17:45] <Kotono> "Engan? The Kensai?" Claris walks along with Demedais, "I recall he had...fallen out of favor."
[17:46] <Demedais> "He did. And then he fled out of Malmuth, with me acting as his guardian." Demedais says, returning back to his normal pace. "You probably remember the drama about me entering the country without permission?"
[17:47] <Kotono> "...ah." Claris smiles a little bit at that, "Is uppose that makes more sense now."
[17:49] <Demedais> "Yes. I was lucky a large amount of natural arrogance and Helm's guidance were enough to see him safely here." Demedais nods, almost at Engan's room.
[17:54] <Kotono> It's a plain room at the garrison, the door closed. Claris approaches, "May I? It's been a fairly long time since I've seen him."
[17:55] * Demedais gestures to Claris to go ahead.
[17:58] <Kotono> Claris enters. As he does, you hear Engan call, "Claris? Claris Brightsun?"
[18:00] * Demedais grins slightly and leans against the wall, content to let them talk for now.
[18:05] <Kotono> "Well, well," Engan can be heard, "Joining the party here, or just in a special visit?" Engan challenges back.
[18:05] <Kotono> "I...Don't know," Claris answers after a moment, then, "...Damn it. You were wrong, though. He is a great man, just..." There's a long pause by both after that.
[18:10] <Kotono> "Bah. Demedais, what's going on," Engan calls out after that stretche son too long.
[18:13] * Demedais enters at this point. "Well, what's going on right now is that I've been letting you two talk while catnapping a bit after first receiving a vision from Helm, then deciding to teleport to Malmuth to try and assist them against Irenes. Of course, we now learn you were right all along and that the attack on Claris, Seira and I was just a ruse, so Seira and I convinced Claris to come back with us. And now he's here, talking to you, and you just called m
[18:16] <Demedais> and you just called me in here to ask what's going on." Demedais says, with a slight grin.
[18:25] <Kotono> "Asshole," Engan laughs a bit, I was right now?"

[18:13] <Kotono> ---
[18:16] <Kotono> OOC: Sending the elves?
[18:18] <Seira> With a sense of urgency, Seira requests the Waukeen high priest to send a missive to Drake, where she officially requests his immediate presence on Lord Salman's behalf over a matter of national security. The word to their allies must go out before all else, before they could even begin planning, not to mention preparing.
[18:21] <Kotono> "What is the exact wording you want me to use?" He asks, as the two sit in his private quarters. "It's limited somewhat, so clarity and brevity matter."
[18:24] <Seira> "I'm aware of the spell," Seira responds, indeed having researched it as a means of contacting Saul, once upon a time. She repeats succinctly for his benefit, "Captain Seira of the United Baronies, on behalf of Lord Salman, officially requests Ambassador Drake's immediate counsel on a matter of national security."
[18:26] * Ebiris is now known as Alicia
[18:26] <Kotono> With a nod, "Waukeen, open the travel paths of the wind to my voice. Send this missive along the trails to he whom must hear it!" After a few moments, "He sends word that he will come within 24 hours," he answers after.
[18:28] <Seira> "Did you say urgently?" Seira asks the priest, tilting her head. "Maybe I should've put it in. Twice."
[18:35] <Kotono> "I did," he nods, "That was what he said back - that he'd be along within a day."
[18:39] <Seira> "Oh. Right. Elves." Seira curses. "Should've seen that coming, stupid me. Well, no matter." She frowns, and eyes him. "This is so confidential even I'm not supposed to know it, I figure, but I'd be very surprised if the friendly empire on our borders weren't gearing up for an attack. It might be wise to persuade any worshippers seeking to take a trip or embark on a business venture into Malmuth to reconsider... without making it sound tha
[18:39] <Seira> t way." She considers, adding then, "Of course, anyone who happened to visit it anyway and managed to overhear a few things? That would be most helpful."
[18:39] <Kotono> "I shall then," He nods thankfully, "I'll say the proper words in the proper places."
[18:40] <Seira> "Don't worry," Seira feels she has to say. "I'm pretty sure we can win. All I'm after is minimizing the damages."
[18:45] <Kotono> ---
[18:45] <Kotono> Claris is found in the room Seira graciously provided, deep in meditation. "..aaah. Thank you for the room," He begins, "It's as quiet as I would have hoped. But, what is it you need?"
[18:46] <Seira> "You have a very unique gem of magic. I am a mage following Waukeen." Seira shrugs. "It caught my interest, so once things calmed down somewhat, I decided to come and ask you about it."
[18:49] <Kotono> TAking it out, Claris holds the small blue sapphire. It glitters in the light, almost with it's own radiance. "This?"
[18:50] * Seira nods. "Yes. Want to see what it does?"
[19:03] <Kotono> "I would be grateful," he nods, handing it over.
[19:04] * Seira makes herself comfortable. Preparations for some spells take time, and this is one of them. She had done as much as she could in advance, so all that remains is to examine the gem thoroughly.
[19:19] <Seira> "Nice!" Seira says appreciatively. "What you have here is the priceless opportunity to immolate yourself once a day with to adverse effect."
[19:19] <Kotono> An eyebrow is raised at that, "Set myself on fire?"
[19:20] <Seira> "Yes!" Looking pleased, she hands the gem back, asking, "You realize why I'm so excited, now?"
[19:23] <Kotono> "Aaah...not particularly," Claris admits, "Fire has it's time and it's place, but hardly onesself."
[19:24] <Seira> Seira laughs. "You would be well-familiar with this spell, as I believe it is one Lathander grants you. Though I'm afraid it's only the chilly version, though that in itself might work better, as the choice is otherwise random, I understand."
[19:26] <Kotono> "Ah. Fire Shield?" Claris quickly perks up, "Yes, that is indeed a useful spell. This gem grants it, yes?"
[19:27] <Seira> "Once you've eaten it," Seira affirms. "I hear that's not for everyone, but I personally like the experience."
[19:32] <Kotono> "...let me think on it a time," Putting the gem back in, "Thank you, Seira."
[19:33] <Seira> "Sure thing," Seira agrees. "There is also an obscure, alternate option," she offers. "There are certain magical items that accept such gems as fuel."
[19:36] <Kotono> "I'll keep that in mind," Claris says, before going back tolie down. "Magic on eating them...eh?"
[19:38] <Seira> "Like a sorcerer," Seira affirms, and demonstrates with faerie fire, her all-time favorite spell.
[19:40] <Kotono> Claris watches with interest, "Fascinating. That..." He begins, "Thank you, I'll think it over, Seira."
[19:42] <Kotono> ---
[19:48] <Kotono> It only takes about two hours for Celebrimbor to arrive. He appears at Seira's inn, sitting at the bar amid a few human glances(Though not as many as he would have gotten a year before!), waiting for her.
[19:50] <Seira> Seira spots him there upon coming downstairs from Claris's room. "I hope I haven't made you wait too long," she apologizes, making her way towards him.
[19:53] <Kotono> "No." He waves it aside, sipping from a steaming mug as he waits. "If anything, I was afraid I was going to be too long. Ambrose was feeling particularly long winded today."
[19:55] <Seira> "I can't let this be overheard," Seira tells him quietly. Much as she'd like to banter or exchange stories of pompous elves, she needs to appraise Celebrimbor of the situation, first, and the sooner, the better. "Let's take it to my study?"
[20:00] <Kotono> Celebrimbor nods and follows. Once out of earshot of the tavern, "Yes, do hurry. It's been a rather busy few days in council. I think you know why."
[20:04] <Seira> "Are your intelligence-gathering capabilities better than--" Seira cuts herself off. "Oh, right. The pulses of the Divine. No, while important, they're not why I called upon you, Celebrimbor. That could've just been relayed, and was going to, soon enough." She sighs. "It now seems that King Ferdi was playing us for fools, and plotting to conquer us all along. I never would have expected him to use one of his closest aides to assassinate a
[20:04] <Seira> nother in all seriousness merely to place himself beyond doubt, but that was what the Irenes attack on Claris Brightsun, myself and Demedais had been. And he happens to know that we know, now. If that doesn't accelerate Malmuth's plans for the region, I'm not certain what would."
[20:06] <Kotono> "It's being handled well enough, but it's given us a few barrels of grist to chew on in Council. Idril's been nearly livid the entire time," A faint smile passes over the old elf's face, but he goes quiet as Seira spills. "...So it is war then?" he asks, grave.
[20:10] <Seira> "There is the faint chance that the resort is influencing King Ferdi, but I'm afraid I don't believe in this quite as much as I indicated to Claris. Some of the crucial background comes from him, as Demedais and I have rescued him from being arrested in Malmuth after King Ferdi turned on him. Nevertheless, I intend to try and get the resort away from him before resorting to any lethal response... however, it makes perfect sense to plan fo
[20:10] <Seira> r just such an eventuality." And as Claris had been mentioned, Seira fills Celebrimbor in on their little adventure in Malmuth, and what the priest had told them upon their return. "I doubt Malmuth would turn on Pallanth officially. However, it has many agents, and Irenes is now the truly rogue Malmuth had claimed he was all along. This, at least, affects you."
[20:15] <Kotono> "There's a lot to be saida bout this, but..." Celebrimor lets it settle in his mind instead, stroking his chin. "So he's sitting on what's left of Irenes' work, too? Does that include spellgems and the like?"
[20:17] <Seira> Seira nods curtly. "What's left of it. I don't expect their mages to be able to replicate it easily, and Irenes would have taken or destroyed all he could. Yet, some certainly remained behind. Is there any chance of you making progress on this issue from your end?"
[20:21] <Kotono> "Some, but nothing definitive yet. We're waiting on enough evidence to ensure it's completely safe or not before reporting. On this we want no chance of error. If there is any harm by the simpliest ones, it is on a level that cannot be measured, if done correctly. Unofficial still, but that's what I believe now."
[20:24] <Seira> "You should try an experiment and gather more data," Seira suggests with a troubled frown. "Caution has its place, but if we wait too long you might find Irenes in your midst running his own, perverse version of the rituals involved. And, on that matter...." She sighs. "Filetta is one of his experiments, isn't she? Yet unlike those he had cut off here, do you believe he might come back for her?"
[20:30] <Kotono> "...I don't know. If he does, he'll have a devil of a battle on his hands," Celebrimbor promises, "That I've made sure of. If he doesn't...mmm."
[20:33] <Seira> "If there are any changes at all in her situation, please contact me," Seira requests. "It's personal. Especially since the old man is confirmed to be involved. I suspected it for a while, now, but to actually have proof that his mind was so frail as to be taken in by the unibrow? That's a shock, a shock for real. Does it mean I'll go weak and frail in my head as I'm pushing two-hundred?" She blinks. "What's his age, actually? He never re
[20:33] <Seira> ally said, though I guess there wasn't much of an opportunity for it."
[20:35] <Kotono> "Three hundred or so?" Celebrimbor thinks after a bit, "He's still not all that old. But if Irenes has Saul, it means he's skilled enough at domination to subdue a powerful rival wizard. That's not lightly done, no matter what or no matter how much of a frail mind occured."
[20:37] <Seira> "I suspect that black bracelet thing Demedais described in his vision," Seira tells Celebrimbor. "If you have to fight him, just destroy everything he's wearing -- the more magical, the better. He could always make more once he's his old self, after all." Without missing a beat, Seira continues, "And don't be afraid to go all out against him. He wouldn't want you to hold back. And if the worst happens, now that I have a somewhat tenuous l
[20:37] <Seira> ine to Waukeen, something will work out!"
[20:40] <Kotono> "It will..." Celebrimbor ponders, long and hard. "My main concern is Irenes striking when we're weakest - during a war."
[20:41] <Seira> "If there is a war, what will Pallanth be willing to do for us?" Seira asks bluntly. "And how much of it would the kingdom do openly?"
[20:44] <Kotono> "Assuming Malmuth starts the war themselves?" Celebrimbor leans back, stroking his chin again. "Quiet aid - potions and recovery aid, loans and the like are easy to do. Unless His Majesty specifically ordered me not to, I would provide as such myself at worst. But...what you really mean is a more concrete aid?"
[20:47] <Seira> Seira nods. "If you would not move, even as a bluff, then I must request that you consider helping us fortify our position before any hostilities are made official. This speaks, first and foremost, of the resort guarded in the maze you have mentioned in your last missive. While an inappropriate loan from a neutral power during a war, if we happened to be holding on to it and officially refused to return it during the conflict...."
[20:55] <Kotono> "If you want to try and get it out of there, you're welcome to," Celebrimbor nods, "It's not an easy task; I wouldn't consider trying it alone, however."
[20:58] <Seira> "Would you be able to provide us help with other matters, such as transportation?" she asks. If the answer to this is positive, then she would certainly have time for an expedition into the elven protective complex for the ring resort. "We have been trying to work on this ourselves, but our project is in its nascent stages. We're nowhere near a final product like your rings."
[21:01] <Kotono> "In this case, I can and will," Celebrimbor nods decisively, "Whom will go is the only question, then."
[21:05] <Seira> "Then the hardest part is behind us," Seira says with a shrug. "And on a more personal matter, it seems I've successfully changed that future I discussed with you before. Waukeen told me that she has averted that unseemly end, which means I'm in no particular danger of growing evil, dimwitted or both."
<Steph> I might have made a terrible mistake
