<El-Cideon> "Shall we be on our way?" Kisantha says once everyone's taken whatever gear they want from the collection. "I strongly suggest any of you with lingering wounds see to them before we tackle the east wing."
<Eliaphas> That prompts Eliaphas to produce his wand of healing and go to town on both of his companions!
<Eliaphas> roll 3d8+3 Corben
* Hatbot --> "Eliaphas rolls 3d8+3 Corben and gets 13."12 [3d8=3, 3, 4]
<Eliaphas> roll 3d8+3 Madeline
* Hatbot --> "Eliaphas rolls 3d8+3 Madeline and gets 16."12 [3d8=3, 8, 2]
<El-Cideon> "Oh, and I'm capable of providing a minor boon to one's innate abilities, should someone desire it," she adds after pausing to cast a spell on herself.
* Eliaphas changes topic to '6Corben: 125/137, Eliaphas: 102/102, Madeline: 82/96(-1wis)| Flame Arrows: 44|'
<Madeline> Madeline finishes up adjusting the mantle that now hangs over her chest, and she makes a light shrug. "My abilities have proven sufficient thus far," she voices, shuddering with relief as her wounds close up.
<Eliaphas> "Accepting such would be a step towards damnation in the eyes of the Lord," Eliaphas likewise refuses said boon.
<El-Cideon> "Oh really, as if he can see anything that happens here. I can't imagine why else it would still be here." She shrugs.
* Corben fiddles with a cloak before deeming himself presentable. "I'm good."
<Madeline> "We can discuss theology whilst on the move," suggests Madeline, eager to be gone.
<Eliaphas> There's little point debating it with a demon anyway, so Eliaphas falls silent and makes for the exit.
<El-Cideon> "Suit yourself," she says, sounding disappointed. "The kitchens aren't far. We either walk through my room and then take a stroll through the servants' wing--which I'd rather not since the maids reside there when not on task--or we circle round through the ballroom and dining room. No one should be in either of those at this hour, so..." Kisantha nods towards the western door.
<Madeline> "Point them out to me when we draw near, and I should be able to purloin what we need," voices Madeline.
<Eliaphas> "That sounds the best route," Eliaphas agrees, heading that way and opening the door in question.
<El-Cideon> The next series of rooms are indeed devoid of inhabitants. A lounge full of upholstered chairs and sofas is next to the library. From there the group moves north through the ballroom--aside from an instrument of some sort covered in cloth in one corner, there's nothing here you couldn't see from outside--another lounge, and then a gilded dining room lit by grand chandeliers. Kisantha points to the eastern door in this long room.
<El-Cideon> "If you want to walk right in, that's the door. Alternately...they used a series of dumbwaiters back in the old days, to move food around the inner ring without anyone of breeding having to suffer the indignity of looking at a servant. It might be quieter to sneak in that way."
<Eliaphas> "You could go through the door and provide a distraction without any risk to yourself while we sneak the other way," Eliaphas suggests to the damnably sexy librarian.
<Madeline> "I'll use the dumbwaiter to get in. It's less likely to be watched. Where is one?" asks Madeline, after a moment. "We should avoid any attention if possible, if they truly come in large numbers."
<El-Cideon> "I could," she says, momentarily brightening up. "It's so rare I have a chance to employ my innate talents!" She chews her lip for a moment. "Mostly because I dwell in a castle full of dead people and they can't quite respond the way I'd like them to...Well, it's not unusual for me to ask a meal for my assistants. Perhaps it'll keep the chefs busy enough."
<El-Cideon> Kisantha points to a small door set in the wall midway along the room, next to a normal-sized set of doors that lead out into swirling fog. "Bit of a tight fit, but you should survive the discomfort, I'm sure." She saunters over to the kitchen door.
<Eliaphas> "Even if the dead maids don't react much, you can be sure we'll be well appreciative of however distracting you can be," Eliaphas assures her.
* Eliaphas heads towards the small door to commence sneakage!
<El-Cideon> "Well, I'm just happy to please someone!" she says before exiting to the next room.
<Corben> "Just yell and I'll rush in," Corben promises, sadly not as sneaky as his companions.
<El-Cideon> Eliaphas finds the door slides open to reveal a small, mobile cupboard set on runners. A person could squeeze in there if they desired.
<Eliaphas> Since Madeline is stealthier than he, Eliaphas is forced to stand aside and let her take the one-person only route. He'll just go wait by the door to provide backup if trouble arises.
<Madeline> Madeline reaches the dumbwaiter and checks to see if she can even move it from within.
<El-Cideon> There is a discreet lever on the wall just outside it. Madeline could reach it if she needed to.
<Madeline> After managing to clamber inside, Madeline does just that!
<El-Cideon> The dumbwaiter clicks downward silently, the runners well-oiled and maintained. After a very brief trip, it stops in a sub-level composed of bare stone walls and narrow corridors. Infrequent torches keep this area barely lit. You can see the corridor proceeds east and west, and just next to your makeshift elevator is a branch south.
<Madeline> After taking a moment to listen for any passers-by, Madeline opts to peek out the dumbwaiter to glance side-to-side!
<Madeline> roll 1d20+18 perception
* Hatbot --> "Madeline rolls 1d20+18 perception and gets 36."12 [1d20=18]
<El-Cideon> Madeline hears nothing in the area but the quiet guttering of a nearby torch, nor do you see anyone.
<Madeline> She slips out and opts to check the southern branch, keeping carefully to the walls and the shadowed areas.
<Madeline> roll 1d20+33 stealth
* Hatbot --> "Madeline rolls 1d20+33 stealth and gets 35."12 [1d20=2]
<El-Cideon> After about seventy feet of uninterrupted sneaking, Madeline comes to a four-way junction. At the cross is a small room in which is centered a metal contraption that looks like a larger version of what facilitated her trip belowground. This elevator has a waist-high guardrail and looks big enough for four people to travel with room to spare. The only place it could go is down--cold air gusts up from the dark hole beneath it.
<Madeline> Konking herself on the head for a moment, Madeline quickly starts to head in an easterly direction.
<El-Cideon> East leads her to a junction similar to the first one she found--narrow corridor proceeding north and south, and a short eastern spur that terminates in a pair of doors.
<Madeline> Madeline sneaks up to the pair of doors, and puts her ear to it for a moment to listen to the other side.
<Madeline> roll 1d20+18
* Hatbot --> "Madeline rolls 1d20+18 and gets 23."12 [1d20=5]
<El-Cideon> Madeline hears nothing on the other side. There is another dumbwaiter at this junction, but based on Kisantha's directions, this would likely be beneath the servants' quarters, with the kitchens further north.
<Madeline> Thusly, Madeline heads back to the north, forming three sides to a square she has been tracing since leaving the dumbwaiter.
<El-Cideon> Madeline reaches a corner this time. Another dumbwaiter is set in the eastern wall here, identical in appearance to the one she rode in earlier.
<Madeline> Nothing for it but to hop in and mobilize a bit further down the rails.
<El-Cideon> Madeline moves on up this time. The dumbwaiter door is slid closed on your arrival, so you find yourself sitting in the dark, but you can easily make out Kisantha's voice amidst the sound of knives hitting a stone countertop.
<Madeline> Madeline mumbles a spell of total (if brief) invisibility before sliding it open and slipping out.
<El-Cideon> Madeline emerges in the corner of what is obviously the castle's main kitchen. Along the western wall, overseen by a watchful Kisantha, a small gang of undead chefs busy themselves preparing a meal. The kitchen is well-equipped with stoves and faucets. There are normal doors to the west and south, and a heavy metal one in a compartment in the northern wall. Frost edges around this door. Along the wall nearest Madeline is a long array of shelves loaded with strips of dried meat, blocks of salt, strings of vegetables, and other dry goods.
<El-Cideon> "Carrots, add carrots, too," Kisantha's saying. "Good vegetable, very suggestive, very useful. I don't know, however many you have. Leave one of them uncut. It's to send a message, you see? You probably don't."
<Madeline> Food begins to vanish off the shelves, as Madeline plucks item after item away from the shelves and dumps them in her bag of holding. Hopefully, nobody will notice a few things missing...
<Madeline> roll 1d20+33
* Hatbot --> "Madeline rolls 1d20+33 and gets 35."12 [1d20=2]
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+25 chefs couldn't make that even if they weren't busy
* Hatbot --> "El-Cideon rolls 1d20+25 chefs couldn't make that even if they weren't busy and gets 34."12 [1d20=9]
<El-Cideon> Madeline's work goes unnoticed, even her co-conspirator apparently overlooking her presence!
<Madeline> With sufficient goods obtained, Madeline goes to retrace her steps back to the others.
<El-Cideon> Just after Madeline's return, Kisantha emerges from the door bearing a plate heaped with food and steaming merrily. "Well, I hope elf-girl got everything she wanted, because I really can't request more than this in one night without it looking odd."
<Madeline> "Half-elf," grunts Madeline, patting the bag slung over her shoulder. "Let's get this to the captives?"
<Eliaphas> "Good work, I'm sure this will make their wait more bearable," Eliaphas approves, starting to head back that way.
<Corben> And so, the undead chefs get to exist another day. Corben brings up the rear.
<El-Cideon> Either Maxwell stays true to his word about keeping his forces at bay or you're lucky enough not to run into any, but the trip back to the western wing is uneventful. The former prisoners are, of course, happy to see you, and possibly even more happy to be greeted with plentiful food. Kisantha receives many admiring looks, which she returns with an eager smile. The group's noble representative also reports a batch of prisoners that had previously been taken away by monsters showed up at the mess hall not too long ago, though none of them have any recollection of what went on while they were away.
<Corben> It seems Maxwell is more than happy to step back and let them kill the competition, which is just fine with Corben.
* Eliaphas keeps a close eye on Kisantha to make sure she doesn't slip off with any of her admirers for a quickie before they leave.
<El-Cideon> Kisantha notices this scrutiny and merely bats her eyelashes in response. "Oh Eliaphas, are you jealous?"
* Eliaphas grunts sourly. "Just making sure you don't break any hearts, Kisantha."
<El-Cideon> "Mm-hm," she says skeptically. "Least of all yours? Have no worries, I'll remain faithful to you if that's what you desire, my dear priest."
<Madeline> Madeline returns from giving the nobility a status report, and ends up rolling her eyes. "This is so very insipid. Can't you both see that this is neither the time nor place for flirting?"
<El-Cideon> "You're right, I know many better places for it."
<Corben> "Concentrate on killing the undead."
<Madeline> "And I'm sure none of them are in this castle."
* Eliaphas just frowns at both women in his best bitter old man style. "We have work to do. Lets go," he says, turning his back on them and heading out of the mess hall.
<El-Cideon> "Well, the bath is quite pleasant..." she says with a wistful look before following.
<Madeline> "I had to kill a succubus once," notes Madeline, trailing after Eliaphas. "And the mage who summoned her. It took twelve seconds."
<Eliaphas> "Normally by the time I get there the mage is already dead and the succubus has half the town in her thrall. Bloody business," Eliaphas returns.
<El-Cideon> Up the ramp and back to the castle proper. "She should've fled," Kisantha says dismissively. "Really, there are always more eager young wizards...Now, across the courtyard or around the corridors?"
<Corben> "The corridors are fine," Corben suggests, feeling slightly left out. He never killed a succubus before....
<Eliaphas> "North should be clear," Eliaphas nods, taking that route.
<El-Cideon> Kisantha nods, and agrees with circling 'round the northern corridor you're familiar with (the south of the castle is Maxwell's domain, and why test his patience?) She stops at the juncture that branches south to the east wing and away to the chapel. "Right. Now, I've not personally engaged any of Mary's lot before, but I keep an eye out during raid years and I've seen a little of how they treat visitors. The weaker spirits will attempt to drain our strength. The nurses have learned some of Mary's old tricks and will do their best to strike the unsuspecting. If you have any spells to prevent either of these things, now is the time."
<Eliaphas> "The Lord's blessings will protect us here as they did from the false priest and his servant," Eliaphas nods, praying over himself, Madeline, and Corben.
<Eliaphas> OOC: Death Ward on PCs. 13 minutes.
<Madeline> Madeline waves a hand, and surrounds herself with many similar copies! "I should be fine. I will take down the maids; you two are better equipped for fighting spirits," she notes.
<Madeline> roll 1d4+1 images
* Hatbot --> "Madeline rolls 1d4+1 images and gets 2."12 [1d4=1]
<Corben> "I will be ready," Corben swears. "No spirit will take me off guard!"
<El-Cideon> "But not me, of course," Kisantha says with a dramatic eyeroll. "Anyway...Armor will not avail us against them, unless any of you brought specialized gear, so we're best to let Corben be the center of attention as long as he wears that set. Finally, as for Mary herself...well, if you look sharp, you can spot spectral chains binding her thralls to her. I suspect some manner of personal connection. I think we can assume she'll know we're here as soon as any of her thralls see us."
<Madeline> "Then I suppose if we take her down, her minions will no longer harangue us. Well, I can hope so."
<El-Cideon> "Such is my theory," Kisantha agrees.
<Eliaphas> If she's going to be such a baby about it... Eliaphas sighs and taps her shoulder to provide her with a blessing. "I can only cast so many spells, this one will give you some protection but not as much." If there was any justice in the world it would burn her...
<Eliaphas> OOC: heroism for the succubus
<El-Cideon> Justice evidently has no place in Mistvalken. "Oh, thank you, Eliaphas," she coos.
<Eliaphas> "Lets go, the spells won't last forever," Eliaphas says gruffly, pushing on into Mary's domain!
<Madeline> Madeline is on the trail, bow up and ready to shoot at any obstacle!
<El-Cideon> Southwards, past a couple doors that Kisantha mostly ignores--"Stables, empty for ages, and the baths--"One of the safer places in the castle, and I'm not just saying that because it's my favorite place to relax,"--shortly past a cross that leads west into the courtyard and east out into mists. Just beyond this, a corridor branches east. Doors line this corridor; at the far end you can see it turns south, and in the corner is a set of stairs. "We'll want to hit the infirmary, no doubt. It's on the second floor."
* Eliaphas hefts his crossbow and heads for the stairway!
* Corben leads the way, of course!
<El-Cideon> You move on, undisturbed by specters so far. As you ascend the stairs, Kisantha mentally sends to each of you in turn: "If any particularly unpleasant fate should befall me here, alert my assistants afterwards. You needn't say anything else, they'll know what to do."
<El-Cideon> The second floor is an echo of the first...save that it's occupied. Kisantha is just pointing out the door on your immediate right as being the infirmary when a figure drifts out of a wall in front of you--pale, translucent, an attractive young woman in nurse's gown largely washed of color.
<Eliaphas> "Right," Eliaphas mutters under his breath. What's unpleasant by a demon's standards, though? He supposes if she screams a lot that might tell him, but that might just be the noise she makes when having a good time.
<Corben> With a ghost so blatantly flaunting her deadness before him, Corben is left with no choice but to charge her down!

<Madeline> Madeline stands ready, awaiting the strikes of Eliaphas and Corben before following through with her own less-than-accurate arrows!

A similar shade drifts through a wall along the southern hallway and makes a beeline for Eliaphas!
