As someone who enjoys sci-fi, this appeals to me.

As someone who is not a coder, I also look at it with forming dread.

Thoughts?

Huh...

Well, very Notch.

I still think the number of folks who really want to code as their entertainment are small.

Still, these kinds of games are needed.  Very needed.  They are the types of things that the programmers of tomorrow need as gateway drugs to getting into the craft.  So, rock on, Notch.
Well, Goodbye.

Brian

Things to not like:

Persistent world, subscription, single shared universe (for multiplayer), Notch's tacit endorsement of virii being written for the 'internal 16-bit' computer.

Space exploration sim: AWESOME.

Game suddenly turning into sanctioned RL hacker war: NOT FOR ME.

Do not at all like the idea of someone hacking into my character's system, losing all of my stuff because the system was compromised, and then being told, "Lawl, lrn2code!" to try and get out of the predicament.

Well, you can always just not share your computer code with people you don't trust! I also imagine there'd probably end up being a repository website with common programs which will include at least one good anti-virus.

I couldn't even follow any of the coding in his short code faq, and since that's half the selling point, I probably won't be interested in it. I do agree with Drac that it's a pretty cool game concept. And I'm really okay with the whole virus/anti-virus thing with those computers.
<Cidward> God willing, we'll all meet in Buttquest 2: The Quest for More Butts.

When was the original webpage made announced by Notch himself?  Perhaps 3 days before the blog posting?

I've looked over the site, and ... coding in pseudo-assembler as a game?  I doubt this was intended to be taken seriously.

Brian

The actual april fool's:

http://marseffect.net/

To quote it: "This was an April Fools joke. Or rather, the name was. The game is real."

And its website is here:

So....  Sorry?

I already looked at the site, which is why I mentioned that the programming part is assembly - anyone who has a CS degree can tell at a glance.  If the game is real, then it's real...I just wonder who his target market is and why he thinks it's going to be more than 17 people across the world.   Maybe I'm wrong about what he's going to emphasize in this game, because I've based my opinion on the two links about design on that site.  When they boil down to this...

and

Btw, since...

I'm not playing it since it takes micromanagement to the extreme, but if you like dwarf fortress and you like 4x games, this might be what you wanted.

*eyes brian* I think you mistake Brian for...maybe Hal?
Well, Goodbye.

I'll see your integrated-assembly-coding game and raise you a tycoon game based on the development of Linux distros: http://indiegames.com/2012/04/linux_tycoon_a_linux_distro_bu.html
