Ninja Lostar

Hello! I am Asa! I couldn't find the introduction page, so I decided to introduce myself here. I've been a  fic writer wince late 2009, and a big fan of the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise. My main fiction is a AU called the Gamma Dimension.

The Gamma Dimension is a Haruhi Suzumiya fanfiction project I started in December 2009. The objective of that fiction was to take the latest light novel events and set up an environment where Yuki Nagato and Kyon would establish a more intimate relationship. At first I chose the approach because at that time, I freshly marathoned light novels 5-9 and the plethora of events and unanswered questions inspired me. Then after sampling how others decided to ship the couple, I concluded that whatever I come up with couldn't be TOO ridiculous. That and I was confident that I paid enough attention to the canon to keep everyone at least 80% in-character. That was my challenge. Whether or not I succeeded is a matter of opinion, but if anything's for certain, the project was very fun, since it was the longest and most complete work I've written to-date.

I recently started on the sequel to the previously mentioned fiction codenamed: Haruhi GD with a new set of goals including outdoing what I have already done. Another goal is to devise a new plotline that diverges from the canon's direction all while paying as much respect to the canon events as possible. That and I eventually plan on introducing a core antagonist. I did devise an extensive outline for this, so I have a good idea of what major events would go down and how I want Haruhi GD to end. I'm not one to simply bombard people with wads of text, though. (Part of why my chapters usually wind up so small in size..)

What I'll do instead is stop by this thread every once in a while and introduce a new concept. A good amount of these concepts are a little more sketchy than others. And some of the concepts probably fall within a trope I'm unfamiliar with, especially since I haven't browsed that place as much as I should have. Anyways, feel free to C & C any aspect of this project that catches your interests, whether it's the preview posts published her or what is already public. The next post will cover one of the said concepts that may be surfacing shortly. After words I'll probably lurk around these boards randomly like the ninja that I am.

Believe it or not, the Gamma Dimension's first act does not possess any original characters, as I did not need any to tell the story at the time. I did, however, pull in a cameo OC from another fanfiction, but it was one minor role. Anyways for this act, I plan on introducing two original characters to the story. There is a twist to this statement however Both of these 'characters' are mentioned canonically by Yuki Nagato in the third excerpt the written in Book Eight's "Editor-In-Chief" short story:

Spoiler: ShowHide
Unititled 3 (Yuki Nagato)

A black coffin remained in the room. There was nothing else.

Above the coffin in the middle of the dark club room, sat one man.

"Good day."

He said to me. He was smiling.

Good day.

As I kept standing there, a white cloth alighted from behind the man. In the middle of the darkness, the cloth was enveloped by a pale light.

"Pardon my lateness."

The white cloth said. Or rather, the person who was wearing the big, white piece of cloth. Through holes cut out where the eyes would be, black pupils were looking at me.

It seemed like the one inside was a girl. I could tell from her voice.

The man laughed in a low voice.

"The recital has not yet started."

The man did not move from above the coffin.

"There is time, still."

The recital.

I was remembering something. What was I going to present here? Quickly, now. But I could not remember.

"There is time."

The man said. He was smiling at me. The apparition of the white girl danced around happily.

"We will wait. Until you remember."

The girl said. I gazed at the black coffin.

There was only one thing; I remembered why I was here.

My place was within the coffin.

I had come from there, and I had come back here so I could return. But the man was sitting on the coffin. As long as he doesn't leave, I cannot go in.

However, there was nothing in me to present. I wasn't qualified to join the recital.

The man started singing in a low voice. Synchronizing with the white cloth's dance.

As long as he doesn't leave, I cannot go in.

My aims is to bring literal animation to this scenario in the form of OC's.

THE MAN

The man is soon to be introduced as the recurring alien antagonist for this act. He is mostly seen trespassing inside Kyon's mind (only) while he sleeps. While the alien roams freely this way, it subtly affects his thought processes. Once Kyon discovers this anomaly, he desires to do whatever it takes to pry the pest from his mind.

If Kyon catches the alien in his sleep and challenges him, this is the only condition where the alien will defend himself with force. In this case, the scene changes from a mere dream to a Closed Space where the challenge will take place. The first time this happens, Kyon & Co. are powerless to oppose the foe and has to bail. Discovering what it takes to overthrow this opponent makes up a large portion of this act, while actually managing to overcome him likely marks near the act's conclusion.

Sometimes when Kyon catches the alien in his sleep, and knows he cannot win, he chats instead. He  would appear to be around Koizumi's philosophical level, and most of his topics consist of him inquiring about humanity. For example, he wonders why Kyon strongly desires the alien to leave his mind alone.

The tentative name for this alien, for the time being is Asahoshi (Morningstar). Its motives are strictly to observe Kyon's unconscious thought processes by the order of a higher power.

THE GIRL

The girl in a bedsheet has been introduced in the first chapter of Haruhi GD. Kyon met her first during a casual meeting between him, Sasaki, Kuyou, and Kyoko. (She is first identified as being an acquaintance of Kuyou.) Most of the time, she emits almost no presence, as she does not appear to have a personality of her own. The ghost randomly decides to move it with Kyon, lounging around randomly, and unseen by anyone else in the house with the exception of Shamisen.

The ghost takes the role of a true observer; she takes almost no action as she observes Kyon and all his friends (unseen by most). The relevance of the conversations between her and Kyon are mostly minuscule. The ghost possesses a strong sense of empathy. She gradually picks up on the quirks of everyone that hangs around Kyon.. Eventually, Kyon discovers if he treats the ghost as one of his friends specifically, he can conduct conversations as if he were talking to the actual person.. although she never imitates Kyon in this act.

The tentative name of this character is Miramira (a pun to the popular quote 'mirror mirror on the wall'.) Whenever Kyon decides to oppose Asahoshi, Miramira will always be there as a spectator. She has the power to negate the Closed Space Arena at any time that Kyon desires to escape, (sort of like a dungeon-exit NPC.) Miramira's character is best described as having no character, but having the developing the ability to emulate other characters in the story the more she learns. The actual purpose for such a character hardly comes into play in this act.

CLOSURE

Original characters are a tricky business when it comes to fanfiction. I hardly believe readers run through stories to look for non-canonical characters to dominate the plot. I personally think OC's are best used as tools to add more definition to those who are canon. Hopefully when the time comes, I will wind up conveying that belief properly.

If Asahoshi's intentions are only to observe, why does it subtly affect Kyon's thought processes?  Is this effect unintentional?  Or is it viewed as a necessary and unavoidable side effect of observation?  Or an effect that Asahoshi thought nothing of, and that's why it can't understand Kyon's resistance?

On the theory of original characters in general, I agree that if the canonical characters are involved, having originals displace those characters is tricky business.  I like having original characters in support roles or as villains--these tend to be safe roles, though one can be more ambitious.

Right now I see you have pretty clear ideas on what these characters are supposed to do, but their overall purposes in the long-run seem to be...ah, a surprise?  Well, that's okay, too.  Since you do have a clear idea what's going on, you probably don't need any big-picture thoughts on what purposes they will serve.

Basically whatever side effect Kyon would go through is of little relevance to the observers. The information gathered within the subconscious. The information gathered this way is in preparation of an event that has been foreseen by the observers.

I wouldn't say that completely. I have a decent layout in terms of direction, but I tend to take things one step at a time. Otherwise I tend to think too far ahead and enter a recursive daydream state while making little true progress.. if that makes sense.
