86: Space has a terrible secret

[12:18] <@Ebiris> A camp is hurriedly set up at the base of Illie's tree on a more dry spot of ground sheltered from the effect of Silke's downpour. Both aquatic fey beg off to return to the water so they can regain their strength, but promise to remain within shouting distance in case they're needed. Illie lithely climbs up her tree to rest, while Tarlari stands impassively at the edge of the clearing, facing Eastwards towards where the meteorite must have fallen, a focused expression on her haughty features...
[12:19] * @Henrietta goes to sleep without much fuss. After the day they had, it only fits to just rest and worry about anything else later.
[12:22] <Rudy> Rudy's attempts at rest are denied to him, and his face settles into an unusual scowl. For him, it seems much of the night will be left staring into the canopy whilst he attempts to snatch some sleep...
[12:26] <@Ebiris> Even before anyone can manage to properly reach unconsciousness, Tarlari's voice intrudes. "Beware, this rock from beyond has brought its poisonous cargo to devour the soil. The plants tell me of creatures far larger than any mole, burrowing beneath their roots from where the rock fell."
[12:26] <Rudy> "Heard of that one, Liamae?" asks Rudy, rolling over to peer at the sorceress.
[12:27] * @Henrietta shudders. "Underground? They're... going underground?"
[12:27] <Lucie> "So I guess we can't just let them burrow until morning?" Lucie says with a tired air.
[12:28] <@Ebiris> "It makes sense, something that lives in a rock in space can burrow through soil with ease," Liamae posits, sitting up, "But that's not very aggressive. We could be dealing with an immature creature that's hiding to grow itself," she ponders only for Tarlari to interrupt.
[12:28] <@Ebiris> "They are *very* large, sky sorceress."
[12:29] <Rudy> "How large, exactly? Ten, twenty feet wide?"
[12:29] <@Henrietta> "Umm, how many of them?"
[12:31] <@Ebiris> Tarlari frowns a moment, "I am unfamiliar with your measurements..." she looks around a moment before pointing to a tree about twenty five feet high and three wide at the trunk, "But not unlike that tree's dimensions. I have heard of two, but many plants have gone silent near the crater. There is no telling what sickness festers there."
[12:32] <@Ebiris> "Then we're probably dealing with ambush predators," Liamae decides. "That's too big to be immature... I hope, anyway. They probably hide underground and erupt up when they feel something moving above them."
[12:32] <Lucie> "That...sounds like something we don't want to let underground in the first place," Lucie grudgingly acknowledges.
[12:33] * @Henrietta shudders again. "We... we are going there to stop them now, it sounds like."
[12:34] <@Ebiris> "We should," Liamae stands up, "Things like this... they multiply if left unchecked. Right now is the weakest they'll be."
[12:34] * Lucie stands up, with a sigh of audible reluctance at not being to spend a not in the grove's healing aura before facing monsters from the heavens.

[12:34] <Rudy> "These are alien things, are they?" asks Rudy, glancing at Tarlari. "So you won't have any problems with using abominations to fight abominations, I hope?"

[12:39] <Lucie> "We can only hop ethese ones don't look as bad as Myra," Lucie says as she activates her magical armor.
[12:41] <Rudy> "That's fine. They're made for killing, and getting killed," replies Rudy, standing up. "I'll keep them off your back, so don't worry."
[12:48] <@Ebiris> "Then let us go. Illie, be sure to call on the others if you sense danger!" Tarlari calls up the tree before striding through the woods. "The plants will tell us where to find these creatures. Better to end their spread first before discovering what blights the crater itself."
[12:48] <@Henrietta> "Y-Yes! We should start small!" Henrietta wholeheartedly agrees.
[12:49] <@Ebiris> "Y'know, all that time I talked about there being monsters in meteorites?" Liamae confides as she gets up and follows the fey, "I'd hoped I was wrong. Would've been nice to just have nothing but jewels and rare metals..."
[12:50] <@Henrietta> "Maybe these are jewel monsters?"
[12:51] <Lucie> "Don't know what world you think you're living in these days, Henri," Lucie says. "We ever get that lucky?"
[12:51] <@Henrietta> "B-But! They come from a different world! Definitely!"
[12:51] <@Ebiris> "Well, it's actually possible. So much as anything is, anyway," Liamae backs Henrietta up.
[12:52] <Rudy> "Practically speaking, a rock like this should have some rare metals in it," says Rudy, after a moment. "Depending on how big it actually is, it could take some time to dig out, though. But hey, maybe there'll just be a pile of otherworldly gold, right there?"
[12:53] <@Ebiris> Tarlari pauses on the edge of the forest, just as she clambers through the thorn barrier, "One of the creatures just revealed itself. It's attacking one of the warped wolves," she reveals. "The sorceress's guess was correct, it came up from beneath."
[12:55] <@Henrietta> "Umm, who is winning?"
[12:55] <Lucie> "Better a wolf than us," Lucie says. "Guess we'd better move before it gets underground again."
[12:55] <Rudy> "A wolf versus a creature of that size?" asks Rudy, shaking his head.
[12:56] <@Ebiris> "The... worm, I suppose. The wolf isn't even fighting back," the fey announces, moving past the barrier and leading the way onwards over muddy ground. The rain is at least slacking off but it's still cold and uncomfortable.
[12:57] <@Henrietta> Then they are going to help!
[12:59] <@Ebiris> Tarlari doesn't seem in any great hurry as she picks her way across the muddy sloped ground in the dark of night.
[12:59] <@Henrietta> "Can we, you think, hurry a bit? So that we are in time to, umm, save the wolf?"
[13:01] <Rudy> "Henri, there's a couple of miles between them and us," points out Rudy. "We can't sprint. And who cares about the wolf, anyway?"
[13:02] <@Ebiris> "Run if you like, I am curious how agile humans are and how well they can see in the dark," Tarlari remarks, "The wolf is dead now, anyway, and lies over a mile ahead."
[13:06] <@Henrietta> "A-Ah, then it is too late...."
[13:07] <Lucie> "Funny thing, I can see pretty well at night these days," Lucie says as they walk. "Or at least I feel like I'll never get lost."
[13:08] <Rudy> "Great. You can hold my hand and keep me safe from the darkness," says Rudy, in a monotone.
[13:09] <@Ebiris> Continuing to advance at a careful pace, it's a few minutes later that Tarlari stops. "There is something strange about the wolf's corpse. The plants are unable to explain it to me. But more importantly, another creature has emerged from the crater on a path that leads to the corpse."
[13:09] * @Henrietta warily draws her flail, using it to light her way.
[13:10] * Lucie does the same with her mace. "Just have to see for ourselves," she says.
[13:10] <@Ebiris> "Another worm?" Liamae asks, only for Tarlari to shake her head.
[13:10] <@Ebiris> "No, it is akin to a giant spider."
[13:11] <Lucie> "Great, the rock's full of celestial bugs."
[13:12] <Rudy> "Maybe it's like a scavanger?" says Rudy, forwning.
[13:14] <@Ebiris> "Could be they're all working to the same ends - the worm kills things and then the spider goes to collect the corpses... I wonder what's strange about them?" Liamae frowns thoughtfully.
[13:16] <Lucie> "Doubt we'll have a chance to interview it and find out," Lucie says, marching onwards.
[13:19] <@Ebiris> Another few minutes pass before Tarlari stops, "The worm the killed the wolf, it is coming our way. Prepare yourselves!"
[13:20] <@Ebiris> Moving back a bit, Liamae casts shield on herself and looks around warily.
[13:20] * @Henrietta mirrors Liamae's actions as she casts her own Shield.
[13:21] <Rudy> Rudy presses a hand to the ground, before calling forth a powerful, hound-faced soldier to serve as his champion in this battle!

[13:28] <@Ebiris> Returning the hateful glare of the hound creature, Tarlari flexes her suddenly clawed fingers, her reserved mien becoming far more murderous and distracting her from all other concerns such that she can't provide a warning when the attack begins! The ground is heaved up underneath before it erupts forth! It's body is long and made up of bloated white segments like a maggot, merging into a torso of irridescent carapace and smooth pale skin, melding together into a face dominated by segmented black eyes and chittering mandibles. Below its monstrous face, two long claws of carapace weave glittering web from spinnerets set into its torso. The creature barely has time to be revealed in its majesty before setting itself on Rudy!

[14:03] <@Henrietta> "I-Is is alright that it is doing that?" Henrietta asks uneasily, pointing at the sagging mess.
[14:04] <Lucie> "How is it *supposed* to die?" Lucie wonders, taking a curious look at the liquefying beast from beyond the stars.
[14:04] <@Ebiris> Tarlari seems uninterested in replying as the hound has caught her attention once more. "Begone, or suffer the same fate!" she hisses furiously.
[14:04] <Rudy> The hound archon likewise begins to dissipate at Rudy's will, seeing as leaving it around whilst Tarlari is present... He grimaces, and looks down at the claw stuck in his chest. "Little help?" he grunts.
[14:05] * @Henrietta helps!
[14:06] <@Ebiris> The creature is steadily liquifying, but as it does parts bubble up and resolidify in regular and pointed shapes. Some only hold it for seconds but others maintain it longer, darkening as the ichor sloughs off and dissolves into the soil. "Better it only despoil one spot than what it would have done alive," Tarlari says, relaxing somewhat now and dismissing her rhino.

[14:09] <@Henrietta> "Umm. Are you alright?" she asks Rudy worriedly, tossing the claw aside.
[14:10] <Lucie> "What, really?" Lucie says, somewhat more intrigued by the possibility of imminent wealth than by allied injuries, kneeling by the pit to examine Liamae's claim.
[14:10] <Rudy> "I've been better," replies Rudy, using Henri's shoulder to steady himself. "We still have anything left in that wand?"

[14:11] <@Henrietta> "Umm. I am afraid not," Henrietta admits, peering over to where Lucie and Liamae are crouched.
[14:11] <@Ebiris> There's almost nothing left of the worm now, just a scattered patch of crystals that already look cut, and a hole filled with them lining its walls, rather like a geode.

[14:13] <Lucie> "Nothing's chewed on Henri in a while, she can take point," Lucie volunteers, picking up one of the gems to examine it.
[14:13] -> *Henrietta* These are Neglithite crystals, prized for use in things like antimagic shackles and armour of spell resistance. They're very rare, and even a quantity like this is worth a fortune.
[14:14] <Rudy> "That's great of you, Henri! Because I really need protection right now," he mutters, glancing sideways at Tarlari.
[14:14] <@Henrietta> "And, umm, these crystals are very rare! They will buy many wands!"
[14:14] <@Ebiris> The gem is cold in Lucie's fingers, and she feels her connection to her magic being dulled as she holds it.
[14:14] <Lucie> "Yeah? Well--ah!" Lucie drops it immediately!
[14:14] <@Henrietta> "Because they intefere with magic!"
[14:14] <@Ebiris> "So what now?" Liamae asks, standing, "Do we hunt the other worm or go to the wolf corpse?"
[14:15] <Lucie> "You know what, we'll collect these later," she says. "Let's...check out that wolf?"
[14:15] <@Henrietta> "The wolf corpse has that spider going to it, so perhaps that?" Henrietta agrees.
[14:15] <@Ebiris> Tarlari looks distant a moment, "If we set off now we might reach it at the same time as the spider," she announces.
[14:16] <Rudy> "Then we'd better make time," replies Rudy, straightening up and starting to march.
[14:16] <Lucie> "Fair enough," Lucie says. "Anything come off this rock needs killing, right?"
[14:16] <@Ebiris> "Looks that way!" Liamae says cheerfully, picking up her own pace.
[14:22] <@Ebiris> Setting off then, Tarlari speaks after a few minutes, "The second worm has claimed a victim, and another spider-creature has emerged in that direction," she announces.
[14:22] <Lucie> "What kind of victim?" Lucie asks, not proposing that they change course just yet.
[14:24] <@Ebiris> "A hibernating bear. It never had a chance," the fey responds, hurrying faster now, "Just over this rise we should see it..."
[14:25] * Lucie casts another shield spell, as the last has likely expired by now, and walks over the ridge (behind Tarlari, of course).
[14:26] <Rudy> Rudy mirrors Lucie's action out of a desire to avoid further pain...
[14:28] * @Henrietta is with the two of them, of course!
[14:28] <@Ebiris> Liamae does likewise, and upon cresting the ridge one can see below the ground torn up by the worm's passage. One of the overlarge black and red wolves lays mangled on the ground, its skull split open... and from its corpse hovers a cloud of crimson vapour, the canine's brain floating serenely within. Its mouth is a horridly prominent extension full of circular teeth like a lamprey, and atop its back are bulbuous protrusions, like blisters almost transparent - enough to see that several of them hold brains of various shapes. Chittering and murmuring, it squats over Lucie and extends its terrible mouth to cover her head, a horrible grinding and crunching sound heard for a moment before there's a flash of light and it pulls back with a surprised screech! Every eye turns to focus solely on Lucie as the last gem in her amulet dims, having saved her one last time!
