Yes, Koizumi is handy in that he is plausibly capable, as a character, of delivering some otherwise-out-of-place exposition. I suppose Tanigawa finds him handy as well, for the exact same reason....

Just a typo I noted (in the attached version on this thread): "you were seen to bed as recommended," should probably be "sent to bed".
That the dead tree with its scattered fruit, a thousand times may live....
