<Kotono> Thus the party races out. As they run the halls, people scurrying, there is a wall and floor shaking impact. A few seconds later it repeats, a massively loud THUMP THUMP THUMP. But the door outside is ahead, as people fall over and stagger from the shaking.

The sky is obscured with black smoke. Buildings burn everywhere. The streets are full of running and panicking people, screams a constant reinforcement to the banging. The brightness makes it easy to see - from the ocean great rocks come
<Kotono> hurtling, as if catapults are out there. Buildings buckle and shatter under the assault.
<Lucy> "This is new," Lucy mutters, staring at the hurtling rocks for a few long moments.
<Moore> Moore turns to Veren and to the others. "So, are we going to become Defenders of this town, or are we looking at another alternative...?"
<Veren > "Indeed."
<Pepo> Unfortunately he can't do much about giant flying rocks, Pepo just sticks close to the prone cat-loving mage.
<Veren > "If we intend to stay, it will build goodwill."
* Lucy casts Shield, in case flying pirates follow the flying rocks.
<Moore> Moore nods to Veren. "Exactly, so we should probably decide quickly!"
<Kotono> Adaea slowly rises and comes out, staring, "What...what is this?" she stares in utter dismay and shock, eyes as wide as dinner plates. "This isn't a normal pirate attack!" Meanwhile, another rush of people are coming past. 60ft away you can see them coming around the street - four men. Each is clad in black clothes with veils over their faces. They carry scimitars and move swiftly, blades

* Veren locks eyes on them and moves towards them, mind-scanning the closest one. OOC: DC 18
<Lucy> "Just one question," Lucy asks calmly, pointing at the black-clad figures. "Those are not in any way affiliated with the city? We may kill them?"
<Kotono> "They aren't!" Adaea stumbles back, "Pirates! They have the protective veils on!"

<Kotono> The creature indeed has active thoughts, though Veren doesn't have time to get any more as they advance forward. They point ahead at the stationary party and bellow in Common, "Retreat or die!" they call, before coming at them. "Rossalund is ours!" OOC: I'm calling init here, as they're coming at you any which way.
<Pepo> Pepo just yawns and licks at his forepaw, refraining from action unless any of them threaten his self-appointed charge, or they prove more dangerous than his companions.

<Kotono> The first pirate is faster than you'd like, charging ahead at the party. He gets right in their teeth, charging towards the advancing Veren and meeting him with scimitar slashes.

This one charges a bit to the side, going to engage Lucy head on. "Hi there," he says with a bit of breathless mirth, "Oh, we're going to have fun, lady." His blade dances out, "Can you keep up?"

<Kotono> But Lucy reflexively brings up her shield spell, which parries the blade with an ethereal CRACK of force. Behind you are the sounds of people running, a blind panic. Meanwhile the third pirate races in, going to Veren's side with a quick slash and grunt, "Cut 'em up and focus fire, idiot!" he snaps to the one on Lucy.

<Lucy> "My, but you are fast!" Lucy chirps, smiling at her attacker.
<Kotono> But Veren is able to weave to the side of this one, blade avoided as the third pirate closes in. He goes on Veren's other side as he races along, the shape shifter now surrounded on three sides and flanked. "Got it!" he calls. OOC: Are you flankable?

The pain is exquisite as he begins to bleed, the pirate letting out a whoop of joy - and as at the same time, Adaea falls back 10ft and quickly chants, pointing at the first pirate. "Stop!" Two motes of magic fly out from her, slamming right into his chest.

<Kotono> The pirate grunts at that and stumbles back, his free hand going to massage his chest, "Get the wizard!" he calls, "Someone put a fucking sword through her chest!" OOC: Pepo.
<Kotono> Above you a flying rock can be seen, crashing down somewhere near the gates within. The soft shake and louder crash of stone can be felt and heard, the latter echoing amid the cries of the fleeing citizens.
<Pepo> Sedately walking back towards Adaea, Pepo keeps his eyes on the melee and the first pirate to have acted, the one who charged Veren will feel a mental gong inside his head as it comes under assault!

<Moore> Moore clears his throat and suddenly shouts to the others! "Everyone, let's give this one our all! Defeat these dastardly invaders of this town and show them who's boss!" After that, he simply vanishes from sight, but his words continue to carry weight unto the others. OOC: +2 saves against fear and charm, +2 to hit and damage rolls. +2 more from my attack aura as a reminder for a total of +4

<Kotono> Moore vanishes from sight, his words bolstering his allies - including the besieged Veren, his wounds bleeding and hurting. OOC: You're up, Veren.
* Veren moves to feint the first pirate that charged him, trying to open a weakness in his defense for a strike! OOC: Move action.

<Lucy> 'The others called you an idiot, demeaning you!' Lucy thinks to the pirate menacing her. 'You cannot let them get away with it!'

<Kotono> But Lucy is too fast now, sidestepping as her shield deflects the edge of his scimitar from her body. But the third pirate nods and disengages, going for Lucy. OOC: AoO if you want to take it, Veren. He's willing to risk it with a perceived mind-control mage in play.

* Lucy brushes the dust off her clothes, looking down at both pirates somehow regardless of their relative heights. "You're making a mistake, you must realize."

<Kotono> Veren's other side now has a gash across it, just above his hip. He's bleeding all over, vision getting a little dimmer as his body leaks all over his clothes. OOC: Ow. Adaea.
<Kotono> Adaea fumbles in her robes, taking out a scroll and reading from it. "Zam zum zong zing zoom zap!" With the last syllable, a tiny bolt of lightning comes from the scroll, flying at the wounded third pirate as the scroll crumbles to dust.

<Kotono> The second pirate is cut up like a fish, slashed over and over until he falls in ta bloody heap. One down! Meanwhile, the pepoed pirate turns and hacks at the fourth pirate, that one swearing as he defends himself.

<Kotono> Got him! He falls under his fellow pirate's blade, collapsing to the ground. OOC: Free act for the second, since the other two are dominated.
* Veren grimaces and inspects his wounds, wiping his dagger off on the dead pirate's clothes before searching the body.
* Lucy nods in approval, before thinking to Pepo, 'It might be best if they tried to kill each other and we helped, to avoid having them interrogated.'
<Pepo> Pepo saunters forward to sniff at one of the pirate corpses, but it's really to get in range of telepathy with both of them once more. 'I was going to send them to attack their vessels, but that suffices,' he agrees, instructing the first victim to, 'Attack the last pirate you see,' and them echoing that command with the other.
<Kotono> On this, the pirates fall into a quick and lethal battle. Two more down, the pirates doing a good job of dispatching each other. OOC: Loot post coming since Veren is checking bodies. More after that.
<Kotono> Around you is chaos. The nearby citizens have fled. Rocks fly in the sky above and more smoke rises. A nearby building has been hit and is starting to burn despite being solid brick. The pirates lie dead and Adaea stares around, "This...what is this?" she asks weakly, visibly shaking. "Where are the Coven? Master Flanagan?" she calls, looking around. OOC: Free act. Note that looting does take
<Kotono> a bit of time, so if you take things that'll be reflected.

<Pepo> Pepo just walks back to Adaea and rubs his head against her legs.
* Veren grabs Adaea by the arm and gives her a little shake.
<Lucy> "Would you mind terribly showing us to Mister Flanagan's quarters?"
<Veren > "Adaea, focus. You're the only one here that knows this place. Where do we need to go?"
<Kotono> OOC: Diplo check. Lucy surely has the highest mod so she'll take the lead. Pepo and Veren can aid since they're also trying.

Slowly she rubs her face with a hand, as about two dozen people come running from the same direction as the pirates. "This isn't like any other pirate attack. It's more like a war in Ostomar that I've read about - and more people are coming," she points that way, as the panicked herd runs right for them.
<Moore> Moore decides to stay invisible for the time being!
<Lucy> "His quarters," Lucy repeats insistently, picking one of the black veils to study it curiously.
<Veren > "Yes, then take us to Flanagan. He will be able to direct us."

<Kotono> It's a well-made veil. Looks like some sort of silk, strong and tough. It's somewhat transparent in spite of the darkness and solidness of it. <Kotono> It's Lucy who's sharp enough to glance up. The side of the building you're near is coming down, towards the party. It's just starting, a second to see it and react. Likewise, a moment later Veren notes the same thing. OOC: Both of you are capable of a single action here, and you two alone. Use it as you please.

* Veren grabs Adaea and tries to dive both of them out of the way!
<Lucy> "Collapsing building!" Lucy cries out the obvious, scooping up Pepo and dashing out of immediate danger.
<Pepo> Pepo doesn't try and claw her eyes out or anything. Really he just goes pretty limp once picked up.
<Kotono> Veren and Lucy grab Adaea and Pepo, leaving only Moore as the building's side comes crashing down. They rush ahead and into the ruined street as...OOC: Ref save, Moore.

<Kotono> Moore is gone just like that, joining the others as the crash of stone and rubble comes. The alley you came from is blocked off. It's bright here as fires burn and light sheds from the sea. Far ahead, in the brightness towards the see, you can see several black-sailed ships. Near one is a massive, 50ft tall pillar of stone. It looks to be a veiled woman  half covered in stone snakes. It isn't
<Kotono> moving, but it sure stands out. Above you more rocks fly, looks like from the ships themselves. You can tell from here, but some sort of on-deck catapults?
<Lucy> "What might that be?" Lucy asks Adaea, pointing at the massive pillar.
* Veren watches the area as they move for any other dangers lurking...
<Kotono> "No..." Adaea whispers, "That's Lady Asdra, head witch of the Coven!" she points, "But she shouldn't be petrified like that. Something's gone very wrong!" OOC: Perception, Veren.
<Lucy> "Then the city might genuinely be losing," Lucy muses. "Huh. How far to your master's quarters from here?"
<Moore> OOC: Is it possible to do any Knowledge checks on medusas and what could petrify them?
<Pepo> 'I believe without the ruling body present, civil order will collapse even if the pirates are defeated,' Pepo muses to the others, still in Lucy's arms. 'Should we look at avenues for escaping the vicinity?'

<Lucy> 'If we must abandon this place so soon,' Lucy thinks to Pepo, 'I am not leaving empty-handed. Not if we are close to a mage's sanctum.'

<Kotono> "Four blocks," Adaea replies, pointing towards the west. Meanwhile Veren can see all is chaos. People flee and shout, others run. No pirates around here at least - they're further ahead from the way people are running, if they're fleeing them. Meanwhile Moore recalls one bit of lore: A medusa that sees her own image can be petrified. Maybe. Possibly.
<Pepo> He swishes his tail about but soon calms in her arms. If that's the way it's to be, that's the way it's to be.
<Kotono> After a moment, "I don't know these pirates, they're so different than other raids," Adaea says as she looks around.
<Lucy> "Lead on," Lucy instructs her, looking excited again. It's so close!
<Veren > "We should move soon if we want to avoid more fighting."

<Kotono> The party runs two blocks. The city is nicer here, but still ruined. People aren't here at all - it's almost empty, save for the bodies of a few pirates and guardsmen. But as you race along...OOC: Perception, all. -2.

<Kotono> It's hard to see in the glare of light, but Lucy and Moore are keen-eyed enough to see it coming - a catapult boulder, coming right at the party. It's ablaze and coming for them, like a meteorite. OOC: Single action, Lucy'n'Moore.

<Lucy> "Catapult!" Lucy cries out, leaping at Adaea to push the two of them down to the ground and out of the immediate impact none too gently.
<Moore> Moore shouts to the others. "MOVE!" He hopes that his words are enough to spur them on as he flies up to try and avoid the impending boulder!
* Veren looks confused for a moment.
<Kotono> Adaea, Lucy, Pepo and Moore are thus clear - but Veren is not. He looks up with just enough warning to react. OOC: Ref save, +2 bonus, Veren.

<Kotono> Veren dives out of the way, tumbling into a roll to avoid the catapult shot. It lands where everyone was, making a big, burning crater. Sprays of rock come all over, like an explosive round that peppers the party.

<Lucy> "Well, that wasn't very nice," Lucy grumbles, climbing back to her feet. "Let's hurry, Miss Adaea!"
<Veren > "Let's get off the street. Adaea, how well do you know what's in Flanagan's rooms?"
<Pepo> Pepo meows in pain and wriggles into Lucy's arms, trusting her for his safety right now since her senses have been on the ball at spotting these threats.
<Moore> Moore pats out a few things on himself still on fire. "Once we can take a moment to rest, I can prepare something to help us recover."
<Kotono> "I know well enough, I live there when training," she coughs as she rises, blood coming from an injury on her arm. A shard has stuck there, slashing a line across. "We have to hurry now, this isn't safe!"
<Lucy> "I know, I know," she tells Pepo quietly, before raising her voice. "This is where all-out dashing would not go amiss. After you!"
<Veren > "Does he have a scroll that can turn Lady Asdra back?"
<Pepo> 'As a suggestion,' Pepo's voice booms in the party's minds, 'If the city is to fall, wearing amulets of fealty may be unwise.'
<Lucy> 'Indeed. I did bring one of those veils on the off chance the tides turn,' Lucy thinks back to him.
<Moore> 'Hey, good idea!' comes a cheerful thought from Moore back to Pepo.
