Day 20A: Boredom on the Boat

<Kotono> It's an unremarkable period. Lucy's on deck to clear her head after another study session, while Veren is training. Old Kamhoff has the wheel. Relative serenity is spoiled by Old Kamhoff staggering away from the wheel, "Ah FUCK," he mutters, before running to the railing and being noisily sick over it.
* Veren stops and turns to him.
<Veren > "Are you alright?"
* Lucy lets out a quiet sigh before heading over to the wheel. She has no idea how that works but it can't be that hard to keep it steady, and it's not like she'll run into anything.
<Kotono> After several heaves, Old Kamhoff looks up. He's pale and sweating, "Never fucking be-urgk!" He leans back over, throwing up again.
<Lucy> "Could you fetch Mister Bolethon, please?" Lucy asks Veren.
* Veren nods and heads to find Bolethon.
<Kotono> It's not hard to fine Bolethon, he's coming out just as Veren goes back. He smoothly goes to take the wheel, as meanwhile Old Kamhoff is sick again. When he looks up, "Ah fuck," he rasps, "Blood. Throwing up fucking blood!" He turns around and gestures, "Isn't life fucking grand?" he asks, before doing a face plant onto the deck.
<Veren > "That is concerning."
* Veren produces his healing wand.
* Veren moves to use it on Kamhoff.
<Lucy> "While normally a cause for concern, you sound as lively as ever, Mister Kamhoff," Lucy notes, staying well clear of the splash area.
<Kotono> OOC: Which wand?
<Veren > OOC: Wand of healing.
<Veren > OOC: One I bought.
<Kotono> OOC: THE CLW one?
<Veren > OOC: Yeah.
<Kotono> OOC: Make a UMD check.

<Kotono> A shot of healing goes through Kamhoff. He doesn't look much better - and what's worse, he looks to have passed out.
* Veren blinks and looks at his wand for a moment before putting it away.
<Lucy> "Hmm, hmm." Lucy checks for magic.
<Veren > "I think we have some issues here. Does anyone have skill with healing?"
<Lucy> "Ah yes. Please be so kind as to fetch Moore to take a look?"
* Veren grunts unapprovingly at being treated like a gofer, but moves to get Moore.
<Kotono> No magic beyond the normal. Whatever this is isn't a magical affliction, at least. OOC: Any ranks in Heal, Lucy?
<Kotono> OOC: I'll move you into #evil in a sec, Veren.
<Lucy> OOC: No
<Kotono> Bolethon glances over in the meantime, "I am glad my path did not involve eating the meat today," he murmurs.
<Lucy> "Ah! So it was in the meat? How silly--" Lucy shakes her head. "Do you have any magic that can help with that?"
<Kotono> "No," Bolethon remarks, "It is a slippery, drooling path ahead." He looks on, "With three shining possibilities"
<Lucy> "Oh? I distinctly believe there are four possibilities, so enlighten me."
<Kotono> "Three shining paths," he repeats, "Do you see them?"
<Lucy> "Tell me the paths you see," Lucy repeats patiently. "Then we compare notes and see if those are the same ones."
<Kotono> OOC: Make a quick diplo check here.

<Kotono> "The light, the dark and the Pepo that is not a Pepo," Bolethon replies, succinctly.
<Lucy> "Ah, so they are different after all," Lucy tells him pleasantly. "Would it be possible to keep the ship stationary while out here?"
<Kotono> Bolethon nods.
<Lucy> "Alright then! I'll go see what's keeping Veren."
<Kotono> OOC: Okay, so your plan is to get Kamhoff in his room and then Moore+Pepo go medicine hunting? Any other plans here?
<Lucy> OOC: Assuming I get told what the issue is, I want to know our timetable and then look for anything useful in Kamhoff's shop for a few hours.
<Moore> OOC: Look for any scrolls of restoration or remove disease too, I suppose.
<Kotono> OOC: Timetable was mentioned in #evil, I can PM paste you real quick if you need it.
<Veren > OOC: Unless survival can yield anything, I don't think I have anything that will help.
<Kotono> OOC: If three of you are looking, I'll just assume the whole group is then for the sake of ease.
<Lucy> OOC: I just want to know it all IC. Anyway, if by early evening nothing happens let me know and I'll propose plan b.
<Kotono> OOC: We can assume you're told IC off-screen as you search. Easy enough. Okay, so you're going to toss his lab? Anything else?
<Pepo> OOC: search the ship stores.
<Kotono> OOC: Okay.
<Veren > OOC: I'll assist with the search.
<Kotono> OOC: One of you, whichever one of you has the best search total, make a search check. (Or is that perception now? Say so if so and assume I said perception there.) Meanwhile, any of you with ranks can make K:N or K:A here too. I may also call for spell craft, depending.

<Kotono> Wow, there's a ton of crap in here! You eventually find a little cubbyhole with a bunch of dried herbs and berries. Lucy and Moore's knowledge lets them identify it as a herbal compound. Mash these up and they'll be useful against disease. There's enough for four doses, with a dose lasting for one day. Also, the party can note Macaron watching. He watches with unusual sharpness, not napping at
<Kotono> all.
* Veren watches the dog as intently as he watches the group.
<Lucy> 'Can you treat disease, dragon dog?' Lucy asks it mentally.
<Kotono> Lucy gets a silent stare back, challenging. He approaches Pepo, tongue out as if to lick the cat.
* Lucy frowns, but then her expression smoothes over as she asks Moore, "How effective would this be, and when may we expect to see results?"
<Moore> Moore inspects the herbs a little closer to try and give her an answer on that. OOC: Any check needed to answer that?
<Pepo> Pepo's hackles raise but he decides to permit it. Kamhoff's in bad shape, may as well spoil his dog a little.
<Kotono> OOC: They'd help resist and fight off the sickness. If it goes well, it'll speed up recovery by a day or two.
<Kotono> Pepo is licked. It feels...good? Not wet and slobbery at all. Soothing, like healing magic on a painful wound. Your mind brushes against another mind, an impression of bringing them here.
<Moore> "It'd help speed their recovery up. I'd say you'd see a result in a day or two. Jetina may need multiple doses since she's already rather sick." Moore responds. "But I can help them with the fortitude needed to fight the illness."
<Pepo> Pepo starts to purr in pleasure. That other cat wasn't so dumb after all! 'The dog can perhaps heal them if he licks them,' he announces to the group. 'They must be brought here, he will not leave.'
<Lucy> "Better keep the two of them together, then," Lucy muses. "Give each a dose, and you can stay there to nurse them back to health. Mister Bolethon thinks the cause is the meat, so we should abstain from that for the time being-- ah yes, let us try it all."
<Kotono> OOC: So plans now, y'all?
<Moore> Moore blinks and looks over at Pepo but shrugs and nods. "Okay. If the rest of you can bring them here I can administer a dose to them both and we can try the... er... dog healing too."
<Veren > OOC: Helpin' with whatever I can.
<Kotono> OOC: Okay.
<Lucy> OOC: The plan is to bring them over and have Moore use his fort-boosting aura by sticking around. Then, we have the dog help out and use the herbs on both to see if it's working.
<Kotono> The party brings both of the ill in. They're both out cold, looking like absolute hell. Veren and Lucy do the carrying, while Moore combines the herbs into the proper doses and Pepo provides morale support. OOC: Go ahead Moore, do your thing first.
<Moore> Moore nods and will administer one dose each to both Kamhoff and to Jetina. "You'll both be fine, don't worry. Don't give up!" He tries to motivate them, hoping they can both hear him as he works.
<Kotono> The medicine is given. It goes down well - at least they don't throw it up right away. Then Macaron approaches Kamhoff first. He reaches up and licks the old man's face, whimpering as he does. His fur begins to tint darker and darker as he does, the color leaving and taking on a deep black hue. Suddenly Kamhoff sits bolt upright, shouting, "Damn right I'm not going to give uppp huuuuuurk!" He
<Kotono> throws up a stream of herb green light, which dissolves before all of you. He then falls back, color returning to his cheeks before your eyes.
* Veren stares at the dog for a moment.
<Lucy> "Impressive and disgusting at the same time," Lucy notes, keeping a safe distance.
<Pepo> 'Good dog,' Pepo thinks, rubbing up against Macaron's side.
<Moore> Moore blinks and decides to see if he can identify what's going on with a detect magic!
<Kotono> OOC: Spellcraft, Moore.
<Moore> roll 1d20+12
* Hatbot --> "Moore rolls 1d20+12 and gets 13." 12 [1d20=1]
<Kotono> There's magic, but Moore can't figure it out at all.
<Veren > "My wish to have a dragon blooded dog increases. Impressive."
<Moore> OOC: after 2 20s I suppose I deserved that.
<Kotono> Macaron leans down and licks Pepo's head, before going to Jetina. He does the same to her, a silver-white glow surrounding his now pitch black fur. Jetina sits up right and vomits out the same light, crying, "No, you're right! I don't want to die uuuughhhhhurk!"
<Lucy> "And seeing it the second time changes nothing."
<Pepo> 'Perhaps the herbs should have been administered second?' the cat speculates.
<Moore> Moore shakes his head. "Magic can do anything, I guess."
<Kotono> Jetina falls back, color restored but out cold before her head hits the ground.
<Lucy> 'Hard to say,' Lucy admits. 'Mister Kamhoff should know enough to tell us once he wakes up.'
<Kotono> Macaron promptly paces around both of them, studying them. He then wanders a bit away and curls up on the ground.
<Lucy> "Alright. Please stay with them, Moore? And keep an eye on the dog's fur? It might be interesting to see the rate it changes." As for her part, she figures she might as well turn in now.
<Moore> "Absolutely." Moore says with a nod.
<Kotono> "G'dog," Kamhoff mutters, "Damn, where was that the last time I had the galloping shits?" He sits up onto his elbows, "What happened?"
<Pepo> 'Too much salt,' Pepo intones mentally at him.
<Moore> Moore smiles at Kamhoff. "You and Jetina seem to have been poisoned by some food. Er... somehow Macaron got rid of it... uh... I'm not really sure how, though..."
<Veren > "We found herbs to assist with it."
<Lucy> "Yes, we used some of your herbal remedies," Lucy voices, pausing at the door. "It seemed unneeded."
<Kotono> "Well hell," Kamhoff mutters, staggering to his feet. "Good dog. Thanks, all of you."
<Lucy> "So it wasn't needed after all? Good to know, even if in retrospect." Lucy nods to herself, and leaves.
<Kotono> OOC: Ready to move along then, y'all?
<Pepo> OOC: sure
<Lucy> OOC: yes
<Veren > OOC: Yep.
<Kotono> Another day or two passes. Jetina passes it resting while Kamhoff recovers. Soon enough you come to another little island. This one is a patch of greenery dotted with trees, with a few small ponds. Unremarkable, but it's notable for another lightskimmer ship being docked as you approach. This ship is tall and has the emblem of a green snake on its flag.
<Lucy> Spending her time on the deck again, Lucy decides to take a closer look at the other ship and anyone near it.
<Pepo> Is it the same one that passed them before? Pepo tries to figure that out as he watches it from up on up on the railing.
<Kotono> It isn't. That was a green teardrop, as Pepo recalls.
<Moore> OOC: Would Moore recall if that particular symbol was used in Rossalund at all?
* Veren eyes the island, trying to decide if it has enough cover to hide in.
<Kotono> The ship's manned by a motley assortment of humanoids and the like. Things you know and you don't - and standing on the deck on a chair that's closer to a throne? A woman with a veil on. She looks beautiful and almost like carved porcelain, but her half hidden hair is snakes instead of actual hair.  OOC: You don't recall it buuuuut that one there's pretty obvious too.
<Kotono> Veren can see there's cover to hide if he likes, though since your ship is approaching, subtlety is tricky.
<Pepo> 'Are we going to stop?' Pepo asks Kamhoff, moving closer to the wheel.
<Lucy> "Ah, so it appears one of the medusas escaped," Lucy muses. "How about we keep going and stay out of the way?"
<Moore> "Or maybe they were on some sort of trip..." Moore says. He nods over to Lucy. "But I agree with Miss Lucy's sentiment."
* Veren smirks at Lucy.
<Veren > "I thought you wanted to acquire a ship of your own?"
<Lucy> "Our crew is too small right now."
<Kotono> "I was planning on stopping, but we can get by if not," Kamhoff strokes his chin, "I'd rather not get into a fight with one of those snakes, personally."
<Kotono> Gesturing about, "I don't know about you, but I'd rather not have statues on deck."
<Lucy> "It would waste expensive scrolls to fix, and lacks any merit."
<Pepo> 'Agreed.'
<Moore> Moore nods. "Hopefully they just let us go by without stopping us."
<Kotono> Thus the ship passes by. The other ship watches, but no one does much of anything. They seem content not to pick a fight as you glide by, 100ft past.
<Kotono> OOC: Anyone going to do anything or good with moving along?
<Moore> OOC: Good with moving along if they aren't going to try and kill us.

<Kotono> A handful of days passes. It's a listless sort of day, with everyone on the ship's deck. Even Jetina, looking somewhat better and able to walk on her own. A silent interlude is broken by her voice, calling, "So what do you all don on here to pass the hours?"
<Lucy> "Research into the arcane."
<Veren > "Train my blade and foot work."
<Pepo> 'Sleep, manage the fish and rats, mark my territory.'
<Moore> Moore considers for a moment. "I wander and see if I can help anyone with anything."
<Veren > "When you're feeling up for it, since I am the least busy, I can help you up to the deck for some fresh air."
<Lucy> "Another set of eyes going over the material would come in handy."
<Kotono> "That all sounds fun," Jetina admits, "But what about fun and games? Leisure activities, sports, anything like that."
* Veren shrugs.
<Pepo> 'I set the rats free and chase them before I eat them?' Pepo offers. He won't talk about the times he wakes up confused and gets into fights with his limbs.
<Lucy> "I like to activate strange magical devices for fun," Lucy muses. "And bake cookies. But we don't have the right supplies for that."
<Moore> "I don't think we've really had the opportunity to explore things like that." Moore says.
<Veren > "We haven't spent much time on land, in general. Not enough to acquire games of entertainment."
<Lucy> "Reading is a game you can play all by yourself," Lucy points out.
<Veren > "I have no problems reading, but I am not a mage. The books you and Kamhoff have would be of very limited use to me."
<Pepo> 'Turning the pages is hard,' Pepo complains.
<Kotono> Pepo gets a long look, Jetina sighing. Thereafter she turns to the others, "What we need is something to pass the time."
<Lucy> "Sex works if you are bored," Lucy suggests. "It shouldn't even damage the boat the way sports inevitably would."
* Veren raises an eyebrow.
<Veren > "Offering, then, are we?"
<Moore> "I'm pretty good at telling stor....ies...?" Moore is taken a bit by surprise at what Lucy suggests.
<Lucy> "I still have plenty of reading to do so I'm not bored at all," Lucy assures Veren.
* Veren grins.
<Lucy> "Some people also like to cause large explosions if they are bored," she muses.
<Veren > "I am more... quiet than that, typically."
<Lucy> "Ah yes. You train your blade by your lonesome."
<Kotono> The entire party gets long looks, Lucy in particular. Jetina's color goes south all over again, "Ahem. Clearly you need more suggestions!" she says cheerfully. "Say Kamhoff," she calls over to him, "Do you have dice, cards or any gaming materials at all?"
<Moore> Moore snaps his fingers. "I knew I forgot to get something when we were in Freeport! I do need some dice for something..."
<Kotono> "Yeah, somewhere in my lab," Kamhoff looks over, "They're in a blue box."
<Lucy> "If we must play a game, how about one where each takes upon a different role to act out?" Lucy proposes. Any of the conventional ones are too boring since she can easily cheat with them, and has nothing worthwhile to gamble over.
<Kotono> "You mean putting on a play?" Jetina hmms a little bit, "Or a production?"
<Lucy> "Yes, but more along the lines of improvisation, and I think we could skip the props."
<Kotono> "Huh." A shrug follows, "Better than your other idea."
* Lucy gives her a hooded look.
<Kotono> That look gets returned, Jetina crossing her arms. "What?"
<Lucy> "Vow of celibacy?" Lucy guesses.
<Kotono> "What? No! I'm saving myself for marriage, of course." Jetina retorts, "Like a proper lady."
* Lucy nods. "More words to say the same thing," she agrees happily. "Well then, shall we play a game? You must pick a theme."
<Veren > "She is basically a noble. Is that not common?"
<Lucy> "Oh yes! Nobles often use more words than necessary to convey their point!"
<Pepo> Pepo just lies down and watches the others talk, the pursuit or avoidance of sex a mystery to him, and the game not sounding like something he'd participate in. But watching and listening provides a diversion of its own.
<Kotono> "I do not!" Jetina calls, as time begins to pass...OOC: This is a good pause point since the session's nearly over.  We'll resume next week since Neph's away tomorrow.
This is not the greatest post in the world, no... this is just a tribute.
