<El-Cideon> In a dismal side tunnel branching off the main cavern around Howler's Crag, Stephanie's attempt to eavesdrop on a gang of demons has gone somewhat awry. At the first sound of hostility from the alarmed demons, Vigilia blinks out of existence and reappears down the hall at Stephanie's side!
<El-Cideon> OOC: Steph & a demon are up
<El-Cideon> The wounded demon first opts to improve its chances of survival by summoning up an array of images to distract attackers!
<El-Cideon> roll 1d4+4
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d4+4 --> 6,0[ 1d4=4 ]4,0{8}
* El-Cideon changes topic to 'Current planar traits: -2 on CHA-based checks for lawful characters | Vigilia (26) > vrock (8MI) = Steph (22) > Rosey (21) > vrock (17) > goat demon (15) > Julia (13) > vrock (11) > Fran (10) > Tiel = ??? (7)_''
<Steph> "Nnnghgh!" grumbles Stephanie, kicking off the ground and flinging herself at one of the vrocks perched up on high. A pair of swipes from her knives follows, along with a kick straight to the face!
<Steph> roll 1d20+19
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d20+19 --> 6,0[ 1d20=6 ]4,0{25}
<Steph> roll 1d20+20

<El-Cideon> OOC: first two hit
<Steph> roll 1d6+9+2d6+6d6
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d6+9+2d6+6d6 --> 6,0[ 1d6=4 2d6=5 6d6=13 ]4,0{31}
<Steph> roll 1d4+1d8+6+6d6
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d4+1d8+6+6d6 --> 6,0[ 1d4=1 1d8=3 6d6=21 ]4,0{31}
<El-Cideon> OOC: bypass any DR with that weapon?
<Steph> OOC: The first weapon is good, the second is cold iron
<Steph> OOC: the 1d8 is negative energy
<El-Cideon> As Stephanie tears up a demon, Rosemund runs up into place next to Vigilia to see what all the fuss is about. Then Stephanie's opponent retaliates: it shakes its body and a cloud of vile spores saturate the air around it; then, it inhales deeply and bellows out a painful, earsplitting shriek!
<El-Cideon> roll 1d8 damage and roll fort for the screech
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d8 1,0damage and roll fort for the screech --> 6,0[ 1d8=2 ]4,0{2}
<Steph> roll 1d20+17
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d20+17 --> 6,0[ 1d20=15 ]4,0{32}
<El-Cideon> OOC: pass~
<El-Cideon> OOC: note 1d4 damage from spores for 10 next rounds, though
<Steph> OOC: But I'm biased to forget it!
* El-Cideon changes topic to 'Current planar traits: -2 on CHA-based checks for lawful characters | Vigilia (26) > vrock (8MI) = Steph (22, spores 10 rds) > Rosey (21) > vrock (17) > goat demon (15) > Julia (13) > vrock (11) > Fran (10) > Tiel = ??? (7)_''
<El-Cideon> The towering goat demon kicks the hulking, furry shape behind it--"Wake up slughead, we got home invasion happening here!"--then it charges around the circumference of the room to stab its massive ranseur once at Stephanie.
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+27 charge
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d20+27 1,0charge --> 6,0[ 1d20=20 ]4,0{47}
<Steph> OOC: How can it do that? I flew up.
<Steph> OOC: Weren't the vrocks stationed higher?
<El-Cideon> OOC: Yes, but gravity on Pandemonium is wack. You adhere to any surface, really.
<Steph> OOC: Oh, duh.
<Steph> OOC: Clearly, that hits.
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+27 crit?
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d20+27 1,0crit? --> 6,0[ 1d20=10 ]4,0{37}
<Steph> OOC: It also crits! I think I need to spend a hero point or something here
<El-Cideon> OOC: maybe? Decide quick!
<Steph> OOC: Can I use it to run away in time, or at least turn this into a normal hit instead of a crit?
<El-Cideon> OOC: I'm okay with the latter, yes.
<Steph> OOC: Let's do that, then.
<El-Cideon> roll 3d6+13 normal hit!
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 3d6+13 1,0normal hit! --> 6,0[ 3d6=14 ]4,0{27}
<El-Cideon> A last-second evasion turns what could've been a gory charge into a glancing blow--yet still a painful one, given the size of the weapon.
<El-Cideon> OOC: Julia is up
<Julia> Rather than run around the corner and make herself a target without being able to actually do anything, Julia starts to summon something else that can be a target!
<Julia> OOC: summon undead iv
<El-Cideon> Meanwhile, the third vrock mimics the first and conjures up an aura of illusion.
<El-Cideon> roll 1d4+4 MI
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d4+4 1,0MI --> 6,0[ 1d4=2 ]4,0{6}

<El-Cideon> OOC: Fran is up
* Franceska takes a step closer before she thinks better of it, and then she begins to summon a massive earth elemental!
<El-Cideon> The little archon floats forward to see what all the fuss is about--but lingers a little behind its companion for now, conscious of its own fragility in light of all these lumbering monsters.
<El-Cideon> There's a deep, irritated grunt and a faint stirring from the massive shape at the back of the cave.
<El-Cideon> Vigilia focuses for a split-second and then, suddenly blazing with searing, supernatural flame, blurs forward to punch once at Stephanie's attacker.
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+20
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d20+20 --> 6,0[ 1d20=17 ]4,0{37}

<El-Cideon> OOC: first vrock and Steph are up
<El-Cideon> roll 1d4 spore damage
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d4 1,0spore damage --> 6,0[ 1d4=1 ]4,0{1}
* El-Cideon changes topic to 'Current planar traits: -2 on CHA-based checks for lawful characters | Vigilia (26) > vrock (8MI) = Steph (22, spores 9 rds) > Rosey (21) > vrock (17) > goat demon (15) > Julia (13) > vrock (11, 6MI) > Fran (10) > Tiel = ??? (7)_''
<El-Cideon> Rather than get tangled up in the melee around Stephanie, the first vrock opts to turn and charge one of the new arrivals--Rosemund for now!
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+15+2
<Rei-chan> 6,0El-Cideon rolled :6,0 1d20+15+2 --> 6,0[ 1d20=11 ]4,0{28}
<El-Cideon> But the demon's claw merely scrapes across her armor.
<Steph> Stephanie decides to finish off the first vrock, but then she turns her attention to the lumbering goat-demon that's sure to cause her trouble forthwith!
<Steph> roll 1d20+19

<Steph> roll 1d20+18
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d20+18 --> 6,0[ 1d20=11 ]4,0{29}
<Steph> OOC: I'll redirect my attacks at the goat dude if I managed to kill the vrock.
<Steph> OOC: Except I likely can't since he has a reach weapon. Alas!
<El-Cideon> OOC: four hits vs vrock. And yes, reach weapon.
<Julia> OOC: you can 5-ft step in a full attack though
<Steph> roll 1d6+2d6+9
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d6+2d6+9 --> 6,0[ 1d6=1 2d6=5 ]4,0{15}

<Steph> roll 1d4+6
<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d4+6 --> 6,0[ 1d4=2 ]4,0{8}
<El-Cideon> OOC: which of those break DR?
<Steph> OOC: Presumably the negative energy breaks DR, and the first one.
<Steph> OOC: I am guessing it is DR/good, so this likely amounts to 15+2+7 = 24 damage. Lacking sneak attack is sadface.
<El-Cideon> OOC: correct. On both accounts.
<El-Cideon> Stephanie cuts into her foe again and again, but fails to kill it yet. Rosemund raises her holy mace and brings it down twice upon her attacker!
<El-Cideon> roll 1d20+15

<El-Cideon> The demon grunts in surprise and pain as both illusions and supernatural armor both fail to protect it from Rosemund's blessed weapon.
<El-Cideon> Stephanie's bleeding, faltering foe attempts to get some of its own back with a flurry of attacks!

<El-Cideon> As its companions manifestly fail to make any headway against their own targets, the towering goat demon turns to assess his own attacker. "Long way from home, hellspawn!" it says in a sudden burst of rage. "Let me send you back there!"

<El-Cideon> The mummy catches one last false image in parting! With this foe gone, the cavern echoes no longer with the sounds of battle, only the heavy breathing of one demon too lazy, disinterested or tired to intervene.
<El-Cideon> OOC: free act. Steph and Julia both have spores growing on them, though.
<Franceska> "Do you want to kill that demon as well?" Franceska asks Rosemund, gesturing at the distant furry thing.
<Julia> "Wait, I can do something. But Rosemund, please a little help with these spores?" Julia asks, moving towards Stephanie so they can both be fixed.
<El-Cideon> Rosemund prefers first to administer a blessing to her friends to dispel the vile growth of abyssal vines plaguing her friends! This done, she turns back to Franceska. "I am not sure. It looks as though it would be a lot of trouble...and it is not doing much right now."
<Julia> "Well... nevermind that actually. But spores first," Julia says on reflection.
<@Steph> Stephanie sighs with relief once the irritating growths vanish. "I don't need hair growing all over my body," she declares. "And, uh, I don't know. That thing... eats people? We're people," she notes, turning back to it and trying to figure out what it is.

<El-Cideon> The slain goat demon is recognized as a bulezau, a common representative of abyssal infantry. The bull demon's specific classification and nature are outside of your learning, however.
<@Steph> "Well, let's kill it. It's at least guilty of conspiracy to murder. Or proceeds of crime?" She frowns. "Eating humans is a crime no matter who does it or where, though," she decides.
<Julia> "I'm content with killing it," Julia agrees. She needs to interrogate one of the dead and that takes time. So the mummy is ordered towards the demon, ready to attack on whatever signal is given.
<El-Cideon> "Who is to say it won't just run into town and eat everybody it finds now that no one's bringing it people to it?" Tiel agrees. Vigilia takes a moment to focus on healing her wounds first (albeit only partially).
<@Steph> Stephanie snorts. "You mean, the demons were doing a public service by only feeding it a few people here and there?"
<El-Cideon> "That is not at all what I meant!" the archon protests.
<El-Cideon> Rosemund takes a moment to summon up an aura of righteous strength for herself, if the group means to continue with their extermination.
<Franceska> "Not to rush, but the spell will end in a minute," Franceska notes as her elemental dives under the blade and positions itself properly next to the slumbering monster.

<@Steph> OOC: oh, add 6 to that last attack.
<@Steph> OOC: I mean 9.
<El-Cideon> OOC: which gets past DR?
<@Steph> OOC: The first two.
<El-Cideon> With a sonorous groan of dismay, the massive demon slumps in place from these killing blows and immediately begins to decoalesce into the sludge of primal chaos that birthed it.
<El-Cideon> OOC: free act again
<Franceska> The elemental soon joins it in discorporating at Franceska's dismissive gesture.
<@Steph> Stephanie slumps herself, though her wounds do start to promptly close. "I'm sure this was worth it," she mutters.
<Julia> The mummy vanishes with a groan and Julia smiles. "Good job everyone. Now, I'm going to interrogate that vrock, if nobody minds waiting a few minutes?"
<El-Cideon> "Stephanie!" Rosemund cries at sight of her friend's grievous wounds. "Do you need help?" she offers, even with full knowledge Stephanie can heal on her own.
<@Steph> "Ah, no, no, it's okay, Rosemund," replies Stephanie, sitting down. "I have to pay an appropriate price for my reckless deeds."
<El-Cideon> The vrock's corpse has gone the way of its bullish companion, but the goat demon at least has left an intact corpse to play with.
<Julia> Frowning at that, Julia goes to the goat and casts speak with dead.

<El-Cideon> The slain demon stubbornly refuses Julia's efforts to probe its mind!
<El-Cideon> Franceska finds that the demon's weapon and a ring it wears are both magical in nature--the rest of the treasure herein, it turns out, is simply mundane coins and jewels.
<Julia> How unfortunate. Julia looks somewhat sulky in the aftermath of that failure.
* Franceska leaves the mundane treasure to Stephanie as she gathers the magical portions.
<@Steph> "This is pretty unfortunate," reflects Stephanie, always happy to scoop more valuable jewels into her bag. "The bones aren't even identifiable now."
<El-Cideon> "It is a shame that two of them got away," Tiel chirps. "But maybe they will stay away because we killed the big ones?"
<Julia> Cheering herself up, Julia flicks her wand of desecrate at the corpse, before popping an expensive black onyx into its mouth. Intoning, "Rise from your grave!" she casts animate dead to turn it into a much more compliant zombie!

<@Steph> "It really is. They'll just go find someplace else to mess up," admits Stephanie. "But that's no reason to be down. I mean, there's infinite demons, so if that bothers you you're never going to be able to sleep at night when you realise how irrelevant our actions really are."

<El-Cideon> "I don't know if that is the cheeriest attitude," Tiel chides Stephanie. "Every person should be happy about whatever small improvements she can make on the world around her!"
<El-Cideon> "But, ah, are you sure you should be doing that?" the archon says hesitantly as Julia raises their recently defeated foe.
<Franceska> "I'm not terribly happy that the magic of this ring escapes me. But I will be happier once we leave this plane."
<@Steph> "Oh, er, yes, well, of course I agree with you," mutters Stephanie, before reaching to drink from her flask. "Yes, um, let's go. I'd better drop by that inn before we're off."
<Franceska> "If you must," Franceska says with a long-suffering sigh. "I will wait at the ship."
<Julia> "Oh yes, he'll be much more helpful this way," Julia assures the archon. "Follow and defend me," she orders it, since the wind will make giving orders hard once they're outside. "Oh, and pick up your polearm there, that's a good boy Shenkin."
<El-Cideon> A quick trip back to town (with earplugs back in place, of course) is uneventful. The Last Laugh is mostly as you left it, though the weapon peddler is not immediately evident.
<@Steph> Alas. But Stephanie had better head over to Hiroko and explain the most likely fate of her late paramour in as sombre a tone as she can muster. No doubt the blood all over her clothes is of assistance in providing the appropriate mood.
<El-Cideon> Hiroko looks excited just for having someone to talk to after a month of being stuck in this same room. "Oh wow, looks you found some excitement out there?" she infers.
<Julia> Julia leaves Shenkin by the door as she goes to grab another drink after all that excitement.
<@Steph> "Yes. It looks like demons were abducting petitioners from the tower," replies Stephanie. "We tracked them down, killed a few, chased the rest off. But, um, nobody was alive at their lair."
<El-Cideon> Rosemund meanwhile takes advantage of the break to patch Vigilia back up to full health!
<El-Cideon> Hiroko sinks in place, figuratively and literally. "Well, I kinda figured a while ago he wasn't coming back. Did you, uh, did you find him? Or I guess what was left?"
<@Steph> "Only traces remained," replies Stephanie. "I'm sorry."
<El-Cideon> Hiroko reflexively runs a hand through her hair, which has the usual effect of phasing disturbingly right through her head. "Alright, well, thanks anyway. Hey, you didn't have to look at all, I should give you some kinda reward but, you know. Oh wait, Slope's got my stuff in storage. Hey, at least I can get everybody a round on my tab."
<@Steph> "Nah, no reward needed!" replies Stephanie, waving her hands. "Not even the drinks. But hey, we're probably going to be bouncing around a few planes. We could give you a lift to Azure, or the prime? It doesn't look like you'll be finding much here." She claps her hands. "I'll get Alice to tell your fortune! That should give you a hint!"
<El-Cideon> "Hey, I'd be more than happy to get out of this dum--err, surprisingly hospitable dive," she quickly amends for the host's sensibilities. "I dunno how, though! I mean, I'm scared to go up there like I am now, what if I just blow away into little pieces? I guess, um, I could probably stuff myself into a container or something." She decides. "Hey, get an empty wine bottle, we'll try that."
<@Steph> "Um, I've got this hip flask, smells slightly of vodka."
<El-Cideon> "Oh, vodka'll do fine!" she says brightly. "But hey, don't go thinking I'd climb into a bottle for just anybody, alright? You just seem like good people."
<@Steph> "Aww, thanks!" replies Stephanie, producing her flask. "Sure you don't want me to rinse it out first?"
<El-Cideon> "Nah, I'll be much less bored this way. I think. I can't drink anything anymore, but maybe the fumes will work. All my stuff's packed up behind the bar, you just take it with you when you go? See you on the other side, wherever we're going." Like the reverse of a genie springing from a bottle, Hiroko compresses herself into the flask with little apparent trouble.
<@Steph> Stephanie blinks. Couldn't she use this for some kind of excellent scam? Smiling gleefully to herself, she goes to pick up the girl's belongings before hauling them back to the boat.
<El-Cideon> Hiroko's collected equipment comprises some rather sensible camping gear, light armor and weapons, arrows, and a not inconsiderable traveling supply of spiritous beverages.
<Julia> After a drink, Julia has a look at the ring that eluded Franceska's observations.

<El-Cideon> After a quick trip home to rest up and deposit a cloudgirl in hopefully safer environs, the group returns to Pandemonium to follow their directions to the Skirl. The Styx is easily located just outside town, and following it in the ship for the better part of a day allows you an uneventful voyage--fortunately traveling by air lets you avoid some of the landbound hazards you can see pass below you, living stalactites that wave ominous tendrils at the hull of your ship in passing, roving bands of raving lunatics...the natives don't look intimately familiar with any decent way of making friends. In any case, you find your target as advertised--the cavern slopes downward suddenly, sharply, in a manner the sees the river's forward momentum sending it plunging forward to the next layer in a cataract. Above this waterfall, sunken into a depression in the opposite cavern floor, is a luminous mass of swirling cloud some hundred feet across.
<@Steph> "I wonder what keeps the madmen together," Stephanie voices.
<Julia> "Maybe they suffer from a group delerium?" Julia wonders, looking over at the swirl and bracing herself.
<El-Cideon> "I guess we go in?" Rosemund presumes, not seeing anyone loitering helpfully outside of it.
<@Steph> "The boat should fit, I suppose..."
<Franceska> "How delightful."
<@Steph> "Is it?"
<Franceska> "No."
<Julia> "We don't go through, the Skirl is supposed to be around here, not on the other side," Julia reminds everyone.
<@Steph> "Oh."
<Julia> "Lets just go over and have a look around the clouds. It probably blends in," she suggests.
<El-Cideon> A wail reaches out from the cloud, as if in response to the name--it shrieks in a chorus of wailing winds directed to produce syllables but sharply reminiscent of the everlasting scream of Pandemonium itself. "You seek answers?" is the simple query and presumption. When you drift closer, the faint silhouette of a female form can be discerned at the windstorm's edge.
<@Steph> "We do!" exclaims Stephanie, peering at the edge of the wind. "We seek the prisoner known as Phibous Liramar, held here in Pandemonium!"
<El-Cideon> The windstorm's howl rises to a roar, as though some internal consultation were taking place, and the din almost seems fit to overtake the ship's magical protections before it settles down. "I hear every word that is torn away in the winds of this world," the entity proclaims. It doesn't sound especially proud or happy about this condition. "And I know all that the winds of Pandemonium touch, whether I wish it or not. I know of this man you seek. I know where the winds took him."
<Julia> "Then what is your price for the knowledge?" Julia calls over.
<El-Cideon> "Reason," the Skirl sends out in an eager cacaphony.
<Julia> "We require his knowledge, and maybe his death," Julia calls back, assuming it means their reason for seeking him.
<El-Cideon> "Reason," the Skirl explains with tortured deliberation, "is *my* desire."
<@Steph> "Do we have any of that to spare?" asks Stephanie, seriously.
<Julia> "I... uh, don't think so," Julia admits. This could end up like that fog in the Abyss...
<Franceska> "Can Shenkin spare some reason?"
<Julia> "I think it's all gone, I'm afraid."
<@Steph> "Maybe we should try one of the others, then."
<El-Cideon> "The mindless are of no use to me," the Skirl protests. "I am not of this world, yet here I reside. The balance between madness and insight is oft a precarious one. You think that the winds of Pandemonium are easily conversed with? That they eagerly give to me their secrets? I *need* some of your mortal sense to retain my own identity."
<@Steph> "Umm. Do you want to, you know, leave?" asks Stephanie, uncertainly.
<Julia> "How about I summon a demon and she can eat its mind?" Julia whispers to the others.
<El-Cideon> "I shall not leave you maddened," the Skirl promises, amending, "unless you are exceptionally weak of mind to begin with."
<Franceska> "Best use of them."
<@Steph> "Demons don't have much reason either. You should summon a devil."
<El-Cideon> "You shouldn't summon demons or devils for any cause!" Tiel protests loudly at this plan.
<Julia> "It's better than having our minds eaten," Julia replies. "But if anyone can cast magic circle against chaos, good, or law, I could summon an outsider of that alignment instead. Oh, or an elemental, how about that?"
<@Steph> "Uh, well, on the other hand, the archon has a point." Stephanie sighs. "Hey, we can't just summon up decent things to bargain away their brains! Let's go see if the other guys can make us a better offer."
<Franceska> "Summon something from Limbo, no one cares about those sorts."
<El-Cideon> "My nature," the Skirl says with an obvious forced effort at focus and calm, "is precarious. Should I draw sense from fiends, I cannot guarantee my good intent would remain untainted."
<Julia> "I do feel bad for her though, I want to help... just not enough to make myself pass the line from 'endearingly eccentric' to 'disturbingly strange'," Julia says, sounding pained.
<El-Cideon> "I do not think there is harm in waiting to see what the other oracles would ask for before agreeing to what sounds like something of a crazy bargain," Rosemund agrees with Stephanie in something of a stage whisper.
* Franceska is not about to lose her mind over an elf, and observes quietly.
<@Steph> "Then let's go with that. Hey, maybe we can try looking for one of those books? You know, the books that make you smart."
<El-Cideon> "That is the function of most books!" Rosemund points out.
<@Steph> "That's, um, I guess that's technically true. But it's not true of books that are interesting."
<Julia> "Well, I guess we'll go shop around. Sorry," Julia shrugs apologetically at the Skirl.
<El-Cideon> "I will remain here," the Skirl guarantees with commendable grace, "forever. When other means fail you, recall where to return."
<Franceska> That actually sounds agreeable to Franceska, as it gives them time to knock out the next imbecile to cross them and bring it here.
<El-Cideon> ~
