<El-Cideon> The disused torture chamber is left with several battered and broken mechanical servants to liven up the decor, and the victorious party has another secure door standing between them and progress.
<El-Cideon> "Is everyone alright?" Rosemund asks. "Does anyone need healing before we press on?"
<Steph> "'s just a scratch," replies Stephanie. "That door trapped?"
<Franceska> "I just look hideous like this, I'm perfectly fine," Franceska responds, for her part.
<Julia> The door's unfortunately too small for Julia's minions to go through, so she'll just have to leave Scarlet and Bedford here to cover a retreat if they're that unlucky. "I'm fine," she adds, not that Rosemund could heal her anyway.
<El-Cideon> "It might be just a scratch, but we should be at our best when we know that we are soon walking another fight!" Rosemund insists, casting a blessing over Stephanie.

<Steph> Stephanie drums her fingers on the animate shield that has, up until now, inconspicuously floated around her. "Aww, you're always right, Rosey!"
<El-Cideon> "Maybe not always," Rosemund modestly. "I will accept most of the time."
<El-Cideon> Crier casts a brief spell and examines the door for Stephanie. "I think it's okay."
<Steph> This noted, Stephanie steps up to de-secure the security door!

<Rei-chan> 6,0Steph rolled :6,0 1d20+25 --> 6,0[ 1d20=3 ]4,0{28}
<El-Cideon> Stephanie's skills fail to meet Franceska's standards, which is to say that they fully meet her expectations and manifestly fail to open the door.
<Steph> Grinding her teeth, Stephanie is regrettably willing to keep trying in order to avenge her precarious honor.
<Steph> OOC: I'll just take 10, fine
* Franceska looks disappointed, but that might be just the way a gelugon always appears to others.
<El-Cideon> After some extensive effort and perhaps withering expressions, the door clicks open! On the other side is an old prison round, a large square room ringed with metal doors. Across the room, an elven enchanter briefly familiar to the group from their meeting at the party raps irritably on another closed door, turning around to face the party with evident irritation when there's no response. Shazzred's entourage is eclectic: a well-dressed imp perches upon his shoulder; a huge, smoldering fire elemental who could only have been summoned into the room rather than walked into it stands protectively by his side; and three misplaced woodland creatures in flattering dress stand by--a nymph, a dryad, and a pixie--each of them somewhat scaly-skinned and looking to bear some fiendish taint, the dryad in particular possessing a black and stony complexion. "You're here for Krae," Shazzred observes stiffly. "He seems to have no further need for his servants. I'm quite prepared to walk away if you'll not make any trouble for me."
<Franceska> "Your friends can walk away, but you'll just have to die," Franceska responds matter of factly.
<Julia> "Even if we're here for Krae, you're the sort of person it's just a privilege to end," Julia adds, tapping her pocket to signal Thing. Now's the time!
<Steph> "Do the noble thing!"
<El-Cideon> He sighs, seemingly more out of impatience or irritation than real concern. "If that's how it is," he says.

<Julia> "Now I have to save my special technique for Krae," Julia mutters disconsolately, while Thing is no doubt devastated at losing his chance to shine. She could use it on the fey but they're probably just brainwashed victims, so she takes care of that with a targeted greater dispel magic on the nymph first of all.
<Julia> OOC: how many spells on her?

<Julia> Meanwhile Thing sullenly flies down to rejoin Julia, where he grins at the dryad he helped capture.
<El-Cideon> The dryad strolls over to its new master and obediently awaits further orders.
<Franceska> "Let's kill Krae and go home," Franceska suggests. "No time like the present."
<Julia> "Maybe he's behind that door Shazzred was knocking on?" Julia suggests, availing herself of further healing.

<El-Cideon> "Right," Jill agrees, walking over to the door. She chants a brief prayer to bolster her own strength, then suggests, "Any further preparations anyone needs to make, I'd guess now's the time."
<Steph> Stephanie shrugs, and taps herself with her wand again. "I kinda want to know what his whole plan was. Like, we were pretty transparent," she remarks, tapping herself with her wand again.

<Franceska> "It's true, you were."
<El-Cideon> "You can ask," Jill allows. "He likes to talk."
<Steph> "Well, duh. Who'd want to actually fit in with devils?" Stephanie walks towards the door as well and sets to opening it!
<Franceska> "Scarlet, apparently."
<Steph> OOC: I shall take on on obligatory unlockery. also, this time, I bet I explode
<Steph> "And look where that got her. A lesson everyone should learn."
* Franceska snorts. "I suppose. So what is the lesson, again? Never be on the same plane as us?"
<El-Cideon> Stephanie finds that this door offers no resistance at all. It opens up onto a grim, dank room, dimly torchlit, essentially a lip of stone overlooking a vast boneyard that stretches away into unseen depths. All species and sizes might be discerned therein by the knowledgeable observer. Krae stands calmly looking out over the field of bones, turning to address you as you arrive. "Such a mundane betrayal," he says. "I should expect as much from any of my own kin." By his side, a fearsome, extensively battlescarred old hellhound gnaws on a monstrous femur; to Krae's right, a golem seeminsgly constructed solely of hangman's nooses stands silently.
<Julia> Julia's eyes widen at the sight of so *much* material, and she quickly starts looking for the most monstrous thing that she can animate nearby.
<Franceska> "To be perfectly fair, this is not a betrayal," Franceska decides to correct him. "We came here to retrieve something, so there was no intention of ever siding with you in the first place. And we only decided to kill you as an added condition, although I can't say anyone will shed any tears about this."
<Steph> "Would it have been polite to wait a year first or something? We have a timetable, you know."
<El-Cideon> Julia sees she's got a good thirty feet ahead of her before she can dive into the bone pit to play, but at a glance there's a tremendous variety of humanoid skeletons mixed in with specimens of most common demon and devil varieties of ranks below Krae himself.
<El-Cideon> Krae shrugs at Stephanie. He seems less interested in Franceska. "I expected something sooner or later. It was evident that you did not belong here."
<Steph> "So how come you didn't seize the initiative? We just killed like all your subordinates," replies Stephanie. "Does this whole thing just not matter to you?"
<Julia> Well... nothing really worthwhile except as a distraction then.
<El-Cideon> "They can be replaced," he says apathetically. "There is no end of ambitious aspirants to positions under an influential lord of Hell. Once you have known a few of them, you begin to realize that they are all essentially the same." He sounds curiously aged as he acknowledges this. "Of course, some of you are more difficult to replace than others," he admits, with a nod toward Jill.
<Franceska> "There is the unfortunate snag of you dying and not being able to do that," Franceska notes.
<Steph> "That's really what we're here for, you know." Stephanie gestures towards Krae with a knife. "We are obligated to kill you, for justice and so on, but it's not like I believe that'll actually change anything significant. Always more cornugons and pit fiends out there."
<El-Cideon> Krae continues to ignore Franceska's jibes and respond purely to the rest of the group. "Yes, it's a shame, isn't it? When you deal with any devil, you know exactly what manner of being you associate with. Our natures are fixed for us. I believe this is why we lost your little war."
<Julia> "So that's why you surround yourself with mortal lieutenants?" Julia asks, admittedly curious.
<El-Cideon> "They're so much more fascinating, aren't they?" he enthuses. "Tell me, what is the average baatezu's prevailing impression of a mortal's worth?"
<Steph> "Nothing, despite all evidence to the contrary. Oh!" Stephanie snaps her fingers. "But that erinyes figured I was her big ticket, heh. She was all servile, it was kinda funny but sad. Didn't even seem like a put on."
<El-Cideon> "Fodder," Jill agrees firmly with Stephanie's estimate.
<Julia> "I'd say currency," Julia puts her two coppers in. "You don't value a gold coin, you value what it can be exchanged for. It's the same with souls here, isn't it?"
<El-Cideon> Krae nods. "You're a resource as any other, yes?" He inhales dramatically and proceeds with an air of recollection. "When I was much younger, possessed of a less prestigious form and laboring under masters of my own, I conceived that there must be a more efficient way to harvest from the mortal world. You are simple, inferior creatures, every devil is told, beneath consideration save as a tool to further schemes. I thought, in those days, that to best further my own position--and our Great and Noble Cause, of course--that I should best be served to understand how these insects functioned, within their minds. I thought, there must be some ultimate method, if I could unravel the mortal equation, I should soon stand above my peers in all affairs relating to mortal recruitment. So I undertook...behavioral experiments," he casts a brief glance behind him, "to discern how the typical mortal reacts under the most extreme stress, to find how best to suborn their convictions. But the troubling fact was, there were always exceptions. There were always those who would maintain hold over their convictions even unto death. I could not understand these exceptions...but a devil, now, you know where you stand with them. There's no escape for us."
<Julia> That explains why everything here is weaker than him. It's not a trophy room, it's a lab's castoffs.
<Franceska> "So he killed untold people in pointless experiments that lead nowhere," Franceska succintly summarizes. "Let's end him now?"
<Steph> "We're not inferior. You only exist because of the choices that little bit of soul you've still got made," replies Stephanie, dourly. "You're just an outgrowth of the life some mortal lived. You devils are responsible for what you are! But you're also responsible for grinding yourselves down, cutting off any chance of change. You have those- those factories! Lemure pits!" She scowls. "I've
<Steph> seen fallen angels, too. Your nature is something you can change, if they can do it, so don't give me that junk."
<El-Cideon> "Our cause is a shambling cadaver, as yet unaware that all vitality has been sapped from it," he says to Stephanie. "Tell me where you would begin to refine this leprous organism. Tell me how you would avoid your immediate and terminal rejection by the body."
<El-Cideon> Crier steps to one side, looks curiously from the party to the devil as though bemused about something, but remains momentarily silent.
* Franceska just looks exasperated, and a bit on fire.
<Steph> Stephanie frowns. "I'd, uh, take responsibilty for how devils are made," she says, eventually. "And start changing it from there. I ain't a wizard or a mechanic or nothing, but you've either got to work from the bottom of the process, or be strong enough to kick out the big guy and dictate policy from the top."
<Franceska> "I actually thought about that but if this trip taught me anything it's that killing it all from the ground up is the better way."
<Julia> Julia on the other hand is honestly intrigued by the discussion. "Cut out what remains healthy, remove it from the diseased body and grow it in isolation, like a cutting from a tree," she ventures. "Given time it could grow strong enough to stand on its own, greater than its parent."
<El-Cideon> He chuckles darkly. "Ah, you think I should aspire to seize power myself, and reform Hell as its lord? But of course, I must play the game all the while. There would be costs, very human costs. Do you think that it would be worth the price in the end?" He shrugs, produces a length of spiked chain and hefts it experimentally. "But it hardly matters. Your damned friend seems quite insistent that you murder me. I no longer have severe objections, but I should hardly expect the job to be done by an unworthy soul."
<Steph> Stephanie shrugs, and shakes her head. "You die here, you die forever, right? Gone? You sound more tired than my dad, so this is probably doing you a favour."
<El-Cideon> Crier sidles back, whispers something to Her Grace, as yet uninvolved in the conversation.
<El-Cideon> "Then let's give you something to brag about to all the minstrels back home," Krae says with a humorless grin.

<El-Cideon> "Well struck," Krae grunts in grudging acknowledgment before collapsing dead on the spot from his myriad holy wounds.

<Franceska> "At the risk of having those become famous last words, I can take her," Franceska responds to Julia, with the battle effectively decided. "Objectively speaking. If we ever had reason to fight for real, which we should not."
<El-Cideon> The dog howls in agony, tottering on its feet!
<El-Cideon> OOC: Julia's also up!
<Steph> "Objectively speaking, you are tremendously ungrateful!"
<Franceska> "That is simply not true! Name five examples to prove your point."
<Julia> "I should have kept quiet..." Julia mutters, settling for dissolving the dog with a glare and a brandishment of a defaced unholy symbol!

<Steph> "Are you high?"
<El-Cideon> With a shudder, the old hound falls dead on the ground crackling with baleful energy.
<El-Cideon> OOC: free act
<Franceska> "Ah! In that case, if you were murdering all those terrible people and things for my sake, my sincerest thanks to you, Stephanie."
<Julia> "So... about that vault?" Julia asks, since their friendly mercenaries may become less friendly without the promised looting.
<Steph> "Say it! Say it again!"
<Franceska> "I have helpfully prepared Disintegrate and Phase Door, so the payment of our friends is all but assured."
<El-Cideon> "Hang on," Crier answers. She peers off in the distance for a moment. "Sounds like the gang killed everybody else and are busy banging away at it. Should have plenty of time with no one to bother us now!"
<Franceska> "Let us see if I can't shave some time off that estimate?" Franceska offers.
<Steph> Stephanie sticks her tongue out at Franceska, before floating next to Julia. "And don't get any ideas. I could so take her," she feels the strong need to point out.
<El-Cideon> "Are you going to...keep that?" Jill wonders about Julia's new friend as the group meanders upstairs. She casts a last look back at the bonepit before turning away.
* Franceska reverts to her true self quite happily, although her real body was dressed far more modestly. At least she still has her cape and crown.
<Julia> "Let us hope it never comes to the point a demonstration is needed," Julia says to Stephanie, before glancing at the dryad. "Well, I considered having her explode at Krae, but it feels a bit pointless killing her now?"
<El-Cideon> "Just kill her," Ismaela says with a dangerous shrug. This sounds a natural solution to her.
<Steph> "We could drop her off in Azure, or maybe Arborea. She looks like she's in dire need of a tree."
<Julia> "Yes, speaking of, what happened to your tree?" Julia asks the dryad directly. "And how are you walking around without it?"
<El-Cideon> "You know, there's a point," Crier agrees. The dryad obediently answers Julia: "It's in the garden," she sings.
<Julia> "Oh well, I suppose we can't take her anywhere without killing her, so it's a moot point... unless it's a small tree?"
<El-Cideon> She shakes her head. As the group passes the garden upstairs, she points to the petrified night twist.
<Franceska> "You can bring her back after killing her."
* Franceska frowns. "But why would you want to?"
<Steph> Stephanie drums her fingers on her side. "Why did you even fight for that creep before?" she asks the dryad.
<El-Cideon> Crier shrugs. "Whatever, leave her the house for having to put up with all these people. I mean, it's not like we can take it with us."
<Julia> "Well you have a dryad at home, why can't I have one?" Julia asks, before sighing. It's really just too much trouble...
<Franceska> "And we wouldn't want to. It's really the worst tree. Which makes sense, as she was serving the worst elf."
<El-Cideon> "Friend," the dryad breaths with marginal sentience. "Watered tree."
<El-Cideon> "We are definintely not trying to bring that tree home with us at all!" Rosemund affirms.
<Julia> "Well go and wait by your tree, then," Julia tells the dryad, having no further use for her. "Do whatever you want after we leave."
<Franceska> "Oh, Rosemund! Is Jill not kind of dying right now?"
<El-Cideon> Soon enough the group finds the remaining Furies gathered around the ruined remains of what might have been an impressively sturdy door before your arrival. They look bruised but mostly intact, save for the cloaked human, who has a puddle of mush where his head should be. Crier tsks gently.
<El-Cideon> "Oh, of course!" Rosemund realizes, applying a casting of Heal to Jill's lingering affliction.
<Julia> "That doesn't look healthy..." Julia says, peering at the mushy-head.
<El-Cideon> "We'll fix him up when we get back home," Crier says. "Of course, the rez will come right out of his cut!"
<Franceska> "Wonderful. You don't mind if I call you Jill now, do you? We did, after all, kill a lot of terrible things together just now."
<El-Cideon> "I think I can grant that much in return," Jill allows graciously with a smile.
* Franceska smiles back, and then looks for a good stretch of stone to phase herself and Crier through.
