It's a mess. Parts have devils being held back or menacing, while others are clear. The vanguard's beginning to reach you and falling back, adding even more chaos. The soldiers are holding reasonably well, but it's up close combat with a fallback as well. Orderly and stabilizing isn't easy. Best as you can figure, eliminating devils will help, since they're the real problem.

How close is the biggest clump of fighting? Could I strafe the middle to back of the devils there without ripping apart friendlies?

30ft away. You'd hit at least a few friendlies - it's just getting too compacted with the vanguard falling back.
