Brian, I wouldn't inflict this an anyone. Not even the devil. This is awful. Febreez isn't working. Nothing works.

In August of last year I tried to park in a compact parking slot at work. The slot next to mine was also a compact slot. Parked there was a 2001 Honda Odyssey. Which is a minivan.

I scraped the wheel well slightly getting out of there, so I did the right thing and left my card. He emailed me and said he was going to get an estimate but he didn't think it was worth worrying about. Then he didn't contact me for months.

Today he calls back and says he has an estimate for the damage to his car. The estimate is $1500. I told him that was insane, and he could either have $150 in cash or try his luck with my insurance. I hope they will laugh at him, because how do they know what may or may not have happened to the car in the intervening months.

From my experience, they'll pay him and ding your record for it. Just because he parked like a moron and waited 6 months to get it repaired doesn't mean they'll deny him. Though they might investigate it!

Did you get pictures?  Of him parking a minivan in a spot labeled 'compact'?  That's the kind of technicality your insurance company will eat up.

Really, being a good person, doesn't tend to pay well.  Also if he doesn't already have your insurance, I would not bother to give it to him.  Because with six months delay, he has no case worth speaking of for hit and run.  Yuth is right though, trusting insurance to say 'no, that's stupid' and protect your interests isn't particularly a wise choice.  I'll trust an agent to give it to me straight on how they'll screw me or help me.  I wouldn't trust a random claim handler not to just accept a claim.

I already gave him the policy number. Worst that can happen is the insurance company decides to raise my rates. Since I'm selling the car next month I'll be canceling the policy anyway.

I guess I was kind of expecting car insurance to behave like health insurance in this regard and not pay out anything unless they absolutely had to.

Small claims like that usually get handwaved. It'll go on your claims record for three years, which is maintained by the state

Thoughts:
Today is going to be really busy.
Reality:
I am either the bottleneck or The Supreme Expert for five departments with problems today while also trying to coordinate resolutions with people in two other countries.

Busy is not exactly a sufficient term for describing today.  Though apparently I still have time to bitch about it between answering coding leads.
