I re-read Whatever Happened To The Caped Crusader last night. I still don't care for it as a story or as a work of art. Yes, Gaiman has some interesting things to say about superhero mythos, but I find the entire thing to veer into a masturbatory examination of 'legend' of Batman. I also find the entire resolution of it to be unsatisfying, no matter what statement it's making about the Batman mythos and how it's constantly reinvented and recycled.

The problem with Finnegan's Wake is that it's essentially meaningless. In it's effort to convey deeply layered meanings and dream-like interpretative states, the core of meaning is lost in suggestions and symbolism. It's an empty casket at a funeral of madness, with nothing of value surviving.
