Pyoko == dying, apparently. Given that we are, I'm told, the largest channel on the server, this isn't a great surprise. Are there any contingency plans?

thepanda

Not when I last asked. Oi, another server move is on the way? o_O

Anastasia

Oi.

Jon, where'd you hear this, anyway. It's news to me, beyond the annoying server splits and peers today.
<Afina> Imagine a tiny pixie boot stamping on a devil's face.
<Afina> Forever.

<Yuthirin> Afina, giant parasitic rainbow space whale.
<IronDragoon> I mean, why not?

Fallacies

Unless you have more information, judging that a server is dying based on the fact that #sr is the largest visible channel is baseless -- it was one of the largest on Nabiki too. News of potential server death hasn't been mentioned on the pyoko.org forum, and Alliance-IRC has been around since the 90's. I think you're jumping to conclusions a bit too early.

It's not so much hearing, as observing. I'm just impatient.

Ragnar

#Valhalla used to be much larger than #soulriders on the same server. I think it still is. It was last time I checked. I don't know who told you that, but I think that has little basis in truth. The only oddities I've noticed are random ping timeouts.

If you want a small server, you have to put up with some instability, as the two are often inversely related.

Edit: Typo fixed.

DannyCat|somewhere: Watch out, Huitzil. Encredible froce is being swang here.

I know this was probably a typo, but I'd gladly put up with some stability.

And you can have a stable small server. It's called, not running on an undependable network connection.

Ragnar

Yeah, but what do you have in mind with a dependable connection? Cable connections are pretty dependable, unless there's construction outside of your house.

The way I've always understood it is that the more ways you can access a server (e.g. xxxx.foobar.irc and yyyy.foobar.irc), the stabler it is; therefore, very stable servers tend to have many connections and are large. Not that I'm any kind of expert on this. I could be dead wrong.

Well, uh, not quite. You're confusing servers and networks there. Pyoko is a network, with multiple servers. Normally, that's great, because more people can connect easily. However, if the servers lose their connection to each other, bad things happen.

Now, a dependable connection depends on where you're hosting, and what sort of connections it has to the backbone. Like, I have a server at Hurricane Electric's Fremont datacenter. That datacenter has two OC48 connections to the backbone, and another OC48 connection to another HE datacenter, which has its own connections to other parts of the backbone. That gives a lot of redundency. I probably don't need all that redundency, but it gives me a lot of bragging rights, I think.

You did this once, Jon.  It annoyed me.  Don't do it again.  If and when we move, we'll distribute the information in an orderly manner.

I highly do not appreciate dropping by the forums and finding a 'let's move' campaign going on.

Folks, as a certainty: I will be posting the information if we move.  It will be posted in multiple spots simultaniously and it won't be anything sudden.

As of the moment, there are no plans to move off of Pyoko in the short term.

Dracos
Well, Goodbye.

Jon

Bloody hell. When did I say "Let's move"? I did ask about contingency plans, but I was meaning something like "Are people popping onto other servers until this blows over, or are we sticking it out?"

What I "did once" was to offer something, and get confused when there didn't seem to be any action on it, and nobody would talk to me. A simple PM would have been enough then, and it would have been enough now. So be it.

Dracos

Jon, since it's apparently hard to get:

Sudden bursts of public paranoia over the server are not helpful.  Going around going "THE SERVER IS DYING".

Again, rapidfire reactions aren't really needed here nore are they particularly helpful.

If we were popping over to another server, there'd be a message on it.  Both on the server and on here.

Since we have not placed a message, we're not moving right now.
